There was a Rihanna concert interrupted by a football game last week and the Flems are here to breakdown every aspect of Rih-Rih’s iconic, chill-but-empowering performance — from the high-flying choreography, to the fashion, the set list, the baby bump reveal, a bizarre (gross) theory about the theme and even a full, detailed breakdown of Rhi-Rhi’s Fenty Beauty pre-show routine from … Dave, of course. Trust us, this ep shines bright, like a diamond.
The Flems break down the Grammys, perhaps the greatest awards show in history, starting with the incredible tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop. After a new segment called Ally’s Corner, featuring an epic recap of Ally’s first job fair (sponsored by: Secret Antiperspirant) the Flems break down the Grammys as only they can with dad-daughter debates on fashion (Harry Styles’ Rainbow Fish jumper); vibes (Lizzo, LL Cool J, TayTay, Jay-Z, Ben Affleck); plastic surgery (Madonna); conspiracies (Cardi B and Harry Styles’ stage snafu); and, of course, music (the moving story behind Bonnie Raitt’s winning song).
After a (brief) hiatus, a ski trip and a national TV appearance, the Flems are back (again) and better than ever with a full ep dedicated to championship football. Get the inside scoop on the Flems trip to LA to watch the Georgia Bulldogs win (another) Natty featuring Ally’s network TV debut. The Flems then breakdown everything you need to know about the Super Bowl, meaning: the Mahomes family social media, Rhianna’s Halftime Show and, of course, Ally’s expert pick for the game. For ITO listeners there’s also an exclusive reveal of the first review of Dave’s next book - and it’s a doozy!
With the McRib about to be permanently retired (for the 4th time) and Ally home for Thanksgiving, the Flem's provide you with some much-needed Thanksgiving travel comic-relief by sampling the McDonald's "classic" while catching up on the #Georgia Bulldogs run at another National Championship, Dave's story on the 10th anniversary of the New York #Jets Butt Fumble, the #Budweiser snafu at the #WorldCup, the Flem Family's annual Turkey Trot 5K and much more. While the jury is still out about the McRib -- a "restructured meat" sandwich rumored to contain bits of Loch Ness Monster fin and the inspiration behind what Ally calls "A McRib Butt Fumble" -- as far as the rest of this hilarious ep goes, we're sure the ITO Fam will be Lovin' It.
After a near-revolt by the ITO & TayTay fams the Flems reconsider their hasty and slightly harsh initial take on Swift’s 10th album ‘Midnights.’ Tune in for a smart, nuanced, insightful (mea culpa) and re-review of TayTay’s latest work as well as Dave’s current ESPN feature on a behind-the-scenes look at the crazy Astros fan “Mattress Mack” who is now just 4 wins away from cashing in on a record $75 million World Series bet. And be sure to check out the shows INSTA page for a collage of faux ‘Midnights’ covers.
The Flems instant review is in for TayTay's 10th album 'Midnights' and it's a shocker. Instead of continuing on in the 'Folklore' vein or returning to her pop glory days of '1989', TayTay split the difference with a restrained, dreamy, electro-confessional concept album that left the Flems, well, underwhelmed. While every other so-called critic on the planet raves over 'Midnights', tune into this week's ep of ITO for the real tea on TayTay and to find out why the Flems, two of the biggest TayTay Stans around, dared to give this wildly over-hyped (and, uninspired) effort a ... C+ after their first listen.
It's the world-wide debut of Ally Tries Stuff! Fresh off her 21st birthday, Ally samples a wide variety of beer -- a beverage she once described as tasting like a "Jar of Farts" -- in the hopes of educating herself and all of her fellow female beer newbies in ITO Nation on Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Hoppiness. Will Ally's beer of choice be a pilsner, an IPA, an import, an Athen's original, a wheat, something pumpkin-infused ("It's like drinking a candle"), a Natty Light ("The Auburn-football of beers"), or, perhaps, something dark and "delish" from the land of her ancestors on the Emerald Isle? Tune in to learn everything you've ever wanted to know about beer (from the perspective of a college senior) but were afraid to ask.
The Flems have been to - and talked about - the Parthenon, the Burj Khalifa and Lollapalooza but nothing can top Dave’s long-awaited journey to the most epic place on the planet: Buc-ee’s. With 60,000 square feet, 225 gas pumps, jerky for miles, world famous bathrooms and a million cartoon beaver logos, Buc-ee’s has become the Taj Mahal of rest stops and a viral marketing phenomena so huge and irresistible only an advertising expert like Ally can fully explain the genius that is Buc-ee’s.
The Flems break down three huge debuts this week: Ally’s Bulldogs begin the defense of their national title (and world’s best mullet award) against Oregon; ITO is home to the WORLD premiere unveiling of the cover of Dave’s 3rd book: Who’s Your Founding Father? And, of course, the pod that brought you the NCTayTay Tournament breaks down every last crazy theory and deep insight into Taylor Swift’s surprise announcement of Midnight her next (and Dave says, last) album. Tune in for everything you need to know about UGA’s Debut, Davey’s debut and especially TayTay’s Debut!
Season 3 of ESPN's only Father/Daughter podcast starts with an ITO classic as the Flems recount their epic, hilarious, summertime adventures across the globe, starting in Cannes, France where Ally "slived" with Paris Hilton, Megan Thee Stallion and the CMO from Walmart (?) and squared off with French pickpockets while Dave beefed with French toddlers. From there it was off to the Amalfi Coast for a mountain-top showdown with a goat-herding Mets fan on a donkey (honest) and a Ulysses-esque sequel to the Hike From Hell before returning stateside for a trip to the mosh-pit two years in the making. Your favorite Flems are back and it's time to catch up! And be sure to check out Ally, Paris, the goats and the rest of Hot Dave Summer (Part Deux) on the ITO Insta page!
Still obsessing about the Slap heard ‘round the world at the Oscars the Flems break down that viral moment before engaging in a thesis-level discussion about anything and everything in the world that “Slaps” - from music, to fashion to TV, and, of course, slap shots and Ally’s psuper psychic pick for the Stanley Cup.
The Flems embrace this crazy Oscar season with a Davey Hollywood Classic tale of Dave’s work as an extra alongside Mark Wahlberg on the movie set for the football film Invincible. Did Davey make the cut and become best friends with Dirk Diggler or did he end up taped to the goalpost? Tune in to find out and check out the show Insta for some great pics from the movie set.
With In Timeout approaching 64 episodes just as the 2022 NCAA Tourney gets underway, the Flems decided to do a full tournament bracket, breaking down every episode they've ever recorded. Take a hilarious trip down memory lane with Ally and Dave (and their new fav player: Florida's Phlandrous Fleming Jr.) to find out which classic ITO eps will survive and advance. Can Arby's Meat Mountain get past Britney and the Hike from Hell? How will NCTayTay match up against the Ultimate Dad Fashion Quiz? Who will make the Flem Final Four: Jock Jams, Met Ball Meets Football, Rainbow Babies, Eat-Spray-Love, Ally's Moment of Tooth or The Tao of Poo? And be sure to vote for your own Flem Final Four Fav at the show's Insta.
With no more football and the basketball tournament far away, to entertain themselves, the Flems challenged each other to watch their favorite shows, Gossip Girl and Seinfeld!!!
After predicting the winner of Super Bowl LVI a month in advance, Ally gives the final, definitive break down of the most important, entertaining parts of any Super Bowl - the commercials, the halftime show and all the weird prop bets.
After predicting a month ago that the Rams would make the Super Bowl, Ally tackles all the craziest prop bets from the big game. How long will the National Anthem take? Will Snoop smoke during halftime? What’s the over/under on cute dogs in Super Bowl commercials? Will a fat guy score a TD? And what color will the Gatorade shower be? All the answers you seek will be revealed in this ep by your Super Bowl Psychic Ally.
With NFL playoff game temperatures dipping well below zero, the Flems break down the weird football and fan tradition of happily freezing to death - sometimes, literally, as you’ll learn with a classic Ally investigation into the infamous 1967 Ice Bowl in Green Bay. There’s also chicken broth, French fry heating lamps for fans, North Pole marathons, frozen beer, Dave’s close calls with frostbite, frozen tears in Cleveland and a cold-hearted story about a Buffalo Bills QB.
The Flems recap their epic road trip to Indy to watch Ally’s Georgia Bulldogs crush Alabama (finally) and win their first national championship in 41 years. Come along on this once-in-a-lifetime journey through tears, boos, celeb sightings, freezing temps, a national spotlight, 15-hour drives, little old ladies, and lots and lots of barking.
Before heading up to Indianapolis for an epic pod road trip to the #NCAA Championship game between #Georgia and #Alabama the Flems drop 22 fearless predictions for 2022. To make things interesting, Ally handles the sports predictions for the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup, the Winter Olympics, the NFL Draft (and more) and Dave handles all the pop culture predictions for the Oscars, Lolla '22, fashion trends, the Kardashians and so much more. The Flems also predict the final score of the big game and which UGA player they plan to tackle on the field during the post-game celebration. Be sure to follow along in real time during the ITO Road Trip to the Natty on our Insta and Facebook pages.
Join the Flems as they celebrate the holidays with a podcasting version of the crazy holiday office party complete with Holiday Seltzer taste-testing, a rare guest appearance by Flerm the show mascot, listener shoutouts, inside information on a new #ESPNDaily project Dave's developing and discussions on the best Christmas gifts, songs, movies, memories, rituals, ornaments, food and a brilliant solution for last-second #GirlDad gift-shopping nightmares (In Biebs We Trust). There's also a #UGA bet and prediction on the national semifinal and a full dissertation from Ally on the term "Cheugy."
After Dave made national news this week with his story on the Pottsville Maroons, the stolen 1925 NFL championship and the Cardinals Curse the Flems go deep on all things Curses: Sports curses, Music Curses, Georgia Bulldog Curses, NHL Curses, MLB Curses, Christmas Curses and somehow, like they always manage to do, bring it all back to Taylor Swift and The TayTay Curse on Jake Gyllenhaal conjured up by the new 10-minute epic version of All Too Well, which leads to the revelation that Pennsylvania native TayTay is actually connected to the Cardinals Curse. (Mind, blown.) Listen, share & subscribe or you’ll get The In Timeout Curse!
To celebrate Thanksgiving the Flems bring you a very special Davey Classic: listen along as Dave reads you his bizarre, fascinating and historic tale about the 1952 #Dallas Texans and the inside story on how the worst team in #NFL history pulled off a Thanksgiving Day miracle. Need something to listen to while traveling to see family or walking off the big feast? The Flems have you covered with one of the most incredible stories in NFL history, a tale that includes murder, millionaires, rattlesnakes, drunken sledding, brave NFL pioneers, Hall of Famers and, of course, some of the craziest characters and wildest stories in sports history.
With the pod about to crank up heading into the Holidays, the Flems catch up on all your favorite topics: #UGA’s quest for a national title; #TaylorSwift’s latest release (and drama); Holiday drinks and fashion; the #Yellowstone version of Rate-a-Dad; a fascinating and weird 60-second Book Corner; and Ally’s amazing thesis-level breakdown of #AaronRodgers recent breakdown.
To celebrate the #NHL's return to #ESPN after 16 long years, the Flems bring back one of their most popular episodes: Ally's Ultimate Hockey Quiz. Does Ally know the difference between Biscuits, Buckets and Barns? What does she think of the Kraken, the #UGA Ice Dawgs, the Bieb's new job as an ESPN narrator, Conor McDavid's chances at 150 points, weird goaltenders, hockey beards, chiclets, the Bolts run for a third-straight Cup and, of course, the Wings chances of ending their playoff drought? Sure it cost ESPN $2.8 billion to bring back the NHL, but it was worth every penny for a chance to hear Ally ace yet another Ultimate Hockey Quiz.
The Flems take care of all your podcasting needs in one place with one show that covers every Hot Topic you need the Tea on this week: SEC football; show giveaways; Turf Toe; Olivia Rodrigo and the Violent Femmes; Sexy Bernie; book recs for FOTS Seth Wickersham and Joe Posnanski; Gossip Girl bad dads; pumpkin spice; early kickoffs; listener feedback; toothless coaches; NHL; The Rolling Stones; Stalking Jordan Davis; #FreeBritney; temper tantrums; Tom Brady; talking dogs; Squid Games; Tai Verdes; 8th grade football documentaries; Catholicism; Tom Brady; and even more on our Insta!
Anyone can cover the Met Gala or the opening of the NFL season - but only the Flems could figure out a way to cover them both, at the same time, in the same pod! In Timeout’s 50th episode is where fashion and football and touchdowns and fancy gowns meet. So tune in to hear Ally's fashion critiques of the infamous Met Gala and Dave's NFL analysis - at the same time. Trust us, just like Ciara’s Seahawks gown and Matt Stafford in a Rams uniform - it works! Be sure to head over to our Instagram for more fun content!
In Timeout is BACK and better than ever with Season 2! The Flems give an in depth rundown on everything that happened during their Summer hiatus. From an update on Davey's surfing to a review on The D'Amelio Show, this episode has everything. There's also stories about their travels to St. Barths and Lollapalooza, the Georgia Clemson Game in Charlotte, and the Olympics. Did Dave have a successful hot girl Summer? Tune in to find out and as always head over to our instagram for pics of everything we mentioned in this episode!
Breaking news on the pod this week as the Flems discuss Dave's third book -- tentatively titled: Who's Your Founding Father? -- which will challenge everything we think we know about the #4thofJuly, the country's first, real #DeclarationofIndependence and the origin story of true American #patriotism. You might want to save your fireworks this week. Because, if Dave's epic quest to continue John Adams' investigation into the fascinating, bizarre, legend of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is successful, we've all been celebrating the wrong Founding Fathers, the wrong Paul Revere, and the wrong Declaration of Independence for the last two and a half centuries or so.
In the second installment of the Davey Classic Series, Ally expertly breaks down Dave's groundbreaking story - "It Happens" - from ESPN The Magazine's first Body Issue in 2010. Inspired by NFL MVP Lamar Jackson's recent bout of "cramps" the Flems explore the science, sociology (and, of course, the scatological humor) behind the ultimate sports taboo: elite athletes pooping their pants. We all do it. In fact, we produce 1.5 billion pounds of the stuff every day on this planet. But what happens to the athlete's mind and body when they push themselves beyond the limits of the human body? More often than you think, they end up like Lamar Jackson, Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, surfers, NASCAR drivers, Olympians, 70% of endurance athletes and most NFL linemen - humanized by the Tao of Poo. Listen in as the Flems take a deep dive into the story that launched the iconic Body Issue Undercarriage Anthology.
The Flems start out Year 2 of the pod with an all-time classic, breaking down the video of Ally's hilarious, bizarre, expletive-laced trip home from the dentist after being sedated for her recent wisdom teeth extraction. In this Molar Report she sings, she cries and she swears -- a lot. She also gets angry about an ugly, imaginary hat, and, of course, she's extra mean to her co-host and expert caretaker. Fully recovered now, Ally walks us through this soon-to-be-viral video trip through her deep (and endlessly funny and entertaining) subconscious.
Trevor Lawrence probably can't save the Jaguars. In fact, the highest-drafted QBs almost never win Super Bowls for their original teams. #NFLDraft scouts and experts? They get HALF of their most important picks wrong. Which is why, after 5 years in the NFL, high draft picks are just as likely to be out of football as they are to be in the Pro Bowl. The NFL Draft is one big myth. No wonder a former NFL Executive of the Year called the process "completely broken." Luckily, the Flems are here to give you the rare, straight Tea on what's about to go down in Cleveland. Mainly, that because of group think, useless metrics (like QB hand size) and the usual lack of creativity and diversity, the NFL could actually learn a thing or two from #UGA sororities on how to successfully select future members.
To celebrate Dave's 20th Anniversary at ESPN, Ally expertly breaks down a classic story from the ESPN Archives. The Marathon of Their Lives ran in October 2013 on ESPN and is about the 26-mile marker of the Chicago Marathon where in the very same race, a fire-fighter from North Carolina collapsed and died and then, a few hours later and in the exact same spot, a mother who was running the marathon while nine months pregnant, went into labor and eventually gave birth. The award-winning story traces, and intertwines, the lives, the race and the ultimate fate of both runners: Will and Amber. It's a moving piece about the sometimes cruel, inexplicable balance of life that, for many years, Dave thought of as gut-wrenching and sad -- until Ally's unique perspective helped redefine it as a Tale of Two Strong Women.
Inspired by the amazing 2021 Minnesota High School All Hockey Hair Team, the Flems select the best hairdos from the NCAA Tourney. Who had the best flow on the court? Did Ally really get paid this week to Google cute basketball players? And is there an actual connection between great players and great hair? Don't worry, the Flems will mullet all over for you. From Baylor's Mullet Bros to the Gonzaga 'stache, Miley's "pullet" and Tyger's epic style, the Flems will show you who is truly a cut above.
ESPN senior writer, host of the SEC Network's Marty & McGee and best-selling author Ryan McGee joins the Flems to talk about his new book: Sidelines and Bloodlines and commiserate with Ally about working with your dad. There are endless, insightful jaw-dropping tales from Dr. Jerry McGee's long, illustrious career as a top college football referee, the McGee family's connection to college football mascot royalty (UGA I), predictions for the SEC in 2021, memories from Ryan and Ally about UGA football and the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and an amazing rapid-fire Q & A at the end from Ally that covers everything from Taylor Swift (of course), to Marvel, Star Wars, NASCAR, and even soiling your flight suit at zero Gs in a Thunderbird F-16 fighter jet.
Forget your busted NCAA Brackets and join the Flems as they count down the 64 greatest Taylor Swift songs of all time while singing their hearts out and Stan'ing on everything TayTay. You thought basketball brackets were hard? Try choosing between Shake It Off and Breathe or Love Story and Bad Blood or You Belong With Me (Dave) and Dear John (Ally). Who is your NCTayTay Final Four? Don't worry, in the ultimate NCTayTay Brackets the ITO crew has a Blank Space, baby ... and they'll write your name. Be sure to follow along with our picks and bracket winners - and share your own - on ITO social media.
After waiting until the last second to fill out their NCAA brackets (just like everybody else), the Flems use the expert advice they got from Chad Millman in Timeout 38 - along with a curated collection of data, inside info and gut instinct - to pick every last game in the NCAA Tournament. If you listen along we promise this will be the most fun you've ever had filling out your brackets at the last second. You'll get two very different approaches (Dave: over-thinking, Ally: intuition), along with an update on Ally's epic COVID vaccination drama; show mascot Flerm's first live appearance on the pod; a Rufus mention; a Rolling Stones song we used to parent Ally; and a wager to decide the pod's best procrastinating prognosticator.
The Flems welcome their first celebrity guest to the show - The Action Network's Chad Millman - and just in time to help Ally and everyone else fill out their NCAA tournament brackets. It's not Bracketology, it's: Bracket-Ally-gy. Dave and Chad have been friends and colleagues for 25 years, since sharing an office together as reporters at Sports Illustrated, so along with some great tips to help with your NCAA brackets (and his Final Four picks), Chad also shares a few classic war stories from the Super Bowl, Baton Rouge, a White House bathroom and the time he discussed the NCAA Tournament and the transitive property with President Barack Obama.
The Flems take an exclusive look behind the scenes on Dave's latest ESPN story on 17-year-old Kobe Bryant's epic 1996 pre-draft workout for the Lakers that launched a legend, revitalized Showtime and changed the course of NBA history. Our own pod prodigy (Ally) shows some serious NBA knowledge delving into every aspect of Kobe's iconic workout: how he dominated Michael Cooper, one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, how, after seeing the teenage Mamba in action for only 20 minutes Jerry West declared it the greatest workout he'd ever seen and drove straight to a nearby Subway, of all places, to start plotting the impossible -- how to bluff the Nets and entice the Hornets and land Kobe in the draft. Thirteen months after Kobe, his daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash, those closest to Kobe celebrate his life and his legacy by remembering every last detail from the workout that started it all.
Ooops, we did it again. The Flems break down yet another bizarre documentary, this time it's Framing Britney Spears, the #FreeBritney movement and everything having to do with the Holy Spear-it herself. After overcoming the funniest show interruption in podcasting history - we do record in a sorority house, after all - the Flems talk about all the media and men behaving badly (we're looking at you Justin Timberlake), how the doc falls short in places, the details behind Ally's future conservatorship over Dave, a possible #FreeBritney rally in Athens, and Ally's expert breakdown of Britney's cryptic Insta page. This Ep is sure to make you look at the Subscribe button for the ITO pod and think 'Hit me baby, one more time.'
With the show's audience exploding in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Israel, UK, Russia, Netherlands, Ireland, Africa and more, the wildly popular Davey Tries Stuff series goes international with a taste test of truly bizarre KitKat flavors sent across the globe to the ITO headquarters by a listener in Japan. "Kitto Katsu" means (roughly) "good luck" in Japan and the Flems will need plenty of it to get through KitKat flavors like Green Bean, Corn, Lychee, Matcha, Champagne and something that's supposed to taste like a refried bean PopTart. Has the Arby Meat Mountain met its match? Listen and follow along at the show INSTA to find out.
Ally gets the best, last word on Super Bowl LV with the straight Tea on her favorite commercials (hint: pretty much anything that stars Michael B. Jordan) and a full, detailed 5-star review of The Weeknd's halftime performance. The Flems review the entire Super Bowl spectacle: the good (Will Ferrell), the bad (Tony Romo); and the ugly (In Timeout's game predictions). There's also talk of Dave's greatest invention: The Valentine's Day Cash Bouquet, Tom Brady's creepiness and the show's plan to advertise in next year's Super Bowl with a streaker.
A Super Bowl megacast hosted by Ally and bursting with dozens of Dave's favorite, funniest stories from inside the last 25 Super Bowls, featuring: Prince, zombies, Hell's Angels, turf toe, 8,000 gallons of urine, limo rides with MVPs, a stiff arm from a Hall of Famer, a bruise from Lombardi, Ray Lewis, ice storms and frostbite, a Kid Rock fail, a helmet catch, a Bears curse, a cocaine binge, Playboy parties, epic naps, character awards gone awry, Andy Reid catching Bill Belichick, a quarterback named Brock, a giant, steaming pile of horse manure, a close encounter with Post Malone, power outages, the Flems Super Bowl predictions and, of course, lots and lots of yawning and crying.
The Flems discuss Dave's current ESPN story which breaks down, frame-by-frame, the secret to Steph Curry's success: his exhaustive and acrobatic work without the ball. In her best Q & A yet Ally uncovers all the behind the scenes info on how this story came together over the last year, including the Davidson hometown inspiration behind Dave's epic Curry Trilogy, the similarities between NBA guards and NFL QBs, Dave's all-time favorite sports moment and, of course, this week's WIWQ - Why I Want to Quit.
The Flems make podcasting history (again) with a live, on-air spray tan for the entire In Timeout team in the 5th show of the world-renowned Davey Tries Stuff Series. Having already sampled seltzers, holiday craft beers and Arby's Meat Mountain the Flems start the New Year right with a savage spray tan administered by friend-of-the-show Lane Dunker, the Southeast's leading GloBody mobile spray-tan professional. Can a spray tan transform even the most pale man on the planet? Tune in to Davey Tries Stuff V and be sure to check out the show Insta for before and after pics of the Tandalorian himself. (Special thanks to GloBody and Lane Dunker: lanedunker@hotmail.com)
It's a predictions pod, or, as Ally puts it: "The tea for twenty-twenty-one." Starting with the NFL Playoffs -- Bills Mafia fans will be very very happy -- the Flems run through their predictions for the new year on everything from the Super Bowl, to college football, celebrity babies, Cardi B, the future of In Timeout and the EXACT date the world will go back to normal.
Formerly known as The Best of Flem, this year the task of curating a collection of Dave's best work fell to Ally, who promptly renamed it: The Best of Davey 2020. Will Brutus or Rufus win the top prize of 2020? Or will it be Rob Base, DK Metcalf, Scottie Pippen, an NFL scouting myth, or, perhaps, a certain Rainbow Baby who gave us the Rae of hope we all needed in 2020? For the first time the annual end-of-the-year list also includes a look into Dave's TV and ESPN Daily pod work as well as a list of "Classic Davey" stories (on arson, Big Foot, Belichick and more) that were re-published this year. (Unfortunately, we taped too early to include Lamar Jackson's recent revival of the classic Tao of Poo Body Issue story.) But, there's an on-going beef with a Sasquatch investigator, a list of subjects Dave made cry in 2020 and Ally's attempt to recreate what she calls "Davey's fake Forensic Files TV voice..."
Continuing with their month of Holiday-themed pods, the Flems solve one of the biggest Christmas conundrums with The Ultimate In Timeout Christmas Song Draft. No more parents and kids arguing over Biebs, Bublé, Bruce and Band Aid. This year, to save you from tears, Dave and Ally combine their all-time favorite Xmas songs into one perfect Spotify playlist. Who made the final cut? Wham? Grinch? Elvis? Bono? Ariana? Run-DMC? Tune in and find out and you'll be rockin' around the Christmas tree.
No need to wait for Santa to find out who was Naughty or Nice this year: The Flems run down the entire list from 2020 for you. Tom Brady? Justin Bieber? Gritty? Ted Lasso? Harry Styles? The Heat Miser? Tune in for an exclusive peak at Santa's list from the world of sports, music, pop culture and all things Fleming, along with some more holiday beer recs, a story about Aaron Rodgers' greatest prank, advice on how to secure a Christmas tree with hockey skate laces and Kim's growing Christmas Gnome addiction. And be sure to head to our show Insta to put Dave and Ally on the Naughty or Nice list.
It's the most wonderful time for a beer! Ally returns to the home studio (!) and the Davey Tries Stuff Series continues with an epic sampling of several special holiday beers and - of course - some holiday Pop Tarts. In the name of research Dave endures a handful of truly over-the-top craft Christmas brews from Belgium, California, Michigan, New England, Texas, Louisiana (and beyond) and one disturbing group of gingerbread men.
The Flems celebrate their landmark 25th show with questions, feedback and requests from the best and most important part of the pod: The Listeners! After celebrating two recent show achievements and, of course, a spray-tan near disaster, the Flems answer all your burning questions: What shows rocked? What shows flopped? What's the next topic for Davey Tries Stuff? How are the #GirlDad holiday outfits coming along? (Don't ask.) There are updates on the Goodwins' Rainbow baby, a complete list of Ally-isms from the first 25 eps and an update on the future of the show that you will not want to miss.
The wildly popular Davey Tries Stuff series continues with an epic Arby's taste test, featuring the secret menu item and urban legend Meat Mountain sandwich - EIGHT meats, four cheeses, five pounds, 1275 calories and one barf bag. Ally joins in on the challenge, bravely helping to sample and review 10 items from Arby's fine-dining menu (so you don't have to). Do the Flems Have the Meats? Tune in and - burp - find out.
The Flems discuss Dave's latest ESPN feature on the epic tale of Rufus the Ohio University mascot taking out Brutus Buckeye from Ohio State - one of the first, great viral moments in sports history and the perfect way to celebrate the return of Big Ten football. The ambush by Rufus, which The New York Times described as a "Machiavellian Plot" divides college football -- and the entire world, really -- to this very day. Are you a Rufus or a Brutus? Tune in and find out.
Ally gets her revenge for last week's Hockey Quiz with the ultimate #GirlDad Fashion Quiz. The Flems discuss all the important fall fashion trends every legit #GirlDad should know: Zebra prints, bangs, or no bangs?, Urban Outfitters, how to survive a Brandy Melville experience, balayage, acrylics, (yes, those are real things) and the most important details from The Devil Wears Prada. Dave thinks cropped jackets, metallics, ruffles and marigold are going to be huge this fall -- but is that enough to win the quiz and claim his crown as the best #GirlDad shopper in the world? Tune in and be sure to follow the always fashionable In Timeout show Insta
To celebrate the end of the NHL season and the Tampa Bay Lightning winning the Stanley Cup, Dave wanted to do a hockey episode. There's just one small problem: Ally hates hockey. But she likes UGA swag. So a deal was struck: If Ally could somehow pass the Ultimate Hockey Quiz in this episode she would win the new, limited edition 100th anniversary Georgia mascot jersey. Does Ally know the difference between Heisman and Stanley? Can she use "Flow" and "Chirp" in a sentence? Can she tell the difference between a Clutterbuck and an Oglethorpe? Is she up to date on the speeches in Miracle and Slap Shot? And how many hockey stories of Dave's can she endure -- from the Lightning's dentist, to a shove from the Flyers coach, to an epic Body Issue cover shoot and a Zamboni ride through LA -- before she loses her mind? Tune in and find out and follow along with our show INSTA.
Josh Jacobs is the NFL's toughest and most dynamic young runner with an incredible and inspiring backstory Ally describes as "a Disney movie." Now he hopes to become the face of the Las Vegas Raiders as they move into their new home, the $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium on Monday Night Football. The pod accompanies and analyzes Dave's ESPN feature on Jacobs who was homeless for a stretch while growing up in Tulsa and, 10 years later, in January, bought his dad a new home. The story, and the discussion, are about a franchise and a family creating and defining the idea of a home; and a budding superstar who faces the toughest challenge of his life: adapting and surviving as a running back in the NFL. There's also listener shoutouts, Dave singing Cardi B and an update on the Hike From Hell and the Dave Tries Stuff series.
Ally recovers from COVID just in time to celebrate the start of the NFL season by curating the greatest list of Andy Reid's Feats of Eating ever compiled in one place. By the numbers the episode (and Big Red's coaching life) goes like this: 3 - meatballs once given to John Wayne; 80 - ounces of milk consumed to win a contest in Green Bay; 7 - pounds, the weight of Reid's famous homemade burrito; 45 - the miles he'd drive at BYU for his favorite tacos; 40 - ounces of steak; 19 - minutes, how long it took him to eat it to get it for free; 3 - cuts of meat ordered at a dinner with the Eagles owner; 7 - cheeses in Reid's famous Mac and Cheese Thanksgiving dish; 1 - gallon of M&M's consumed each week going over the Chiefs game plan; 10 - former assistants under Reid who have become head coaches; 0 - current NFL coaches, yes, including Bill Belichick, who have had a greater impact on the NFL; 1 - click to reach pictures of all this food on our show INSTA.
The popular "Davey Tries Stuff" series continues with an epic hard seltzer taste-test challenge - with a twist, of course. Inspired by two of our most loyal listeners, escape from the sad, crazy news of the world for an hour and laugh along with Ally as Dave gags (and burps) his way through 10 of the most popular (and disgusting) hard seltzers on the market. There's also stories about the greatest Super Bowl Playboy Party of all time, the funniest father-daughter tea party fail in history and, as an added bonus for the sophisticated palates out there, PopTart and seltzer pairings. NFL owners & True Crime, a match made in podcast heaven: Drugs, DUIs, massage parlors, bags of cash, racketeering, sexual harassment, fraud, gambling addicts, FBI raids, bribery and flipping-off fans. While wringing their hands about player conduct and preaching about protecting the shield and the integrity of the game, this off-season several NFL owners were the ones in the news for bad behavior. Turns out, over the last decade or so, on top of botching important issues like concussions, Colin Kaepernick's protest and hiring black head coaches and execs, nearly a third of NFL owners have also gotten into serious trouble with the law. (Luckily for them, terrible team management isn't a crime...yet.) As the action at NFL training camps begins to ramp up, join the Flems as they mix two of their favorite topics: football and true crime.
Fighting off a bout of Pandemic Fatigue the Flems attempt to scale Mount Mitchell (elevation: 6,684) the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. And on this crazy hero's journey, over the course of 5.6 miles and, let's just say several hours, Dave, Ally and Kate (making her third appearance on the show!) must deal with wrong turns, scorching heat, torrential thunderstorms, freezing-cold winds, blinding fog, tourists, starvation, a park ranger bro, assorted wildlife, and a few mountain miracles during what Ally describes as "The hike from Hell." Did they make it? Tune in -- and follow along on Instagram -- for a good laugh and find out.
Y'all ready for this? Probably not. The Flems discuss Dave's latest epic oral history on ESPN celebrating the 25th anniversary of Jock Jams - the ultimate collection of stadium anthem earworms. There's singing, lots and lots of singing, and tons of behind the music stories on everyone from Rob Base, to Naughty By Nature, Fall Out Boy, Martha Wash, EMF, the woman known as the "High Priestess of Hip-Hop" and even jaw-dropping tales about the Chicago Blackhawks HOFer Bobby Hull and Dave's beef with the Village People. There are tons of listener shoutouts this week along with a review of Taylor Swift's new amazing album, plans for another Seltzer (and PopTart) Taste Test Ep and, of course, an update on show mascot Flerm's swim lessons on our show Insta.
The show topic was Ally's choice this week and she delivered an instant classic: The White Claw Challenge. Using a blind taste test, and in between burps and laughs, Dave gets to the bottom of the latest drink craze while sharing some of his absolute best work-related drinking stories -- so make sure to stick around to hear about the epic VIP night out with Mike Vick. There's talk of Hairy Buffalos, Zima, Pabst Blue Ribbon in Beijing, Guinness and U2 in Dublin and Dave's taste buds never recovering from trying so many different White Claws. Ally predicts her show will get double the ratings -- and she's probably right, unless Apple podcasts deletes this hilarious ep first.
Will the players stink now that team showers have been outlawed? Will the lack of handshakes lead to less sportsmanship? Can you really stop humans from spitting after 4 million years? Will the lack of fans actually make the NHL TV product better? Bubble Babies? Spring Football? NFL coaches forced to actually - gulp - get creative? These are the things only The Flems (and their listeners) would wonder about as the sports world attempts to reopen in the next few weeks. And, of course, there's also an update on Ally's eyelash extensions, talk of a shipwreck discovery in Lake Michigan and a hint or two about Dave's next story.
An emotional inside look at Flem's ESPN and E:60 Father's Day story on the incredible journey of Olympian and NFL wide receiver Marquise Goodwin and his wife Morgan who just had their "Rainbow Baby" after several miscarriages. In his 2007 memoir "Noah's Rainbow" Dave told a similar story about his own emotional journey from the death of his infant son Noah to the birth of ... Ally Hope. Now, in Timeout 12 Dave and that very same Ally Hope share their unique perspective on the Goodwin's amazing journey, the process behind the story, Noah's Rainbow, Father's Day, and what it's really like to lose a child -- and a brother. You might just shed a tear or two. But, we promise, you'll also laugh along as you learn about Ally's grand entrance into the world, the importance of eyelash extensions, Gucci diaper bags, Yeezys, Forever 21 and the proper outfits required at Olive Garden and Ruth Chris.
After 70 days together The Flems celebrate the end of shelter in place with an Oscars-style Quarantine Awards Show. Who will be named Best In Timeout Listener? Who had the best Quarantivity? Who had the best Quarantine Meltdown and the Best Quarantine Hair? What was the Best Quarantine Song and the Strangest Quarantine Addiction? And, what exactly is a Peanut Butter and Tears Sandwich? Tune in for answers to all these important questions and more and celebrate the winners in real time with the In Timeout Insta.
In conjunction with Dave's epic oral history on ESPN about the Chicago Bulls and the greatest line of trash talk in sports history, Ally hosts an exclusive, behind the scenes, director's cut look into the making of this story and the incredible butterfly effect of the six words Scottie Pippen whispered to Karl Malone at the end of Game 1 of the 1997 NBA Finals that made The Last Dance possible. The Flems discuss the fascinating psychology behind Pippen's line (which was so devastating he actually seems to regret it just a little), where it ranks among the all-time best trash talk in sports, Dave's own SI Cover Jinx, of sorts, the Flem Fam's on-going debate about whether or not the end justifies the means with Michael Jordan, and a long list of stuff so weird and funny it has to be true: Dave's on-court tussle with Shaq, the pet camel that interrupted one of the interviews for this story (honest), the Playboy models and cake delivered to the Jazz hotel the night before the Finals, and, that time in Salt Lake City when Dave somehow jogged into a U2 concert.
To celebrate ESPN airing live sports again, Ally and Dave, propelled by the official 'In Timeout' breakfast of champions -- coffee and Gummy Bears -- wake up at 5 a.m. to watch the NC Dinos take on the Samsung Lions in the Korean Baseball Organization for a sneak peek at what sports could look like in the time of Covid. An hour into her very first baseball broadcast, Ally, of course, has several thoughts on how to dramatically improve on the national pastime. And while waiting to see the epic KBO bat flips we've heard so much about, the crew talks about baseball laundry, Wii sports, the worst songs for your phone alarm, the last live sporting events they watched (hint: emergency goalie), Dave's theory on stadiums being replaced by large TV studios in the future and tales from his 53-game road trip with minor league baseball's Biloxi Shuckers.
Enjoy this totally awesome trip back to the 80s - and Dave's high school years in Detroit during the heyday of the Pistons - as the crew reviews Episodes 3 & 4 of ESPN's The Last Dance documentary. There's 80's fashion, man-perms, Reebok Pumps and Lloyd Dobler's trench coats; 80's drinks (kamikazes!); 80's music icon Prince, and the story of Dave's first mugging before one of his concerts in Detroit. We also cover the true greatness of the Bad Boys, how they were so much more than just a nasty, defensive team, how they were ROBBED of a third title in Game 7 against the Lakers, and how, even after all these years, they should have shaken hands after being vanquished by the Bulls. There's also NFL and Georgia Bulldogs draft talk, Kim's high school connection to the Bulls dynasty and Ally's fabulous new catch phrase.
Road trip! Ally and Dave take the pod on the road this week to safely get out of the house for a little while and to give Kate some practice time behind the wheel for her driver's license test once the quarantine ends. What unfolds (at exactly 24.8 MPH) is part Hero's Journey, part Scavenger Hunt, and part Three Stooges episode. There's a stop for fast food, a trip to campus for a secret Flem Fam good-luck ritual that involves spanking a Wildcat, an explanation of the "Target Game", a re-cap of Kate's epic Quarantine Hibachi Night, tales of a TP'ing gone wrong, and a quick round of soccer penalty kicks in the dark.
Moments after ESPN's The Last Dance documentary debuted last night, SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt wondered out loud what college-aged viewers might have thought after learning about the Michael Jordan legend for the first time. Well, it just so happens that the co-host of this very pod is in that exact demographic -- so we decided to record an "emergency" late-night bonus pod to get Ally's spontaneous review of the first two episodes. Would she take the pills or the headache? Does she finally appreciate the genius of both LL Cool J and Jerry Krause? How would she rate Rodman's wedding dress? And why are we recording an emergency pod at 1 a.m. instead of producing t-shirts that say: "Carlisle wants his Mommy!"?
Thirty days into the quarantine Ally and Dave finally get to ... Sports! This ep coincides with ESPN's re-posting of Dave's epic oral history of Bill Belichick on the coach's 68th birthday. The Flems chat about that piece and how it compares to Dave's latest oral history on Andy Reid. Ally reveals how she almost ruined an ESPN cover story on Steph Curry. Dave shares the one sporting event that brought him to tears. And, in honor of ESPN's upcoming documentary on the Chicago Bulls and the greatest basketball team ever, Ally shares stories from the worst basketball team ever. There's also a shocking upset in the FlemFam Rankings; a Q & A with our Japanese audience (no, really); and a Quarantine Hack that is guaranteed to make you laugh 100% of the time, even 30 days into your isolation.
The pandemic has forced us all to learn new skills: barber, school teacher, podcaster and now ... acupuncturist? With Kim unable to visit her acupuncturist, Ally and Dave venture (ever-so-carefully) into the world of at-home Chinese medicine while discussing Kim's tireless work as our town's Director of Economic Development. There's also some epic FlemFam tales, including Dave's hot yoga fail and Ally's unique method for naming her dolls as a kid. Listen up for some exciting news regarding show merch (!), a touching addendum to the Jonah the E*Trade chimp Super Bowl story from Ep 4 and In Timeout's first-ever nominee for Quarantine Queen. Also: follow us on Insta:
You knew this was coming: Ally and Dave discuss everything about the viral Netflix sensation TIGER KING and its deep, dark dive straight into the heart of America. The discussion ranges from Joe Exotic's fashion sense, to Dave's exotic animal experience at the Super Bowl and his extensive writing for ESPN on Mike Vick and our culture's hypocrisy regarding animal cruelty, to the world premiere of In Timeout's cover of the song I Saw A Tiger. The Flems also talk about a celebrity endorsement on Twitter from the cast of Friday Night Lights, the doubling of the In Timeout audience in Europe, an update on the charity mission of the podcast, and unsubstantiated rumors of a potential rival podcast.
If there is a silver lining to this pandemic, maybe it’s the way so many of us have turned to daily exercise outdoors as a safe and healthy escape. To celebrate this Ally and Dave (and a special surprise guest) take Timeout 3 on location (upstairs!) to talk running, and its important role in the Flem Fam, while also commentating on and supporting all the non-stop action – aka: The Concord Road Relay – on the street in front of the ‘In Timeout’ official headquarters. There’s also some MAJOR show news, behind the scenes details on Dave’s best running stories for ESPN, the greatest parenting hack ever for teaching kids how to ride a bike, and a new challenger for In Timeout’s best listener beard.
Inspired by ESPN's re-airing of the Academy Award winning documentary OJ: Made in America - Dave and Ally talk one of their fav topics: True Crime featuring the untold story of the first NFL player to get away with MURDER, Dave's work in the Sports True Crime genre (Patriots receiver Reche Caldwell, and the Green Bay Packers arson case) and Ally's Top 10 true crime recs (think: lots and lots of Ted Bundy). There are more Quarantine Confessionals, some real talk about starting our Shelter in Place, we give a few listener shoutouts, discuss potential show merch and break down the 'beard shaming' accusations from Timeout No. 1. We also talk about Ally's black market eye lash extensions, the importance of wearing pants on Zoom, the current Fleming Family Rankings and tonight's Quarantine Beer Pong 'Social'.
Our first episode (!) examines the USWNT lawsuit and the recent fallout inside US Soccer and what it all means from the perspective of a young, female athlete and college student. We look at how the Fleming Fam is coping, so far, with the pandemic, the abrupt end to Ally's freshman year at Georgia and having everyone back under one roof. Other topics include: Quarantine Confessionals, tips on what not to cook during a quarantine (and what not to eat when in NYC), the age-old cereal debate between Count Chocula and Frankenberry, some binge-watching recs and our review of fellow Miami of Ohio alum and Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's questionable quarantine look.
