Just as Western society was shifting from a culture of moral character to a culture of personality, Psychologist Carl Jung coined the terms introvert and extrovert. Today these terms are the backbone of personality tests, including the widely used Myers-Briggs. About 25% of people are introverts, which may account for the misunderstandings. Introverts are not necessarily shy; it is about a preference for less stimulation. Some psychologists suggest that where you are on the introvert extrovert scale is pre-coded in your DNA. One study looked at high reactive and low-reactive babies; the former became introverts while the latter tended to become extroverts. The whole phenomenon is linked to how you respond to stimulation, which can be related to the lack of social motivation that introverts often experience. Tune in this week as we clear up some myths and shine a light on being an introvert.
