"Never too late for reinvention." This alternately amusing and enlightening podcast by Shirley Billson is dedicated to women experiencing menopause anxiety and midlife meltdown. It is both a personal journey of learning shared and an opportunity for the conscious expansion of unconscious neural networks. "If I jump in deep enough, I don't have time to be scared."
That's it. It's over. The future begins here (and similar cliche bollocks). Time for Return to Self to really begin. (That's the bit I forgot about 15 minutes in!). Goodbye coaching and hypnotherapy. Hello permaculture.

If diversity and inclusion matter to you - and if you've ever felt excluded or discriminated in any way, it should - then this episode is for you. Based on a trip to get a car serviced, what (and who) were visible gave an insight to the kind of company I was doing business with - and whether I choose to continue to doing so.

Too many menopausal women leave powerful positions in work because they become convinced they are no longer competent or capable. It just isn't true. Forgetfulness is a key symptom that takes you on that slippery slope of faulty thinking. Here's one way you can convert it to a super power.

Today may not be the official first day of Spring, but in my world, Spring arrived today with the sound of newly arrived curlews who arrive from goodness knows where to nest and raise young in the meadow near where I live (that's a curlew in the picture, in case you were wondering). Does this have anything to do with midlife or menopause? Well, yes, in a new beginnings, hopeful kind of way.

Some people know they have menopause anxiety. Others describe different problems, like brain fog or insomnia, self doubt, loss of self, inadequacy. (I’ve had them ALL!). However, when it boils down to it, anything problematic in your thinking and behaviour that’s not related to a physical symptom will have its roots in menopausal anxiety. (In fact, even some of those physical symptoms, including hot flushes and loss of libido can be exacerbated by menopausal anxiety).

So many women tell me they feel they've lost their identity, their sense of who they are; and they don't know the way back. So how do you return to you and what's on the other side of this thing called menopause and midlife?

My own menopausal experience was not a joyful one. I couldn't concentrate, couldn't focus, was forgetful, anxious, depressed, lost, confused. I thought I was losing my mind and had early-onset dementia. I never attached a particular label to my own experience, but the phrase brain fog has cropped up a lot in other women's stories of menopause, so I thought I'd share a few thoughts on it here.

What is it about menopause that seems to lead to severe anxiety for so many women, yet so little information about it exists? You’re left to either figure it out for yourself, spending on all manner of ‘remedies’ in an effort to stem this crushing feeling (that risks spiralling out of control). Or you wait it out. Unfortunately, the longer you leave it, the worse it gets.

It's not that we never had self-doubts or occasionally felt inadequate in the past, never felt uncomfortable, perhaps, with criticism. It's just that menopause acts like an amplifier of every negative thought, anxiety and doubt we ever had that brings the very things we don't want into sharp focus. Instead, could we use it as an opportunity to discover more of ourselves, who we truly are, what we really want...and act on it?

In midlife, overload can be common - and I talk about it as a factor in meltdown. However, it's not what occurs in our lives but how we feel about what occurs in our lives. In other words, if it doesn't stress us, it isn't stress.

If we're to live life on our terms, it makes sense to encourage others to do the same. After all, it's not much fun working with reluctant colleagues; and it's not good for the soul to persuade ourselves - or others - that we 'should' do something that we're really quite lukewarm about. The more we unapologetically play to our strengths, the better.

It is so easy during menopausal meltdown (or any low period) to focus on the negativity, on what doesn't work, what feels bad and what is going wrong. But that is both unhelpful and a jaundiced perspective. To move forward confidently and emerge into joy again, we need to practise shifting the balance by focusing on what does work, what is positive, what feels good and what is going well.

I confess. I'm someone with a track record of being a little controlling, overly perfectionist, and taking on more and more, either because I didn't trust others to do something as well as I could, or because I convinced myself there was no other option. Expectations are powerful. They underpin so many relationships and are often the iceberg that grounds the ship of love. When we - or others - fail to live up to expectations, there's a bitter taste and a sting in the tail. Much of the time expectations are unspoken, yet we 'expect' others to know what they are anyway. It applies to parents, children, partners, friends, colleagues, bosses, staff. Expectations are time bombs that can burden us for a lifetime if we don't learn how to express them appropriately - or let them go - so you can move on with the life you really want - and deserve.

Being grateful is something we're taught, but for most of us, that gratitude education doesn't go much beyond being grateful for things external to us - like the food on our plate or the home we live in or the clothes on our back. However, when you know how to dive deeper, gratitude can be amplified exponentially to increase well-being, happiness, reduce stress & guilt...and a host of other benefits.

The story I tell myself is that it's time for women to start standing up for themselves, to be the change they want, before 'the change' (as it used to be so aptly named) changes lives in ways they didn't plan, imagine or want.
There's a tool that can help make that transition easier...credit to Brene Brown and her book Dare to Lead (Vermilion)...The Story I Tell Myself is...

Heidi Clutterbuck will describe herself as 'just Heidi' and yet she is above all her own person, strong willed and opinionated, warm and funny. She is the anonymous Mrs A from Operation Larkspur an Independent Inquiry with the former IPCC concluding in April 2017. A victim of childhood sexual abuse who turned to Gloucestershire Constabulary in February 2013. In the hope of justice, closure and peace, she found the very opposite.
The recommendations from her case became a springboard of finding her strength and ultimately her voice. She speaks, blogs and writes on the topic of childhood sexual abuse, in the hope of helping to instigate open conversations, learning and change. She is also a nurturing mother to 5 children and you may have heard her on Radio 5 Live, Sky News or other media channels talking passionately about those subjects close to her heart.

Lisa Mullan has a degree in Biochemistry, a Phd, and speaks two languages. She joined the Welcome Trust Genome Campus in Cambridge in 2001 and worked there as Scientific Training Officer until she had her daughter in December 2006 and became a stay at home Mum for 7 years. When her second child went to school, she focused her attention on an idea she had been quietly harbouring for a very long time: turning the chemicals that make up DNA into 'cuddlies' so she could share the information with younger children.
Impressive though that sounds (and a wonderful inspiration for women everywhere), like most of us, Lisa has had hurdles and obstacles to hinder her progress. This conversation sheds light on the journey and how it has been a longer and harder haul than she ever thought possible, in terms of work, mindset change and confidence building.

Disclaimer. I'm no expert in menopause, unless you count having lived through it. However, I do have experience of working with many women who are at the menopausal stage of life, who have emotional symptoms put down to menopause, and who can be helped in a way that has nothing to do with HRT. Maybe rather than cause or effect, is it more about which exacerbates which?

Anna Komar has recently forayed into the world of podcasting, with a podcast entitled Nature Spot. It was initially her way of finding her voice and dealing with her 'ego gremlins', but is beginning to be noticed and gradually taking on a life of its own. Our 'in-conversation ' covers podcasting, self-doubt, courage, the confidence (or otherwise) of youth, and the injustices of low pay for female-dominated work. I know, random, as ever.

Many midlifers are the tail end baby boomers. In the 1970's, we had something to say about equality, change, women's rights. Yet, how much has really changed? #metoo showed that sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination had gone nowhere. Women are still woefully underrepresented on the boards of companies and in politics. Even where they are represented, most are still playing a man's game by patriarchal rules. At midlife, it's time to say 'no more.' We have more power than almost any generation to choose to create our own lives and businesses on our own terms, without having to abide by someone else's rules. The time has come for real change, to be the role model you would have chosen to follow.

If you're the kind of person who is usually the 'coping' one, the kind who gets things done, who is good at your job and can be relied on in stressful situations, when you start to find the going tough you're unlikely to wake up and think, "I know just what I need: a little midlife reinvention." But maybe you should. Because menopause and other things outside your control need not rob you permanently of your sense of self, your courage and your confidence. On the contrary, you can become more in control of what you want and how to get it, without sacrificing your health or happiness.

In mid to late life, we often wake up to a desire to live our dreams, follow our hearts, and find our purpose before it's too late. The clock is ticking and we hear it. Interestingly, we share these desires with millenials, and, whilst they may seem to have it nailed, it's usually nothing more than superficial surface gloss. We, on the other hand, have the wisdom and experience which can lead to deeper happiness. This allows us to step into the path of becoming role models for change, instead of lagging behind the curve.

In this podcast episode, Shirley is in conversation with the inspirational Michelle Myrick, whose passion shines through the recording. Michelle was born and raised at Cape Pine Lighthouse in Newfoundland, Canada and currently lives in Norway. She has been a singer, songwriter, and musician for the majority of her life, but when she took up painting a few years ago, everything seemed to fall into place. Painting opened a new door of self-discovery – a door that led to greater awareness of how unresolved trauma and self-doubt had been holding her back.
Through visual art, she began to see the hidden gifts within her experiences, and the deeper meaning they held for her life. Her artistic journey led her back to her true self. It fueled her passion to help others and has formed the basis of her life purpose – to teach others how to overcome adversity through thought management, and how to build self-confidence to pursue life dreams and goals. A teacher by trade, a creative at heart and a coach by practice, this former lighthouse girl has found a way to combine her skills, talents and experiences to help guide others in redesigning their lives from the inside out.

When we're judgemental of others behaviour or actions, it can say more about us and our own behaviour than we're willing to realise. In this podcast episode, Shirley suggests that, when you make a judgement about someone else, it reflects something you feel less than ideal about within yourself. However, when you can learn to use it as a navigational aid for finding where you feel uncomfortable about yourself, and how you think or behave, it becomes an opportunity to self-reflect. It can help both increase your empathy and raise your self-worth.

Why is it that, when you work for someone else, you can juggle workloads, hit deadlines, be organised, and achieve ridiculous targets? Yet, when it comes to finding the motivation to succeed in your own business, especially if it's a B2C (business to consumer) product or service, it can be tough. On a quest to find the kind of magazines and articles available for women over 50, Shirley did a little Google search (like you do!) and found an unbelievably laughable list. Publishers, hang your head in shame! We're over 50, not IN the 1950s! We are women of power, passion, drive, and influence (once we get over the midlife and menopausal crisis of self-doubt bit). We want more role models, more inspiration, more business, more creativity (no, not just knitting and cookery!) and more thought-provoking, change-making, conscious consumerism. Or is it just me?

The key to success in any field is simple. It's all down to repetition. Whether it's science, sport, stock trading, ecology, learning a language, or knitting, the answer is the same. Break everything down to its core parts and master one step, process, movement at a time through simple repetition. Boring? Yes, it can be. But it's how your brain learns best. If you want mastery, you have to start with repetition. And repeat.

In this episode, Shirley explains how sustainable fulfilment is at the heart of her own bigger plan - and questions whether it might be yours too. In the mid to later life quest to get in touch with your inner self, to create positive change in the world, to grow and learn, to explore, to experiment - and to support the aligned well-being of planet and person - it seems there's a need for a collective hub to deliver 'dip your toes in' learning, 'dive in deep' discovery, shared passion and personal transformation, for the good of self and the good of one another.

In this episode of 'in conversation', Shirley talks at length with Daniel Holley. The normal half-hour episode turned into an hour as we navigated the potentially dangerous waters of 'accidental' racism, which became a learning point for deep discussion. Dan is an energetic, vibrant, and deep figure. The intention he brings to the table pushes and encourages evolution of thought and development in those who work with him, which you will see played out to great effect in this episode!
The focus is around what he has labelled "Social Cohesion", which persistently asks the question, "What could we achieve if we were all striving to do our best?". At the central point of his work, is social justice. He empowers those who support, uplift and empower the under-represented and marginalised social groups.

Responding to a Facebook post on guilt, Shirley gets a little feisty and takes issue with Brene Brown's definitions of guilt and shame; distinguishing between one emotion which is driven by an internal moral compass and the other which is the adoption of a projection from another person's moral compass.

In this podcast episode, Shirley recounts the midlife moment of decision; and explains how EVERY moment of your life is based on a decision - to stay as you are, or to do something different. Everything good and everything bad begins with a decision. And you can choose something different at any moment. Whether it's choosing coffee over tea, honey over sugar, marriage over divorce, family over self, employment over entrepreneurship, this country over that, silence over speech, a decision is always the driving force for change.

The jury's out. What do you think? Should it just have been deleted? Is it better or worse than version (1)?

Also, she shares how reinvention is not a one time affair. It's a repeatable event that can be enjoyed if you know how to play.
