You cannot afford to let anyone box you in especially if this takes away from your happiness. There is a place for persons who excel at different and varying pursuits and have the ability to do so simultaneously. Be that person if it pleases you. Do what's important to you. Change the career next year, add a new language or skill and make them meaningful. Just don't be left with the regret of not doing something you wanted to do.
