Friending with Jesus

John 15:12-17 (NLT) 12This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17This is my command: Love each other.

Four Proofs of FriendshipThe 1st Proof of Friendship: What I DO for You
The 2nd Proof of Friendship: I CONFIDE in You
The 3rd Proof of Friendship: Love as JESUS Loved
The 4th Proof of Friendship: PRAYER

Nehemiah 6:1 (NLT) Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies found out that I had finished rebuilding the wall and that no gaps remained—though we had not yet set up the doors in the gates.

A. The enemy usually works together as a team

B. We also need to work together because a multi-corded strand is not easily broken.

Nehemiah 6:2-5 (NLT) 2 So Sanballat and Geshem sent a message asking me to meet them at one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But I realized they were plotting to harm me, 3 so I replied by sending this message to them: “I am engaged in a great work, so I can’t come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?” 4 Four times they sent the same message, and each time I gave the same reply. 5 The fifth time, Sanballat’s servant came with an open letter in his hand,

C. We need to be impartial and fair in judging others.

Nehemiah 6:6-7 (NLT) 6 and this is what it said: “There is a rumor among the surrounding nations, and Geshem tells me it is true, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel and that is why you are building the wall. According to his reports, you plan to be their king. 7 He also reports that you have appointed prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim about you, ‘Look! There is a king in Judah!’ “You can be very sure that this report will get back to the king, so I suggest that you come and talk it over with me.”

D. Don’t be afraid of threats if you are in Gods will.

Nehemiah 6:8-10 (NLT) 8 I replied, “There is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.” 9 They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination. 10 Later I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah and grandson of Mehetabel, who was confined to his home. He said, “Let us meet together inside the Temple of God and bolt the doors shut. Your enemies are coming to kill you tonight.”

E. Think and pray in earnest and don’t be pushed to make a decision

Nehemiah 6:11-19 (NLT) 11But I replied, “Should someone in my position run from danger? Should someone in my position enter the Temple to save his life? No, I won’t do it!” 12 I realized that God had not spoken to him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 They were hoping to intimidate me and make me sin. Then they would be able to accuse and discredit me. 14 Remember, O my God, all the evil things that Tobiah and Sanballat have done. And remember Noadiah the prophet and all the prophets like her who have tried to intimidate me. 15. So on October 2 the wall was finished—just fifty-two days after we had begun. 16 When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God. 17 During those fifty-two days, many letters went back and forth between Tobiah and the nobles of Judah. 18 For many in Judah had sworn allegiance to him because his father-in-law was Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan was married to the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 They kept telling me about Tobiah’s good deeds, and then they told him everything I said. And Tobiah kept sending threatening letters to intimidate me.

F. The work is always completed if its Gods will. Job 42:2 states that no purpose of God can be thwarted.

1 Peter 5:8-9 NLT Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

Forgiving with Jonah

Luke 6:35-38 (NLT) 35“Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. 36You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. 37“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

Point #1: How Do We Feel About Our ENEMY?

Jonah 4:1-3 (NLT) 1This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. 2So he complained to the LORD about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, LORD? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. 3Just kill me now, LORD! I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”

Point #2:  WHO is Our Enemy?

Point #3:  A TEST for Spiritual Maturity

Jonah 4:11 (NLT) 11But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?”

Conclusion: Don’t Turn Down God’s GRACE

His Language

Message Notes

1 Corinthians 14:1-5 (NLT) 1Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. 5I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.

Acts 10:44-46 (NLT) 44Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. 45The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. 46For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Luke 17:20(NLT) 20One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?” Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs.

2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT) 18So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

1 Corinthians 14:6-9 (NLT) 6Dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you speaking in an unknown language, how would that help you? But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful. 7Even lifeless instruments like the flute or the harp must play the notes clearly, or no one will recognize the melody. 8And if the bugler doesn’t sound a clear call, how will the soldiers know they are being called to battle? 9It’s the same for you. If you speak to people in words they don’t understand, how will they know what you are saying? You might as well be talking into empty space.

1 Corinthians 14:26-28 (NLT) 26Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize. When you meet together, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you. 27No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say. 28But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (NLT) 33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.

1 Corinthians 14:15 (NLT) 15Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.

1 Corinthians 14:14 (NLT) 14For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.

1 Corinthians 14:18-19 (NLT) 18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you. 19But in a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words to help others than ten thousand words in an unknown language.

1 Corinthians 14:39-40 (NLT) 39So, my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues. 40But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.

1 Corinthians 12:1 (NLT) 1Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NLT) 4There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT) 7A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (NLT) 8To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

The Gifts that Paul lists

  1. WISE Advice

  2. A Message of Special KNOWLEDGE

John 4:17-18 (NLT) 17“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— 18for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”

Philippians 2:7 (NLT) 7Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,

Luke 4:1 (NLT) 1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,

John 5:19 (NLT) 19So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.

  1. A Gift of Great FAITH

  2. A Gift of HEALING

Luke 5:17 (NLT) 17One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.

  1. A Gift to Perform MIRACLES

  2. A Gift of PROPHECY

1 Corinthians 14:3-4 (NLT) 3But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

1 Corinthians 14:1 (NLT) 1Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.

  1. A Gift of DISCERNING of Spirits

Hebrews 5:14 (NLT) 14Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

  1. A Gift to Speak in Unknown LANGUAGES or Tongues

1 Corinthians 14:1 - 5 (NLT) 1Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3But one who prophesies strengthens others,

His Baptism

Acts 10:38 (NLT) 38And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Explore All Three Baptisms

  1. Baptism OF the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:13 (NLT) 13Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

  1. WATER Baptism

Romans 6:4 (NLT) 4For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Mark 16:16 (NLT) 16Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.

  1. Baptism IN the Holy Spirit

Matthew 3:11 (NLT) 11“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Mark 1:8 (NLT) 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

Luke 3:16 (NLT) 16John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with£ water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John 1:33 (NLT) 33I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

1 Corinthians 12:13 (NLT) 13Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT) 19Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Luke 24:49 (NKJV) 49Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

Acts 2:37-39 (NLT) 37Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to show that you have received forgiveness for your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gentiles—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

Acts 8:12 (NLT) 12But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized.

Acts 8:14-17 (NLT) 14When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

His Profession

Acts 2:1-4 (NLT) 1On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Acts 2:1 Reveals

  • The Time - Jewish Feast Day of Pentecost
  • The Location - Upper Room in Jerusalem
  • The Attitude – In one accord meaning they were in unity of heart and mind.

Acts 2:5-13 (NLT) 5At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. 7They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! 9Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism), 11Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” 12They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other. 13But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”

Acts 1:4-5 (NLT) 4Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:37-41 (NLT) 37Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to show that you have received forgiveness for your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gentiles—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” 40Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” 41Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

Three Simple Steps to be a Follower of Jesus

1.        Repent

2.        Be Water Baptized

3.        Receive the Holy Spirit

His Personality

Matthew 12:18 (NLT) 18“Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

Matthew 26:38 (NLT) 38He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Hebrews 10:38 (NKJV) 38Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”

Three Attributes of God Worth Noting

1.     God is Omniscient. He’s all knowing because He knows everything there is to know past, present and future.

Psalms 33:13-15 (NLT) 13The LORD looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. 14From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. 15He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.

Psalms 147:4 (NLT) 4He counts the stars and calls them all by name.

Matthew 10:30 (NLT) 30And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.

2.     God is Omnipotent. He’s all powerful.  In Jeremiah 32 God asked the prophet, “Is there anything too hard for Me?”  Answer, NO!

Luke 1:37 (NLT) 37For nothing is impossible with God.”

Job 42:2 (NLT) 2“I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you.

Ephesians 3:20 (NLT) 20Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

3.     God is Omnipresent.  He’s simultaneously everywhere.

Psalms 139:7-12 (NLT) 7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.

The Elements of the Holy Spirit’s Soul

1.     The Mind of the Holy Spirit

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT) 8“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

Romans 8:27 (NLT) 27And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

2.     The Will of the Holy Spirit

John 16:12-15 (NLT) 12“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Acts 2:16-18 (NLT) 16No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: 17‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.

3.     The Emotions of the Holy Spirit

Who Do You Think He Is?

01—His Names

Matthew 3:16-17 (NLT) 16After his baptism, as Jesus (the Son) came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) descending like a dove and settling on him. 17And a voice from heaven (the Father) said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NLT) 14May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

His Names

  1. Advocate or Helper

John 14:25-26 (NLT) 25I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 16:12-13 (NLT) 12“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

3) FruitGalatians 5:22-23 (NLT) 22But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control.

4) Gifts—In Acts 2 thousands came into the Kingdom of God with miracles happening in their lives.

  1. GOD

John 16:14-15 (NLT) 14He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Paul closes out his second letter to the Corinthians with a plea from his heart for their spiritual growth. Why do we today so seldom see that at a practical level in our churches? Read 2 Corinthians 13:7-142 Corinthians 13:7-14 (NLT) 7We pray to God that you will not do what is wrong by refusing our correction. I hope we won’t need to demonstrate our authority when we arrive. Do the right thing before we come—even if that makes it look like we have failed to demonstrate our authority. 8For we cannot oppose the truth, but must always stand for the truth. 9We are glad to seem weak if it helps show that you are actually strong. We pray that you will become mature. 10I am writing this to you before I come, hoping that I won’t need to deal severely with you when I do come. For I want to use the authority the Lord has given me to strengthen you, not to tear you down. 11Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet each other with Christian love. 13All of God’s people here send you their greetings. 14May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Three Points Paul Makes in Our Text

  1. Paul’s goal for them was their spiritual maturity

  2. Their spiritual growth was more important to Paul than his reputation

  3. Everything Paul did was for building them up

Why don’t we push each other toward Spiritual Growth in the American church?

  1. Individualistic society

  2. Void of belief as the norm

  3. Spiritual Maturity is not what we think the church is about

  4. Spiritual Maturing has not been modeled well

What might Spiritual Modeling look like if we were to do this for others?

2 Corinthians 13:5-6 (NLT) 5Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. 6As you test yourselves, I hope you will recognize that we have not failed the test of apostolic authority.

There are some questionable boundary markers for the Christian faith.  What are some of the false boundary markers that we put up?

1)    Praying certain MEMORIZED prayers

2)    Having an EMOTIONAL experience in church

3)    Feeling CONVICTED of sin

4)    Getting BAPTIZED

5)    ATTENDING a church service

6)    Trying to lead a MORAL life

7)    Knowing FACTS about Jesus

2 Corinthians 13:5 (NLT) 5aExamine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine…

1 Corinthians 11:28 (NLT) 28That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.

1 Corinthians 11:31-32 (NLT) 31But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. 32Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

Hebrews 2:1-3 (NLT) 1So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. 2For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. 3So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak?

Why should we examine our faith?

To ensure we have a Biblical faith and not find ourselves just believing what we’re TOLD or what others around us BELIEVE without careful consideration.

There’s no good reason why people should ever be in DOUBT as to whether they themselves are His STUDENTS or not.

Questions to consider as we examine our faith

1.        What have we done because Jesus COMMANDED it that we wouldn’t have otherwise?

John 8:31-32 (NLT) 31Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

2.        Who are the people our Christian life has IMPACTED?

John 13:34-35 (NLT) 34So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

2 Corinthians 13:6 (NLT) 6As you test yourselves, I hope you will recognize that we have not failed the test of apostolic authority.

3.        Are we EAGER to serve?

John 15:8 (NLT) 8When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

In this teaching we’ll see how the Corinthians continued to sin despite Paul's repeated warnings and how they had taken his patience for weakness? Read 2 Corinthians 13:1-4

Message Notes

2 Corinthians 13:1-4 (NLT) 1This is the third time I am coming to visit you (and as the Scriptures say, “The facts of every case must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses”). 2I have already warned those who had been sinning when I was there on my second visit. Now I again warn them and all others, just as I did before, that next time I will not spare them. 3I will give you all the proof you want that Christ speaks through me. Christ is not weak when he deals with you; he is powerful among you. 4Although he was crucified in weakness, he now lives by the power of God. We, too, are weak, just as Christ was, but when we deal with you we will be alive with him and will have God’s power.

Misunderstanding Weakness and Power in Jesus’ Kingdom

  1. Jesus’ crucifixion was not a sign of weakness, but of LOVE

2 Corinthians 13:3b-4a (NLT) 3bChrist is not weak when he deals with you; he is powerful among you. 4Although he was crucified in weakness, he now lives by the power of God.

Ephesians 2:14-18 (NLT) 14For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. 15He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. 16Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. 17He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. 18Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.

  1. Our weakness in Jesus leads to our DEPENDENCE on Him

2 Corinthians 13:4b (NLT) 4bWe, too, are weak, just as Christ was, but when we deal with you we will be alive with him and will have God’s power.

John 14:10 (NLT) 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.

  1. Paul is not focused on his POSITION, but seeing Christ’s power change them

2 Corinthians 13:4 (Amp) 4For even though He was crucified in weakness [yielding Himself], yet He lives [resurrected] by the power of God [His Father]. For we too are weak in Him [as He was humanly weak], yet we are alive and well [in fellowship] with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.

2 Corinthians 12:9b (NLT) 9b…So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

Pastoral Sacrifice in Pursuit of Souls

2 Corinthians 12:12-14a (NLT) 12When I was with you, I certainly gave you proof that I am an apostle. For I patiently did many signs and wonders and miracles among you. 13The only thing I failed to do, which I do in the other churches, was to become a financial burden to you. Please forgive me for this wrong! 14Now I am coming to you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you. I don’t want what you have—I want you.

2 Corinthians 12:14 (NLT) 14Now I am coming to you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you. I don’t want what you have—I want you. After all, children don’t provide for their parents. Rather, parents provide for their children.

1 Timothy 5:8 (NLT) 8But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

Caught in a Contradiction?

2 Corinthians 12:16-19 (NLT) 16Some of you admit I was not a burden to you. But others still think I was sneaky and took advantage of you by trickery. 17But how? Did any of the men I sent to you take advantage of you? 18When I urged Titus to visit you and sent our other brother with him, did Titus take advantage of you? No! For we have the same spirit and walk in each other’s steps, doing things the same way. 19Perhaps you think we’re saying these things just to defend ourselves. No, we tell you this as Christ’s servants, and with God as our witness. Everything we do, dear friends, is to strengthen you.

2 Corinthians 12:19 (NLT) 19Perhaps you think we’re saying these things just to defend ourselves. No, we tell you this as Christ’s servants, and with God as our witness. Everything we do, dear friends, is to strengthen you.

Concern about Unmet Expectations

2 Corinthians 12:20-21 (NLT) 20For I am afraid that when I come I won’t like what I find, and you won’t like my response. I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior. 21Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence. And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.

Don’t Bite

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NLT) 13These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. 14But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.

Genesis 3:1 (NLT) 1The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

Examples of Temptation that is Packaged as Good1. Sex is good, but twist that truth to say that you don’t have to be in a MARRIAGE to enjoy it.
2. Belief in God is good, but twist that truth to say that you don’t have to FOLLOW Jesus to make that happen.
3. The value of a human life is good, but twist that truth to say that I DESERVE to get what I want all the time.
4. The world was created to be good, but twist that truth to say that THINGS will give our lives meaning.
5. Owning things is good, but twist that truth to say you should have whatever you want even if you cannot AFFORD it. Go in DEBT and have a good time.
6. Having meaningful relationships is good, but twist that truth to say that GOSSIP is a good way to cement your insider STATUS.
7. Food is good, but twist that truth to say that you should eat whatever you want whenever you want no matter the HEALTH consequences.
8. Relaxation is good, but twist that truth to say that spending HOURS mindlessly scrolling social media is a good use of time.
9. Being good citizens is good, but twist that truth to say that your allegiance to a POLITICAL party is more important than your allegiance to the KINGDOM.
10. Having food to eat and a home to live in is good, but twist that truth to say that you should only be concerned about yourself in how you LIVE your life rather than being a good NEIGHBOR.

John 10:10 (NLT) 10The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

Galatians 5:19-25 (NLT) 19When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

How Do We Avoid These Temptations?1. We need to ask ourselves whether what we are pursuing just looks good or feels good or whether it is GENUINELY good.
2. Look for the HOOK.
3. If We Do Not Know God’s TRUTH, we’re Dumb as a CARP.

2 Corinthians 11:1-15 (NLT) 1I hope you will put up with a little more of my foolishness. Please bear with me. 2For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride to one husband—Christ. 3But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed. 5But I don’t consider myself inferior in any way to these “super apostles” who teach such things. 6I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I’m not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every possible way. 7Was I wrong when I humbled myself and honored you by preaching God’s Good News to you without expecting anything in return? 8I “robbed” other churches by accepting their contributions so I could serve you at no cost. 9And when I was with you and didn’t have enough to live on, I did not become a financial burden to anyone. For the brothers who came from Macedonia brought me all that I needed. I have never been a burden to you, and I never will be. 10As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, no one in all of Greece will ever stop me from boasting about this. 11Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows that I do. 12But I will continue doing what I have always done. This will undercut those who are looking for an opportunity to boast that their work is just like ours. 13These people are false apostles.

Three Key Truths in Avoiding False Teachers1. The purity of the message matters
2. The purity of the church matters
3. Working towards Biblical maturity by the Holy Spirit in our lives matters

Three Clues to Keep Us From Going Off Truth1. Truth is more important than flash, 2 Cor 11:6
2. Is this person more interested in what he can give you or get from you? 2 Cor 11:7-12
3. Evil often wins by twisting the truth just enough, 2 Cor 11:13-15

In this teaching we’ll learn how important it is to boast in the Lord and how detrimental pride is to our salvation. Read 2 Corinthian 10:17-18

2 Corinthians 10:17-18 (NLT) 17As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” 18When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.

SIN has blinded us. It’s a great tragedy when our quest for power and wisdom stops short of God.

The cross is the end of the line for human pride.

God has chosen a way of salvation that devastates human pride. And He wants us to bow down before that!

In God’s wisdom, He cuts off the way of pride and frustrates our reliance on human power and human wisdom.

Then He opens a way to glory and to God that a proud person cannot stand. This is the way of the cross.

Why does God do this? Is it because He hates man? No! It’s because He hates pride. When God blocks the road of pride, He blocks the road to destruction.

And when God routes us onto the Calvary Road of brokenness, humility and faith, He routes us to His glory.

2 Corinthians 10:18 (NLT) 18When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.

This verse reminds us that only God’s approval matters. The world can say we’re great, but that ultimately is meaningless.

This is why we truly need to live our lives for the glory of God. We want to hear “well done, good and faithful servant.”

*In this teaching we learn that Paul tells us where the false teachers were off-track and what it will take for the work of the Lord to be extended.

2 Corinthians 10:12-16*

Five Ways to Stand in the Way of Kingdom Growth

  1. Make up your own standards of success

2 Corinthians 10:12 (NLT) 12Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!

  1. Do someone else’s job.

2 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) 13We will not boast about things done outside our area of authority. We will boast only about what has happened within the boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our working with you.

2 Corinthians 10:14 (NLT) 14We are not reaching beyond these boundaries when we claim authority over you, as if we had never visited you. For we were the first to travel all the way to Corinth with the Good News of Christ.

How can we mess up regarding our gifts?

a. We can fail to figure out what our gifts are

b. We can serve where we want to, not where we are gifted

c. We can do what we think is praiseworthy rather than what is important

  1. Be excited about what your church did while you sat

2 Corinthians 10:15a (NLT) 15aNor do we boast and claim credit for the work someone else has done.

  1. Personally fail to grow spiritually

2 Corinthians 10:15b (NLT) 15bInstead, we hope that your faith will grow so that the boundaries of our work among you will be extended.

  1. Don’t push forward into new territory

2 Corinthians 10:16 (NLT) 16Then we will be able to go and preach the Good News in other places far beyond you, where no one else is working. Then there will be no question of our boasting about work done in someone else’s territory.

In this teaching we’ll learn more about Godly authority versus carnal authority. Read 2 Corinthians 10:7-11 (NLT)Evidence for Paul’s Relationship to Jesus1.     The undeniable change in people who believed in the message he preached, 3:1-5.2.     The integrity with which he faithfully presented the Gospel message, 4:1-5.3.     The hardships he had endured for the cause of Christ, 6:3-10; 11:23-29.4.     The fact that Christ Himself had commissioned him to be an apostle to the Gentiles, 1:21-22; 5:20-21; 6:1-2; 10:8; 12:2-4.

Paul’s main mission was to call people to faith and salvation.

Paul was not given the authorization to pull down the church. His mission was to build up the church throughout the world and it requires much more skill to build than to destroy.

The difference between Paul and the Judaizers was this; Paul used his authority to build up the church, while the Judaizers used the church to build up their authority.

From the teaching of Paul in the last four chapters of 2 Corinthians, we find that the church in Corinth had better shape up before Paul’s next visit. Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-6

2 Corinthians 10:1-6 (NLT) 1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. 2Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives. 3We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 6And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.

Our Lord may not have been striking in His personal appearance. But He did not walk around with a halo. He was meek and lowly and that should be the badge of His followers.

The Greek word for “gentleness” has the idea of “lenience”—like a benevolent judge being lenient on the guilty.

“Meekness” in the Greek means “consideration for others.” It’s defined as being even better than just.

Possible Charges Against Apostle Paul

  1. Being bold when not face to face with them but not as bold when with them
  2. They believe Paul was motivated by human motives alone

What are the mental walls of resistance in the minds of some people?

It’s reasoning that is opposed to the truth of God’s Word and pride of intelligence that exalts itself.

But once the walls in the mind have been torn down, the door in the heart can be opened.

In Greek, the words for “proud obstacle” means logic or reasoning that attempts to divert people from the Gospel.

In this two-part teaching we’ll learn that anyone whohandles the Lord’s money needs a heart that is right with God. Read 2 Corinthians 8:16-24 and 9:1-5

Message Notes: http://bible.com/events/48684125

God wants cheerful givers and enthusiastic Church members. He can do without discontented and disgruntled givers.

There’s a fine line between fleshly imitation and a spiritual desire to emulate another brother or sister in the faith.  We must be purposeful to know the difference.

Generous giving is a good test of any church and a pretty good barometer of its spiritual condition.

Any pledge that a Christian makes is between that person and the Lord.

Our greatest encouragement for giving is that it pleases the Lord, but there is nothing wrong with practicing the kind of giving that provokes others to give.

This does NOT mean that we should advertise what we do as individuals, because that kind of practice would violate one of the basic principles of giving.

Four Ways to Give a Gift1.    We can give as a duty
2.    We may give to find satisfaction
3.    We may give for the prestige
4.    We may give under the compulsion of love

In this two-part teaching we’ll learn that anyone whohandles the Lord’s money needs a heart that is right with God. Read 2 Corinthians 8:16-24 and 9:1-5

A Study in 2nd Corinthians
23—Consolation

Consolation means this: “The comfort received by a person after a loss or disappointment.”

2 Corinthians 7:13 (NLT) 13We have been greatly encouraged by this. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was about the way all of you welcomed him and set his mind at ease.

Paul, Titus and the Church people at Corinth were all encouraged when the instructions they gave were obeyed. The true repentance was on full display by changed lives.

If they had NOT repented and put away the evil, the consequences to them would have been deep distress. But instead, they were now blessed and happy.

We should be comforted by one another’s comforts and hurt by one another’s sorrows and grief.

2 Corinthians 7:14 (NLT) 14I had told him how proud I was of you—and you didn’t disappoint me. I have always told you the truth, and now my boasting to Titus has also proved true!

Paul had spoken before of their faults and he speaks true of their good qualities as well.

2 Corinthians 7:15 (NLT) 15Now he cares for you more than ever when he remembers the way all of you obeyed him and welcomed him with such fear and deep respect.

2 Corinthians 6:12 (NLT) 12There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us.

2 Corinthians 7:12 (NLT) 12My purpose, then, was not to write about who did the wrong or who was wronged. I wrote to you so that in the sight of God you could see for yourselves how loyal you are to us.

The Church received Titus with great humility, admiration and respect as a minister of the Gospel and one sent by the apostle to them.

2 Corinthians 7:11 (NLT) 11Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.

2 Corinthians 7:16 (NLT) 16I am very happy now because I have complete confidence in you.

Paul now knows that this Church as a whole has matured to the place where he has plenty of proof that they’re willing to obey God and set aside everything that is offensive to the Lord.

Whenever there is a misunderstanding between people, the best remedy is a direct and open request for an explanation.

Matthew 18:15-20 (NLT) 15“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. 16But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. 17If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. 18“I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid£ on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. 19“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

2 Corinthians 6:14 (NLT) 14Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

2 Corinthians 6:16 (NLT) 16And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

2 Corinthians 6:15 (NLT) 15What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

2 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT) 18And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.”

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NLT) 17Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.

Answering Two Questions from Verse 17

1) Why should they ‘Come out from among them?’

Answer: Because believers are the temple of the living God, which makes them a habitation for the Most High. They are a special people.

2) Who is the ‘them’ in this verse?

Answer: First and foremost, they are unbelievers. But Paul is not advocating absolute separation, but abstinence from any kind of familiarity.

What is it that Paul’s readers are to separate themselves from?

1) Gentiles, as the people of God are a separate people in election, redemption, and the effectual calling, and ought to be so in their conduct and conversation.

2) They ought to separate themselves from all superstition and from the evil customs and manners of the world.

Why Should I Be Water Baptized?

1.       Baptism is about going public

2.       Baptism is a discipleship and obedience issue

What is a Made Disciple?

1)    Someone shared the gospel with you

2)    God gave you faith to believe and you repented of your sins to God

3)    Because of the gift of faith, you confess with your mouth Jesus as being your Lord and Savior

4)    You are water baptized when you have opportunity

5)    You have a heart to obey

6)    You become a responsible member of a local church body under spiritual covering

3.       Baptism comes after salvation

Acts 2:38 (NLT) 38Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to show that you have received forgiveness for your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

4.       Baptism is a powerful reminder

In this teaching we’ll learn that Paul speaks to the Corinthian Christians from his heart because he has felt uncommon sympathy towards them, 2 Corinthians 6:11-18

2 Corinthians 5:11-15 (NLT) 11Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too. 12Are we commending ourselves to you again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart. 13If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit. 14Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. 15He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

Hebrews 9:27 (NLT) 27And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,

Judgement

  1. First, God will be judging both the saved and the sinners.

  2. Next, God judges the saved as sons and daughters.

  3. Then God judges the saved as servants.

Acts 9:31 (NLT) 31The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.

2 Corinthians 5:12 (NLT) 12Are we commending ourselves to you again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart.

2 Corinthians 3:1-3 (NLT) 1Are we beginning to praise ourselves again? Are we like others, who need to bring you letters of recommendation, or who ask you to write such letters on their behalf? Surely not! 2The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you. 3Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This “letter” is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

The Comforter—Holy Spirit

Acts 2:42 (NLT) 42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.

Acts 2:43-44 (NLT) 43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.

Acts 2:45 (NLT) 45They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

Acts 2:46-47 (NLT) 46They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Three Factors of a Multiplying Church
1. A New Agenda

1 Corinthians 3:6 (NLT) 6I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.

Acts 1:6 (NLT) 6So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

Acts 1:7 (NLT) 7He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.

  1. A New Body

Acts 2:5 (NLT) 5At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.

Acts 2:41 (NLT) 41Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

How to Pray Like Jesus

  1. In His final prayer…Jesus prayed for Himself

John 17:1 (NLT) 1After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you.

  1. In His final prayer…Jesus prayed for His disciples

John 17:6 (NLT) 6“I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word.

John 17:11 (NLT) 11Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

John 17:15 (NLT) 15I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.

John 17:17 (NLT) 17Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.

John 17:7-8 (NLT) 7Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you,
8for I have passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me.

  1. In His final prayer…Jesus prayed for His Church

Two Observations
1. In this text, Jesus does not pray for the world, but for the believers in the world

John 17:9 (NLT) 9“My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you.

  1. The dominant thing from our text that Jesus prays for is that we would internalize God’s love

John 17:26 (NLT) 26I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

John 17:23 (NLT) 23I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.

How does the world know God is real?
1. It’s by how we love
2. Through a unity in Jesus stronger than anything that could divide us

John 17:23 (NLT) 23I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.

Love on display in the church is the church’s most powerful apologetic

John 13:35 (TMSG) 35This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”

A Study in 2nd Corinthians
Contemplation of New Life

2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (NLT) 1For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. 4While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit. 6So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

1 Corinthians 15:17 (NLT) 17And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.

John 5:25-29 (ESV) 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Acts 24:15 (NLT) 15I have the same hope in God that these men have, that he will raise both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Eight Judgments (Past or in the Future)

  1. There is the judgment which Jesus Christ bore on the cross
John 5:24 (ESV) 24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

  2. There is self-judgment
1 Corinthians 11:31 (ESV) 31But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.

  3. There is the chastisement of God for the believer
Hebrews 12:6 (ESV) 6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

  4. The works of the believer are to be judged

  5. The Israel nation is to be judged
  6. The Gentile nations are to be judged
  7. Fallen angels are to be judged
  8. There is the judgment of the Great White Throne

1 Corinthians 15:49 (NLT) 49Just as we are now like the earthly man, we will someday be like the heavenly man.

Matthew 16:13-19 (NLT) 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

Matthew 16:20-24 (NLT) 20Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. 21From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. 22But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” 23Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.

Truths about Confession
1. Confession of who Jesus in your life is the rock upon which Jesus builds His church
2. If we confess faithfully, we are unstoppable
3. Satan tries to get us to reshape Jesus according to our liking
4. Satan’s biggest distortion is getting us to believe we have a Jesus who keeps us from suffering in this life
5. Jesus seeks committed followers, not anonymous consumers

Matthew 5:1-3 (NLT) 1One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2and he began to teach them. 3“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 4God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  5God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. 6God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. 7God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. 9God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.  10God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 11“God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NLT)16That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 17For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Problems and human limitations have several benefits

·       They remind us of Christ’s suffering for us

·       They can keep us from pride

·       They cause us to look beyond this brief life

·       They prove our faith to others

·       They give God the opportunity to demonstrate His power

·       They bring an eternal reward

Luke 15:1-2 (NLT) 1Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. 2This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!

Luke 15:3-7 (NLT) 3So Jesus told them this story: 4“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? 5And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. 6When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ 7In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!

Things to Know about the Parable of the Lost Sheep
1. Our Shepherd pursues us as we wander in the wilderness

Psalms 23:1 (NLT) 1The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

Isaiah 40:11 (NLT) 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart…

Ezekiel 34:5-6 (NLT) 5So my sheep have been scattered without a shepherd, and they are easy prey for any wild animal. 6They have wandered through all the mountains and all the hills, across the face of the earth, yet no one has gone to search for them.

Ezekiel 34:11-12 (NLT) 11“For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search and find my sheep. 12I will be like a shepherd looking for his scattered flock. I will find my sheep and rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.

Luke 15:4 (NLT) 4…and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it…

  1. A little celebration would do us some good

Luke 15:5-7 (NLT) 5And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders.

John 1:12 (NLT) 12But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

  1. We are better together

2 Corinthians 4:7-12 (NLT) 7We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 8We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. 11Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. 12So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you.

2 Corinthians 11:23-28 (NLT) 23… I have…been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. 24Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. 25Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. 26I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. 27I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm. 28Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.

1 Corinthians 13:12 (NLT) 12Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

Philippians 1:12-13 (NLT) 12And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. 13For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ.

John 12:24 (NLT) 24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.

Romans 8:17 (NLT) 17And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Galatians 2:20 (NLT) 20My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

No Time for Wimps” is a teaching to help restore the passion of Paul as we march into this new time in the world.  We want to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT) 58So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

The ABC’s of Vision

Attitude
Belief
Capacity
Determination
Enthusiasm

Hebrews 11:24-27 (NLT) 24It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward. 27It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.
