Nehemiah 6:1 (NLT) Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies found out that I had finished rebuilding the wall and that no gaps remained—though we had not yet set up the doors in the gates.
A. The enemy usually works together as a team
B. We also need to work together because a multi-corded strand is not easily broken.
Nehemiah 6:2-5 (NLT) 2 So Sanballat and Geshem sent a message asking me to meet them at one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But I realized they were plotting to harm me, 3 so I replied by sending this message to them: “I am engaged in a great work, so I can’t come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?” 4 Four times they sent the same message, and each time I gave the same reply. 5 The fifth time, Sanballat’s servant came with an open letter in his hand,
C. We need to be impartial and fair in judging others.
Nehemiah 6:6-7 (NLT) 6 and this is what it said: “There is a rumor among the surrounding nations, and Geshem tells me it is true, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel and that is why you are building the wall. According to his reports, you plan to be their king. 7 He also reports that you have appointed prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim about you, ‘Look! There is a king in Judah!’ “You can be very sure that this report will get back to the king, so I suggest that you come and talk it over with me.”
D. Don’t be afraid of threats if you are in Gods will.
Nehemiah 6:8-10 (NLT) 8 I replied, “There is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.” 9 They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination. 10 Later I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah and grandson of Mehetabel, who was confined to his home. He said, “Let us meet together inside the Temple of God and bolt the doors shut. Your enemies are coming to kill you tonight.”
E. Think and pray in earnest and don’t be pushed to make a decision
Nehemiah 6:11-19 (NLT) 11But I replied, “Should someone in my position run from danger? Should someone in my position enter the Temple to save his life? No, I won’t do it!” 12 I realized that God had not spoken to him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 They were hoping to intimidate me and make me sin. Then they would be able to accuse and discredit me. 14 Remember, O my God, all the evil things that Tobiah and Sanballat have done. And remember Noadiah the prophet and all the prophets like her who have tried to intimidate me. 15. So on October 2 the wall was finished—just fifty-two days after we had begun. 16 When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God. 17 During those fifty-two days, many letters went back and forth between Tobiah and the nobles of Judah. 18 For many in Judah had sworn allegiance to him because his father-in-law was Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan was married to the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 They kept telling me about Tobiah’s good deeds, and then they told him everything I said. And Tobiah kept sending threatening letters to intimidate me.
F. The work is always completed if its Gods will. Job 42:2 states that no purpose of God can be thwarted.
1 Peter 5:8-9 NLT Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

Hebrews 2:1-3 (NLT) 1So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. 2For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. 3So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak?
Why should we examine our faith?
To ensure we have a Biblical faith and not find ourselves just believing what we’re TOLD or what others around us BELIEVE without careful consideration.
There’s no good reason why people should ever be in DOUBT as to whether they themselves are His STUDENTS or not.
Questions to consider as we examine our faith
1. What have we done because Jesus COMMANDED it that we wouldn’t have otherwise?
John 8:31-32 (NLT) 31Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
2. Who are the people our Christian life has IMPACTED?
John 13:34-35 (NLT) 34So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
2 Corinthians 13:6 (NLT) 6As you test yourselves, I hope you will recognize that we have not failed the test of apostolic authority.
3. Are we EAGER to serve?
John 15:8 (NLT) 8When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

Misunderstanding Weakness and Power in Jesus’ Kingdom

Don’t Bite

Examples of Temptation that is Packaged as Good1. Sex is good, but twist that truth to say that you don’t have to be in a MARRIAGE to enjoy it.
2. Belief in God is good, but twist that truth to say that you don’t have to FOLLOW Jesus to make that happen.
3. The value of a human life is good, but twist that truth to say that I DESERVE to get what I want all the time.
4. The world was created to be good, but twist that truth to say that THINGS will give our lives meaning.
5. Owning things is good, but twist that truth to say you should have whatever you want even if you cannot AFFORD it. Go in DEBT and have a good time.
6. Having meaningful relationships is good, but twist that truth to say that GOSSIP is a good way to cement your insider STATUS.
7. Food is good, but twist that truth to say that you should eat whatever you want whenever you want no matter the HEALTH consequences.
8. Relaxation is good, but twist that truth to say that spending HOURS mindlessly scrolling social media is a good use of time.
9. Being good citizens is good, but twist that truth to say that your allegiance to a POLITICAL party is more important than your allegiance to the KINGDOM.
10. Having food to eat and a home to live in is good, but twist that truth to say that you should only be concerned about yourself in how you LIVE your life rather than being a good NEIGHBOR.
John 10:10 (NLT) 10The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
Galatians 5:19-25 (NLT) 19When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. SIN has blinded us. It’s a great tragedy when our quest for power and wisdom stops short of God.
The cross is the end of the line for human pride.
God has chosen a way of salvation that devastates human pride. And He wants us to bow down before that!
In God’s wisdom, He cuts off the way of pride and frustrates our reliance on human power and human wisdom.
Then He opens a way to glory and to God that a proud person cannot stand. This is the way of the cross.
Why does God do this? Is it because He hates man? No! It’s because He hates pride. When God blocks the road of pride, He blocks the road to destruction.
And when God routes us onto the Calvary Road of brokenness, humility and faith, He routes us to His glory.
2 Corinthians 10:18 (NLT) 18When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.
This verse reminds us that only God’s approval matters. The world can say we’re great, but that ultimately is meaningless.
This is why we truly need to live our lives for the glory of God. We want to hear “well done, good and faithful servant.”

- Do someone else’s job.
2 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) 13We will not boast about things done outside our area of authority. We will boast only about what has happened within the boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our working with you.
2 Corinthians 10:14 (NLT) 14We are not reaching beyond these boundaries when we claim authority over you, as if we had never visited you. For we were the first to travel all the way to Corinth with the Good News of Christ.
How can we mess up regarding our gifts?
a. We can fail to figure out what our gifts are
b. We can serve where we want to, not where we are gifted
c. We can do what we think is praiseworthy rather than what is important

Paul’s main mission was to call people to faith and salvation.

The difference between Paul and the Judaizers was this; Paul used his authority to build up the church, while the Judaizers used the church to build up their authority.

From the teaching of Paul in the last four chapters of 2 Corinthians, we find that the church in Corinth had better shape up before Paul’s next visit. Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-6
2 Corinthians 10:1-6 (NLT) 1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. 2Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives. 3We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 6And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.
Our Lord may not have been striking in His personal appearance. But He did not walk around with a halo. He was meek and lowly and that should be the badge of His followers.
The Greek word for “gentleness” has the idea of “lenience”—like a benevolent judge being lenient on the guilty.
“Meekness” in the Greek means “consideration for others.” It’s defined as being even better than just.
Possible Charges Against Apostle Paul
- Being bold when not face to face with them but not as bold when with them
- They believe Paul was motivated by human motives alone
What are the mental walls of resistance in the minds of some people?
It’s reasoning that is opposed to the truth of God’s Word and pride of intelligence that exalts itself.
But once the walls in the mind have been torn down, the door in the heart can be opened.
In Greek, the words for “proud obstacle” means logic or reasoning that attempts to divert people from the Gospel.
Main Idea: We will learn that the Bible is the supreme authority because it’s God’s revelation. There is no higher authority you and I can appeal to other than to the Word of God.

God wants cheerful givers and enthusiastic Church members. He can do without discontented and disgruntled givers.
There’s a fine line between fleshly imitation and a spiritual desire to emulate another brother or sister in the faith. We must be purposeful to know the difference.
Generous giving is a good test of any church and a pretty good barometer of its spiritual condition.
Any pledge that a Christian makes is between that person and the Lord.
Our greatest encouragement for giving is that it pleases the Lord, but there is nothing wrong with practicing the kind of giving that provokes others to give.
This does NOT mean that we should advertise what we do as individuals, because that kind of practice would violate one of the basic principles of giving.

A Study in 2nd Corinthians
23—Consolation
Consolation means this: “The comfort received by a person after a loss or disappointment.”
2 Corinthians 7:13 (NLT) 13We have been greatly encouraged by this. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was about the way all of you welcomed him and set his mind at ease.
Paul, Titus and the Church people at Corinth were all encouraged when the instructions they gave were obeyed. The true repentance was on full display by changed lives.
If they had NOT repented and put away the evil, the consequences to them would have been deep distress. But instead, they were now blessed and happy.
We should be comforted by one another’s comforts and hurt by one another’s sorrows and grief.
2 Corinthians 7:14 (NLT) 14I had told him how proud I was of you—and you didn’t disappoint me. I have always told you the truth, and now my boasting to Titus has also proved true!
Paul had spoken before of their faults and he speaks true of their good qualities as well.
2 Corinthians 7:15 (NLT) 15Now he cares for you more than ever when he remembers the way all of you obeyed him and welcomed him with such fear and deep respect.
2 Corinthians 6:12 (NLT) 12There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us.
2 Corinthians 7:12 (NLT) 12My purpose, then, was not to write about who did the wrong or who was wronged. I wrote to you so that in the sight of God you could see for yourselves how loyal you are to us.
The Church received Titus with great humility, admiration and respect as a minister of the Gospel and one sent by the apostle to them.
2 Corinthians 7:11 (NLT) 11Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.
2 Corinthians 7:16 (NLT) 16I am very happy now because I have complete confidence in you.
Paul now knows that this Church as a whole has matured to the place where he has plenty of proof that they’re willing to obey God and set aside everything that is offensive to the Lord.
Whenever there is a misunderstanding between people, the best remedy is a direct and open request for an explanation.
Matthew 18:15-20 (NLT) 15“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. 16But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. 17If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. 18“I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid£ on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. 19“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

Answering Two Questions from Verse 17
1) Why should they ‘Come out from among them?’
Answer: Because believers are the temple of the living God, which makes them a habitation for the Most High. They are a special people.
2) Who is the ‘them’ in this verse?
Answer: First and foremost, they are unbelievers. But Paul is not advocating absolute separation, but abstinence from any kind of familiarity.
What is it that Paul’s readers are to separate themselves from?
1) Gentiles, as the people of God are a separate people in election, redemption, and the effectual calling, and ought to be so in their conduct and conversation.
2) They ought to separate themselves from all superstition and from the evil customs and manners of the world.
Main Idea: A marriage can SINK or SWIM depending on how communication is sent and received.

Why Should I Be Water Baptized?
1. Baptism is about going public
2. Baptism is a discipleship and obedience issue

What is a Made Disciple?

Judgement

Two Observations
1. In this text, Jesus does not pray for the world, but for the believers in the world

- The dominant thing from our text that Jesus prays for is that we would internalize God’s love
John 17:26 (NLT) 26I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

How does the world know God is real?

A Study in 2nd Corinthians
Contemplation of New Life
2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (NLT) 1For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. 4While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit. 6So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
1 Corinthians 15:17 (NLT) 17And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.
John 5:25-29 (ESV) 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

- There is the judgment of the Great White Throne

Truths about Confession
1. Confession of who Jesus in your life is the rock upon which Jesus builds His church
2. If we confess faithfully, we are unstoppable
3. Satan tries to get us to reshape Jesus according to our liking
4. Satan’s biggest distortion is getting us to believe we have a Jesus who keeps us from suffering in this life
5. Jesus seeks committed followers, not anonymous consumers

Problems and human limitations have several benefits
· They remind us of Christ’s suffering for us
· They can keep us from pride
· They cause us to look beyond this brief life
· They prove our faith to others
· They give God the opportunity to demonstrate His power
· They bring an eternal reward

Homework Assignment: What type of people in your church family are more difficult for you to reach out to with the love of God? What will you do about it?
Luke 15:1-2 (NLT) 1Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. 2This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!

Evidence of God’s Hand

Main Idea: God chose us to be in covenant relationship with Him. He signed His part of the covenant with His Son’s blood.
Homework Assignment: Practice explaining what “The Gospel” is to someone. Practice explaining what “The Gospel” is to another Christian. Now, ask the Lord to help you share the gospel with someone this week who does not know Jesus as their Savior & Lord.
Main Idea: From the book of Ecclesiastes we learn that by taking heed to God’s Word, we can approach life with Godly and practical living.
Homework Assignment: Review the 10 signs that you might be a control freak and tell what is good about those signs and what can be bad about them.
Main Idea: Are you willing to doubt your doubts in the face of some substantial evidence that the Bible is true?
Homework Assignment: Would you be willing to have a one on one conversation with God and let Him know that you’re going to feed your faith and starve your doubts by trusting in Him and what He says?

Main Idea: We do not need to turn over a new leaf; we need a new life.
Homework Assignment: Discuss and write down the meaning of “the Gospel”.
Main Idea: God’s promises are true. When we face obstacles, will we walk in faith or fear?
Homework Assignment: What circumstance in your life right now tempts you to walk in fear? What are you going to do about this?
Main Idea: To understand “The Day of Atonement” in the Old and the New Testament. We all need atonement or redemption in our lives.
