People are reporting that previously posted obituaries are being flagged on Facebook by Meta’s algorithm as phishing scams or attempts to share malicious software.
I’m not sure if this problem is restricted to Canada, considering Meta’s recent decision to no longer allow sharing articles from Canadian news sources, but if that’s the case, then this is a terrible oversight on their part.
Resurfacing obituaries can be emotionally difficult for many people at the best of times, but flagging them as scams, and then requiring people to submit these posts for review without a way to explain why they’re not scams is ridiculously insensitive.
I have a feeling this will require more than just an “oops, we didn’t mean to do that” apology from Meta, although that’s likely the best we can hope for.
