1 Chronicles 16:4-6 “David appointed the following Levites to lead the people in worship before the Ark of the LORD—to invoke his blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel.”

As you read through the surrounding chapters and the book of Psalms, which was really a record of songs recorded and sung in David’s Tabernacle, you learn several things about the worship David designed. These characteristics are meant to shape the worship life of anyone who would seek the Lord:

Worship Life Characteristics

1. Spontaneous – 2 Chronicles 29:25-29

In other words, they did not say the same formula repeatedly; nor was there necessarily a set form. (At times they were led by a worship leader in singing and/or speaking specific Psalms. At times the people clearly worshipped God with singing, without the specific instruction to do so.)

1. From the Heart – Psalms 86:12, 111:1

This is the only kind of worship God ever desired.

1. In Humility – Psalms 51:15-17

Not self-willed, works-based perfection.

1. Regular and Often – Psalms 34:1, 119:164, 145:2

Frequently, daily, weekly etc.

1. All Together – 1 Chronicles 6:31-32, 15:16

David set up teams to ensure that the people could gather for worship with the aide (serving leadership) of musicians. Many Scriptures describe gatherings of “all the people” that included hearing the Scripture and singing their worship to God. (Of course, we also have many examples of private worship as well.)

1. Strong Emphasis on Praise – Psalms 148-150
