Thomas DeCarlo of DeCarlo Animation recently joined us @theroundtable to talk about his upcoming full-length animated film, The Encounter, which is based on the animated short of the same name that he created in 2018. The Encounter is being made for under $1 million with an unprecedentedly small team of 12 international artists. The Encounter, while appropriate for families, is written specifically for adults, not children. DeCarlo’s goal is to provide a more intellectual, emotionally complex storyline that addresses racism, xenophobia, and anti-intellectualism while providing strong female characters and a diverse cast. Pre-production on the film began in 2019, and much of the visual design has been completed. Actors will be recorded over the coming months, allowing the voice performances to drive final animation. The film is expected to be released in 2023.
