Our one-on-one interview with (NAME) proves that, regardless of your situation, you will succeed in your chosen career if you have the dream and vision, the initiative and the attentiveness, and, most off, the determination.

Here's what 6 things we've learned about Mars:

1. He came from extremely humble beginnings and literally slept on the streets. Growing up in the Tondo, Mars said that he didn't have specific aspirations then because what was in his mind was -- where would he sleep or clean up, what he will eat?

2. He experienced the harshest life in his youth but anchored everything on his strong faith in his Creator. In the streets, he met and became buddies with Rocky Gathercole. Rocky went on to make a name for himself in the creative industry and they lost touch for some time. Mars relayed an inspiring anecdote about his friendship with Rocky, especially before his death.

3. In his childhood, his first art "tools" were a cardboard box for canvas and charcoal (uling) for "crayons." But he created his first masterpiece, a portrait, out of bubble gum. He won a gold medal for it.

4. He started at the lowest level in production but this did not stop him from learning by observing. To this day, what he picked up from these observations is still the foundation of his work as a creative director, visual artist, and stylist.

5. Working with famous directors, including those in Hollywood, polished his craft. He was able to step his foot at this door based on recommendations and networking. But eventually, Mars' work spoke for him. International productions hired him because he's synonymous with quality. He admits he is expensive, and a perfectionist...but his clients know that they are paying. In our interview, he enumerated the best Hollywood actors he has worked with and has anecdotes about them.

6. Whatever success he created with his name, this didn't change his humanity, his discipline, and his principles in life. He also continues to attract good fortune because of his attitude. Mars once had mounted an exhibit financed by someone he did not personally know. He never expected that there are still kind people willing to support and believe in people like him.

SHOW'S RECAP:

There was a lot to unpack from our interview with Mel Cortez and I knew I did not make the mistake of calling this session "The Storyteller" because his colorful career as a photojournalist and photographer is truly one for the books.

Here are 7 things we learned about him:

He started his journey into photography after his brother gifted him his first camera. Unlike most people who took this as a hobby, he tried to sell his photos right away because he documented sports leagues and figured he could earn from it.
Mel eventually tried his hand at social documentaries and took photos of real-life events and issues that people need to care about. He built his network of photojournalists, even mentored a lot of them, and became the first chairman of the Photojournalist Center of the Philippines. However, he considers himself the "softest" among the lot because there are tougher and more hard-lined photojournalists than him.
However, he also established Decisive Moments, his wedding photography business. Admittedly, photojournalists aren't paid substantially in this country. With his talent, Mel introduced wedding photojournalism around the early 2000s. It proved to be a success because they used to cover more than 200 weddings a year.
He documented the 1989 coup and was right at the action of the bloody bombing in Camp Crame. He maintains that photojournalism is not for everyone. He said this isn't about the money nor the passion. "Ginagawa mo yan dahil gusto mong ipakita ang nangyayari; gusto mo ng pagbabago gamit ang kamera bilang instrumento mo."
During the interview, Mel confessed that he wasn't sure he could last the night because his usual routines have been on pause for such a long time as a result of the lockdowns. To keep his mind, body, and psyche active, he diversified and got into different businesses and now calls himself a "jack of all trades."
The controversy behind the "no-pay-no-shoot policy" in public landmarks a few years back started when he was teaching some students in Luneta and they were told off by the guards. He expressed his disappointment over it on social media and the topic immediately trended. Because of what happened, Mel saw the gaps in the industry that he felt had to be addressed so he established advocacies to protect photographers. He received both positive and negative feedback for the causes that he supports.
While he's still an advocate at heart, Mel said that he has mellowed down in recent years. Today, he focuses on the more amusing and humorous things in life and has enriched his spiritual relationship with his Creator.

In parting, Mel also wanted to let the new generation know that making a name in photography doesn't happen overnight; it is built by experience.

Handy To -- who doesn't know him? The friendly, neighborhood smiling Chinese guy is a very familiar personality for many people who frequent Greenhills, specifically Virra-Mall. His store, Abacus, has been there for ages and for a lot of Greenhills' physical transformation.

Handy and Abacus, are the old school source for many people into electronics, I.T., and photography. While Handy is seldom seen, because he's a very shy guy in real life, he has agreed to sit down with us to help us chart the beginnings of his family-owned business. SHOW RECAP:

It took us two years to land this interview but the wait was worth it -- it's probably one of my favorites. Here are x things we've learned from premier Filipino photographer, Lito Sy:

1. He came from a big family with 10 kids, and three of them ventured into photography. At a young age, he was already business-minded and had planned on moving from Davao to Manila to expand his opportunities.

2. One of his ambitions as a young man was to become a captain of a ship, who would get to see a lot of beautiful places and beautiful women. However, he ended in photography, where he still got to travel and take photos of beautiful people.

3. What keeps him grounded is his roots and background as someone who grew up in Davao. However, he was able to make a name in metropolitan Manila, and beyond, because of his charisma and approachable personality. He's quite the comedian in person.

4. He talked about his disappointments but acknowledged that these had to happen, had to be his destiny, to get to where he is today. One of his realizations now, when he's near retirement, is he should have a properly balanced work and family/personal life.

5. He's the ultimate romantic. In this interview, a lot of his reflections on his life and career are always attached to a memory of someone he used to love. By the way, he's single and still ready to mingle!

6. He's got a lot of hobbies because he wants to enjoy whatever he can while he's still physically and mentally able to. YOLO!

7. He opened up about what really happened with that controversial debutante photoshoot in Malacañang Palace in 2017.

8. He's contented and happy where his career got him and even named the people who believe will become the next Lito Sy. Watch the video to find out who!

We're so used to watching or reading about the photographer, the artist, or the photography groups and creatives but I think it's time we put the photography business bigwigs on center stage. I don't exactly have any idea how this show will go because my purpose isn't about marketing but more like getting to know the shop owners who have provided many of us with our gears and other necessities to do well in this industry.

So, we're starting another series on Boring Mondays. "BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!" The Shop Series but, like I said, it will not solely be about what the shops offer; it will also be about their running a business, the ups and downs, especially after COVID-19. I think it's also time to accommodate them in this show so they can have a dialogue with their patrons and for us to let them know why they make this hobby a lot more fun for us.

RECAP from last night's show:

Jo Avila opened up to us about his beginnings and experiences as a photographer but he also regaled us with stories about his life, his passion, and his bout with COVID in March 2020.

Here are 7 things we learned about him:

His father pushed him to be a lawyer since he started school. It was not what he wanted to pursue but he would sit in the photography classes at Ateneo, even if these weren't his electives.
One of the photography teachers noticed him and gave him his first job in a studio after he graduated. His father didn't like this, moreso when his father learned that one of Jo's duties was to sweep the floor. Jo, however, fell in love with his job on Day 1. The opportunities came when Jo would sub for the main photographer.
As his career flourished, with bookings left and right, Jo realized that he lost a lot of time with his family. Now, he has decided to scale back on work to pour more time with the people he loves.
It's his first time to talk about his brush with COVID in a video interview. In March 2020, no hospital accepted him in Metro Manila. He had to be transported to Sta. Rosa Laguna. Learn more about his fight and recovery in this episode.
His most prized possession? A Nintendo Switch.
He learned his first lesson in photography from Sesame Street: the worst photo to shoot is a cow eating grass. If you'd like to know why this is a bad photo, watch this interview.

Our next featured guest on PARC Here Live is none other than Jo Avila. His name was already prominent as a teacher of photography, post processing and color management when I started photography.

I could say that he's one of those who made Photography easy to grasp. He knows many of the secrets of photo-editing and he is someone I look up to when it comes to skills and technique.

A fellow techie, gamer, and geek in terms of technology, Jo is also a product endorser and before influencers were born, he was already there, testing, using and recommending the products that he uses himself.

He's also a COVID-19 survivor during the first wave and was saved by early intervention. Following this experience, he has undergone a lifestyle change to improve his health and we shall find out how he’s incorporating these changes to his work and other activities.

RECAP:

It's my first time to ever talk at length with Noli. I'm grateful he has agreed to sit with us on Parc Here because I got to experience how much he's an excellent storyteller.

Here are 7 things I've learned from Noli:

Since childhood, Noli has been exposed to the traditional and simple way of life, bearing the Ibatan values and traditions he grew up within Batanes.
His childhood and his environment have instilled and nurtured his adventurous side. In his younger years, you could say that he's someone like Indiana Jones, an undaunted, fearless, and diligent explorer.
And yet, in his 70s, Noli is still busy traveling and going on adventures. In fact, on the day of his interview with us, he just arrived from another travel. He has visited 90% of the Philipines but he has not yet been to Bohol. (Someone must bring him there!) He has an extensive collection of travel mementos because he makes sure to have a trinket or two of every visit. He also has a collection of fishing rods, which I think should be another full episode for discussion and show and tell later on.
He has five decades of experience in photography and is still as active and as sharp as the year he started. As a photography teacher, he said that he's happiest when he sees his students grow and develop.
He is an advocate for the environment and the local heritage of native cultures. As a kid, his elders taught him how to read the stars; to be in tune with nature, which somehow reminds me of the distinct skills of our fathers and ancestors. Despite this, he's not afraid to adapt to modern resources.
Some two decades ago, he was supposed to on a trip but he gave up his airplane seat for a government official. Unfortunately for the passengers, that plane crashed. So, every April, he commemorates the accident, as a reminder that he needs to continue doing something good in his life.
He cannot be boxed into a single type of photographer. His talent is diverse as he has done advertising photography, travel, documentary, birding, and underwater. He's like a Swiss-knife -- all-around and very useful.

Noli C. Gabilo is a Batanes-born documentary and landscape photographer. His work gave him the opportunity to see the beauty of the Philippines, cultivating a deeper love and appreciation for the scenery and the Filipino culture. It was also his photographs in the '70s and '80s that gave his hometown the world-class recognition it deserves in various magazines and books.

This photographer wants his work to inspire people to become stewards of God's gifts. A life-changing incident prompted him to share his knowledge and gifts by conducting workshops on training the eye to see an artistic angle.

Anyone who watched our interview with Ka Ador on PARC Here Live last January 22, 2022 will get a real sense that his passion is in teaching photography. Here are more things we learned about Ador:

1. He maintains the mantra that there is always room to learn, whether it's from your own colleagues or your students. As a teacher, he went the extra mile and made the effort to learn how every camera gear he could get his hands on, regardless of model and brand, so he could be ready with answers in case his students have technical questions.

2. Teaching photography was not in his plans after college. His parents wanted him to be a civil engineer and one of the first jobs he ended up with was for an airline company. In his travels, Ador realized that he should have documented his trips using a camera. A friend gifted him with one and that started the ball rolling for his journey into photography.

3. He is a self-taught photographer and learned the techniques by reading. He got his foot at the door as a photography teacher through the invitation of a friend. Over the years, he developed his skill and knowledge by learning to adapt to different concepts and styles. He didn't have a hard time switching to digital photography, which was slowly becoming the norm.

4. Ador didn't pursue other fields of photography, such as advertising or travel, because he found his calling in teaching.

5. He is cool about criticisms and said that it is part of learning. Fellow photographers have to learn to accept that analysis of their work will always happen.

6. His joys in life are very simple: it's his family. He's also a very practical person when it comes to passion vs income. He believes that you can still do what you love but then earn and save money from it, especially if you have a family to support.

After so many years, I finally got to catch up with one of the people who paved the way for me and many other creatives on our path to photography or the arts. Rosscapili has helped so many of us and we learned more about a different side to this well-known artist during our one-on-one chat on PARC HERE LIVE. Here's just some of what he shared to us about his life.

1. He came from humble beginnings. This gave him the drive to set and, more importantly, achieve goals that would make all of his sacrifices worthwhile. Persistency is in his bones, to the point of stubbornness, and he saw the limitations he faced as challenges to overcome, not barriers. In his struggles, he never let the put-downs or criticisms affect is output.

2. He made helping out other struggling artists an advocacy. As much as possible, Ross doesn't want other artists to go through what he has been through so he gives a lot of creatives the break they need, especially when he sees their potential. He doesn't just look for someone "good." He supports creatives with unique talents.

3. He's not afraid to explore. He believes that creatives aren't supposed to limit themselves as there will always be something to try. He also explained the value of an art and how it can appreciate and could potentially become an expensive collector's item. He talked about why artists and photographers should give value to their work by printing and signing these, and not just keeping it stored in a hard disk because you'll never know!

4. At the core of his focus is his family. He balances everything he has done in the hopes of giving his family the life and comforts they deserve. He's an artist and mentor to others, but he is a husband and father first and foremost.

Joining us on PARC Here Live! for December is none other than the esteemed visual artist, Ross Capili. He was the first person in the arts to give newcomers like me a break. During our time, his OWG Art Gallery in Makati was where we got to showcase our work. I remember he used to host a weekly get-together for photographers there, and that's where we were able to build long-lasting ties.

I'm delighted that he granted our invitation for this special interview, to catch up with an old friend who has contributed a lot to this industry. Here's your chance to get to know the artist, the arts advocate, and the champion of the creatives.

It has been a first-rate discussion with a man who's quite elusive about shining the spotlight on himself. We've finally unwrap some facets of Vic Sison, one of the outstanding photographers we know. Here are seven things we discussed and uncovered about him:

1. He delved into "Paintography" long before digital art came to be. As a painter inspired by Amorsolo, Vic's venture into the arts did not fully satisfy his creative drive. So, he decided to include photography as the missing formula in his works. In combining both, where he actually paints over his photographs -- think "old school" Photoshop -- Vic was able to find the perfect medium for him,

2. For Vic, "Teaching is learning twice," which means that, even as he's the instructor, he's also learning from his students. Though he acknowledged adapting too late with technology, to get on with the trends, he has his striking opinions about how this adaptation affected his work.

3. Vic's happiness is centered on his friends and as much as he is rarely marketing himself, he loves to know that people appreciate what he does. He's equally stimulated when people wonder and analyze his art.

4. He doesn't want to box himself in one genre and would instead want his output to speak for itself. Blowing his own trumpet is not his cup of tea.

5. Listen to him share a story about a cool place in Hidalgo that will remind people of Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. He and his friends call this "Ang Gubat."

6. Vic talked about his respect for photojourns who mutually reciprocate their appreciation for his work. During his heydey, there was healthy competition and the support system was different.

7. He named the people who were part of his success, including the 12 apostles.

We've been obliged by one of the country's well-respected photographers and we're eager to have him in the next episode of PARC HERE because he's quite the low profile powerhouse. It will be interesting to unpack who Victor Vic Sison is during our chat as I'm sure his many admirers would love to know facets about about his life and work as a painter, portrait artist and teacher. Despite his low key presence in the online world, Vic is one of the big wheels of the FPPF. As a lecturer for many years, he has influenced and motivated many photographers who went on to make a name for themselves.

PROPHOTOGRAPHER #COSPLAY #JAYTABLANTE

I consider Jay Tablante as my contemporary in this business and as our paths have crossed over the years, the Jay who sat down with us for a chat on PARC HERE LIVE last night has definitely evolved in his style and views in life. Commendably, he has become more creative, focused, involved, mature and fun...but here are 6 more things we learned from that chat:

1. His creativity, driven by his desire for perfection and attention to detail, all started with a gift from his dad, his one toy as a kid: a set of LEGO.

2. He will be bold enough to scratch or stop a project if he finds that it doesn't meet his level of expectation. He is his own worst critique.

3. As a self-confessed geek, whose into comics and video games, Jay prefers Marvel over DC because the characters are "already damaged." His favorite is X-Men because it tackled issues like racism before the fight against racism became a "woke" advocacy.

4. July is his sacred period, the only month in the year when he doesn't work. That's when he attends the widely popular Comic-Con event in San Diego to feed his love for all things geeky and bring out the kid in him.

5. He seeks inner peace and mental focus by practicing Jiu-Jitsu. It has done wonders for his physical health and well-being.

6. He is a true storyteller - perceptive and intuitive. He shared a bunch of great quotes and mantra with us, which he applies in his life.

Before photography, Jay Tablante's career goals were focused on IT and I don't believe he'd mind if we describe him as the ultimate geek. It's this side of him that set the path to the kind of work he's most likely known for: no one does Cosplay Photography as good as Jay!

However, he's also exceptionally good in fashion photography -- shooting lingerie models, celebrities and brands. How influential is his geeky side in his output? Does this factor into the level of execution of his work? There are plenty of good photographers in this country but Jay stands out distinctively -- does he have a formula?

Asking Bien Bautista to sit down with us was a shot in the dark because he's private and doesn't want the spotlight but we were thrilled that he didn't turn our invitation down. Here are seven things we learned from him:

1. He's a humble person, a reticent individual who would rather shine inconspicuously. Despite his highbrow social circle, he is low profile. He lets his work speak for itself.

2. Though he may appear introverted, he loves to crack jokes and likes to create a fun mood.

3. He's very passionate about the craft but wouldn't want to be a associated to a certain style of photography. He likes to create something that he knows his friends and colleagues will appreciate.

4. One of the true artists of his generation, Bien is not afraid to experiment on concepts and doesn't shy away from asking if he's curious about someone else's work.

5. He values equal time with his family and work, especially since his wife handles the business side of photography. They bond over his wife's love for Korean movies, which has filled up their Netflix queues. This has left him no choice because he enables what his wife loves.

6. The couple might be working on another book or exhibit from the materials he worked on during the pandemic.

7. He approaches life, problems and relationships with a stripped-down view of the world -- not fussy and harmonious -- because life should be fun.

If you're looking for a level of greatness to aspire for, as an artist / professional photographer, I'd say that you should go for the highest standard and be like the next Bien S. Bautista. For me, he's right up there with the pillars of the creative industry. If there's such a group of "high-born" Filipino photographers, Bien would be part of it.

If you take time to browse some of his work online or purchase his photography books, then you'll understand the brilliance of his artistry. But never one for creating much buzz, noise, or controversy around his name, Bien is quite the soft-spoken, fun and funny guy in person. I thought we're going to have a hard time convincing him to sit with us for a in-depth discussion on PARC Here but he was actually game for it -- a testament to his approachable personality despite his status.

So, join us on Saturday, September 25th 2021, 8:30PM (Philippine Standard Time). It's high time we unveil who is Bien behind the camera in "Está Muy BIEN" (It's very nice).

Today, the couple runs Liquid Concept, a catering company for private events and a consultancy firm aiding bar and restaurants in developing their drink lists and menu.

Everyone knows Margielyn Arda Didal, the Filipina street skateboarder who won worldwide admiration for bringing "GOOD VIBES" at the recently-concluded Tokyo Olympics 2020. One reason why she's such a happy sport is most likely because of her coach, Dani Bautista, who also radiates positive energy.

But did you know that coach Dani is an artist, videographer/filmmaker and photographer? As a creative based in Hong Kong & Cebu, he has worked with brands like Vans, Converse and Levi's. He has also received recognition from the Metro Manila Film Festival and the Upelikula Film Festival for his documentary, "TAGAD".

We finally got a glimpse of the life of the renowed and widely-acclaimed photojournalist, Edwin Tuyay. Having him on Parc Here was one of our aspirations since we started this series. We're extremely grateful he opened up to us about his experiences. Here are seven things we learned about Edwin Tuyay:

1. He started with two very simple camera but this didn't hinder him from producing great images. His creativity is not limited by his equipment.

2. When asked if he had thought of any other career path, he said that the only path for him was photography. His father, mother, wife and kids are also into photography.

3. Despite his work splashed all over prominent global magazines, he admitted that it was not all success. He made mistakes at work. He had bloopers and produced shots that didn't live up to his standards but he always looked for ways to resolve these mistakes. Because that's what professionals do.

4. Friends are part of his life. By nature, he's giving and helpful. He likes to invest in friendships because building good relationships with other people brings the best ROI in terms of support and care.

5. He is a god-fearing person, humble despite his accomplishments and his grandchildren are his treasures.

6. He said that pursuing photojournalism also made an impact on his humanity, especially with covering natural calamaties. He would dream of his experiences, of the people that were drawn the bad card in life. Being at the center of these tragedies also tugged at his consciousness to help out.

7. In our opinion, he's a jack of all trades but the master of everything.

His name will keep coming up when you talk about a photographer who is above the class. Perhaps he's the only person who can claim to have "shot all the presidents after Marcos." A respected professional, Edwin Tuyay (Edwin Tuyay Images) has had humble beginnings as a photojournalist and developed his visuals through hard work and determination.

Edwin also worked with some of the Philippines' premier film directors like Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal. His photos have graced the pages of Time, Newsweek and Fortune, to name a few.

In spite of his accomplishments, his heart overflows with support for his peers. We've heard stories of his kindness. Watch this episode for an insight into why we chose to call this episode, PUSO.

We consider G-nie Arambulo as one of the best photographers in the country because she can shoot any subject and scenario with an excellent eye and creative vision. So, it was our pleasure to get to know what's behind this talent. Here are six things we learned about G-nie:

She went through trial by fire as an apprentice for John Chua and wasn't allowed to hold any camera or use photography equipment for some time. Her first tasks with her mentor was to clean up during shoots.
Little did she know, the hardships and challenges she went through were important skills to learn so she becomes a polished professional photographer but there were also fun and amusing moments that made her sacrifices at work worth it.
Patience, focus, and having goals -- these are the best mindsets to have as an apprentice, according to G-nie. Everything given to her was part of her training to lead the company one day.
Loyalty matters to her. When her mentor passed away, she could have moved on to start her own company. She stayed in AdPhoto and retained the same people she worked with. Her staff has been her family.
Health is wealth. Even before the pandemic, she is more aware of the fact that health is more important. You can't work too hard if it means sacrificing your physical and mental wellness.
She is a coffee lover and relishes in her "me-time" with coffee.

It's been rare honor to have Harvey V. Chua join us for a chat online and we have uncovered these 5 nuggets (and more!) about her legacy, alongside her famous husband, the late John Chua.

1. Their advocacy to encourage and enjoin people to love photography is highly commendable, as they willingly impart knowledge and techniques that will help as any aspiring shooter improve and succeed.

2. Learning never stops for Harvey and she makes it a point to do mental exercises everyday. A book lover and a voracious reader, she loves the Encyclopedia Britannica.

3. During her active years with AdPhoto with her husband, she took charge of running the business while John's main focus was the creative side (photoshoots). She ensured the proper separation of their roles because it was important that they have to have balance to succeed.

4. Like any marriage, Harvey and John had trials but she could generally say their relationship was a healthy marriage. They worker out their trials together knowing that they're a lot stronger to weather anything as two people working side by side.

5. She has an admirable dedication to perfection and she does not sell yourself short. This is the advice she'd like to impart to those who want to pursue photography as a business or a career.

EPISODE 1 (PILOT) 07112020 Thanks to everyone who dropped-by and hung around with us for our pilot episode. It was a fun experience, despite the unavoidable technical problems of going live. Since this very new to us, it started a little bit shaky but we got the hang of it a few minutes during the show. We'e enjoyed the live interaction and we hope you did as well.
