Guy Montag is a fireman, whose job in this dystopian world, is to start fires rather than quell them. He burns books, and houses, and the people in the houses as books are against the law. He meets young Clarisse McClellan, his neighbor who asks him if he's happy. Guy's wife, Mildred has taken an over dose of pills and has to have her stomach pumped, but has no memory of it. Chief Beatty, Guy's boss has suspicions about Montag and pays him a visit at home.
