Jem is given a sedative and the family hears Scout's account of what has happened as she explains it to Sheriff Tate. Aunt Alexandra feels everything is her fault because she had a feeling something would happen. Scout says that through the commotion, she thought Atticus had come to help them. She realizes that it was the man in the corner who had helped them, and through her tears she says, Hey, Boo.
