This Psalm reminds us that we are sheep, and we easily go astray. It reminds us that we are prone to wander, and therefore the consistency of praying God's word, and crying out to Him, reminding ourselves who He is is critically important in our walk of Faith.
We end this series of Psalm 119 with a charge. Take one section of Psalm 119 that spoke to your heart - pray this Psalm back to God. Make these words your own cry for help. And your own heart's desire to remember His laws, His commands, His precept, His word.

How often during the day do your thoughts focus on praising God? The Psalmist in this section of Psalm 119 starting in verse 161, declares that seven times a day he praises God.
I just wonder, what would our lives look like if we gave God praise seven times a day? What would shift in our lives if we praised God seven times a day. I imagine those seven times would bleed over - and the seven would become 12 and then more. It would be an awareness and awakening of our souls for more of God!
Should we try it out? Are you willing to give it a go? Set your timer on your phone for seven times a day - and connect with one word - PRAISE or JESUS or GRATEFUL. Whatever word brings you closer to the heart of God! Let me know how it goes!

Today is our Memorial Day episode! We are so grateful for the men and women who have fought for our freedom! Thank you for those who have fought for us, and lost their lives on our behalf.
Today in Psalm 119, section RESH, we focus on God's character, the words that describe His truth, and the Psalmists cries for help. We can relate to the cries for help for sure, perhaps we can follow the lead of the Psalmist and follow our cries for help with affirmations of God's truth.

YODH or HAND, is the focus of this section of Psalm 119. It first and foremost focuses our gaze on the creator. His hands have made us (vs 73). Additionally, there are two words that are repeated throughout the Psalm, which are: good and let.
God is good. No matter what we face.
God in in control. No matter what we face.
It is for our good that we go through affliction, it shows us HE is good, and He is in control of all.

TETH is a paradox. This pinnacle verse in this section of Psalm 119 is a paradox that we each will experience and will have to wrestle through. The paradox is this, that affliction is for our good. Why is it for our good? Join me, and let's learn together what the Psalmist has to teach us.

I believe that prayer is not reserved only for times of difficulties, but in all times in all things.
Today we take a look at Jeremiah 33:3 and Matthew 6:6-7. We pray together for the desire for prayer to be birthed in us. That the desire would expand beyond prayer in church or in groups, but it would be a close and personal time with Jesus!

What is virtue? Virtue is moral excellence, it is the gauge of knowing between right and wrong. We are tempted to be swayed to and fro with blurry lines of right and wrong. 2 Peter 1:5a tells us to add to our faith (that God provides all we need) virtue. Virtue is our gift back to God!
I encourage you to examine your virtue, and use Proverbs 31 (a wife of noble character) as a guideline for your life.
Advent is a season of longing for the long-expected Savior. As we long for Jesus' return, let's get our lives in order, watch and pray and be ready for His return.

"Where were you when...?" This is the question started that God spoke to Job after Job made the assumption that his circumstances were an indicator that God had left him. And God responds with correction - when he asks Job where he was when God created the foundations of the earth.
This passage pushes back on our tendency to assume or presume that we know God's intentions, we know why things are the way they are, or how they will unfold. We don't know from one moment to the next what is coming our way, and we have no understanding of why God allows what He does. These verses call to the root of our pride and cull it out - and help us to put God in His rightful place, and us in our place, submitted to the sovereignty and knowledge of God.

In the story of Joseph we meet his brothers who are so jealous of him it drives them to sell Joseph into slavery and then deceived their dad, making up a story about Joseph being mauled by a wild animal. This deception comes back to haunt them years later as they meet Joseph face to face in their greatest desperation - food - and Joseph is the one who holds their future in his hands. We see Joseph, one who could have allowed bitterness to be planted deep into his soul rise to the occasion allowing God to be glorified and trusting that God had a plan all along - to save his family from the famine.

Greed makes us take what doesn't belong to us. We see this unclose in the story of Ghazi, Elisha, the prophets servant, who witnessed Elisha turn down gifts and blessings from Naaman. The prospect of Naaman's gifts was too great for Gehazi to pass up. So he took it upon himself to go get them, and get even more for himself. His greed drove him to his own demise.

I can only imagine that the story-telling of Abraham telling Pharaoh and Abimelech that Sarah was his sister made it through the camp. I can imagine Sarah even complaining to her maid-servants that Moses made her tell others she was his sister. Do you think Isaac would have known these stories? Or maybe it was even a lesson he was taught -for their own protection, of course- as they were venturing from place to place to the promised land.

Abram now named Abraham, falls into the same habit of lying to protect. In Genesis 20, we find Abraham and Sarah moving to the Negev. As a part of ensuring safe passage through the land Abraham again tells that Sarah is his sister - ignoring the fact that she is his wife. Again a plague was on the land and the people feared the Lord, but many were harmed because of Abrahams decision to repeat the same half-truth.

Abram convinced that Pharaoh would not allow him to live if he knew beautiful Sarai was his wife, lied to try and save his own hide, causing Sarai to be caught in the middle and a great plague to come to Pharaoh's home. David, the man after God's own heart was not immune from sin. In fact, he slept with another man's wife. Bathsheba became pregnant. And David assumed because of his position, he could cover up his sin. Instead, he was confronted and rebuked by the prophet Nathan. Today we look at Nathan's rebuke. Jesus, in the lineage of Ruth and King David, is the ultimate example of staying when it's easier to run away. He could have fled the scene on many occasions throughout his life. David came from a strong line of faithful people. He learned the importance of staying. His life was a training ground for the calling God was placing on his life - to become the King of Israel. David was trained as a warrior-shepherd. It was his willingness to stay, even when there was a predator, and face the predator head on. He trusted God's presence with him.

Ruth, daughter in law of Naomi. Naomi was widower and bereaved mother. Ruth was given an out, since her husband died, to go back to her own land, to her own people. Yet instead, Ruth chose to stay. She chose to stay with her mother-in-law in her grieving, in her bitterness, in her heartache, in moving and finding a new life. Ruth's story and her choice to be faithful to her commitment to mother in law teaches us a lot about character, and set up the character of the coming kings.
Through Ruth's son Obed the line to King David and eventually to King Jesus. Because Ruth chose to stay generations were blessed.

Jonah, was a prophet called by God to draw the hearts of lost men and women back to God. Jonah's reaction to God's request - to run, flee to another city, believing that God would not find him amid his running. Yet we know God finds him - and eventually Jonah makes the choice to say YES to God's calling.

Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet. He was called to prophesy to people who were prone to wander, and to turn their back on God, seeking other Gods. Idol worship was rampant throughout Israel, God's chosen people. In Jeremiah 2, we read of Jeremiah pleading with the people of God to stop running to other God's and turn back to become reunited with the one true God.

Fear drives us away. Fear closes us off to love, hope, peace, comfort and joy that God has available. It closes us off from solutions. Today we will address this topic of staying when it's easier to run away because of fear.
We will walk through a portion of Elijah's story and see how fear played into his reaction to Jezebel's threat to take his life and therefore run away and hide. Shame is a tool that Satan uses to keep us small and from stepping out in faith. If we hide behind shame, we feel the weight of what we have done is too big for God to forgive, it's too big for him to wash away, and it certainly means that we are not usable for God's kingdom. Well, these thoughts may feel accurate at times, but they are lies from the evil one.
Walk with me today through a portion of the story of Adam and Eve and see how their shame played into their desire to run away from God and hide. May we learn today from this story what it looks like to stay, and allow God to take away our shame, basking in the joy and glory of his ability to take away every sin. No matter how big it seems to us - God can handle it.

Arrogance is a close cousin to Boasting. Like boasting arrogance is self-focused instead of others-focused. Arrogance points to the divisions and distinctions. It's a cover for the low self esteem that exists within the arrogant persons mind and heart. Love isn't arrogant, which means it doesn't take others for granted.

Envy. Envy acts in opposition to love. Envy distracts from the ability to love others because it focuses have versus have not. This month we continue looking at love. Loving others, when it's easier to hate. Loving others, when it would be easy to envy what others have. Envy focuses on the gaps between us, love focuses on Jesus, the one who bridges all gaps.

1 Corinthians 13 is known as the love chapter. And February is known as the LOVE month (thank you Hallmark)! Appropriately, then we are studying love this month! Each Cup of Hope we will take a look at a section of the verses from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Verse 4 tells us, "love is patient." We see the demonstration of patient love through the life of Jesus Christ.
Today we dig into patience that comes as an outflow, as a result of love. We know that loving others is not easy. Choosing patience, choosing love requires intentionality. And requires a life surrendered to God.

Romans 1:23 tells of those who exchange the glory of God - who fixed their eyes on what was seen - for the glory of what was visible. Wisdom. What is it? How do we know if we have it? Well, according to Paul in his letter to the Roman church, he identifies that there were a lot of "knowledgeable" people. People who knew God, but did not have HIS wisdom. Wisdom is demonstrated through actions. It's one thing to have the head knowledge, yet another thing completely to employ the knowledge. Having wisdom is not about "fixing" others and their issues, or our own.
My prayer for us is that we would not allow knowledge to get in the way of wisdom. Knowing God & knowing His word, yet not being transformed by the power of God's word & truth. Praying that we do not become as Paul describes- "Claiming to be wise, they became fools."

The gift of salvation is untouchable. There is not greater gift that we can receive than the gift of salvation. However, as the "honeymoon" phase of salvation wears off, sometimes the excitement and joy of our salvation wears off.
One way to keep the joy from wearing off, or to rebirth the joy is the recount all that God has done - and share his goodness, the goodness of giving us the opportunity to experience freedom from sin, death, guilt, shame and the heaviness of this life.
God takes the bricks that are piled up on our shoulders and casts them off. Join us today on Cup of Hope and meet Jesus for the first time or take time to remember the God of your salvation and share your story with someone.

Salvation is a gift from God. It is a gift that only he can give. It is a gift to be received. We can choose to know the gift exists - yet not receive it. Not believe that it is true for us, and therefore miss out on the benefits & blessings of the gift.
In Psalm 62:1 & 7 David writes of the blessings of the gift of salvation. He knew where his salvation came from. And he felt, lived and walked in the blessings of salvation from God. In salvation he found rest, he stood on a solid foundation for his life and he experienced refuge.
Through salvation God was his rest, foundation and refuge. May we experience the same blessings and benefits that David did!

We look to God to be our demonstration of faithfulness. He cannot be unfaithful, because faithfulness is His character. With his spirit living in us, we also have the power to be faithful. May we be surrendered enough to allow the Holy Spirit to work and move in us.

In Paul's letter to the Galatians he reminds of them of the gifts of living in the spirit as sons and daughters of God. He reminds them, and us that our old self has been crucified - it dies on the cross - and now we have the ability to live as in the spirit - with the fruit of the spirit!

Psalm 19:12-13 describes spiritual blind spots as "Unintentional sins" and "hidden faults." Sometimes we are just not ready to face them. Sometimes we know they are there and ignore them. Sometimes we just don't know we are acting out of alignment with God.
BUT we can ask. We can ask God to show us, to bring these sins to our attention and help us to rectify them.
God wants to cleanse us fully and completely, melting a way every spec of sin that separates us from Him.

As we continue to read Psalm 19, this verse reminds us that what we say - especially what we say to ourselves can make a great impact on our heart condition. As we lean on God to be our source, he is our rock -which means we have a solid foundation. And He is our redeemer, which means that we are set free because of the price Jesus paid for us on the cross.
It's great news indeed!

I believe God is a God who gives in abundance. He provides all we need. Just as he dresses the flowers of the fields and the birds of the air. He cares for us. Sometimes though, we leave blessing on the table. We have not, because we ask not.
Do you believe and trust that God will provide for your every need?
In Genesis 22:14 Abraham named the altar he built on Mount Moriah "Jehovah Jireh." Abraham was asked to give up what was most precious to him, Isaac, the blessed gift of the promise of God. It was the one thing he held most dear. YET he was willing to give Isaac up. And just at the right time and in the right place a lamb was provided to take Isaac's place.
Abraham's willingness to give it all up, lead to God's provision of the lamb. God wants our obedience. He wants our trust. He wants our affections. More than anything else.

Who doesn't want favor? Right? I think we all want to be viewed as worthy to be favored.
Exodus 17:15 we read of Moses building an altar before God and naming it "Jehovah Nissi" or "the Lord is my banner". The Lord is the one who leads me! Moses and the Israelites fought and beat the Amalekites. And after the battle, Moses built this altar. He knew that the Lord was with them in the battle.
The battles of this life as certain. We will face many throughout our life times. But what is also certain is that the Lord will be with us, through each and everyone. Psalm 20:5 says, "Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our Lord!"
The victory is already won!

Today on Cup of Hope we talk about Jehovah Shalom - "the Lord is Peace." This definition of peace is even greater than our typical understanding. It is a peace that is whole, lacking nothing, nothing broken and nothing missing. Peace with God looks like having just what we need!
This account of calling God, Jehovah Shalom can be found in Judges 6:24 when Gideon built an altar after the Lord had lead them into battle to defeat the Midianites. Read also Psalm 29:11. God will bless His people with SHALOM!

We all want to produce fruit. But what is required to grow real, lasting fruit? Proverbs tell us that the fruit of righteousness is a tree of life. Interesting. The fruit is an actual tree - which has the capacity to bear its own fruit. When we win souls for the kingdoms, when we produce kingdom fruit we are wise.
Wisdom is often described as good decision making. Good decisions are only half the battle - wisdom is about living a purposeful life and a life of impact for the kingdom.
