In the February 3rd, 2003 edition of the New York Times, Psychologist Lauren Slater wrote an article entitled, “The Trouble With Self-Esteem.” Her conclusion was that low self-esteem wasn’t really a problem in the United States. She states that, “people with high self-esteem pose a greater threat to those around them than people with low self-esteem.” This flies in the face of all the gurus of “self-help” who constantly bombard us with new ideas to improve our self-esteem. But if having better self-esteem isn’t the solution, does that mean that we should have a low self-esteem? According to Jesus the solution isn’t to think less of myself either. The real solution isn’t to think more or less of myself but to think of myself less. This is what it means to die to self and this is our next installment in the Call To Surrender.
