The book of Ruth is like an oasis in the desert. After story upon story of grim narrative, treachery, and tragedy -e.g., the bulk of Numbers through Judges-, Ruth paints a picture of beautiful redemption. Not only does Ruth tell the story of how a Gentile women became a part of the people of God, but it also shows how that same woman became a part of the linage of King David -4-18-22-, and David's greater son, our Lord Jesus Christ -Matt. 1-5-. All of this is made possible by God's providential care through the loving-kindness of Ruth's kinsmen redeemer, Boaz. The book of Ruth is a picture of faith and beautiful redemption, and it is a welcome break from the treachery and tragedy that surrounds it on all sides.
