There are lies we all believe. Intellectually, we know the lie is wrong. But we find it difficult to reject the lie in practice. We know we shouldn't embrace it, but we live in light of it anyway. The second lie we believe is that my faith is just between me and God. We translate the philosophy of the culture-at-large that: “it’s all about me" into our Christian faith. The truth we must embrace is that we are made for each other. We are all vital parts of the Body of Christ.

View Details

The first lie we believe is that I am what I do. The value and worth of people are too often determined by production and output. The truth we must embrace is I am who God says I am.

After looking at the internal qualities needed for a church to live in unity, Peter continues the letter with instructions on suffering. Suffering isn't meaningless. Jesus Christ is the grand personage in the Bible, and love is the greatest theme. Christianity is not a story of morality, heroic figures, or laws and commandments. It is a story of sacrificial love and grace. Today as we light the advent candle of love, we will focus on how love is manifested in Creation, the Incarnation, the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, and throughout eternity.

View Details

Joy is the smile of the soul. C.S. Lewis once noted that- “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” In the life to come, joy will permanently mark the people of God. In the here and now, joy can truly be experienced. While joy starts in the heart, it manifests in the face.

We are called to live lives that honor God by respecting others. A life of honor/respect is the most compelling way to point others to Jesus.

View Details

Peter continues his exhortation by focusing on the response of slaves to mistreatment. Slaves, as those with no rights, become a model for all Christians who may well be despised and rejected in the world. But the mistreatment toward Christians should not be a shock to his readers. The whole book is full of allusions to suffering. But their suffering is simply in line with the treatment of Jesus. Peter explains how Christ suffered as an example for them but then reminds them that His death was more than an example: it was an atoning sacrifice for their sins. At one time, they were outside the fold, but now, by God's grace, his readers have come back to the care of the Great Shepherd who guards their souls, no matter what life holds for them.

View Details

Dan Roeber and Russell Matherly discuss the topic of deconstruction and the Evxangelical movement.

View Details

Peter now turns our attention to how we live a life of submission to God in this world. In this section, he covers the government. Later he writes about work and the home. A keyword in this section is honor. We are called to live lives that honor God. We honor God by respecting others even if/when we disagree with them; and even when they wrong us.

Dan Roeber and David McNeely chat about nationalistic theology!

View Details

After fleshing out what it looks like to have a living hope, Peter reminds the people that God will never stop working. Jesus gave a promise to Peter that He would build His church. Peter remembers those words and calls the church to trust in what God is doing.

View Details

Dan Roeber and Mike Shockey chat about the prosperity gospel and how it has become a prominent theology in our world today. They also share examples of how this theology distorts our view of the gospel.

View Details

Peter begins to flesh out what it means to have a living hope. A living hope always begins and ends with who God is and what He has done. In this section are four commands for God’s people. These commands are four ways we respond to God.

View Details

Dan Roeber and Todd Veleber chat about liberal theology!

View Details

The first thing Peter writes about is God. He points the church to what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do. God guarantees our salvation. We then can rejoice in our salvation. Even though life is hard, we have hope. And that hope is a living hope.

View Details

Dan Roeber and Bob Evans chat about reformed theology and why it's important in our Christian walk.

View Details

Peter wrote a letter to several churches located in modern-day Turkey. They were an eclectic group with a common faith and a common suffering. Peter believes the grace of God will enable them to stand firm in the midst of suffering. He would know. That grace of God radically transformed him. One word has been used more than any other to describe this great letter to the church - hope. And all people, in all places, at all times, need hope.

View Details

Dan Roeber and Mike Shockey chat about developing your theology through the lens of Scripture and God's character. They also talk about how to filter sources that influence your theology.

View Details

Hebrews 11 has been called the “Hall of Faith.” It recalls the life of some Old Testament saints who trusted God in some extraordinary circumstances. Verse 16 tells us: “they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one.” In other words, they knew something “better” was coming. Something better is coming. In heaven, we will worship always and only. Every thought, word, and deed will be an act of worship. In perfection, we will live out the command, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:31‬).

View Details

Dan Roeber and Bob Evans chat about the goal of theology- to know God's character and become more like Him!

View Details

Dan Roeber and David McNeely chat about what theology is and why it matters in the Christian life.

View Details

Everyone is guilty of disordered worship because apart from God, we are morally rebellious at our worst (See Romans 1:18). Even as Christians, we are still dealing with the remaining corruption of our flesh. But we can be fundamentally sincere worshippers because we are being transformed by the Spirit and have a new nature that desires to please God. Mark 10:17-22 is a helpful passage to examine some of the dangers of disordered worship. Here we find a man with a tender conscience who wanted to know from Jesus what he had to do to inherit eternal life. We discover three clear attitudes of his heart that can help us define our own struggle with disordered worship. It has nothing to do with style, musical preference, liturgical dress, formality, or informality but has everything to do with the idols of our own heart and an accurate perception- both of ourselves and the character of God.

View Details

Dan Roeber and David McNeely chat about this season's theme of why theology matters and our new Plan to Grow!

View Details

In the Scriptures, worship is defined as how we live our lives. Everybody worships something, and what we worship will determine who we become. If our worship is disordered (that is, pointed away from God), our lives will follow suit. But if our worship is ordered (that is, pointed toward God), our lives will follow suit.

Sometimes God places a burden on our hearts so that we will pray from a distance. Other times God places a burden on our hearts so that we will pray and do something while up close. When God calls you to action, don’t wait for someone else to do what needs to be done.

Holiness is a term we’ve all heard. We know God is Holy and that He calls His people to be Holy, but what exactly is Holiness? Does it matter if we do not understand what Holiness is? Does it affect our daily lives? And most importantly, does it matter to God that we have a biblical understanding of it? The answer is yes. God is Holy, and He calls His people to be Holy.

Habakkuk 3 is actually a Psalm used in Israel's worship. We know this from the musical definitions Shigionoth, Selah, and "to the Choirmaster." In poetic language, Habakkuk records God's power and character in both the Exodus and conquest of Canaan. His insight into the character of God provides the basis for his absolute trust even though everything in his world is about to collapse. His trust in the presence of absolute upheaval is a model for every Christian.

View Details

After dealing with deeply troubling questions in Chapter 1 about unanswered prayer and the problem of evil, Habakkuk now understands that the Lord will judge evil Babylon. This judgment is found in a series of "Woes" in 2:6-20. This morning, we consider two of these woes which have particular relevance to our own lives.

View Details

Habakkuk's prophecy occurs shortly before the Babylonian invasion of Judah in 605 BC. The oracle begins with Habakkuk in great distress. The prophet is reeling from unanswered prayer and deep perplexity about how the Lord could use a very evil nation to discipline His covenant people. The remainder of the book (chapters 2-3) reveals God's ultimate plan so that by the end of the prophecy, Habakkuk experiences a great reorientation of his faith. The book ends with Habakkuk in complete surrender to the will of God- no matter what happens in life. There are many practical applications we will explore in this 4-week series.
