Rape sexual assault and sexual abuse, taboo topics… but are more common than you realise. We need to educate our children that sex, without consent, is unacceptable before it’s too late.
Thank you, Nina Malone, for joining me today. How can sexual assault victims rebuild their self-worth? What should we be teaching our children about being polite vs listening to their gut? This series is on Sexual Assault. Nina runs a Black Dope Mums group, a digital safe space for black women to navigate motherhood together.
Nina’s favourite quote is: “We must learn and then teach our children that niceness does not equal goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction; it is not a character trait. People seeking to control others almost always present the image of a nice person in the beginning. Like rapport-building, charm, and the deceptive smile, unsolicited niceness often has a discoverable motive.” Gavin de Becker

Rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse, a taboo topic ………. but is more prevalent than you may realise. We need to educate our children that sex, without consent, is not acceptable before it’s too late.
Thank you, Peter Dundon (AKA Benny) for joining me today.
This series is on Sexual Assault. Benny and I have brought together the stats and information on the topic of Sexual Violence, the umbrella term used for Rape, Sexual Assault, and Sexual Abuse. Here are the links to the articles Benny and I referred to with definitions of the terms, the myths about sexual assault, and statistics. We have come to realise that the cases reported are much lower than actual instances as people are ashamed a feel they have no self-worth.

Rape Crisis England and Wales Sexual Violence Statistics - https://rapecrisis.org.uk/get-informed/about-sexual-violence/statistics-sexual-violence/
All 3 speakers have had mass destruction in their lives due to the continuous sexual abuse as children. All 3 speakers were abused for many years. All 3 speakers have taken many years to heal and find peace. It is not a linear recovery.

How can sexual assault survivors build their strength to cope through life? It’s a long journey when you have been groomed for 5 years by someone you and your family trusted. Hear Derek Bell’s story about how George Ormond won his family over, as a trusted football coach to groom Derek and many other young boys. https://youtu.be/rhy7x4SWFng
Derek runs a company that does safeguarding, and mental health first aid training called Caroll and Bell consultancy. https://www.carollbellconsultancy.com/
This is the link to the original case in 2002 (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1416292/Football-coach-gets-six-years-for-abusing-boys.html), where Derek admits he didn’t have the mental strength to divulge his anonymity. Then in 2018 (article: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jul/04/paedophile-football-coach-george-ormond-jailed-for-20-years), other footballers spoke out and George was jailed for 20 years, with 35 indecent assaults and one count of indecency. As the judge from this case said to George: “Some victims you do not even remember – what was for you momentary sexual gratification was for your victims a lifetime of difficulty.” It is a LIFETIME of difficulty for anyone in this situation. If you know anyone, at work, in your family or friends who has been through this, you need to be patient and understand they will go through their ups and downs - support them continuously.

Rape sexual assault and sexual abuse, a taboo topic ………. but is more common than you realise. We need to educate our children that sex, without consent is not acceptable, before it’s too late.
Thank you, Nina Malone, for joining me today. How can sexual assault victims rebuild their self-worth? What should we be teaching our children about being polite versus listening to their gut?
This series is on Sexual Assault. Nina runs a group called Black Dope Mums, a digital safe space for black women to navigate motherhood together. https://dopeblackmums.co.uk/
Nina’s favourite quote is: “We must learn and then teach our children that niceness does not equal goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction; it is not a character trait. People seeking to control others almost always present the image of a nice person in the beginning. Like rapport-building, charm and the deceptive smile, unsolicited niceness often has a discoverable motive.” Gavin de Becker

Breaking news! Did you know I have published a book?
“Emotional Fitness: A-Z for Positive Mental Health”, is a self-help book to help you bring positive mental health into your life. Click here to buy.
Do you want to get the most out of life? Do you want to take charge of your emotions? Do you want to stay in control of your mental health? This wellbeing book will help you help yourself to have positive mental health.
People who are not coping are sometimes expected to move on or told to ‘get a grip’ or ‘get over it’. Sometimes society may put pressure on us to suppress our feelings or we may feel we can’t talk about emotions. The stigma of poor mental health may cause us to withdraw or cover-up. Sometimes we regret reacting to our emotions. We then live with the impact our reactions have caused and maybe their negative consequences.
Does menopause cause depression?
Thank you, Kathryn Colas - 'Making Sense of Menopause', for joining me today. This series is on Menopause. Kathryn runs a company called Simply Hormones.

What do you know about grieving? Is grieving just about death?
Grieving has many more aspects to it than death as we found out from our series for Mental Health Chats on grieving. Thank you, Peter Dundon (AKA Benny) for bringing all the facts together.
In the series, Monica Kleijn Evason and Tina Mitchell Skinner gave different aspects of death.
Ann Allen opened up the conversation of grieving, helping us to understand that grieving isn’t just about death.
Benny’s 3 take-home messages are:
1) We need to normalise death and destigmatise.
2) Be prepared for the grieving process as it takes time to heal. We shouldn’t try to speed people up.
3) Understanding and supporting others will ease the pain for the person dying and the grieving process.

Do you understand grieving? Is grieving just about death?
Thank you, Ann Allen, for joining me today. This series is on Grieving. Ann helps people get out of sadness and back into their life. She deals in recovery and moving forward and helps people redefine their life, blossom, get their lives back, and have a purpose, having a new life with identity. Going from despair to opening up a new life.
Ann says that grief can be defined as your normal and natural emotional reaction to any loss that is significant to you. It may not be important to someone else but it is important to you. We will all experience over 42 different losses in our life.
Loss and grief are so much more than death and dying. The ways we can understand grief for someone who has gone through loss are:
1) Everybody is different. Every relationship is unique. We have different ways of reacting.
2) There is no timeline, it is not necessarily linear.
3) We can’t fix someone. We can support them and listen to them. It’s about them. We may say things that are intellectually true, but they may not help people emotionally.

Do you talk about death?
Thank you Monica Evason for joining me in this first episode of this series on Grieving.
Monica is based in Barcelona and is a mindset coach. Throughout Covid-19 Monica has coached people through coping with death, and as a result, has been nicknamed ‘The Death Coach’. Monica talks to medical staff, families, and those people with Covid-19 about the stages of death, their attitude and approach to death, how to have the conversation, giving them emotional and social support, and helping them through the process. Monica has learnt the following about death:
1) We need to normalise death and talk about death, opening up the conversation.
2) Adults need to be role models on how to look at death.
3) We need to understand the pain and empathise with others who are grieving as it takes a long time to heal. Grief can last a lifetime.
Monica suggested the Book, “With the End in Mind” by Kathryn Mannix. She said it is a difficult read and is very informative.

Mental Health Chats: Men and Mental Health – Facts we Should Know – Peter Dundon (AKA Benny)
Are you aware that 75% of suicides in #Australia and #UK are men? Let's support our men and keep talking about their emotions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b034m933ue0
Peter Dundon (AKA Benny) is here to bring together the huge topic of Men’s Mental Health and give us some facts.
Benny summed up the main messages from Warren Davies and Rob Osman. Both men gave advice from their own personal perspective. Warren’s message was about coping in isolation. Benny likes Rob’s angle to go for a ‘walk and talk’ as the different environment facilitates discussion. The greatest challenge men have, is to ‘open up’ due to the stigma.
Dr. Jason Spendelow outlined the 3 key components of flexible masculinity as being: flexible thinking, flexible behaviour, and having a compassionate mind.

This Mental Health Chat is dedicated to John Bourke, who was a dear friend of Benny’s and took his own life. Were you aware that on average there are 135 people who are impacted by the death of a loved one by suicide? There are 15 suicides a day in the UK and 8 suicides a day in Australia.
Thank you Peter Dundon for joining me to give us some facts and figures about suicide. We are aiming to break down the stigma of suicide, understanding that people complete their life as they are so low and cannot see any other way to cope. Every situation is different and we should open up conversations to help people who have suicidal thoughts.
The reason why we do not refer to the term COMMIT suicide is that suicide has been decriminalised. In the UK, the law changed in 1961, and in Australia, the different states followed the changes in law at different times. To name a few, in NSW, Australia, the law was lifted in 1983 with Queensland and Western Australia never having suicide as a crime.
The terms to be aware of are passive suicide ideation and active suicide ideation. Passive suicide ideation is where someone does not want to live, they may have suicidal thoughts but do not want to complete their life. Active suicide ideation is where someone does want to complete their life and is active in the process. If we have early intervention and talk about the thoughts, we may be able to stop someone becoming active.
Sue Mulrenan, Tony Phipps, and Declan McGann all said we need to open up conversations, talk to people, and ask the question, “Have you had suicidal thoughts?”

Thank you, Declan McGann, a mental health nurse who has worked on crisis teams, for giving us first-hand advice about how to support someone who have tried to take their own life. Declan gave the following advice:
1) Suicide is common and it happens to people from all walks of life.
2) Focus on support networks, family, and friends to help with recovery.
3) The journey of recovery is unique for the individual, the recovery is ‘up and down’ and will be transitional over time. Do not shy away from having the conversation and talking about their experience and how they are feeling.
4) A care plan for recovery could be worthwhile for the road to recovery to identify early warning signs and potential triggers, as people will have blips.
5) Depression and low mood is about past based experiences whereas anxiety is about things that haven’t happened yet, what may happen in the future.
Peter Dundon (aka Benny), will be back for the next chat to give more interesting facts about suicide. #MentalHealthSupport #OnlineMentalHealthSupport #MentalHealthFamilySupport #SuicidePrevention #SuicideHelp #SuicideAwareness #SuicideCharities
Mental Health Chats: Sue Mulrenan – Suicide – Using the Right Language to Help?
What would you do if you saw someone trying to jump off a bridge to take their own life? What would you say?
Thank you, Sue Mulrenan, an Ambulance Emergency Care Assistant, for giving us first-hand advice about what to say and do. One piece of advice Sue gave is to realise that every person’s advice is very unique to them as an individual, and not to be frightened about using the word suicide. Engage with them and realise they would have been thinking about taking their own life for some time. Opening up conversations about suicide is important. Life is precious. We need to start talking about suicide, instead of thinking it is a taboo topic.
Watch Jonny Benjamin’s YouTube with Neil Laybourn. Jonny has written a book called Stranger on the Bridge you may also be interested in reading.
Sue gave some very important UK phone numbers to help if you are considering suicide, or if you know someone who is. They are
Samaritans 116 123, Papyrus for Young People 0800 068 4141, and Young minds Parents 0808 802 5544. There will be similar organisations in other countries.

Mental Health Chats: Tony Phipps – Suicide - Do you ‘Really’ Understand it?
Were you aware pre-Covid-19, the statistics for suicide is 15 a day in the UK and 9 a day in Australia? That is more than fatalities on the road. We need to talk about the taboo topic of suicide and not 'brush it under the carpet'. Listen in to this series to understand more.
What advice would you give someone who was thinking of taking their own life? What advice would you give the loved ones of those who have taken their life?
Thank you, Tony Phipps (HSSEQ), a former marine who has first-hand experience of suicide. I have listened to this interview a few times before publishing it. Every time I have felt emotional, as well as relieved that we have people like Tony who are willing to open up conversations about the taboo topic of suicide. Life is precious. Thank you, Benny, for researching facts and statistics about mental health and young people. Jason Lincoln, Hannah Stainer, Ben Lovatt, and Peter Dundon have opened up our eyes on how we can help teenagers and young people with early intervention for mental health concerns in order to support them to have positive mental health. As parents, how do we spot the signs of mental health concerns of our teenagers and young people? Or, are they just being teenagers?
Thank you to my guest, Hannah Stainer, a mental wellbeing coach for youth in the UK. Hannah talks about how parents and carers of young people can spot the signs of mental health concerns, as well as techniques of when and how to have conversations. Hannah reiterated the point Jason Lincoln mentioned last time about the fact that teenagers and youth may feel more comfortable when talking to other people in their ‘village’ other than their parents.

Thank you Margaret Powe, for asking about middle management, and asking if PTSD strikes when middle managers retire. Margaret said, “This may be because all they’ve known is many years of hard work, exercising to get them through, and not wanting to easily let go of the work side of their lives. They may even realise their work-life was traumatic!”
Benny and I found it difficult to find an article on Mental Health with regards to middle managers. Most of the articles we found were around middle managers helping their teams with their mental health. Here is one article written by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, UK in April 2018: https://www.cipd.co.uk/about/media/pr... You may notice in the article that middle management is only a small paragraph. This makes us wonder, are middle managers looking after everyone else and not being looked after themselves?
Let's reach out to as many people as possible. We are hoping to build awareness for anyone suffering from a mental illness to realise they are not alone and we are here for them. You are welcome to like, comment, share and ask questions. Thanks for listening. #mentalhealth #albies #mentalhealthintheworkplace #mentalhealthfirstaid #wellbeing #anxiety #depression #stress #middlemanagers

Today I talk with Peter Dundon (aka Benny) on having emotional fitness to prevent mental health concerns. Benny was a mate of mine from university in Armidale, Australia and he was nominated by a friend to do the 25 push-ups for 25 days challenge to raise awareness for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety, and depression that drive people to complete suicide.
You may like to refer to the following paper Benny found on "Prevention and early intervention for adults with mild to moderate depression". https://www.beyondblue.org.au/%E2%80%A6/mild-moderate-depression-an%E2%80%A6
You also may like to refer to books written by Martin Seligman (an American psychologist who did research on happiness). Two titles are Authentic Happiness and Learned Optimism. We’d like to shout out to Margot McGibbon (nee Morrison) for being one of the most positive people we knew at Uni.
