In the early morning of April 14, 1912, the “unsinkable” Titanic collided with an iceberg, sinking only four days into her maiden journey. The technological advances, the opulence of the voyage, and the crew’s experience could not account for the danger that lurked below the sea’s surface. The failure to notice what lurked beneath the surface and adjust accordingly was devastatingly costly.

Despite educational accomplishments, thriving relationships, flourishing dreams, and technological knowledge, we frequently find ourselves “stuck” in unhealthy patterns and habits that we struggle to change. We often do the things we don’t want to do and fail to do what we should. Despite our attempts to depict a grand exterior, many of us are haunted by grief, unresolved pain, or anger that lingers below the surface.

What we learn, often the hard way is what lies beneath the surface will materialize one way or another.

This series aims to help us identify the THINGS that lurk below the surface and rob us of the abundant life Jesus offers. The Thing Beneath the Thing. Each week of the series, we will cover one of the following topics.

Triggers

Hideouts

Insecurities

Narratives

Grace

*The THING acronym stems from the book “The Thing Beneath the Thing” by Steve Carter
