In Acts 17 - Paul points to the cultural worship of the city to show something deeper and more filling than that cultural worship. This Advent season, we want to look at the origins of some of our celebrations and point to the hope, joy, peace, and love they shadow.

For example, in many cultures, the winter solstice was already a time of worship, feasting, and longing. Thousands of years ago, a peasant baby was born on the outskirts of one of history’s most powerful empires. His birth, life, love, death, and resurrection would change the objects of that empire’s worship and the world. Later, some of the traditions and celebrations of the winter solstice become a part of culture’s celebrations of the Christ child.

By looking at the roots of some of these holiday traditions, we’ll see the hope, joy, peace, and love of Christ and how God can meet us in new ways.
