The world remains not ok. Over the years, many have felt like embracing “Merry Christmas” means the need to suspend our realities, doubts, and questions in order to embrace the magic of Christmas. Years like the COVID years (yep, year) make it simply laughable to think we can do so. At best, these attempts leave us with moments of nostalgia and sentimentality, but do nothing to address the real pains we feel.

The good news is that Advent is not an invitation to suspend our pain and vulnerability. More than trying suspend our pain and disbelief in order to experience the magic of Christmas - Advent celebrates a God willing to enter, redeem, and transform our pain.
