This week, Thomas and Colin watch the 1999 American science fiction comedy film, Galaxy Quest.
Thomas is lacking a peel. (A peel is a tool used by bakers to slide loaves of bread, pizzas, pastries, and other baked goods into and out of an oven. It is usually made of wood, with a flat surface for carrying the baked good and a handle extending from one side of that surface.)
Colin made a blog post: https://inspokennotoutspoken.blogspot.com/2024/06/i-had-whole-area-to-myself.html
Thomas dangerously assumes that Colin didn't edit out the needlessly specific disagreement, and thus has edit it back in to make the episode art match the episode.

This week, Thomas and Colin watch the 2023 American comedy-drama film, Asteroid City.

There is society, where none intrudes,

By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:

I love not Man the less, but Nature more,

From these our interviews, in which I steal

From all I may be, or have been before,

To mingle with the Universe, and feel

What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.”

Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage

Thomas is not so keen about a number of things, but they are happy in the end because "happiness only real when shared”

Thomas and Colin start a new Podcast about Euro Truck Simulator 2! It's the price you pay for avoiding any mention of Blaseball. Thomas coughs up a fur ball; he says Gymnopédies, but Colin says Gymnopédies. They both poke out an eye discussing the merits of the 3-D cinema renaissance, and become indecisive about Spielberg.

Thomas has a plague fall upon his house. Colin does maths (for the record, his first answer took 517 milliseconds, and his second answer took 967 milliseconds) and a post-recording fact-check reveals PAL DVDs have a resolution of 720 × 576 pixels, while NTSC DVDs are 720 x 480 pixels. Colin shares controversial feelings towards an entirely different movie, and Thomas disagrees.

The film that Colin and Thomas reviewed previously, that contained similar plot points to this film was Never Let Me Go, the 2010 British dystopian romantic tragedy film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 novel Never Let Me Go. An interesting comparison of themes can be found in this NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/22/movies/MoviesFeatures/duplicates-that-can-beat-the-real-thing.html

A comparison was also the basis of someone's English Senior Honors Thesis at the University of Missouri: https://mospace.umsystem.edu/xmlui/handle/10355/35182

Thomas and Colin wax nostalgic over a film that came out when Colin was many years younger than Thomas is now! Colin goes off on tangents, as can be seen below, whilst Thomas maintains a sheet of spreads.

Music video link Blancmange - Lose Your Love https://youtu.be/GnwyCFQXF50

It was directed by Polish filmmaker, director, cinematographer, screenwriter, creator of experimental animated films, and multimedia artist, Zbigniew Rybczyński. His Wikipedia page makes for fascinating reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbigniew_Rybczy%C5%84ski

Rybczyński has won numerous prestigious awards at international film festivals including Oberhausen (1981), Tampere (1982), Kraków (1981), and the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival (1993). He won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1983 for his film Tango was the first-ever Oscar awarded to a Polish artist. (The awards ceremony was notable for Rybczyński, as after he left the ceremony to step outside for a smoke, he was barred entry by a security guard even though he was holding an Oscar statuette. A scuffle ensued, and Rybczyński was arrested. His summation of the event was that "success and failure are quite intertwined.")

WARNING: Listener discretion advised, due to Adult Themes

Colin may or may not be completely unsure of the Australian differentiation between a "truck" and a "lorry", but he knows what the diff is: its that bulbous thing in the middle of an axle which contain specialised gears that allow the wheels connected either side of that axle to turn at different speeds. When you turn a corner, the outside wheel needs to turn faster than the inside one as it has a greater distance to cover. So the diff is very clever!

Thomas apologises for causing aural irritation, and Colin sells segments of the Podcast for NFTs.

21AA Revocation of classification of films containing additional content

The Board must revoke the classification of a film that has been classified taking into account an assessment prepared by an additional content assessor under subsection 14(5) if it is satisfied that:

(a) the additional content contains any classifiable elements that:

(i) were not brought to the Board’s attention in accordance with paragraph 14(6)(a), (b) or (c) before the classification was made; or

(ii) were brought to the Board’s attention in accordance with paragraph 14(6)(a), (b) or (c) before the classification was made but the assessment of the elements was misleading, incorrect or grossly inadequate; and

(b) if the Board had been aware of the matters mentioned in subparagraph (a)(i) or (ii) before the classification was made, it would have given the film a different classification.

Note: The regulations may prescribe circumstances in which an assessment is taken to be misleading, incorrect or grossly inadequate: see subsection 93(2).
