There are at most a dozen smart robots available that can use invisible lasers to quickly figure out the layout of any house. Then they clean specific rooms or sections on their own and take care of everything else. It’s an amazing and versatile system if you like to fiddle with maps on a smartphone app.
These laser-navigation devices have many similar features, designs and behavior, so there isn’t any evidence suggesting that they are better or more reliable. We recommend the Roborock S4 Max, which is often the lowest-priced model of its kind (it can often be found in the middle of $3000-$300), as it offers the most advanced app and has the best set of controls. Roborocks, and others like them, aren’t likely to last as long. Their single-brush designs also make it difficult to clean rugs. The Roomba i3 is a simpler robot that can be controlled with an app. It’s less intimidating and more efficient, but it cleans well.
Reliable, repairable, and good on rugs
This reliable robot vacuum cleaner is more durable than comparable bots made by other manufacturers and it is also better at cleaning rugs. Although it is a quick navigator, it rarely becomes stuck and can only clean one room at a given time.

This robot vacuum, which is affordable and easily fits under most furniture we’ve tried, is quieter. While it works best in small spaces, it rarely gets stuck and does a good job on bare floors and short-pile rugs. The Roomba 694 is more reliable, but it’s less durable.

Robots that are less expensive usually come with semi-random navigation system. These robots are known as bump-and-run or “bump and run” bots. Although it is perfectly okay to tidy three to four rooms (or more, if you have patience), some find the chaotic aimlessness irritating and doesn’t work consistently in larger areas. We actually recommended the semi-random style for most people up until fall 2021, but it became clear from analyzing user reviews that the zeitgeist has shifted. Most robot buyers expect that their robot will look intelligent and not just bumble along, bumping into objects. But we still think bump-and-run bots have a place, so we’ve shuffled our favorites to budget pick status.
Roomba 600 Series is the first model we recommend. This is a sturdier robot than any bump-and-run model from any other brand, which in our opinion more than offsets the Roomba’s slightly higher sticker price. The Roomba 600 series is also a stronger cleaner than other brands’ low-end robots, especially on rugs, thanks to the dual-brush and dirt-detection systems. The Roomba 694 is the most current model with Wi-Fi (for on-off remote control through a smartphone app), but you sometimes might be able to find a more basic model without Wi-Fi. Any of these models are fair deals for less than $250. A $200 price tag is excellent.
Also consider the Eufy RoboVac 11S , which is so quiet and nimble that it blends into the background like no other robot (apart from the dozen or so clones from Eufy itself and other brands). The basic and affordable robot sounds more like a fan than a vacuum. Even though you are home, it will barely be noticeable that it is running. The 11S is shorter than other bots which allows it to glide underneath more furniture and pick up more debris. Unfortunately, the 11S and other similar bots don’t appear to have the durability to last more than two years. We’ve also heard of many unrepairable failures even earlier. While the 11S is able to clean floors far better than regular vacuuming, it’s not built to extract much soil from rugs. The 11S, like the Roomba 600 series and most bots within this price range, is semi-randomly navigator. It works best when working in tight spaces.

This tried-and-true robot vacuum is much more durable and repairable than similar bots from other brands and is better at cleaning rugs, too. The robot vacuum is very agile and will not get stuck. However, it can clean only a small number of rooms at once.

Affordable
This robot vacuum, which is affordable and easily fits under most furniture we’ve tried, is much quieter. It works well in tight spaces but it is not able to get stuck. Though it has a longer life span than the Roomba 694.
Are Robot Vacuums Worth It?
It’s worth investing in a robot vacuum if your time is limited or you have a pet that sheds. A robot vacuum can be a great investment for pet owners.
You will need to give some input when using a robot vacuum. More advanced models require you to set up a map and define the zones of your house you’ll want them to clean or stay away from, and even the best vacuum can get stuck and need human intervention.
The robot vacuums won’t be able replace an upright, stick or canister vacuum. However, robot vacuums don’t have the right tools to take care household accidents or clean heavily-soiled areas.
Even the most advanced models can’t get into every crevice and hard-to-reach space, and they can’t vacuum upholstery, drapes, closets, drawers and kitchen cabinets, or anything else that isn’t a horizontal surface.
They are a great investment to help you avoid dirt and dust buildup.
You should consider the layout and type of flooring in your home. A robot vacuum requires a lot more input if you have a Victorian home with medium-to high-pile carpeting. The robot vacuum works well in modern homes that have hardwood and tile floors. The first thing you need to do is decide how much time you will spend prepping your home for the vacuum.
If you don’t mind picking up toys and lamp cords and anything else that might get in the way or get snarled in the roller brush, then you can get one of the more affordable robot vacuums. These robots, like our budget recommendation the Eufy 11s run in a random, “bump & run” mode and lack smart mapping. This means they will clean your entire home for an extended period of time, instead of moving from one room to the next.
Just because you aren’t spending much money on a smart system doesn’t guarantee you will have a tidy house. We found that some units clean as well as higher-priced models can be just as effective in cleaning as the more expensive ones.
If you’re not willing to devote the time to prepping the house, then opt for the LiDAR-enabled, connected robot vacuums like our overall recommendation, the iRobot Roomba j7+ that are smart enough to detect and steer clear of obstacles. It will be easier to declutter each vacuum run by spending the extra time in the setup.
Although these models are more expensive, you can set schedules, assign rooms and use voice assistants like Alexa to control your vacuum.

Another benefit is the Very Good rating that iRobot’s robotic vacuums get for owner satisfaction and predicted reliability.
IRobot Roomba
CR’s review: The Roomba I7+ is the best-selling model. It cleans floors fast, moves quickly, and collects a lot of dirt in one pass. It will automatically empty all its items into the dock when it returns to home. This allows it to run longer cycles than other robotic vacuums without you having to manually empty them. Smart technology means that you can use your smartphone to start cleaning or voice command Google Assistant or Alexa. However, our test subjects said that pet hair must be removed manually from the brush.
This vacuum has been a strong performer in CR-tests, passing both our pet hair and naked floor tests with excellent scores. It uses smart-mapping technology to map and adjust to cleaning areas. And iRobot says it will replace the vacuum if, within a year of purchase, it should fail to avoid pet waste. Navigation is top-notch and this vacuum easily slides under and around furniture. Roomba j7 was the only iRobot that did not earn an excellent score for data security. Like all of its competitors, the Roomba j7 earns an average Good rating in terms of data privacy.

Each Roborock vacuum was tested from the E20 down to the S6 MaxV. Over the years, their navigation abilities have consistently improved, and the app has gotten cleaner and easier to use. We recommend a middle-range Roborock like S4 Max which is currently being tested to give you the best value.
Wi-Fi-enabled S4 Max is equipped with many features that are not available in higher end robot vacuums. This robot vacuum doesn’t get tripped over on my kitchen counter. Additionally, it has an incredible three hour battery life. The dust bin is also slightly larger than average.
Are you looking to upgrade? Roborock just introduced the S7 recently, but it doesn’t seem to justify the extra cost. S7 comes with a multidirectional rubber rolling that’s not nearly as effective at picking up dirt from low-pile carpet. After it has finished, I need to continue following the brush around in order to pick up any smallish dog hair clumps.
