What We Did to Test The Upright Vacuum
We tested 28 vacuums in The Lab in Industry City, Brooklyn, during our 16-hour vacuum test eight of which were upright vacuums. First, we opened the boxes and began to take notes regarding the product’s setup. We also took note of the clearness of the manual. Next we tested their effectiveness on hardwood flooring and three types carpeted floors. We spilled measured amounts of hair, popcorn kernels, and Cheerios on the surfaces, and noted how many passes were needed to clean them up. During this testing, we also observed how each vacuum moved.
We then tested their maneuverability with a vacuum by running it through a maze-like obstacle course. This was to see how the vacuums handled tight corners and seamlessly transitioned between carpeting and smooth floors. As a wrapper, we also noted the speed at which each bag/bin could be empty and the level of noise from each pick. At-home product testers rated other upright models on the same attributes after using them in their living spaces. Our editors took all of this consistently applied testing data from at-home testing and lab testing and boiled it down to the seven upright vacuums we believe are the best.

Dyson Ball Animal2 Upright Vacuum Dyson vacuums have the reputation as engineering wonders, powerful and ergonomically-designed products. The Ball Animal 2 is a great vacuum. This heavy-duty vacuum can catch everything, including food scraps and tufts cat fur in just one pass. The vacuum has a huge (and conveniently clear) dirt container, so you can go a while without having to empty it. Despite what I think is consistent vacuuming in the past, the Dyson unearthed layers of dust and crumbs that had been buried in my thick living-room rug for months if not longer. It did get stuck to the rug, pulling on the rug, which was a problem. I would not recommend this vacuum for daily cleanings but it is worth it for monthly deep cleanings. It glides effortlessly on hardwood floors and suckers up all the crumbs it encounters.
As I used handheld and stick vacuums in the past I was annoyed that this vacuum wasn’t cordless. It also comes with an extremely long cord. It only required me to plug it in to two outlets for my whole apartment. It was more difficult to move the vacuum than I have in the past. The vacuum is heavier than other vacuums I have used and it doesn’t turn or swivel around corners as well. The Ball Animal 2 seems too big for my small apartment. When I first tried a stick vacuum (the Eureka Stylus), I stopped reaching for my Dyson because it was too heavy and hard to maneuver. That being said, if you can afford it, and need something that’ll get your place seriously clean, this is probably one of your best options. K.I.A.
