The United States Postal Service is hard at work every day in order to deliver millions upon millions of postal pieces to every address in the U.S.
Sometimes, however, carriers are forced to return packages to the Post Office because they weren’t delivered due to weather conditions or lack of signature.
If you can’t get down to the Post Office right away, you might wonder: How long does USPS hold packages? Here’s the link to my answer.
The USPS Will Hold Your Packages For How Long In 2022
The United States Postal Service can hold mail for 15 days following delivery attempt. This applies to the majority of its mailing services. The USPS issues two notices in each instance. All packages will be returned to their sender once they have been received after 15 days.
What can you do to find out if your package is held by the USPS?
Your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts to deliver a package but is unable, they will leave a peach-colored PS Form 3849. If your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts delivery of a package, but is unable to do so, the carrier will leave you a yellow-colored PS Form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
In my experience, the postal carrier will try and leave the note right at the top of the pile so that it’s visible and not hidden among envelopes (and potentially tossed).
However, what happens if your parcel is misplaced? You might even see the parcel and forget to retrieve it.
Don’t worry! The Post Office will issue a Final and Second Notice generally within three to five business days of the initial delivery attempt.
It’s the same PS Form 3849, however there is a box at the bottom left corner that reads “Final Notice”; if checked, that means that the time to pick up the parcel is nearing.
There is also a space where the postal carrier can enter the date that the holding period is over and the parcel will be sent back to the return address.
However, there is an exception to the 15 day holding policy: Priority Mail Express items can only be held for five working days. The Second/Final notices are given after three business days.
How do you find the location of your USPS packages?
If there’s only one Post Office in your area, you will likely be able to find the exact address to pick up mail.
If you have moved to a nearby location with multiple post offices, it might be difficult for you to find the right one.
According to USPS.com, you can learn this information in one of two ways.
The USPS Tracking Page for your parcel will show you the destination once your tracking information has been updated.
If this isn’t convenient, please dial 1-800-ASK USPS (1 800 275-8777) to talk to a customer care representative.
How do I pick up the USPS Packet?
The process of picking up your USPS parcel that has been held is very simple.
You will need to have your PS Form 384 and a valid photo ID. For some persons, this may be a driver’s licence; for others, it could be a passport, or an ID card.
Your Form may not be signed yet. They will ask that you complete it at the counter. After they verify the ID, your names and signatures are in order.
Is it possible for someone else to pick up your package from the Post Office?
You can authorize someone else to pick up your package that is being held at the Post Office.
But, on the PS Form 3829 you’ll need to type something similar to:
(Name of retriever has my permission) to collect mail from (Your Name).
When you are done, add your signature to the little note.
How long does USPS keep packages in a PO box for?
A notification is sent by the Post Office to let you know that you can pick up a parcel at the Front Counter if the item doesn’t fit into your PO Box.
In the majority of cases they will retain that package for the required 15 days. This depends on the service used to ship the item. It is just like regular package holds.
What happens to a package that you haven’t picked up from the Post Office yet?
USPS will attempt to return the package to its sender after the hold period has expired.
Sometimes though, it’s impossible to return because the return address has changed or isn’t legible.
Mail can sometimes be sent to these areas, and it may end up in the Dead Mail section. There, some postal workers will try to locate missing addresses or illegible addresses, so the package can ultimately get returned.
You have the good news that even though you’ve missed your holding period there are still chances your package will make it to you.
You can’t be certain, and the message could end up on its return route. However, you can do it.
If the package could not be returned to the sender, it may be in a Mail Recovery Center (one is in GA and one is in MN).
Once the package is scanned, it will be kept for 60 more days, or if its value exceeds $25. During this time, you are able to take action.
You will have to fill out a Mail Recovery Center Search Request and include as much information about your parcel as you can.
This especially includes barcode/Tracking info and the packaging size, as well as the contents of the package (in as much detail as you can manage).
Then – you wait! USPS will do its best to locate your package and get it back to you.
The lesson is to not miss the initial 15-day deadline for collecting a package from your Post Office.
You can read our post on USPS delivery times, whether USPS packages are left in the rain or scanned by USPS, as well as information about USPS’s services.
USPS holds most undeliverable packages for 15 days, and notifies recipients twice that they have a parcel being held for pick-up at Post Office.
You will need your PS Form 3849 along with valid identification. Or you may send it to someone else, complete with your signature and permission note.
Why are all my packages delayed 2022
You can update your USPS parcel tracking information if it isn’t updated. This could happen for a variety of reasons, such as bad weather conditions, busy purchasing season, or missorted packages.
Why are the Usps’s 2022 updates not being updated?
USPS tracking numbers might not get updated due to inclement weather or incorrect delivery.
