We're back with another Rabbit Chat with special guests Callene and Eric Rapp. They're the owner-operators of The Rare Hare Barn, LLC, the largest heritage-breed meat-rabbit enterprise in the U.S. (www.rareharebarn.com). Over the course of their operation, they have provided rabbit fryers to 50 different restaurants all over the country, and currently raise American Chinchilla and American Blue and White rabbits, selling breeding stock across the U.S. and Canada.
They have over 50 years of combined experience handling nearly every species of domestic livestock. They currently also raise Pineywoods cattle and Arapawa goats, and Callene serves as registrar for the Arapawa Goat Breeders Association. Both Eric and Callene have served on the Board of Directors for the Livestock Conservancy, and Callene served as Board Chair. Callene has written numerous articles about livestock husbandry for Grit magazine, and in 2018 the couple wrote “Raising Rabbits for Meat” and “Homestead Cattle, the Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Cows” due out in June.
