We’ve got a complicated relationship with control. On one hand, we often try to control things too much.

Whether it’s counting carb grams or calories, tracking exercise hours in a spreadsheet, demanding our special kibble like a fancy pedigreed poodle, or showing up to every social occasion with our own Tupperware, many of us like to cover every dietary uncertainty or adhere to every “rule”, in the service of health or body composition.

On the other hand, we may feel like many things are out of our control. Or out of control in general....

What do we consider a priority is the fundamental question isn’t it? Don’t “have time” to work out, really? Let’s look deeper…

Try this simple eye-opener exercise to learn what your true priorities are: Take the following statement about anything, such as a workout. Instead of saying: "I don't have time"

and replace it with:

"It's not important to me" Whoa...

You might think that going to the gym makes up for the 8-12 hours you spend sitting at your desk every day. You don’t have to take the stairs or leave your house to pick up dinner rather than ordering in because you’ve already spent an hour on the treadmill.

You probably don’t realize that the calories burned with the accumulation of all of those small activities would significantly outdo the calories you burned on the treadmill.

According to Dr. James Levine, the Mayo Clinic researcher who first described the phenomenon of NEAT (NonExerciseActivityThermogenesis), it can vary by up to 2,000 calories a day between two people of the same size.

Some experts tell you to count calories or meticulously measure every macro. Others encourage you to estimate portions. Still, others want you

to “listen to your body.” Sometimes it seems like the entire health and fitness industry is divided. But guess what? Calorie counting works.

And a huge body of evidence from the past 20 years definitively shows that consuming more produce can help prevent a wide range of health problems, including diabetes, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer.

If you sleep 5 or 6 hours when you really need 7 or 8, you keep your body in a chronically sleep-deprived state, impairing your body’s ability to regulate several key hormones.

When you hear about a dramatic transformation (like someone losing 100 pounds) or completing a marathon, the only thing you know is the event that people are talking about, the end result, the cheering moment! You don't hear anything about the process that came before it, or about the habits that led to the eventual result. Wait; effort, hard work, sacrifice, sweat, what?

Confidence is the fruit of consistency, I believe that completely. Confidence is also the ability to forget past failures and mistakes, and to forge a loss into a learn, as you keep moving forward. So, in that sense, I look at “ignorance” as a success skill in letting go of the mental baggage of regrets.
