In 1787, dozens of men, including George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, gathered in Philadelphia to design a new system of government for the United States, then barely four years old with a weak central government that was struggling to respond to the nation’s problems. I found it odd that only 9% of people say they are superstitious about the number 13. Companies go a long way to avoid 13 for only 9% of the population. Consider how many office buildings don’t have “13th” floor. I’m thinking people weren’t completely honest in the Gallup poll.

And though it is true that we sometimes associate and attribute our behavior with our identities, it’s not really the case. After all, if you change some of your behavior, aren’t you still the same person? Just because you choose to act in a different way, that doesn’t mean you’re not yourself.

There are lots of behaviors that make almost everyone feel uncomfortable, including dumping our complaints on others, acting needy and clingy, bragging about ourselves, being defensive and argumentative, being overly critical and judgmental of other people, and many more.

Christians are under no obligation to fulfill the command to tithe as given to the Israelites as part of the Mosaic Law. The tithe was a requirement of the Law in which all Israelites were to give 10 percent of everything they earned and grew to the tabernacle/temple

We are to offer much more to God than our monetary resources. Romans 12:1 exhorts us to offer our bodies “as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God” as part of our worship. Romans 6:13 gives the reason for offering ourselves: because we are “those who have been brought from death to life,” and, as such, we are to “offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.” God is not nearly as interested in our monetary offerings as He is in our submission and obedience. There is another side to this issue that needs to be addressed. I have heard many Americans describe gun ownership as a God-given right. Some of them will point to Luke 22:36, in which Jesus instructed the disciples to buy swords. Jesus’ instructions were for a specific purpose at a specific time. To say that His words give human beings the right to own any sort of weapon at any time for any reason is a serious stretch, to say the least. No, gun ownership is not a God-given right. The extreme hostility from some gun owners to any attempt by the government to limit gun ownership or restrict what types of guns can be purchased is not biblical. Reasonable proposals that attempt to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from acquiring guns should be seriously considered.

Too many others are feeling the same thing. I’ve always said to people, “Walk around flawed people and get to Jesus. He will not disappoint and His love will make up for human failure.” But be sure to forgive as we all need forgiveness.

I hope you won’t give up on the church. Pray for your church if it lacks community. Perhaps you do need to try and find another church. But prayer is powerful in changing things. Talking with reasonable people in the congregation who may agree with you is also a possibility. Perhaps together you can bring change.

Approximately 4.6 billion years ago, our solar system was just a cloud of dust and gas known as a solar nebula. Gravity collapsed the material in on itself as it began to spin, condensing the matter and forming the sun in the center of the nebula.

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul addressed an entirely different set of problems.

Couple that with sexual immoralities, and a case of incest; mix that with church members suing one another; confusion about the use of spiritual gifts; pigging out over the Lord’s Table, stir all that up together and you have a tee-total mess on your hand.

The only perfect one is Jesus. And since that’s true, the very best you can do is to raise up both your hands and say, ‘Thank God for His mercy endures forever.’

First, you must acknowledge the hurt and/or hate you have toward the person(s). If your forgiveness doesn’t visit the emotional core of the offense, it will be incomplete. Let God bring it to the surface so He can deal with it. This is where healing takes place.

If the Lord brings a name or face to mind and you don’t know why. Write it down anyway. Holy Spirit knows things we don’t remember and event he things we would consider insignificant, but carry more weight than we understand. He will bring the reason as you move through the process. Trust Him!

10) Avoid The Person Who Is Two Faced If You Can. If you can avoid the two faced person who has been talking negatively about you, you should. This is not always possible, especially if the person in question is a family member or coworker. If you have to spend time around that person, set clear boundaries regarding what kind of topics you are willing to talk about or listen to. If the two-faced individual tries to gossip about other people, politely tell them that kind of talk doesn’t interest you. Do not offer any opinions of your own unless you want to hear your opinions twisted around later.

Be consistent. If you have certain time schedules for your services, make sure you keep them. I never canceled a service for fear that someone who had been thinking about visiting our church might come and find it closed. You could potentially lose a good member or family who was serious about being a part of your church.

Pursue excellence. Paul wrote, “That you may approve things that are excellent” (Philippians 1:10). We must be the best we can in all we do. We must be professional in appearance, preaching, teaching, and in conducting the service. Think about what you see when attending a small church compared to a large one. You wouldn’t expect to visit a large church and see the order of service, worship, timeliness, etc. conducted in a haphazard manner. If a small church wants to grow it should do no less.

But the danger is that this worldview can also be hijacked by anyone who wants to say, “Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?”

The obvious caveat is that Trump isn’t God. Still, too many of his supporters act as though he is, even if they explain that he is but an instrument of the Lord.

We should also avoid the temptation to cherry-pick scripture (or prophecy) that contradicts the spirit of the rest of the scriptures.

I believe that it’s possible God can still speak to us, either audibly, or by virtue of a “still small voice.” But I also believe the verse that tells us to “believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

it would be great if doing business with those closest to us was a risk-free, rewarding pleasure. Certainly sometimes it works out fine, but often times it doesn't. As with many things in business, it is helpful to try to anticipate the worst-case scenario (a mildly ticked-off acquaintance, personal embarrassment, a relative who never talks to you again), and consider the reasoning, benefits and alternatives. Decide if it's a risk worth taking, and if you can live with the possible consequences.

Others haven't found a place of worship they like, they struggle with a lack of time, they don't like the sermons, or the church leaders or they have been hurt by the church community before.

Most of these reasons are about the person and not about God. Yet life as a Christian is all about obeying the Lord’s instructions. Unless you’re in poor health, going to church is important for the Christian life.

God’s will is for us to gather with others and worship him. Any church building doesn't automatically qualify as a church just because there are lots of people inside.

At recent pastors conferences where I have spoken, only 15 people out of 1,000 raised their hands when asked if they were paid enough by their church to take care of their family’s financial needs without any extra income.

You may also consider speaking with a mental health professional who can help you address unhealthy thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Rather than blaming others for your mistakes, you can take responsibility even if it’s uncomfortable. Everyone makes mistakes, and passing the blame can make you look worse than if you admitted your fault.
