There are more than 1.5 million species of insects on our planet. They pollinate fruits, flowers, and vegetables, and produce honey, beeswax, and silk. Insects are the only food source for many amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Humans in many parts of the world eat insects, which are a rich source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Some people reach for a can of bug spray or scream when they see insects scurrying about, but not our guest entomologist Lynn Kimsey, the director of the UC Davis Bohart Entomology Museum. Our place of the week is Madagascar, home to the hissing cockroach, upside down trees, bizarre karst limestone formations, amazing biodiversity, and rare and endengered species of lemurs.
