Episode 25. The main reason why we have communication problems and the answer to improving our listening or speaking skills.
We usually try and fix communication problems from a symptomatic approach. We think we need a class to learn how to present better or we think we're not natural with words because of our introverted personality.
While some of these solutions can resolve issues, they can only work effectively when we understand the fundamental reason why we listen or speak ineffectively. And it has to do with emotional health.
Most communication problems come from emotional problems. When we lack the ability to recognise (consciously) and manage our emotions healthily, communication problems especially in our relationships arise.
And to break it down further, emotional health problems stem from two factors - worrying about other people's opinions or constantly judging others. Weird?
These two factors are a mirror effect of each others. When we spend too much in someone else's head - by thinking about what they think of us or by drawing conclusions about how someone behaves - we aren't spending time in our head.
And we need to spend time in our own head so that we can actually improve our emotional well-being to improve how we communicate in all our relationships.
