We are not meant to give 100% of the time. But we can give to our full potential. And that means we can give a lot more by not giving 100% of our time away.
Selfishness is misunderstood today. And we're trying to correct our view of it through advocating self-care and making it less of a "bad" word. Yet, we still don't get it. Why is that?
We often go around judging others as selfish from a misinformed definition of it. We think lack of thoughtfulness or consideration makes people unkind and indeed, selfish. And when we don't find ourselves considering everyone in our life, we feel guilty.
Then, the guilt doesn't lead to any sort of appropriate self-care. But there's a caveat (always). When you don't consciously make a decision to practice self-care you will inevitably be selfish in some aspect of your life unconsciously.
And that's the crux of selfishness. We end up "being selfish" when we don't practice self-care. And then not reach our full potential of giving and contribution in this world.
