19th training session in the gym. It was short-lived. Did the warm-up, could tell my back was still tender. Told my trainer right away that I wanted to make sure I was warm and ease into things. We took a little extra time. The first movement I did was a max height jump. I did a few warm up jumps. Then we actually were going to do it with a weighted vest. I did three jumps with a weighted vest. On the third jump, jumping as high as I could, going off of two feet toward the rim, when I landed I could tell that my back didn't spasm, but didn't feel good. I looked at my trainer and said I'm not comfortable going at this intensity. We restructured today to do a very active, specific recovery around getting my glutes firing. Making sure I'm not flaring up my lower back or trying to do movements where I wasn't comfortable. Gave me homework for the next week. With Friday being a holiday for New Years, I won't be in the gym. Next week Monday I might be out of town, so not going to have that day in the gym. I'll have a full week here to target recovery. I feel like I've pushed pretty hard and grown. I can tell my strength is coming, but I don't want to lose the ability to be limber. With my back I don't want to mess around with it. It was painful enough today where after I was done, 2 hours it set in, I was struggling to bend over and take off my shoes. Just simple stuff. To me that's a signal. It's a healthy signal for the body to communicate that. I want to honor the fact if I'm not ready I have the advantage of not being forced into competition. Going to enjoy 2020 sitting on my butt tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll check in. Want to flip the script here and dive more into things outside of the gym. I think this week will be a great example. What do you do when physically you may not be able to train? But you still want to progress and add to the progress throughout the course of trying to dunk a basketball.
