The emperor Trajan died later in the year and was succeeded by Hadrian and the rebellion in Judea was finally crushed by Quietus. Quietus was murdered later in the year (AD 118) and it has been theorized that Quietus was assassinated on the orders of the new emperor, Hadrian, for fear of Quietus' popular standing with the army and his close connections to Trajan.

Sukkah 21
Reason for R. Yehuda:
A. Intention in creating a tent:
Bed is not an ohel (not intended to protect under the bed)
Natural cave is not an ohel (no intention at all)
Challenge from child on the door on the ox
If fist size then its an ohel even w/o intention
Bed is fist size?
Ox’s is primarily to protect its innards. Bed is primarily for above.
Manmade tent – 1 handbreadth
Natural cave – if larger than fist
Manmade support for above – not a tent
B. Bed is a temporary tent and so nullified inside a permanent structure

No – both Tannaim say cutting is making
No – both Tannaim say must shake
Sponsored by Muriel and Alexander Seligson
Sukka 8
Rabbi Yohanan – round sukkah requires circumfrence for 24 people (follows Rabbi of 4x4 minimum)
1) 1 person per amah
12 is sufficient if we equate side = a circle inside a 4x4 square
16 is sufficient if we equate perimiters
16.8 is needed if we equate hypotenus & diameter = for a 4x4 square inside a circle (3 x 1.4 x 4)
2) 2/3 person per amah = 16
16.8 is needed
3) 1 person per amah but people sitting on outside = 18 amot for a diamater of 6
16.8 is needed and he rounded up
4) Judges of Caesarea
Circle in a square is ratio of 3/4 circle is 3a, square 4a
Square in a circle is a ratio of 1/1.5 square is 4a, circle is 1.4a x 3 = 4.2s
BUT AREA WORKS! square a2, circle is 3(.7a)2 = 1.5a2

Tosefta
There was already a case of a certain Boethusian who burnt (the incense) while he was still outside, and the cloud of the incense emerged and shook the whole building…
When he emerged he said to his father: all your days you would expound (scripture) but you wouldn’t execute (it), until I arose and executed (it).He said to him: Even though we expound we do not execute (it), we obey the words of the Rabbis. I wonder if you shall live long? Not three days passed and they placed him in his grave.
Bavli Berakhot 61b
…When R. Akiva was taken out for execution, it was the hour for the recital of the ‘Shema’, and they were combing his flesh with an iron comb, and he was accepting upon himself the kingship of heaven with love. His disciples said to him: Our teacher, even to this point?
He said to them: All my days I have been troubled over this verse, ‘with all thy soul’, [which I interpret,] ‘even if He takes thy soul’, and I said: When shall I have the opportunity of fulfilling this? Now that I have the opportunity shall I not fulfill it?
And he did not have a chance to complete it (ha-davar) until his soul left his body while reciting the word ‘Ehad’.

Josephus Antiquities, 20:9:4
And now Jesus, the son of Gamaliel, became the successor of Jesus, the son of Damneus, in the high priesthood, which the king had taken from the other; on which account a sedition arose between the high priests, with regard to one another; for they got together bodies of the boldest sort of the people, and frequently came, from reproaches, to throwing of stones at each other.

How big is a revi’it?
Rav Hisda’s thesis:
Reviit log = 2 x 2 x 2.7 fingerbreadths = 10.8 cubic fingerbreadths
Proof from Baraita:
40 seah = 3 cubic amot
1 Seah = 6 kav = 24 log = 96 revi’it log volume measurements
40 seah = 3840 revi’it log
1 Amah = 6 tefah = 24 fingerbreadths distance measurements
3 cubit amot = 3 x 243fingerbreadths = 41,472 cubic fingerbreadths

B. Benefit from Idolatry, Forbidden Relations, and Murder
C. Abaye vs Rava – Deriving Benefit when no choice or unintended
Pesahim 24 – Four More Sources for Prohibiting Benefit
A. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi – inedible sin-offering
But no sin offering may be eaten from which any blood is brought into the Tent of Meeting for expiation in the sanctuary; any such shall be consumed in fire.
Then Moses inquired about the goat of sin offering, and it had already been burned! He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and said,
“Why did you not eat the sin offering in the sacred area? For it is most holy, and He has given it to you to remove the guilt of the community and to make expiation for them before the LORD.
Since its blood was not brought inside the sanctuary, you should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.”
B. Rabbi Yonatan – leftover meat
And if any of the flesh of ordination, or any of the bread, is left until morning, you shall put what is left to the fire; it shall not be eaten, for it is holy.
C. Abaye – A again
From “do not eat” in Vayikra 6:23
But that could just add punishable prohibition against eating
D. Rav Papa – impure meat
Flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten; it shall be consumed in fire. As for other flesh, only he who is clean may eat such flesh.

· Rabbi Yehuda – liquids transmit to vessels and food
Rabbi Yehuda retracted – fully or still say transmit to food?
Attempted proof from Parah of full retraction
Rabbi Yose’s proof
Rabbi Akiva learned from יטמא (v. 33) that food -> shelishi to food
So too Rabbi Yose – יטמא (v. 34b) liquid -> food
34a and 34b apply food->liquid and liquid->food
But maybe verse teaches liquid -> vessels?
Even vessels don’t -> vessels
יטמא (v. 34a) – food -> liquid

No, liquids are just susceptible

Yose ben Yoezer – Temple liquids are tahor
· Rav – liquids are pure.
· Shmuel – liquids can be tameh deoraita but not transmit
[Rav is consistent: oil and wine can become tameh, both cases of Haggai]
If (B) Levi (all liquids pure) follows (C) Shmuel (just can’t transmit) then Haggai 2 is “or”
[Haggai 1 is “and then” and so tahor following (A) Shmuel, even sheni]
If (B) Levi follows (C) Rav (pure) no possibility for Haggai 2
If (A) Shmuel (Haggai 1 tahor) follows (B) Rav (blood and water only) then ok Haggai 1 is hamishi, Haggai 2 is less
If (A) Shmuel (Haggai 1 tahor) follows (B) Levi (all liquids pure) then no need to explain Haggai 1 as hamishi since always tahor past 1

On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
Thus said the LORD of Hosts: Seek a ruling from the priests, as follows:
If a man is carrying sacrificial flesh in a fold of his garment, and with that fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, will the latter become holy? In reply, the priests said, “No.”
Haggai went on, “If someone defiled by a corpse touches any of these, will it be defiled?” And the priests responded, “Yes.”
Thereupon Haggai said: That is how this people and that is how this nation looks to Me—declares the LORD—and so, too, the work of their hands: Whatever they offer there is defiled.

If one finds vessels with a drawing upon it of the sun, or a drawing of the moon, or a drawing of a dragon, he should bring them to the Salt Sea [to dispose of them there]. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: Those upon those [vessels] which are treated with honor are forbidden; those upon those [vessels] treated disrespectfully are permitted. Rabbi Yose says: One should grind [the vessel with the drawing] and disperse it to the wind or cast it into the sea. They [the Sages] said to him: Even that might become fertilizer, as it is said (Devarim 13:18): "And let nothing of the condemned cling to your hand."
