From motivation to inspirationHow you motivate someone depends on thesomeone. If the person is in desperation eitherfinancially, emotionally or in their relationship, the idea of motivating them with anything butrules, regulations and laws is foolhardy. Youare far wiser to acknowledge where a personis at in their life before you consider how tomotivate them.Generically, you motivate people by givingthem the impression that something good willhappen if they do what you ask. Of course, aperson in desperation might not even believethat so, you motivate them by saying some-thing bad won’t happen if they do what youask. This is a very primal level of motivation.More sophisticated levels of motivation can beachieved if the individuals in question believethey have some choice. In other words they arenot working out of fear or desperation. Thesemore conscious people would react badly tothe lower levels of motivation and are morelikely to be “turned on” by values. That meansthey would become highly invested in what-ever they were doing as long as they thoughttheir values were being met. Like goodness tohumanity, kindness to children, ethical prod-ucts, environmental legitimacy. This is still fairly primal, and requires signifi-cant structure in a company. The individualsin this circumstance would be motivated.
