Times have changed and people have fallen away from God, but just as the Jews began rereading God's Word so should we. God's Word must be given central attention once again. As we consider the road to revival in our lives and churches - we must understand our need to acknowledge the gravity of our sins and confess those sins to the Lord... Today, we look at the conditions of many homes and families, we would have to admit that many are in a real mess - most often the root problem is that we have strayed so far away from God's Word that we feel it is to hard to get back. We will look to the Word of God and offer Biblical hope for our homes to be more like God made it to be. (Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV)

What would you guess the most common command in Scripture is? Most would say something about love, purity, pride...but how many would say something about fear? The single command most given in Scripture is "Fear Not". In face, "Fear Not" appears in the Bible 366 times (that is one for everyday, including leap year!) Today's message is about finding Hope for the fearful. (Matthew 14:22-33)

Many today are happily married, been married for a long time and have a blessed marriage. But, in todays culture, marriage is clearly under attack. For instance, consider the American divorce rate... 41% of first marriages, 60% of 2nd marriages and 73% of third marriages end in divorce. But God has other plans for our marriages... These are some difficult days for so many people - young people, Seniors in high school, shut-ins who can't have visitors, and the list goes on. Today, we want to offer some hope for the depressed. This is the most important day for Christians - the day our sin debt was paid - paid in full by our Lord who came to save sinners. Scriptures tell us that after the last supper, they sang & went to the Mount of Olives (in the Garden of Gethsemane), where Jesus prayed with great fervency about what was to come, all while at the same time Judas was leading a group to Jesus where he would then betray Him. By this time, most of the gaps in the wall around Jerusalem have been filled in. But, just when the work seemed finished....the opposition tries a few last ditch efforts to stop the work....just as we have an enemy who continually tries to come against us in the church. (Nehemiah 6:1-16)

Things have changed a lot in the church. There were the days when the church could just open their doors and people were going to come...not anymore. In the past we did not have to defend our faith but as Christians we have to now. Students are going to schools/ colleges where teachers/professors are regularly questioning faith, ridiculing their religious convictions... We have to be more intentional... we don't change the message -the Word is unchanging and Perfect - but our methodologies must change. Sometimes circumstances change and a new strategy is required. Important thing is that we keep with the task God has set before us.

We live in difficult times. Many people are discouraged, depressed and just plain exhausted. And in those times, the most spiritual thing we can do is rest...just as Elijah did in 1 Kings 19, and with his rest we can see improvements.
When it comes to discouragement - two negatives never make a positive and we know that we must work together for good (Romans 8:28)
So look for the good that is going to come out of your circumstances...
Is God preparing you to help someone else?
Is this going to make you a better pastor, friend, teacher, spouse, parent?
Is God equipping you for greater responsibility?
What are you learning thru this process?
How can God use it for good? (Nehemiah 4:1-9)

In today's world so many are looking for the next best thing, the best thing they can get right now in the easiest way possible with the least amount of effort. But if we look into the Bible we can see that God wants us to be the total opposite of this...He wants us to show patience...scriptures are full of exhortations about patience (Isaiah 40:31) ,He wants us to pray...pray without ceasing, walk in communication with God, He encourages planning... (Proverbs 16:3) as prayer and planning go hand in hand. If we all learn that we need to put our trust and faith in God and things happen in his timing, because that is always at the perfect time, then we know that God will show u in a big way and often provides in ways beyond what we ask Him. When we pray if God's will, right motives and wait on Him to answer, we find that what God does is so perfect and so much more.

Jesus spent much time teaching, discipling, leading His disciples. In Luke 9:2 he sends them out to preach and proclaim the Kingdom of God...Along the way, there were others who decided that they also wanted to be followers of Jesus. Very often, Gospel records Jesus teaching multitudes of people, sometimes they just came to see His miracles...but some actually wanted to follow after Christ. Then what we see in Luke 10 is really what Christians are to do: they are to go out and share the good news with others, love and minister to neighbors, worship God. (Luke 15:10 & 10:1-4)

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was probably about 14 years old when we meet her in Scripture. She was a simple Jewish girl living in the village of Nazareth, up in Galilee, the northern part of Israel. Mary had just become engaged to a young carpenter named Joseph. During this year of engagement, Mary and Joseph would never be alone or unescorted for any length of time. One day a top-ranking angel named Gabriel visited Mary. The angel told her that she was to be the mother of the long-awaited Messiah, the son of the living God. Gabriel was asking a lot. A young, unmarried pregnant girl in that day and time risked disaster. She could easily lose her fiancé, her family, her reputation and even her life. Never these, Mary's simple faithful response was "I am the Lord's servant, May it be done to me according to your word." (Luke 1:38)

The prescription for giving set forth by God is by proportion rather than a percentage and God wants us to give out of devotion rather than duty/obligation, because whatever we purpose to give, will never be a billionth of what God has given us. Friends, God has given us a pattern for our giving by His giving of an indescribable gift. The gift of His Son, so you and I might be saved. That is the surpassing, indescribable, most wonderful grace of God...AND... then He offers us this gift of salvation. Spreading God's word to all nations is the goal set for all christians to tell everyone about Christ and how his grace and mercy can save. In this sermon we have examples of ways to spread the word of God's love and how each of us can help just by telling our story to others of hoe Christ saved us.
The focus scripture is Acts 16:6-15
6 They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia; they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 Passing by Mysia they went down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” 10 After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Lydia’s Conversion11 From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, a Roman colony and a leading city of the district of Macedonia. We stayed in that city for several days. 13 On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate by the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and spoke to the women gathered there. 14 A God-fearing woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to respond to what Paul was saying. 15 After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

We all know what it's like to be nervous about what's next, what's going to change, because we feel totally out of control. We all face an unknown future. Some of us are scared to death about it and some of us gladly welcome it. That fear is what lets Satan in and it is the weapon he uses to control our minds. What God does is gives us faith to conqueror the fears of tomorrow.

But, when everything is flying off the walls, coming unplugged and the hurricanes of change are blowing thru our lives, we need to have something that doesn't change. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. But first we need to understand why there will be a "New Earth" and a "New Heaven" God's purpose was to live in intimate fellowship with man on a curse free earth, but when Adam and Eve sinned everything became different. Their fall changed the course of everything that would happen here on Earth. In the end our hope is the anticipation of uninterrupted and undiminished joy in the presence of the Lord.

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6-NIV) Jesus told many parables that the basic plot line was about a master leaving for awhile but will be coming back, and when the master comes back he is expecting an accounting of his servants. These parables are referring to Jesus' own ascension into Heaven and His second coming. In recounting these parables we must understand two things...Heaven itself isn't a reward, yet Heaven will be a place of rewards.

We all have so many questions about what's next...what will it be like... but one thing we do know is that we must believe the God of Heaven is bigger than our concerns

When someone says, let me tell you a story about Heaven and they start talking about homes, foods, places to see and places to play, why do you immediately assume they are telling a joke? Why are the thoughts of the physical almost always separated from the celestial? It seems like most people think that Heaven as a mystical ghostly place instead of a real material, physical and tangible place.
In the third sermon of this series we will be shown the three realities we will experience in the next life.

History is filled with famous last words and sometimes those last words stay with us and resinate though life. But, the most famous last words are those spoken by Jesus as he was being crusified on the cross.
While Christ took the punishment for our sins he uttered seven distinct prayers from the cross. It cost Christ everything to redeem us and His words from the cross proves His love for us.

Questions like Where did I come from?, Why am I here? and Where am I going? are just a few that people ask all the time. In the last sermon of this series we take a look from the older brothers point of view. We see how he felt in the story of the prodigal son and why he felt that way toward his father and younger brother. Have you ever been homesick? Have you ever missed your family so bad that you want to drop everything you are doing just to go home again? Even those of us that leave home because we think the grass is greener in the "far country", seem to remember how good it was at home.
Continuing in the sermon series, we are following the Prodigal Son that has left home, but now he realizes that he needs to go home to his Father. All the bad decisions made because of wrong beliefs makes the lost realize that it is never to late to come home.

In the story of the Prodigal Son you wonder which one of the men you would rather have for a son/ Which one is bad? Which one is good? But if you really think about the story you find yourself asking 'which son does the father love the most?', But what we haven't heard is the story through the eyes of the Father. But there is a bigger question here... what kind of relationship do you want with your eternal Father?

Have you noticed, nobody is lost anymore? People are unchurched, people are seekers, people are on a journey, people are writing their testimony, but nobody is 'lost'. In the book of Luke, Jesus told several parables the all started with something of value that was 'lost'. Then notice that each story moves toward a recovery and then ends with a party. (Luke 15) Jesus can to find and pay with the 'lost' because He said He wants everyone to see God, for if you never see God right, then you will never see people right.

An encourager is someone who meets people at their point of need and will do whatever it takes to get them on their feet. Rather that is speaking up for someone who has had a bad past, encouraging the church to have a bold vision or even promoting a colleague with superior abilities above yourself. After all, encouragement cannot thrive where competitiveness and jealousy are nourished. We all must be willing to create a place for those who need second chances and give them the encouragement they need to thrive.

"Be doers of the word, and not hears only, deceiving your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But, he who looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does." (James 1:22-25 NKJV)

Have you ever asked yourself, what does the church do for people who fall and can't get up? Many feel as though the church does nothing, the church often ignores the needs of people outside their congregation, but in-fact, the church helps people by giving them an encouraging word and spiritually nurturing them among providing worldly help.
Everybody needs encouragement, from the hard hearted to the broken hearted, we all must encourage one another to remain faithful and be there for each other. So, who are you going to run beside this week?

We have added so many things to the Christmas season, that what used to be a celebration has now become a frustration. We should not be saying "I'll be glad when Christmas is over" we are supposed to be celebrating the joyous news of God coming to us in Jesus. So when you think of Christmas, you think of home and when you think of home you think of joy. How do we come home to joy? We expect it, we choose it and we go back and rejoice because it is time to come home to joy.

Facing the future sometimes is unsettling, the mystery of the unknown can cause anxiety and fear. But, as Christ followers we do not face these fears alone. Jesus even made comment to the disciples on the sea "Why are you afraid, oh you of little faith?"
What happens in your life is not breaking news to God and faith fixes the fear so we do not have to know all the answers now; the end is not yet; all we have to know is the way and we can trust the end. For Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. We must have faith the God is in the details, so replace your fears and anxiety with thoughts of God and listen to God's word to you.

One of the greatest struggles that we, as Christ-followers, face every day is the tension between seeking the approval of God and seeking the approval of other people. At our core, we are people pleasers. We want to be liked, even admired. We want to be seen as the hero. Often, we make decisions that are based solely on avoiding conflict and keeping someone happy. Sadly, sometimes those decisions may compromise our faith as well as our integrity. Sometimes, inside the spectrum of the church, we allow disgruntled members to sway us from the path God is leading us down and determine to just "keep the peace" rather than to be obedient.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

Every single one of us have either dealt with a mess in our life in the past, are dealing with a mess now or are headed for a mess sometime soon. Thus, it is critical that we understand how to FOLLOW JESUS in the midst of a mess. Most people believe that the book of Revelations was written to explain end times. But, in reality, it was written as an encouragement to Christ-followers who were living through a very messy time. The book makes it very clear that Jesus can be counted on when times are bad...that the Messiah is bigger than the mess. We are also told that we will share in His ultimate victory and that He will return one day as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I have no clue what you are going through as you read this email, but I do know that God is faithful in the messy seasons of our lives and that He promises that better days are ahead. Maybe you remember the story which chronicles the encounter between Jesus and a man we know as the Rich Young Ruler. The privileged young man came to Jesus and asked an eternally important question, "How do I make it into Heaven?" Before Jesus could answer, he presented his impressive pedigree which included a nearly perfect record in commandment keeping. He was, by his own reckoning, a nearly perfect candidate for Heaven. However, Jesus offered a different perspective. He congratulated the young man for his morality and clean slate. Then He said, "But, if you want to see Heaven, you need to go and sell all you have and give it to the poor. Then, you need to follow me." In reality, he was simply asking the young man to make the pursuit of faith his number one priority. The Bible says, "that he went away sad" because he felt the cost was too high. May I ask if there is anything in your life so valuable that it takes priority over Jesus? It's very easy to choose the material over the spiritual and the temporary over the eternal. When you make the easy choice, you will rarely be following Jesus. Truth is following always involves sacrifice; certainly not one of our favorite words. I'm much more interested in the benefits of Christ-Following than in the sacrifices. But as soon as the Rich Young Ruler departed, Jesus turned to his disciples and explained an extraordinary mathematical truth, WHATEVER YOU SACRIFICE IN MY NAME WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU 100X OVER. Now, that's a deal you can't pass up! Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

A hypocrite is easy to spot. They aren't genuine, always pretending to be something they aren't. They behave differently when they are with different crowds. It is my sworn duty to call them out and set them straight. I am going to confront every one of them I can (in Christian love, of course). I can't wait to purify our congregation.
But wait just a minute. Before I start, I may need to change a thing or two, or a hundred. I may need to be sure that I'm consistent and authentic. I may need to be sure that I'm the same on Monday as I am on Sunday. After careful consideration, I realize my own hypocrisy. Looking in the mirror can be telling and tough. If we say no, or if we are hesitant, we could miss out on an extravagant blessing. So, where is God telling you to go?Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)
We continue to write new chapters of our story as we move through this transformational series, "My Story". This weekend we are going to focus on a beautiful love story which features Ruth and Boaz. If you recall the story, you realize that many good things happened because Ruth made a decision to STAY when leaving would have been an easier choice. All of us have faced that same decision at critical moments in our life. Should I stay or should I go? Often, it's prudent to just go, to get out of Dodge, to run. But, sometimes, God makes it clear we should STAY. We should put in the hard work, or deal with the mess, or find the strength to forgive or to humbly apologize. Staying for the long haul can be the pathway to extravagant blessings. Join us this weekend for "My Story, I decided to STAY".Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

Everyone has a story to tell. Parts of that story we are proud to tell, other parts we would rather not mention. We determined that allowing God to help write our story makes it a story worth telling. In order for us to have a great story out there in the future, we have to make wise decisions today. Thus, there are things in all of our lives that we have to give up. Things we have to simply stop doing. I'm sure that for all of us it is something different. It could be an addiction, a bad relationship, a gossiping tongue or a complete reliance on technology. But, whatever it is, it has a very negative effect on our story. So, this Sunday, as we continue to write our stories, we will focus on what we need to stop. I hope you are remembering to pray about what you decided to start and that great things are happening in your life.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

All of us have a story. The story of who we are, where we have been and how we got to be where we are. It is amazing to think about how seemingly insignificant decisions we make along the journey have deeply affected our story. The decisions we make today will determine the stories we tell tomorrow. Our choices really matter. We must determine today what we need to start; what we need to stop; if we need to go or, if we need to stay. What a great Resurrection weekend we have to look forward to. We will focus on the heart of the gospel, the foundation of our faith...the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. It is a distinct proclamation and is what makes Christianity unique among religions. We serve a risen Lord! If Jesus can defeat death, He can do anything! So, be here this weekend and expect anything to happen. After all, it's Easter, it's Resurrection Day, it's the weekend where God likes to show off. I, for one, can't wait!!!Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." He was asserting that His presence on the earth made everything brighter and better and that He was a direct revelation of God, Himself. Light illuminates, light diminishes the darkness, light eradicates evil, light draws attention to that which is high and holy. Jesus did all of that and more. Would you allow Jesus to be your light? Perhaps to shine His light into the dark places of your soul? Would you become a shining reflection of His light? Living in the light, moving out of the darkness, it changes everything. Let your light shine! Join us this weekend and learn how.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

Jesus often compared Himself and His Father to shepherds. He used this imagery when He wanted to describe how God cares for His children. He made it clear that God deals with us with compassion, concern, and care as a shepherd would to his sheep. The tougher comparison is that of you and I, as Christ-followers, being compared to sheep. Sheep have a lot of unsavory characteristics. They are stubborn, stupid, vulnerable, filthy, and easily influenced, just to name a few. Does that sound like anybody you know? Maybe we are more like sheep than we want to admit. Bottom line is that we are all in need of a GOOD SHEPHERD! Be here this weekend and meet Him for the first time or get to know Him again.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

We begin a very important series this weekend, "The Big Day" weekend, entitled I AM JESUS. The series is based on Jesus' I Am statements in the gospel of John and offer us profound insight to who Jesus really was and what His hope for us is. In John 15, Jesus tells us that He is the Vine, that His power comes from His connection to God and that if we are connected, we will know the truth and we will be filled with His power. Spiritual fruit comes from that connection, it could even be said that everything good about us comes from being connected to the "true vine". Without that connection, we are helpless and hopeless. How about you? Feeling a little lost? Maybe lonely or empty? Just generally not where you should be. Come this weekend and find a new connection, an eternal connection to the VINE.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)
We conclude "Losing My Religion" by considering the lesson of the figless fig tree. It appeared to be a perfectly healthy fig tree, green and lots of leaves, but it had no fruit. This tree was a great irritant to Jesus and He used it as an example of the futility of religion. Religion has a perfectly fine outward appearance, but the reality is that often it has very little meaningful substance. It might look like it is "of God", but truth is it's man-made. Thus, sometimes we need to "lose our religion", so we can focus on things that really matter. I hope to see you Sunday.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

"Losing My Religion" continues this weekend with a look at Luke 15 where religious activity and a personal relationship with God collide head-on in the story of the Prodigal Son. We see a repentant sinner, a loving God and an unforgiving religious person all play their roles in this classic parable. Jesus makes it clear that the party takes place when repentance and grace meet and that self-righteous people will always miss the party. If you are religious, you don't think you need a redeemer. If you are self-righteous, you don't think you need a savior. If you are good enough, you don't think you need grace. Count me in with the prodigal, the guy who is slowly making his way home, ready to plead for mercy! How about you?Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

This weekend, we will consider how easy it is for us to fall into the trap of religion, rituals and rules. So often, we simply go through the motions and never consider why we do what we do. Our faith can become performance-driven and lose it's focus. In Matthew 12, Jesus is questioned about his lack of adherence to the religious laws of the day and his answer is simply, "My Father values mercy over sacrifice." Thus, we learn what matters to God, mercy, grace, forgiveness, compassion, and love. But somewhere along the way, the church forgot that we make it about orthodoxy and rules. We aren't much different from the Pharisees. Every week, I have a conversation or two with someone who is upset because somebody is doing something that doesn't jive with their rules or rituals. Matthew 12 makes it clear that's not what being a Christ-follower is supposed to look like. When the church becomes rigid and harsh, we repel those who are searching for Christ. We fail to do precisely what God created the church to do. Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

This weekend, we begin a brand new series entitled, "Losing My Religion". We will explore the positive value of trading your religion for a relationship with Jesus Christ. Beginning at the Tower of Babel, mankind commenced on a journey to reach to Heaven, to see God and to understand Him, to earn His favor. But, we never succeeded. We were never wise enough, moral enough or RELIGIOUS enough. Thus, God determined to visit us. To become one of us, He gave us the opportunity to trade our "filthy rag" righteousness for His perfection. Now, we don't have to look for Him. He finds us. To access His grace and His salvation, we simply accept His gift and trust His word. We lose our religion and we gain a life-changing relationship that fits us for Heaven. So, join us for the next 4 weeks and "Lose Your Religion".Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

A beautiful story of love, forgiveness and redemption is found in the prophetic writings of Hosea. The book parallels the relationship between God and Israel and Hosea and his wife, Gomer. Over and over again, Israel would move in and out of relationship with God and the same thing happened between Hosea and Gomer. She was a former prostitute and she unexpectedly left her marriage and returned to her former life. Despite the hurt and the shame, Hosea searched till he found her and paid the purchase price for her freedom. It is critical that you remember that is exactly what God has done for each of us through Christ. We are less than consistent in our faith, often we rebel or literally run away from Him. But, He continues to pursue us and continues to pour out His mercy on us. Unmerited, undeserved, unlimited and unchanging mercy.Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

It is very easy to waver in our faith. Sometimes, it seems that our doubts are greater than our assurances and that our fear overwhelms our faith. Thus, it is comforting to know that Abraham, who is scripturally synonymous with the word faith, had a few struggles himself. After God told he and Sarah that they were going to become parents at extremely advanced ages, there was more doubt than faith. Matter of fact, they laughed out loud (LOL). So, even the most faithful among us have faithless seasons. These are times when God seems to be silent; when our fear overwhelms our faith. I want to remind you that even when we are faithless, God is still faithful. When we are weak, He is strong. When we are fearful, He calms us. When we doubt, He proves Himself. Join us Sunday as we look at the relationship between Sarah and Abraham and answer the question, "how old is too old"?Support the show (https://onrealm.org/burlingtonbaptist/-/give/XVSXTRONUP)

We begin this weekend with one of the most unique couples found in scripture, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. Their relationship was like fire and ice. It seems like they did everything backwards and against the will of God. As a result, they suffered the ultimate punishment. Look at 1 Kings 21 for the details. You will find proof positive that the wrong relationship or a relationship with the wrong person will literally destroy you. If you are struggling through a difficult time in your relationship(s), this will be a good message for you to hear because Ahab and Jezebel's horrific relationship will make you feel a little better about yours (no matter how bad it is, believe me theirs is worse.).
