When people are thinking of changing it’s usually because they aren’t getting results and start to wonder, can someone else do better? Usually, you start questioning things when you, the patient, start to lose confidence in your doctor or center. Maybe mistakes have been made or the center you go to is disorganized; maybe you just feel like you need a fresh start.
Sometimes it’s hard to know how long to stick it out before switching things up. Before jumping the gun, ask yourself what’s important to you? Do you want your doctor to be especially good at working with your specific condition? Is it important for you to be able to get a hold of them? Does your doctor make you feel heard? What works best for you, financially?
There are also a lot of benefits of having one doctor learn your body and how you respond to medications because it can help them develop a better protocol for you. That is, unless they are too busy to think critically about your case. A general rule of thumb is stick with your doctor for at least 3 cycles. Why? Well, studies show that sticking with the same protocol has ended up with success. So although it did not work THIS time, it could work the next. At the same time, you know your body best and sometimes you just know something isn’t right and you need to try something new. The key is to ask questions and advocate for yourself.
Now, from a holistic perspective, it’s important to look at what you’re doing with your life. A lot of patients who have gone through multiple cycles, doctors, and protocols have not stopped to take inventory of the basics. Are you overly stressed? Are you drinking a lot? Eating poorly? Maybe you aren’t sleeping enough? It’s important to look at what could be going on in your life that could be affecting your reproductive outcomes. We have more power than we know over our journey, but often we give a lot of that power to someone else - so TAKE IT BACK. Empowerment can come through wellness. It transforms our lives. Hopefully it gets us our baby, but it'll get you much more than that too.
