Today's guest is a Minneapolis-based writer and director whose works include Rideshare, Lucid Dreams, See You Soon, and the acclaimed feature film, BLACK in Minneapolis. A recipient of the 2020 McKnight Media Artist Fellowship and a 2022 Catalyst Story Institute alum, he started his career in documentary filmmaking when he was 14 years old, with many of his stories revolving around social justice. At 15, he won the Screenlabs Challenge Audience Award at the Screenwriters’ Workshop. At 20, he worked on his first commercial project, where he learned about the craft of lighting. Today, he continues to work as a creative director for his production company, We-Co Films, and more recently as the author of a debut novel, N57. It is my pleasure to introduce David J. I’ve always loved trains, whether they were my childhood model trains or real trains, trains have been an adventure for me all of my life, so it was only natural for me to take the auto train to Florida for a visit with the grand-kids. Traveling on the Auto Train offers a unique and convenient way to explore the East Coast of the United States without leaving your car behind. Operated by Amtrak, the Auto Train runs nonstop between Lorton, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., and Sanford, Florida, near Orlando, allowing passengers to relax in comfortable accommodations while their vehicles are safely transported in specialized rail-cars. The Auto Train combines the freedom of a road trip with the comfort of rail travel...no traffic, no overnight driving, and plenty of time to unwind.Fortunately my wife Sarah is an experienced travel agent and she was the one who booked this trip.Using my old iPhone I recorded some of the more interesting moments starting with getting there.
"Jabberwocky" by Lewis CarrollFirst produced while studying television production in 1970 at the University of Michigan and recorded in black and white using 2” recording tape, combining puppets with live actors. The opening and closing segments of this updated color production utilize the original puppets that were used in the black and white version some 50 years ago. Ironically I started creating the Jaberwocky puppet long before the Corona Virus hit the world stage but it’s uncanny resemblance to my puppet has given me some hope that humanity will prevail.

It was 1964 or maybe ‘65, I spent time at night listening to WOR's Jean Shepherd on my vacuum tube Motorola, sometimes wondering if the people inside those tubes were really inside my Motorola. My high school friend John Krasnow had written a poem, “Ode to Jersey City” and now I was hearing Jean Shepherd reading it on the radio! Apparently Norman Kelson had sent the poem into Jean Shepherd and by chance Shepherd read it on the radio. I missed the beginning but as soon as I could I turned on my Tandberg and recorded what was left.

On Sunday, September 23, 1990 an exhibit titled Watercolors by Jim Tanaka: a retrospective was held at the Alpine Community House in Alpine, New Jersey.
The show curated by Suzanne Katzman featured over fifty of Tanakas paintings as well as his iconic full size and mini jazz posters.

Well, that apparition is Aurora and she’s come to council Helen a robustly healthy seventy-two-year-old who will soon realize that she has a lot to learn from Aurora, who for the next few weeks will be her "Guardian Godmother Guide to the Happiness of Organization". Such is the creative plot to a book written by today’s guest who is also a publisher at Savour Europe, a magazine for travelers planning to make Europe their home for 3-6 months a year, a writer of narrative non-fiction as well as since 2007 the Chief Executive Officer for Your Health Span http://www.yourhealthspan.ca and currently serves as Director of Outreach for MagCast. Aurora and Helen are characters from her book “Live Life Fully” and it is my pleasure to welcome the books author Jill Burk to our show.
Award-winning educator and author Valerie Foster discusses her book “The Risk of Sorrow: Conversations with Holocaust Survivor Helen Handler”. Foster, a retired high school teacher met Handler when she invited her to speak in her English class. “The minute I saw her I felt like I had known her forever. It really was one of those rare, immediate bonds” said Foster in a 2014 Jewish News interview. They met once a week for two years so Foster could preserve Handler’s testimony in written form.

For the past 92 years Dorothy Neff has been and continues to hone her musical skills in a variety of ways. I was recently invited to visit with her in her enchanting ranch home in Ridgewood New Jersey where she took me on a tour of her hallway photo gallery. Our interview was occasionally interrupted by a tiny guest who Dorothy happily introduced to me. A phone call during this interview brought out another interest that Dorothy was pursuing. Though she no longer teaches the Suzuki method Dorothy reminisced about her many students.

In addition to receiving multiple public speaking awards he has served as Vice President of the Education Committee for Toastmasters International.

Dr. Vroom opened a medical office in Ridgewood, New Jersey and created the first hospital in a small wing of the building. The late Doctor Richard William Lenk who was a professor emeritus at Bergen Community College and a long-standing member of the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians asked me to digitize this recording of the interview so that it could be shared. I first met today's guest in Austin, Texas on March 23, 2013 on South Congress Ave. between Annie Street East and Milton Street East, while I was recording street musicians for my Texas Road Trip podcast which is where I recorded him playing his original tune “Sing Like The Sages” https://themisterradio.blogspot.com/2013/05/texas-road-trip-2013-brad-sage.html. A native of Austin Texas, he learned to sing and write from around the age of 12. He has studied Resource Environmental Science at both Austin Community College and Texas State University and prior to this attended school at the MediaTech Institute for Sound Engineering and Live Production. According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes, and trends shaping the world, currently about three in 10 U.S. adults or 29%, are religious “nones”, that's spelled N-O-N-E-S, or people who describe themselves as atheists, agnostics, or nothing in particular when asked about their religious identity.
This is only one of the challenges facing religious leaders today. COVID, social media and politics are also in the mix. To discuss these and other issues. I reached out by telephone to three faith leaders in the village of Ridgewood, New Jersey, a suburban bedroom community of New York city located approximately 20 miles Northwest of Midtown Manhattan.
I opened my interview with the results of the recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, as well as a series published by The Record on religion and suburban houses of worship in Northern New Jersey, which have lost between 40 to 50% of their congregations and asked my guests, if they had noticed a drop in their membership as well.

Hurricane Ida destroyed my recording studio and so our scheduled return in November has been placed on an indefinate hiatus. Before I place what’s left of my studio into temporary storage I decided to take out my trusty PCM-D50 battery operated recorder to introduce a fan favorite, another track from Ululation 2 by John Lee Krasnow. Here is the first track from the “B” side of the album titled “Cruel & Unusual”. The track features Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, Paul Ostermayer, soprano and alto sax, John Lee Krasnow, baritone sax, Eric Goletz, trombone and additional keyboards, Bill Patton, bass and guitar and Ron Vincent, drums. Today’s guest grew up in El Paso, Texas where, in his own words, “the desert southwest and the mountains of southern New Mexico left an indelible impression on his soul.” The recipient of six Texas Music Awards, including "Song of the Year" for the title cut on his album “Find Your Shine” he was also a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2000. It was 2013 when I first became fully immersed in the Texas Music scene while recording an early Mister Radio episode at the Picker Circle in Luckenbach, Texas, then I finally understood why many critics say that all the best singer songwriters come from Texas, in fact one reviewer for Americana magazine, when writing about my guest, stated that “some may argue against this fact but it’s true; the dissenters are wrong. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, the names go on, and now there’s one more to add to the list...Kevin Higgins.” It is my honor to introduce today’s guest, Kevin Higgins.
Awarded the 2012 United States Artists Friends Fellow in recognition of the excellence of his work today’s guest has been an inspiration to many other progressive musicians. He has been playing the banjo since 1963 and worked on the soundtrack for “Driving Miss Daisy”. His 2007 album, “Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular”, featured appearances by Steve Martin, Earl Scruggs, and many other banjo luminaries. The recipient of two International Bluegrass Music Association awards as well as a Grammy nomination he also received the award for Banjo Player of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association. The New York Times has reffered to him as “the father of modern bluegrass.” It is my honor to introduce today’s guest, Tony Trischka.
A folksinger from “The Gentle Isle”, Prince Edward Island, who learned to play by ear at an early age and was immersed in a culture of family kitchen parties and by age 13 was performing professionally on stage. His connection to Maritime folk music dates back to the efforts of his great-grandparents who where preservers of folklore in Prince Edward Island. Today he is carrying the torch forward with his own songs, inspired by rural life and Maritime history and known as an “old-school troubadour,” performing upwards of 200 gigs a year. In 2020 he released his debut album, "Place to the Name” and just one year later released his second album, “Second Wind.” Steacy Easton referred to him as “...the maritime storyteller that I am most excited to hear more from.” Music P.E.I. Week recently nominated him for the Maritime Electric Lloyd Doyle New Artist of the Year and Contemporary Roots Country Recording of the Year awards. It is my honor to introduce today’s guest, Shane Pendergast.
Today’s guest is a Swedish singer-songwriter living in Visby, the capital city of the magical Swedish island of Gotland. She has made regular appearances in TV and Radio and has roots in Americana, folk and pop, writing music for herself as well as other artists. In 1993 her first single Oktoberbarn (October Child) made it perfectly clear that she was an extraordinary talent, and the single made it to the Swedish Top Ten. She has shared the spotlight with various international artists and currently has 13 albums to her credit and in addition to fronting her own group A.F.T. she also performs with the band GLIMRA and is the producer of the singer-songwriter series Living Room which to date has had over 300 concerts arranged with international and national artists, both well-known and new stars. Paul McGee in a review for her album “In the Universe” wrote, “sung with both passion and a gentle tone...the expansive feel reminds me of early John Martyn and Nic Jones when they were exploring the line where folk interpretations stopped and jazz leanings took sway.” It is my honor to introduce today’s guest, Annika Fehling.

Today’s guest has been a guitarist with the rhythm and blues group Genesis III, the Jimmy James Jazz Orchestra and has performed as a freelance member of various New York society orchestras. In addition to teaching music, he currently has students from ages 7 to 70, he has also been the guitarist for vocalist Carmen John as well as a classical guitarist for the “From Bach to Broadway” ensembles. A solo guitarist throughout the New York metropolitan area, he has also performed as the guitarist with vocalist Gradie Stone and as a member of the Local 16-248 Jazz Big Band. He is the owner and founder of MillSound Music and is currently the President of the American Federation of Musicians Local 16-248. The American Federation of Musicians is comprised of 80,000 members in the United States and Canada. Its members perform in orchestras, backup bands, festivals, clubs and theaters both on Broadway and on tour. The American Federation of Musicians members also make music for films, TV, commercials and sound recordings and it is the largest union of musicians in the world.

As a New York freelance musician, today’s guest has played more gigs and, in more situations, than he could possibly ever list, but moving to New York in the early 80's a lot of young players started gigging in the Latin circuit which was huge at that time. A player could work with multiple Latin groups and multiple gigs in one night, often not finishing before the sun came up. It was through these gigs that he met many players in other bands, and eventually found his way to playing many engagements with Latin artists such as Celia Cruz, Tito Puentes and Dave Valentin. In the ’90s he fronted a contemporary fusion group of his original music and arrangements led by Tenor and Bass trombones and released a sampler CD. Upon hearing his CD Jazziz magazine voted him one of the top 10 unsigned jazz artists in the country and released a compilation CD which included his original composition “Night Child”.

Early in his career he managed the Basie alumni band, The Countsmen and for 17 years ran the Jazz at The West End jazz room on Broadway at 114th St in New York City. He attended Columbia University and during his freshman year began broadcasting jazz on the Columbia University radio station, WKCR-FM, and he has been a radio broadcaster ever since.The jazz critic Stanley Crouch once wrote that, “There is no person in America more dedicated to any art form than today’s guest is to jazz. He is the Mr. Memory of jazz, and, as with the Mister memory character in “The Thirty-Nine Steps,” the Hitchcock movie, there are those who think he ought to be shot. Todays guest is from from Wilton, New Hampshire and has been playing and sharing her love of the Appalachian dulcimer for over 25 years. Over the years she has led many workshops at festivals in New England and New York. Today’s guest is also a contra dancer, caller, and dance organizer but her greatest joy comes from bringing people together around music. For her dulcimer students, whom she is now teaching on Zoom, her goal is to help each player find their own unique musical voice. Some of the repertoire worshops that she has led throughout New England include, Shape Note hymns, Breton, Welch, and Manx tunes, tunes from the fife and drum corps tradition, jigs, waltzes, and hornpipes. She also has lead technique workshops. One festival organizer called her "...a delightful and insightful teacher who delivers the goods with clarity and humor."

Kip Ferguson is a singer of traditional songs and writes and performs original acoustic music as a member of the duo Coyote Bleux. He lives in New Hampshire and together with long-time musical collaborators and friends Kevin Meyers and Sandy Lafleur is a founder of the Celtic Camping Ceilidh. Kevin Meyers was the Duty Piper for all the Celtic Camping Ceilidh and Sandy Lafleur was the "Seisiun Mum" and one of the original organizers for the group "The Rakes of Milford". Scottish Cowboy features Kevin on uillean pipes and Sandy on dulcimer and clip-clops. It was recorded at Richard's studio and we had lots of friends singing with us. Most recently he has been a writer, director and producer at the Bas Bleu Theater in Fort Collins, Colorado. It is my honor to introduce today’s guest, Brett Sylvia.

Today’s guest is the Artistic Director of Art of Motion, Inc. a non-profit and home to The Art of Motion Dance Theatre. She has toured six out of seven continents and almost all of the United States. A former soloist with the Nikolais Dance Theatre she is the recipient of an international Andrew W. Mellon Cultural Exchange Fund Award and a National Dance Magazine Award for Choreography. Her work has been featured at the global TEDMED Conference held at the Kennedy Center, as well as Jacob’s Pillow and The Smithsonian Museum. She has been recognized by foundations, universities and press including Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, the Daily News and the Village Voice. She earned her B.A. in Dance from Connecticut College where she was the recipient of the Dance Magazine National Award for choreography. Her work COOL WAVE, featured in Dance Magazine was performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Today’s guest is an American singer-songwriter, novelist, and educator. He was a big part of the 1980s folk revival in Greenwich Village clubs, performing at the Speakeasy, The Bottom Line and Folk City, he also co-founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival. His songs have been covered by Dave Van Ronk, Shawn Colvin, Four Bitchin’ Babes, Jonathan Edwards, Garnet Rogers, Joe Jencks, and others. He has appeared on stage with fellow artists, including Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow, Odetta, Tom Paxton, the Violent Femmes, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, Richie Havens, Ani DiFranco, Tom Chapin, Jack Hardy and David Massengill. Although usually labeled a folk singer, his musical styles include rock, pop, country, light jazz, and blues. His album “Later that Night” was named “Best Local CD of 2014” by The Palm Beach Post and reached the top ten in the national folk music charts. The late Dave Van Ronk called him "One of the best of the singer-songwriters ever to come out of the New York movement."

Called "ardent and assured" and a first-class pianist by the New York Times, he has appeared in partnership with many of the worlds leading singers and instrumentalists, including over five dozen artists on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. Passionately committed to the performance of chamber music, he is a founding member of the Palisades Virtuosi, the Janus Consort, the Hudson Trio, Kaleidoscope, the New World Trio and the Manchester Chamber Players. He has been the pianist and harpsichordist of the Oberlin Orchestra, the New Jersey Philharmonic and the Westchester Symphony and is currently keyboardist of the Albany Symphony and its contemporary chamber ensemble "Dogs of Desire". Since 1985 he has been associated with the Southern Vermont Arts Center and its resident Manchester Music Festival. ln 1991 during Carnegie Hall's Centennial Week celebration he recreated the earliest known piano recital by Franz Rummel to have been played there. That same year, he made his international debut in Iceland, playing two recitals, one all-Grieg, the other all-Russian.His performance was reviewed by Dagbladid-Visir, Reykjavik Iceland as “...performed with considerable assurance . . tremendous speed ... A very special atmosphere was established, which was maintained throughout."

When the New York Times book critic Dennis Lehane writes about the opening of James Ellroy’s novel, “Perfidia” he states. “There — Whalen’s Drugstore, Sixth and Spring Streets. The site of four recent felonies. 211 PC — Armed Robbery.” For better and often for worse, that style — jumpy, feverish and anarchic — mirrors the world we enter.” So too does our opening track reflect this jumpy, feverish and anarchic feeling. Composed and arranged by today’s guest, a musician who has performed and recorded with many world class musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Henderson, The Temptations, 10,000 Maniacs, The Four Tops and many others. My guest is a saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator as well as the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble, an adjunct jazz professor at Bergen Community College, Bergen Catholic High School’s Jazz Ensemble director and vice-president of the Rockland County Jazz and Blues Society. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Arts Council of Rockland’s 2019 Performing Artist Award.

My guests band has released several critically acclaimed albums; including, 2014's "Atlas," which reached No. 34 on the U.S. Billboard Album chart and received a Best New Music designation from the taste-making website Pitchfork. Best known as the bassist of the American indie rock band Real Estate, with whom he has recorded four studio albums. And, as the frontman and primary recording artist of the indie rock band “Alex Bleeker and the Freaks”. In 2015 Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joined his band onstage at Outside Lands.
I interviewed him seven years ago, at which time he explained how the California sound and the internet have helped shape his way in the world of music. Now, seven years later, it is my honor and pleasure to introduce today’s guest Alex Bleeker.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica defines Renaissance man, also called Universal Man, as an ideal that developed in Renaissance Italy that “a man can do all things if he will.” The ideal embodied the basic tenets of Renaissance humanism, which considered man the center of the universe, limitless in his capacities for development, and led to the notion that men should try to embrace all knowledge and develop their own capacities as fully as possible.
