Pulmonary function tests are used all the time in the inpatient and outpatient setting. They can help nail a new diagnosis of COPD, or track pulmonary function in children with cystic fibrosis.  Newer tests can identify neuromuscular respiratory disease before symptoms present, and even help diagnose asthma in a toddler.
