Conscious awareness - recognizing your thoughts and being in touch with your feelings. Every day we experience sensations throughout the body. How aware are you?
Start to become aware of what you’re feeling and what your inner narrative is if you want to feel better. It may not initially impact how you feel, but it will help expedite healing once you’re actively working with someone towards inner wellness.
Start to recognize the sensations in your body. Our thoughts which affect our feelings are often based off of our formed beliefs and projections. Ex: underlying belief: People don’t really care about me. People don’t really want to know what I have to say.
People often respond based off of their own formed beliefs or projections. Reactions are a result of people feeling emotionally triggered. I may interpret your facial expression, your tone, or your words in a way that confirms my bias, “people don’t really care about me. They don’t really want to know what I have to say,” and all because of my experiences in childhood that caused me to believe that was true.
Mindfulness isn’t the same as overthinking and analyzing your thoughts or the situations at hand.
Disconnecting/Dissociating/Numbing - they are ways to cope and manage during stressful + traumatic times. You needed to get by somehow, and if that was your means of protecting yourself, have compassion on yourself as you work to cope a different way.
Remember, anger masks soft emotions such as disappointment, hurt, pain, sadness, overwhelm. When those emotions aren’t expressed, verbally, through tears, or otherwise - they MUST come out at some point! Explosive behavior is often because of suppressed emotions.
Awareness is one of the first steps to get to know yourself better. Getting to know your authentic self more fully is key to healing!
Remember, trauma isn’t just the big events that we all immediately think of - it’s also the neglect and emotional abandonment received during developmental years of childhood.
