Sleep is important for rest, but what about the struggle to sleep when you have a chance? Kylee Nelson came on the show back in the Spring and shared her tips on improving sleep. To listen to that go here, episode 16. If you lay down to rest and thoughts flood your mind, here’s what you can do. Be intentional to process what’s happening in your life through out the day, so that you aren’t flooded with intrusive, or other thoughts, when you go to lay down. Engaging with your thoughts is necessary. Create pockets of time before you lay down to allow your mind to process and wander. The pockets of time you create can be small, and quick. Start small and build up!

On the practical, if I rest and get woken prematurely, I will let myself drift back off to sleep. I’ll close my eyes and lay there and wait for sleep to come. Personally, music helps me block some noise out and helps me drift off to sleep. I will lay down and shut my eyes for an hour, even if I can’t fall asleep. It still gives my body rest which is productive!

Rest of course isn’t just about sleep. Simplify your schedule. Figure out how to create space in your days/weeks for down time, creativity and play. As a family, my husband and I intentionally shifted our entire lifestyle to create more time for rest and connection. Because we homeschooled our kids, it turned out to be a better fit for us to share the load of teaching and parenting. This meant that my kids weren’t spending all of their days just with their exhausted mom, but now dad was around to help and that relieved me of certain responsibilities, creating new pockets of time for rest + fun!

Because I was a parentified child living codependent, doing-doing-doing for everyone else and not allowing people to help me, I wore my body out. If you identify with always being on the go, and doing for others without letting them do the same for you, I am ready to support you in creating a simplified life with more times for rest + play!
