I’m going to share about one of my experiences that caused me to feel deep rejection. This conversation is evidence of more inner healing because this is not something I would have opened up to talk about, even a short while ago.
I share a bit about my life story. My husband and I began dating Feb 2010 and immediately experienced prejudice. I was a reminder to others of their past pain. I don’t think unresolved trauma is an excuse for our actions, but I do think it’s an explanation why we respond/react the way we do. Even though I held space for that reality, being rejected still hurt immensely.
What I’ve learned through my experiences is that I can embrace my authentic self and allow others to be different than me. I’ve learned to worry less about the judgement and criticism others will send my way. Judgement and criticism happens no matter how we live. In some form or another, it always has been present and always will be.
The pain, trauma, tragedy of life doesn’t need to change us into someone callous and negative. We have a choice. We will be changed and reshaped by the difficulties of life, but in what way?
Will the tragedy in life shut you down, or will you allow it to create an expansion of love within you? There’s an opportunity to become a higher version of yourself. Pain doesn’t have to define you.
We’ll all unconsciously hurt others. I know I have. Recognizing that allows us to carry more compassion in our heart for the times we are hurt by others. Whenever we walk through a situation we can empathize and relate with someone else who has gone through a similar situation. It gives us a different lens on life.
I want to close by saying how sorry I am for any prejudice, racism, and rejection you have experienced. It’s never been okay. You should never be treated differently for the way you look, and it grieves me.
Here’s the invitation to us all, what will you do with what’s been done to you? Don’t discredit what’s been done to you. There’s no need to dismiss or diminish it. Empowerment is possible, but it’s up to you. You have a choice. No one else can empower you without you choosing into it.
