Last week we began Matthew Chapter 6 about how we are to give, and how God the Father sees all we do in serving and giving to others and rewards us. He sees what we do to serve and give in secret, and He remembers it. Above all, it's important we do everything as unto the Lord, not just to show or gain people's approval. Instead, as we entrust our lives to Him, we can look for ways God blesses us every day. Because His ways are not our ways, we don’t always see His blessing at first.

How are you at keeping secrets? Secrets can often be a bad thing, but this isn’t a secret, but it does require us to trust in God who sees what we do in secret for Him. In the passage we read today there is a big difference between what you do to be seen by God and what we do to be seen by people. You might say it’s similar to the difference of being self-righteous and being declared righteous. This is the very thing Jesus wanted to clarify, that as Christians we don’t have to impress God or people to make ourselves look good. God always looks at the heart and he rewards those who diligently seek Him and honor Him in all we do and also in our giving.

This morning we are going back to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and this portion of his sermon Jesus addressed going beyond what was expected or required. How do we react to difficult things in the flesh compared to how we should live by the Spirit? How many of you are competitive? I can get this way myself. Sometimes I wonder if being competitive is a good thing or not. Sure we all like to win and that’s not necessarily a bad desire to have, is it? Where it can go wrong is if we try to win at all costs. But we know we can’t win them all, don’t we?

How are you doing as far as keeping your promises? How honest have we been to the things you’ve said yes to? In other words, can you be trusted? Surveys tell us men are most likely to lie about impersonal things. Women are most likely to lie about relational things. Statistics show us there is little difference between Christians and non-Christians, as far as our promises are concerned.

Not that I have ever done it, but anyone who knows about the risks of skydiving also knows that there are non-negotiable checkpoints that should be reviewed and rechecked to ensure safety. Just about every important decision in life has things that need to be in place and preparations that should be done before a decision like jumping out of an airplane is made. We also make numerous decisions every day, but do we truly make the right choices, and ignore the protection God has provided? Considering our decisions should be like checking our skydiving equipment. It should be checked and rechecked before you make that decision to jump to avoid disastrous results and ensure a good landing.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Today I want to look at a few different resurrection stories along with some different witness accounts of Jesus’s resurrection. What is perfectionism? It is trying to prove my worth by being perfect. Being a perfectionist could mean you have a high standard of how things should be, but people can take perfectionism into their relationship with God. Then it becomes a proving oneself to be good enough by keeping religious rule, or by trying to gain God’s approval. Perfectionism can be one of the biggest hang-ups for believers, they just always see it that way.

Since the beginning of the year, we have been going through the red letter words of Jesus and his famous sermon of the mount in Matthew 5-7. One of the major causes of unhappiness is trying to be like everybody else and trying to have everybody like you. There is a myth that says "To be happy I must be accepted or approved by everybody." but it doesn't work, does it? You just can't please everybody. Jesus was a realist and was very clear about the consequences of following him. He said If you follow me many people aren't going to approve of your decision, they're not going to like it.

A peacemaker is a reconciler; someone who can turn enemies into friends. It’s someone who steps in to make peace in difficult circumstances. Too often people don’t want to get involved, but it’s God’s will to reach out to others. We might not always want to, but how many of you have been blessed because you have had someone care enough to be a mediator or reconciler in your life? How many of you have had to step in and resolve a conflict? It’s not always easy or fun, but hopefully, you can discover how rewarding it is.

People these days are increasingly concerned with purity. We want to drink pure water. We want to breathe pure air. We want to eat pure foods. Each year Americans spend millions of dollars on water filers and purifiers. My refrigerator at home has a water and ice dispenser that has a water filter on it. As important as clean air, pure water, and pure food are, there is a sense of purity Americans tend to overlook.

Today we come to the fourth characteristic of a Kingdom citizen. We call them the Beatitudes, but I believe they are more than just an attitude. These eight characteristics Jesus spoke about are not exclusive, but Jesus identified these specifically as attributes that should become evident in a believer’s life.

View Details

Why are we going through the Beatitudes? Jesus shared about these as the characteristics of Kingdom citizens. They are attitudes that form in us, so that, we may fully apprehend all that the Kingdom of God has available. These Beatitudes are actually like “lenses” that the Kingdom is seen through because we must remember it is an invisible realm, and not just what we see with our eyes. His Kingdom represents His rule and His reign in and through us.

Today in Romans 16 as we come to a close of Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians I want to recognize Paul’s final comments to his friends, and how they can relate to us as being friends on the mission. His listing of friends says a lot about how he and we need one another as we serve the Lord and as we are all called to relationships. We are called to influence the world, and you can’t do that by yourself. So, let’s take a look at a few of Paul’s friends.

Last week in Romans 13 we talked about loving others and how this is one of our highest callings. Loving God and loving people. Above everything else these two things are the most important we should do, and as we see in these last few verses of Chapter 13 time is of the essence. Don’t wait to love and be like Jesus, but do it today! Clothe yourself with Jesus and be salt and light, which is also why we must cast off anything that can be deeds of darkness and not make any provision for our flesh.

Today we are going to begin with the first couple of verses in Romans 12 where Paul begins to address a battle we all face in our thought life and how we can win this battle. What I want to talk and think about today is how our thoughts essentially lead us in all sorts of directions. Now I believe most of us as Christians want to think and be led to be more like Jesus. We want to be spirit-led, then there is this battle happening that wars against that. So, Paul wants to acknowledge this and give his readers a few important reminders on how to have victory in our minds, because almost all our sin issues begin with a thought, and we either win in this battle or lose and give into temptations.

Today we are reading Romans 11. I want to thank Andrew for doing a great job of preaching last week in chapter 10. Much of chapter 10 is about the message of salvation and how faith comes by hearing and hearing through the Word of Christ (vs. 10:17). Looking back 10:18-21 Paul wrote that the message of God’s Word has gone out to the whole world, but Israel has rejected it. Paul quoted this from Psalm 19:4 as proof that the word of the gospel went forth and Israel heard it. This makes them more accountable for their rejection of the good news.

View Details

In Romans chapters one through eight, Paul thoroughly convinced us about man’s need and God’s amazing love provision in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit. Now, in Romans 9-11, Paul makes a slight shift and deals with the problem associated with the condition of Israel. What does it mean that Israel has missed its Messiah? What does this say about God? What does it say about Israel? What does it say about our present position in God?

Today as we look again at Romans 8 I want to share with your more about what life in the Spirit looks like. Chapter 8 is a wonderful description of God’s love and our adoption as children of God. This is very important because God wants us to know our identity and who He created us all to be as sons and daughters. Ultimately it is God’s eternal purpose for us to have a relationship with Him and our eternal life with Father God begins right now to become like him and live for Him.

Romans 8:28-39 could be seen as Paul’s closing argument for a conversation that he started all the way back in Chapter 5. Before we move into the final parts of Chapter 8 and for this message to really hit home today I felt the Lord wanted me to do a recap of Chapters 5-8 before finishing with Romans Chapter 8.

Today we are getting back to Romans and we are going to Chapter 7. Previously in chapter 6, we read about grace, and Paul asked some important questions. Because we are under grace, are we to continue in sin so that grace may abound? Then again in 6:15, Paul asks shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? Paul quickly objected to ever thinking that. No, by no means! Absolutely not.

Last week I talked about how we are to be dead to sin. We have been brought from death to life, and we are made alive in Christ. And sin should not reign in our life anymore. That’s how we used to live, but those former things we don’t belong to anymore. Throw your membership cards away. You don’t belong to that club anymore. It’s dead, buried, and not to be resurrected. You belong to Christ now, and he has made you new and He is to reign in your life.

Paul begins this portion of his letter (Chapter 6) with a question. Having just said, in chapter 5 that the law was given so that the trespass might increase, and where sin increased grace abounded all the more. And what I shared last week was that God’s grace is always greater than our greatest sin. So, as we acknowledge our sin we may turn from it and be led to Jesus and receive eternal life. Now, Paul asks shall we continue to sin so that grace might increase?

View Details

Today is a message about hope and grace. The main theme of this section is hope for those who trust in Jesus. Adam brought sin and death into the world, but in Christ, we have hope and grace. The gift is not like the trespass. The trespass of the one man (Adam) brought death, and now through Jesus’ righteousness brings life. Through one man’s disobedience, many were made sinners, through one man’s obedience many are made righteous. Were the law came to increase the trespass, grace abounded all the more. So, as sin increased, grace might also reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today I want to talk about how we can rejoice when we run into problems and trials. Now that sounds weird, but in vs. 3, Paul says we can even find joy in the hard things, the difficulties, and hardships. Why? Because God is at work, developing endurance, character, and hope in us. 1 Peter 1:6-7, and James 1:2-4 also say that we can rejoice in our problems because God is at work in them building our faith and character, perfecting us.

As we read from chapter three today there is a continuation of Paul speaking to the Jews regarding their practices of the Law, and God’s righteous judgments. Paul asks several questions at the beginning of this chapter. First of all, he says, what advantage is there to being a Jew? He said much in every way! What advantage do they have? Paul carefully explained in Romans 2 that the possession of the law or circumcision will not save a Jewish person. If this is the case, then what is the advantage of being “God’s chosen nation”?

What we read in Romans 2 today was Paul addressing their hypocrisy. They who were teaching, and bragging about the law, were actually dishonoring God because they were doing the very same things. In their criticism of the Gentiles and their uncircumcision, they break the law and act like they were never circumcised. Because as Paul was saying, a man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, or has circumcision if it is only physical. A Jew is one who is inwardly and also has circumcision of the heart or the removal of our flesh or fleshly, worldly desires, and sinful living. Jesus said, “Follow me”. He didn’t offer us a book of rules, but Himself. It’s all about relationships, not performance! We are following Jesus, not rules. Again in Matthew 23, Jesus takes aim at people who have confused following the rules with following Jesus. Seven times, He says, “Woe to you,” and corrects the misguided practices of rule-following religionists.

View Details

Today we are continuing our series in Romans. We are actually still just getting started and last week I spoke on the first 5 verses of Romans 2. In reality, from chapter 1 through the middle of chapter three Paul was writing just this introduction just to talk about sin and to get people to understand how sin affects us all, and we are all sinners in need of a Savior. Without God, we will fall into all kinds of wicked and evil practices.

View Details

In other words, God has a great desire to save people from sin and death and judgment. And so he acts in history to provide a gospel; good news, which if anyone will put their trust in it, they will be saved. Paul explains later, in Romans 3:24-26, what God has done in history, namely, he sent his own Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to live a perfectly righteous life and to die in the place of sinners so that all who trust him could be forgiven for their sins and have the gift of his righteousness and be freed from the fear of death and judgment.

Rudy Gonzalez, a former USMC Reconnaissance Marine and Police Officer turned Pastor, trains, equips and leads teams to seek and save those who are lost, lonely, hurting and afraid. It is their desire to move from a place of complacency to action so that the lost can be rescued and restored. They are a team of people that believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and his faithfulness. They specialize in rescuing those that are involved in Human Trafficking, and know that Jesus can set them free. They're willing to go into the high ways and by ways to rescue them, from doing surveillance, to digital searching online, to being able to communicate with them face to face, and partnering with others including Law Enforcement, loved ones, agencies, we will do whatever it is we need to in order to get them restored to Jesus and their families.

First, live with an eternal perspective.  As Christians, we believe that this life is not all there is. There is more!  We believe that history is going somewhere; we believe that there was a beginning and will be an end and that we are moving purposefully toward that end.  So we live with the end in mind—with an eternal perspective.

Jesus combines loving God and loving people.  In doing so, He summed up the Ten Commandments: the first four are about our relationship with God and the last six are about our relationships with people. No one had united these two ideas into one quite like Jesus had.  It was a new thought: all that God wants of us can be summed up by loving God and loving people.

There are probably many people in your life that prayed for you, spoke to you, witnessed to you, and shared God’s love and Word with you where you finally accepted Jesus. Even when we reject Him, He keeps coming after us. 2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but for everyone to come to repentance.

Jesus is more than we think, and in every part of this story, Jesus proved to be more than they thought, and he is more than we can imagine. When you think of Jesus, what do you believe and know about him? Sometimes people make Jesus out to be what they want him to be rather than who he is. He is always more.  There’s more!  There’s more to Jesus than what you know.

Then Jesus radically redefines greatness.  (vs. 43-44) Do you want to be great?  You must be a servant.  The Greek word is diakonos; it is the word for a paid servant, such as a table waiter; they serve voluntarily, of their own free will; they choose to serve. In Luke’s version of a similar discussion, Jesus asks the disciples…Luke 22:27 “For who is greater, the one at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.”

Unfortunately, the ancient world didn’t always teach this or think of children as blessings. Children were often seen as a nuisance. As the old saying goes, children should be seen and not heard. Also, if a child wasn’t wanted many would be killed or left to die. Sadly, many were left to die simply because they were the wrong gender—a girl rather than a boy. Disabled or disfigured children were abandoned.  Children were disposable. Then Jesus came.  He came as a child.  And He said things about children no one had said before, and a quiet revolution was started.

Immediately coming down from this mountain heaven on earth experience there is an argument and a demonic situation. Many in our world, including some professing Christians who don’t believe in the demonic, or Satan or hell as being literal, but I can assure you that it is very real. There are evil spirits that affect people. All demonic spirits have an assignment, and it is never the demon that is the main issue. The main issue is the sin that allows it or keeps it there. Undealt with sin, opens the door for the enemy, and our God is always greater and has provided freedom for our deliverance from these lies, and strongholds if we want it.

It’s bad when the high point of your day is before you get out of bed, and then it’s all downhill from there! Today we are reading from Mark 9 about a mountain top experience. This is the story of Jesus’ transfiguration and those that witnessed it. Then it is a good reminder that life does not always keep us up on the mountain tops but it also prepares us how to live in the valleys as well. We need to learn how to live well in the ups and the downs.

God made you all with a purpose. With your looks, your personality, your body and your mind, and everything about you. Even with what you may call your imperfections, flaws, etc. He made you perfect. Everyone. Christ created you for such a time as this for his purposes. He called you by name, drew you to himself, and saved you at the perfect time. His timing might not be our timing but it is always perfect. Never too late or too early. Christ also uniquely gifted you to serve in a very unique way, and gave you the faith to exercise those gifts and talents for His glory.

What happened in these two gospel accounts is really interesting! Mark tells us Jesus went to a house, and basically wanted to be left alone, but this woman fell at his feet begging him for mercy for her daughter who was demonized. Why her daughter was demonized in the first place makes me wonder what the heck was going on but that’s another story we will never know.

God’s command, first and foremost, is that we love Him and love one another. We are adept at making all kinds of excuses, including religious excuses, for not doing that. And, of course, that’s not the only command we work around. I wonder how many of Jesus’ commands I avoid, ignore or rationalize away. When we are so focused on the rules, we can easily lose sight of loving people. We must choose love over law.

First of all, following being sent out two-by-two, John the Baptist had just been beheaded, and so, Jesus took his disciples to a quiet place to get away, decompress, and debrief. Just like this week, it was Passover time, and thousands of pilgrims are flocking to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Jesus and His disciples are among the pilgrims arriving from the east, via Jericho, where Jesus had recently healed blind Bartimaeus. They are staying in Bethany, most likely with Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus, whom Jesus had just raised from the dead. It is quite possible that both Bartimaeus and Lazarus were with Jesus on their way into Jerusalem. Wouldn’t that cause quite a stir?
