Starting a business vs investing in a #franchise
Starting a business:
You'll typically have to deliver all aspects of the business from business development & client management, through to actually delivering whatever service it may be.
Investing in a franchise:
Depending on the franchise you may still have to deliver all aspects, but you'll have a clear path to follow and support from those that have been there before.
Some franchise brands will expect you to deliver the service. Others provide you with the delivery side as part of their offering. What if you don't have a background that in is the same sector?
Well in many cases it depends on what you can bring to the table and matching that up with the #franchise brand.
Take Phil Revill franchisee at it'seeze franchise for example.
His business Designs, Develops, Builds and Hosts #Websites, but before investing he was never involved in creating websites.
So how has he managed to make this business a 10 year success that he is now in the process of expanding into a new territory?

Creating a large, successful business is pretty rare!
It's no surprise when the odds are stacked against you from the start. You're on your own, there's no model to follow and the costs start stacking up along with the mistakes.
Investing in a franchise is one way to remedy this, as you have a built in peer network and a clear system to follow.
If you are going out on your own though it might make sense to invest in external support. Both of these avenues are very familiar to Kevin Brent, Founder of 4 businesses (2 sold) and Franchisor of BizSmart.
We talk about these topics in more details in this episode as well as:
The best RAF plane to fly
The pressures of walking in a large consultancy
Building for value
Creating recurring revenue
The power of peer working
Dealing with the peaks and troughs in earning

It's amazing what challenges in life people can overcome with the right support.
The franchise community is somewhere that you will find many inspirational stories, where people have come back from seeming insurmountable odds to find business success.
It's no surprise really as a franchise company is essentially a support network, driven to help you succeed.
We speak about this with Jen Chapman-Boffin in this weeks podcast as she shares her experiences from working within the British Franchise Association and now as a champion for mental health.
We also talk about:
Working for a franchisor
What is mental health
Cognitive Distortion
Improving mental health to improve profit
What a franchisor can do to support the mental health of their network

The solution?
Speak to the franchisees, speak to the support staff and get to know the people who will become an important part of your business.

There are no guarantees in business and investing in a franchise is no different.
However, You can reduce the risk by really getting underneath the skin of a business. Do the research and get to know their team. Get to know who they are looking for and what it takes to be successful.
Research the numbers as well, but just make sure that you know if you are a good fit for this business before you make any commitments.

Do you ever research other countries for holiday and discover that a location you've never considered before was actually ideal?
Most people spend hours, days or even weeks considering which holiday is best for their next trip abroad. It makes sense you don't want to get there and it be a massive disappointment.
It seems obvious, but the same logic should also be applied when researching which franchise business to buy into.
In other words don't focus on just one sector, a restaurant business for example. Broaden you search and keep an open mind about other sectors. There may just be the ideal business off the beaten track that suits you perfectly.
We talk about exactly this with Jimmy St. Louis, ex-NFL player and Founder of Franchise 123, who is today helping aspiring franchise owners narrow down their search and find the ideal business future.
We also talk about:
Taking a personal approach in business
Which sectors look to be successful in 2022
The relationship between sports and business
The need for sales in business ownership

It takes a months to develop a customer and seconds to loose them.
It's why providing a high quality and personalised service is so important in today's world, where we are all used to receiving personalised dashboards, news, shopping recommendations and Netflix movies!
Finding the best way to create this in a start up business, however can be a real challenge especially when there is a real pressure to secure revenue.
Buying in to an established, franchised business gives you you a template to follow and support from others who are also focused on making the brand successful.
We dive into this in more detail in this week's special episode featuring Tim Morris the Managing Director of sponsors to our podcast Cymphony.

Franchises within franchises
Exit strategies
The level of support given by franchisors
The biggest challenges faced by franchisees

What does success look like for you?
For many it's taking your private jet to your uninhabited island, where on the beach sits your luxury mansion with 3 swimming pools and a Lamborghini, Bentley and Aston Martin sitting in the garage.
It's not totally realistic for all of us though and it wouldn't even guarantee happiness.
Isn't that what success really is though?
You can find happiness in an employed position of course, but you can also find it in many other ways.
On this episode we speak with Matt O'Neil, who has found his own success in helping others to achieve their dreams through franchising.
We hear about his career journey in this episode and also speak about:
Taking on responsibility
The challenges of being a franchisor
What it's like to sell on a business
What a potential franchisee should look like
The comparison between baking a cake and franchising
What research you need to do before investing in a business or franchise

Start with "Why"
Why does the business exist?
Why do they operate in this way?
Why did they franchise?
By doing this you can learn whether a business or brand aligns with your own values.
It's vitally important if you're considering investing your own money into a franchise license. That's why learning Founder's stories should be an essential step you should conduct in your research while doing due diligence on a franchised brand.
We talk about this more with Simon Bartholomew, Franchise Director of Oscar Pet Foods & Non-Exec Director for the British Franchise Association, in the latest episode of #TheDisenfranchised.

The only person to never make a mistake is a person who does nothing.
If you want to build your own business you need to be willing to make mistakes, embrace them even. If you do you will learn far more than if you take too much caution over everything.

No one can make the decision for you.
To give up employment and start your own business takes guts.
There is always a risk attached to the decision.
You can eliminate some of the perceived risk by doing your due diligence, researching the market, speaking with your family and peers, but no one will ever make it risk free for you.
You have to make a decision and trusting your gut instincts is probably one of the best strategies you can take. We talk about this with franchising expert Julie Waites, who for over 30 years has worked within the franchising world helping business owners to grow and expand their businesses.
We also speak about:
Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs
Who to take business advice from
The most surprising business that Julie has helped to franchise

A "self-made" entrepreneur probably hasn't done it all on their own.

In this episode we speak with "self-made" entrepreneur Cheryl White, who not only has built her own successful business in the care sector, but has also helped many other people build and grow their own business too. She has worked with experts to achieve this and is now considered an expert herself.

YOU
Whether you are starting on your own or with a franchise brand it's true that it is important to have a good network around you, the right tools to execute your work and all the relevant processes, but ultimately your mindset is the most important element.
You need to hold yourself accountable and take action to achieve success.

We also talk about:
The career options available away from employment

Having a technical skill doesn't necessarily mean that you can start and run a successful business.
There are many other skills required that you need to effectively set up a business. Marketing, PR, sales, website creation, accounting, the list goes on and it means that not everyone can build a stable business on their own.
Lisa Raynes, Founder of Pride Road, talks us through how this issue manifests itself in an unstable market and how she found a solution for this problem.
We also talk about;

The impact of instability in a career
The importance of structure and processes

Being captain of your own ship is great, but if it's a large vessel, you're learning on the job in choppy waters and you've got no crew, it's not all going to be plain sailing.
It can be the same when you're starting your own business. If you have no support and you need to learn new skills like marketing and sales, the chances of success for your business are significantly reduced.
In this episode we speak about a solution to this challenge with Jane James, Founder & CEO of Little Voices, who risked it all to help others find a stable income for themselves by providing support and a clear path to success.

We also discuss;

Would you believe us if we said that there was a way to set up a business and earn money quickly?
Well, you shouldn't!
Even if you're buying into someone else's proven business model where they give you tools, support and guidance, there is no guarantee of success.
You will still need to be prepared financially, especially during the first year and be prepared to work hard to make the business work yourself.
Your working hours will also change and so will need to manage your efforts efficiently.
In this episode we talk with Rebecca Newenham, Founder and Franchisor of virtual agency Get Ahead VA, about both of these topics as well as
