The art of getting straight to the point. . . kind of.
Welcome to the Simplish Podcast, where we unpack complex topics weaving in our unique experiences and research making the every day more - Simplish.
Exercise for many people can be difficult, or even unpleasant to do. We live in a society where we’re constantly told we need to get in shape, lose weight and move if we don’t want to be lazy slobs. Yes, research shows that exercise is very beneficial, but so are a lot of things out there and we don’t do all of those. Exercise makes me feel tired, sore and shows me just how weak I am compared to “The standard”. Why is exercise so heavily pushed and why should I do it to begin with?

When it comes to working out or training, most of us are pretty good at figuring out the different body parts to work. One of the things that we tend to neglect but is just as important is working on our balance. Balance training or balance, in general, is one of those things that many people lack, but they don’t take the time and effort to build it up as much as they would some of these other aspects of training. While balance may be underrated or overlooked, it is an essential part of keeping you healthy and injury-free. I know we all joke about all the LifeAlert commercials and falling regularly but for many people, balance is the difference between walking off an injury or ending up in the hospital, so make sure to watch the entire video to learn some of the things that you can do to improve your balance so that you don’t end up falling on the floor. I didn’t want to see any of you in a LifeAlert commercial screaming for your life.

When I first started getting into fitness, I was excited but had more questions than answers. At the time, I was only about 14 years old, so a personal trainer was not in the cards. Most of the resources I had access to were articles and videos of people who I thought were credible because they were "Jacked.". Spoiler alert just because someone looks like they know what they're doing doesn't mean they do.
Having spent many years training and studying, I've gained a greater understanding of what's good advice compared to what's just great marketing. With the fitness industry growing quite quickly, people of all backgrounds have come into the limelight to share their "knowledge" with you, (This one secret will help you melt body fat, Doctors don't want you to know this one weight loss trick, etc.). While these headlines may be tempting, the reality is getting lasting results requires consistency and accurate information. One of the best ways to get on the right track is to work with an exercise professional. Like any resource, you have to know what to look for. Personal trainers are no different. You have to tell the good from the bad, so you don't end up wasting your time. To save you some of the hassles that come with trial and error, I've put together four of the things I believe every great trainer has.

It seems like everyone and their grandmother has grown an infatuation with building a bigger butt and strong legs. Now I hate to break it to people out there, but many of us melanin blessed individuals have always had this appreciation. Regardless of that fact, it's nice to see the rest of the world catching up. Aside from that cheeky remark, a strong lower body is foundational in improving everyday movement. Building a strong lower body isn't rocket science. It may not be the most fun, but it isn't impossible. All it takes is a little consistent effort and an understanding of which exercises offer the best benefits. When training the lower body, I always recommend people incorporate compound movements that are either unilateral or bilateral. The compound lifts engage multiple muscle groups, making them more time-effective than targetting individual muscles. Unilateral movements focus on one part of the body, so any lunge, step up or single-leg movement. These exercises help fix imbalances you may have in your squat, running or jumping. The improvements also help reduce your chances of injury. Bilateral Movements focus on using both limbs in any given exercise. These exercises are great at building maximal strength because you can produce more force with two legs compared to one. While there are many exercises you can use to train your legs, I find the fundamentals always seem to give the best results.

When it comes to lifting, the squat and the deadlift are some of the best Strength exercises. They're versatile and regularly used in sports programming and general training. You will commonly see strength athletes with extensive training squat and pull unbelievable numbers. For most people, the goal of lifting even half of these athletes' numbers is an ongoing journey. It's easy to look at these two exercises and think of simply pulling harder on the deadlift and doing more reps to get stronger on the squat as all you need to do. It's a shock to many lifters when they continue with the brute force approach and can't see their numbers moving or their form getting better. While doing more reps and learning to pull better does help improve your lifts, there are a few small tricks you can apply to improve your performance and make it easier to get towards that goal.

It's that time of year again. 2021 has come to a close, and this past year was an eventful one. Many monumental changes came without warning, and like most things in life, they came without question and kicked our asses. From this rollercoaster of a year, we grew a greater appreciation for the time spent with loved ones, the importance of frugality, and the importance of prioritizing our mental and physical health. Above all, we grew to understand that time is a precious commodity that we shouldn't waste.
Moving into January, the cliche of "New Year new me" is one that I think better applies to this year. People often throw this phrase around to try and give life to new habits, dreams and projects that only last a month or two before they end up in the resolution graveyard. This New Year, I feel the dramatic events we overcame fundamentally changed how we view the world and ourselves. I'm optimistic that these changes will help make 2022 a more productive and fulfilling year. While dreams alone won't make the New Year better, hopefully, these tips help steer you in the right direction.

Depending on who you are, cardio may be one of your favourite forms of exercise, or it may be one of the worst things known to man or woman. Regardless of where you stand, we all know we need to do it. The biggest problem is figuring out the quickest way to get it done and forget about it. If you're not the type of person that loves group classes and getting sweaty with strangers, finding the best piece of equipment to get your 20 minutes of hell over with is of the utmost importance. There are many different pieces of cardio equipment out there. Finding something practical, affordable, and effective is the hard part. In my opinion, two of the most used pieces of equipment for cardio are the Assualt/ Air Bike and the treadmill. The treadmill is commonly available in most gyms. It's easy to use and doesn't require much skill but burns quite a few calories. The Assault/ Air Bike has quickly gained popularity within CrossFit and even commercial gyms. The bike feels much more exhausting than a regular bike and gets both your arms and legs working, making it a full-body tool. Now, if you're still reading this, I'm assuming you're interested in finding out which piece of equipment is better, or you want to find a valid reason why you don't have to run to do your cardio. Regardless you're still here, so let's get it started.

If you've ever done a wall sit before, you know what it's like to be in hell. Those 30 seconds or however long you're holding feel like agony. In contrast, a few reps of squats, while they may burn, are much more bearable. If you were to ask most people, "What's the difference between these two exercises?" most would say one you hold and the other you move. You would be correct, but the answer isn't that simple.

If you've spent any amount of time trying to program your workouts or do any research into strength training, then you've come across articles and videos debating whether weightlifting or Callisthenics (bodyweight training) is more beneficial. Avid enthusiasts of each discipline will lecture you on why their variation is the best. Strength Training/ Resistance Training is the activity of using your muscles against resistance to create enough stress to make them grow in size and strength. Weight lifting is typically associated with strength training, but Callisthenics which, involves bodyweight movements, is just as effective. If you've been following me for a while, you know I believe every fitness discipline has its benefits, and a combination of different modalities is always the best way to have it all. The real question here is, what is the difference, and when do we know we're ready to move from one to the other?

Most of us take for granted how well we can move about in our daily lives. Whether we're walking, running, picking up groceries, or throwing a ball, our bodies are constantly performing various movement patterns without us even thinking about it. We learn many of these skills in our adolescent years. Sadly, many of us never build or develop these skills further. As we age, we slowly watch our physical literacy regress to our infant years, when we were clumsy, uncoordinated, and prone to falling. We sit back, reminiscing of the days when the simple act of running up the stairs was effortless. So what can we do? Money. Some people say it's the root of all evil and, some say it buys happiness. Regardless of where you stand, having enough of it makes life a lot easier. The big problem many of us face is not understanding proper money management skills. With a culture of frivolous spending, it's easy to get money and then have it leave the next second. But the good news is getting a better grasp of your finances doesn't require you to be an accountant. In actuality, it just takes a few simple changes. Healthy eating. Balanced diet. Organic. Free-range. Farm to table. With so many variations in price, product, and quality, food has become one of the most talked-about topics when it comes to health. We can all agree that eating healthy is a big part of building a healthier lifestyle, but it always seems to cost an arm and a leg. Wouldn’t it be incredible if we could eat real food, that actually TASTES GOOD without dropping half our pay-check?

We all know one person who's always busy but manages to keep everything together. No matter what comes their way, they always seem to have a plan. Typically, when we're thinking about this, it’s because we're procrastinating and putting off our projects and we want to be like THEM. So how do we change our own behaviours to be more like the people we admire? Essential to productivity is first being organized. The easier we can find things, schedule appointments, and remember all our passwords (I know there's a lot), the less stressful things become. For the most part, we all have a pretty good idea of what we need to do, the challenging part is the follow-through.

Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity. Simplicity is the key to living a less stressful and more enjoyable life. What is simplicity and how do we achieve it? Simplicity is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “the quality or condition of being easy to understand or do.". If we're all being honest, we know that we have a habit of making things more complicated than necessary. We start with simple tasks that we know how to perform and rather than executing them, we introduce hypothetical criticism and doubt towards our decisions. We might self-sabotage by creating villains and barriers out of an irrational fear of standing out. We all have our critics, and while their comments may bear some weight, it pales in comparison to our own negative thoughts.
The question is then, how do we fix this? The answer is simple – it's SIMPLISH
