What happens when the life you envisioned for yourself doesn’t happen according to plan?
On this live episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Dr. Marline C. Duroseau, affectionately known as “Dr. Mar,” for a deeply personal conversation about infertility, pregnancy loss, grief, motherhood, and the hidden struggles women can carry behind professional success.
Dr. Mar opens up about navigating infertility while building her career, losing her daughter Angel, and grieving more than a pregnancy—the expectations, timelines, and version of life she once imagined.
We’ll also explore her research on the lived infertility experiences of women in leadership roles and what workplaces need to better understand about women navigating fertility challenges while maintaining demanding careers.
Her journey ultimately became part of the inspiration behind her memoir, It’ll Happen By 30: A Relentless Journey of Faith | Delayed But Not Denied. We’ll talk about what happens when 30 comes and goes, life takes a different direction, and you have to redefine what success, motherhood, and fulfillment look like for yourself.
This conversation is about infertility, but it’s also about something many of us understand: grieving the timeline we thought our lives would follow and learning how to embrace the life unfolding in front of us.

Leaving an abusive relationship is often described as the end of the story. For many survivors, it's only the beginning of another journey—healing from what happened, rebuilding an identity, supporting children who experienced the trauma, and grieving the life they once imagined.
On this episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with domestic violence survivor and author Yolanda Cope for an honest conversation about what it really takes to break free from abuse.
Yolanda shares her experience of leaving her abuser, the impact domestic violence had on her children, and the misconceptions that continue to surround women who stay in abusive relationships. We also explore a side of leaving that isn't always discussed: grieving the relationship, family, future, and version of yourself you once believed you would have.
Yolanda also shares how she began separating her identity from what happened to her and how her journey is now inspiring her upcoming book.
This conversation isn't just about leaving. It's about what happens when survival is no longer the destination and you begin discovering who you are on the other side.

What happens between the moment of an accident and the moment a family is notified?
In this powerful episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Christine Olson, founder of T.I.F.F. To Inform Families First. After waiting six hours to learn that her daughter, Tiffiany, had been killed in a motorcycle accident, Christine realized there was a gap in the emergency notification system that no family should ever experience.
Tiffiany was only 22 years old. She was an organ donor. In her passing, she saved seven lives. But before that gift could even be processed, her mother was left waiting.
Christine shares how that devastating night led her to work with lawmakers, law enforcement, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to create a voluntary emergency contact registration system connected to driver’s licenses. Today, millions of Florida residents have an emergency contact listed, allowing law enforcement to access critical next of kin information quickly instead of spending six to sixteen hours manually searching.
We discuss:
• How emergency contact registration works
• Why notification delays happen
• The emotional toll families experience during that gap
• How T.I.F.F. has saved lives and protected families
• What you can do in your state to advocate for adoption
Tune in to hear how grief can become policy and how one mother turned heartbreak into protection for others.
Learn why registering your emergency contact takes only minutes but can make all the difference in a crisis. Like, share, and contact your representatives to help bring T.I.F.F. to every state.
Because you do not know you need it until you need it.

In this episode of Groove with Portia, I welcome Nicole for a deeply honest conversation about forgiveness, self-love, and healing after betrayal. Nicole shares her personal journey that began in 2013 after discovering her husband’s infidelity and how that moment changed the way she understood forgiveness, trust, and her own voice.
Tune in to hear Nicole explain how her search for healing led her through certifications, practices, and personal exploration before she realized that forgiveness was not about excusing someone else’s actions. It was about freeing herself. She introduces the Hawaiian forgiveness practice of Ho oponopono and shares how the four phrases I love you, I am sorry, please forgive me, and thank you became tools for self-forgiveness and self-compassion.
Learn why forgiveness is not a one-time decision but an ongoing process and how healing often shows up in the body through tears, release, and reflection. We talk about reclaiming your voice after emotional pain, taking small steps toward self-care, and why learning from experiences is more powerful than trying to forget them.
This episode is for anyone navigating betrayal, loss of identity, or the long road back to themselves. Nicole also shares how embracing self-forgiveness led her to publicly share her story, build her brand, and begin writing a book on forgiveness that will include a workbook. We close with an invitation to continue the conversation and a reminder that healing and growth are lifelong practices.

In this heartfelt episode of Groove with Portia, I welcome my former mentor, Dr. Lisa McGuthry-Gore for a deeply personal conversation about grief, faith, and finding love again after loss.
Lisa shares her journey following the passing of her husband, Donald, after 32 years of marriage, and how she found herself unexpectedly remarried six months later to a man she once knew in college who also shared the same name. What may sound unbelievable to some is a powerful testimony of trusting God, honoring grief, and allowing joy to return without guilt.
We talk about what it means to hold space for both love and loss at the same time. Lisa opens up about how she stays connected to her late husband through family traditions, memories, and daily reminders while embracing a new chapter of life. This conversation affirms that grief does not have a timeline and healing does not require comparison.
We also explore signs of comfort and guidance after loss, including moments of reassurance that help us move forward when fear tries to hold us back. Lisa encourages listeners to trust their feelings, move at their own pace, and honor what feels right for them.
Lisa also shares the work she is doing through the Sally Mae Thomas Entrepreneurship Foundation, which focuses on entrepreneurship education and training for youth and women. She invites those interested in connecting to reach out via email at SignatureEvents23@yahoo.com.
This episode is for anyone navigating grief, widowhood, faith-based healing, and the courage to love again.
In this episode of Groove with Portia, I open a heartfelt conversation about grief, memory, and embracing the inner child. Inspired by my own memories of watching Hocus Pocus with my mother, we begin by exploring how childhood moments can become anchors of comfort after loss.
I’m joined by Karena, as we share our personal experiences of losing our mothers and navigating the transition period that follows. Karena reflects on the passing of her mother, Charlene, and how grief has shifted from something heavy into something that allows both remembrance and joy to coexist. We talk about granting ourselves permission to move forward while still honoring the love that remains.
Our conversation expands into how grief and memory can live together without canceling each other out. We discuss staying connected to loved ones through dreams, intuition, family, and intentional practices that offer comfort and grounding. I also share a vivid dream involving my mother’s voice and presence, and how those moments continue to guide me.
We then explore the evolution of witchcraft, moving away from mystical ideas and toward a practice rooted in self-empowerment, daily intention, and nervous system regulation. Karena shares the inspiration behind The Witch’s Inn, which was born from her mother’s hospice room and her desire to create a warm, inviting space where women feel full permission to trust themselves.
We close with a conversation about everyday magic, finding gratitude in small moments, and creating meaning after loss. Karena also shares details about upcoming Tarot Coven gatherings, Reiki sessions, workshops, and the Devoted Woman Collective, a program focused on nervous system regulation and intentional living.
This episode is for anyone navigating grief, memory, inner child healing, and the courage to create meaning after loss.

In this powerful and necessary episode of Groove with Portia, I honor Human Trafficking Awareness Month with a conversation that many families live, but few feel safe enough to share.
I’m joined by Monica Estevez, a mother whose daughter survived human trafficking. Monica shares her family’s journey after her daughter was trafficked following connections made in New York in 2022. Despite widespread social media efforts and community support, her daughter was missing for over a year before finally being located and brought home.
Monica speaks openly about the reality that survival does not mean healing is complete. She shares the signs of exploitation many people overlook, the severe trauma her daughter experienced upon returning home, and the challenges families face when mental health care is refused or unavailable. We talk about hallucinations, violence, drug use, and the emotional toll placed on parents who are desperately trying to protect their child while honoring their autonomy.
This episode also explores the role of social media in reuniting families, the dangers young women face in certain environments, and the grooming tactics used to control victims. Monica emphasizes that awareness alone is not enough. Survivors need proper mental health care, medication, and long-term support, and families need education and community resources.
Throughout our conversation, Monica returns to faith as a source of strength and hope. She shares how prayer and persistence have helped her witness a slow but meaningful turnaround in her daughter’s life. Monica also speaks about using social media to connect with other parents and caregivers walking a similar path.
This episode is for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone who wants to better understand the hidden realities of human trafficking and the long road to healing that follows.
In this deeply moving episode of Groove with Portia, I welcome John Stewart Hill, founder of the Good Contractors List, for a raw conversation about grief, surrender, faith, and purpose.
John takes us back to 2011, a season marked by financial collapse, hopelessness, and a desire for life to end. What followed was a massive heart attack during one of the worst freezes in Dallas-Fort Worth history and a moment in the ICU that changed everything. As he was wheeled in, John heard a clear voice asking if he wanted to stay or go. That question became the turning point that reshaped his life, his faith, and his calling.
We talk about what it means to truly surrender when grief has stripped everything away. John shares how choosing to stay alive came with three simple prayers. To be remembered for doing good. To truly live. And to touch as many lives as possible. From that surrender, the Good Contractors List was born, a faith-led mission to protect homeowners, restore trust, and bring integrity into a broken industry with a 25000 dollar guarantee.
John also opens up about receiving a heart transplant in 2022 and meeting his donor’s family. The donor’s name was Christian Wachal, which means Watchman. A moment, John believes, confirmed his purpose as a protector and servant leader.
This episode is for anyone navigating grief, loss, depression, faith crises, or life after rock bottom. It is a reminder that purpose can rise from pain and that surrender is not weakness but the beginning of transformation.

Chronic pain affects millions of people, yet many are told their tests are normal and their symptoms cannot be explained.
On this episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Dr. David Clarke, president of the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms, to explore what happens when pain is generated by the brain rather than structural injury.
Dr. Clarke shares his personal and professional journey into neuroplastic medicine, including the moment that changed his career when he discovered that a patient’s severe gastrointestinal symptoms were rooted in unresolved trauma. We talk about how stress, anxiety, depression, and adverse childhood experiences can manifest as very real physical pain, even when scans and lab work appear normal.
We explore how neuroplastic symptoms show up in the body, why so many patients feel dismissed or misunderstood, and how validating someone’s experience is often the first step toward healing. Dr. Clarke explains his framework for identifying neuroplastic pain, the importance of looking beyond symptoms, and how emotional patterns can quietly drive chronic illness.
This episode also dives into groundbreaking research on neuroplastic recovery therapy, including long term studies showing significant and lasting pain reduction. We discuss why this work is gaining attention from healthcare systems, insurers, and medical schools, and why hope matters for people who have been told they must simply live with pain.
If you are navigating chronic pain, unexplained illness, grief stored in the body, or the emotional weight of not being believed, this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and a new lens for understanding healing.

In this deeply nourishing episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with the amazing Cornelia—a personal energy strategist and the creator of The Abundance Journal. Cornelia’s journey from electrical engineer to quantum thinker opened a portal to her own healing and now she’s here to share how her tools can help us all tune into the frequency of abundance.
We explore the powerful connection between gratitude and grief, how journaling can rewire our thoughts, and the importance of allowing ourselves to receive—especially when we’ve been conditioned to give. Cornelia breaks down the concept of personal frequency and how honoring our emotional states can help us shift our inner vibration.
As we discuss her new book and upcoming projects around feminine energy, Cornelia reveals the quiet but revolutionary strength in pausing, reflecting, and being present. She offers a 30-minute complimentary energy strategy session to help others reconnect with themselves, their intentions, and their deeper purpose. On this episode of Groove with Portia, I welcome Becca Pierce, former CEO of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange and author of a powerful new book centered on self-worth, identity, and life after loss.
Becca opens up about two defining moments that changed everything. The first was a very public career loss that left her grieving the identity she had spent years building. The second came fourteen months later when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and forced to slow down in ways she never had before. Together, these experiences led Becca into a deep season of grief, anger, faith questioning, and ultimately transformation.
We talk honestly about what it means to grieve versions of ourselves that no longer exist, including the loss of professional identity, physical ability, and certainty about the future. Becca shares how recovery challenged her belief that success equals achievement, especially when healing plateaued and progress felt invisible. She reflects on anger as a messenger, grief as a teacher, and optimism as a choice that had to be practiced daily.
This conversation also explores faith, silence, and the courage to listen when life is asking us to change. Becca shares how community support after surgery reshaped her understanding of success, why setting boundaries became essential, and how choosing time with her daughter over career validation redefined her priorities.
We discuss self worth beyond productivity, grief integration, emotional resilience, and the truth that love does not need to be earned. Becca also shares the story behind her book and her mission to help others release the lie that achievement determines value.
If you are navigating grief, identity loss, burnout, or a life transition that forced you to pause, this episode will meet you right where you are.

Welcome back to Groove with Portia. In this powerful episode, I open up about a recent moment with a medium who reminded me that living authentically is the real path to healing. Sarah joins me to talk about what it truly means to hit rock bottom and still rise with grace. She shares her journey from losing her job in a family business to launching Let’s Talk Supply Chain, building a 14-person team, and finding her purpose after grief. We discuss her grandmother’s passing, the symbolic meaning behind her memoir title, and how she used her voice to find healing in unexpected places.
We also explore how gratitude, identity, and letting go of perfection can help us rebuild. Sarah and I talk about the weight women carry—especially in leadership and male-dominated industries—and why reclaiming your power begins with self-awareness.
Whether you’re grieving a loved one, leaving a job, or just trying to rediscover your identity, this episode is your permission to evolve, to show up as you are, and to embrace progress over perfection.

This week on Groove with Portia, I open with a story close to my heart — a moment when unexpected jewelry reminded me of my uncle’s powerful words: “Let go. Let God.” It brought me back to gratitude, to presence, and to the divine ways signs show up in our lives when we need them most.
Then I sit down with Rachel Samani, founder of The Honest Jeweler, a woman who took her deepest personal struggles and turned them into soulful reminders of resilience. Rachel shares how her unique spinner rings helped her transform her inner critic into an inner coach, and how grief—especially walking through her daughter's loss of a best friend—became a bridge to deeper empathy, strength, and love.
Rachel’s brand isn’t just about jewelry. It’s about wearing your healing and remembering your power every time you look at your hand. From being present for her 14-year-old daughter in the depths of sadness, to learning that silence and holding space are often the most powerful responses—we talk about it all. We also touch on perfectionism, identity, leadership, and how grief reshapes your worldview.
She shares the inspiration behind her Naomi Ring, the process of engraving pieces on-site, and how every product she creates carries a story of overcoming. On this episode of Groove with Portia, I had the honor of speaking with Gladys DeClouet—executive powerhouse, author of A Layered Life, and a woman who truly knows what it means to lead during life’s darkest storms.
As I reflected on the wisdom passed down from my great-grandmother—whose birthday month I share—Gladys and I explored how our most personal pain can fuel our greatest purpose. Gladys opened up about a time when her world was crumbling: filing for divorce, her husband being diagnosed with colon cancer, and running a $2 billion business—all at once.
We talked about how so many Black women are conditioned to believe we have to “do it all,” and what it really means to let go, delegate, and trust others. Gladys shared the power of building strong, committed teams and why leadership is really about helping others grow—not doing everything yourself.
We also explored the intersection of grief and leadership, how AI is reshaping the workplace, and the mindset shift required to release control and embrace change. Gladys reminded me—and all of us—that delegation isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.

Grief doesn’t disappear after three days of bereavement leave—and for many of us, it lingers quietly in the workplace, where conversations about emotional pain are often avoided. On this powerful episode of Groove with Portia, I’m joined by Dr. Jennifer Levin, a nationally recognized grief expert specializing in sudden and unexpected loss, including suicide, traumatic death, and illness.
We talk about the emotional realities employees face when returning to work after losing a loved one. Jennifer explains how 25 percent of the workforce is grieving at any given time and how that grief often looks like anxiety, burnout, lack of focus, or quiet withdrawal. We also talk about why grief needs to be integrated—not managed—and how company leaders can create compassionate, grief-informed spaces without waiting for tragedy to strike.
Jennifer shares the framework behind her company, Traumatic Grief Solutions, and the five steps she teaches organizations to prepare for, respond to, and support employees navigating grief. We also reflect on what not to say to someone grieving and how offering specific help can make all the difference.
She also gives insight into her workbook and online course designed to help individuals heal from traumatic loss, currently available at 50 percent off using the promo code EARLYBIRD.

On this episode of Groove with Portia, I am joined by health and wellness practitioner Katy Gilberston for a heartfelt conversation about grief, gratitude, and the enduring presence of our loved ones. We begin by talking about relationships and how life transitions are often the backdrop for deeper emotional reflection.
Katy opens up about her late son Jaxon, who would have turned 21 this year. She shares how his memory lives on through photos, fridge magnets, and the uncanny way her youngest son, Fox, recognizes him. As the seasons change and the veil between worlds feels thinner, Katy and I talk about how fall, Halloween, and full moons bring up both emotional and energetic shifts. Katy explains how the body remembers, especially around dates like Jaxon’s birthday and angelversary, and how our grief often manifests physically.
We explore the power of presence after physical death. Katy shares the experience of feeling her son’s hand in hers, and I talk about sensing my mother’s embrace and scent. These stories aren’t just about memory; they are about connection. They are about knowing, deep in our bones, that love does not end. Katy also opens up about raising a child with Down syndrome and how becoming a parent transformed her in ways she never expected. She shares how her son’s five-year battle with cancer prepared her to support others in their transitions—including her grandparents.
This episode is a soulful reminder that grief is not the end of our story. It is often the beginning of rediscovery, of reconnecting with our inner child, our purpose, and our ability to feel joy again. Katy offers insight into the importance of asking for support, even when it is hard. From her husband’s cancer journey to her son’s heart surgery, she learned that vulnerability opens the door to healing.
We also talk about Katy’s upcoming book and her work with Hauora Wellness, Kalina Movement, and her monthly sound healing events. She is creating a transformation mentorship program to help others move through grief, illness, and identity loss. Katy embodies what it means to groove through adversity, and I cannot wait to have her back on the show when her book is released.

What does it mean to lose everything and still lead with love? On this episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Ron Ladner, a Hurricane Katrina survivor who transformed deep loss into a lifelong mission of healing. After losing his home and nearly all of his possessions, Ron and his wife made a powerful choice to stay in their community and serve. That decision birthed Shaggys, a waterfront restaurant built not for profit but to offer comfort and connection in the wake of devastation.
Ron opens up about the spiritual and emotional lessons he learned in the storm’s aftermath. He shares his belief that while God gives us tools and resources, it is our responsibility to make the plan. We explore how this mindset helped him rebuild not only his life but an entire company culture centered on people, not just profits.
With over 450 employees across five locations, Shaggys thrives by putting employee well being first. Ron talks about creating a home environment for staff, reducing turnover, and improving guest experiences through kindness and culture. He shares how his background in software startups influenced his leadership style, allowing him to simplify training and empower his team to serve with intention.
We also dive into the story behind his new book, Shaggys Cheeseburgers. The name pays homage to a restaurant from the 1940s that defied segregation, and today it symbolizes healing and unity. Ron explains how the cheeseburger became more than a meal. It became a metaphor for warmth, community, and comfort that brings people together, no matter their background.
Our conversation touches on the emotional weight of helping others when not everyone says thank you. Ron draws on the biblical story of Jesus healing ten lepers to reflect on grace, gratitude, and the importance of continuing to serve even when recognition does not come. We both talk candidly about the complexity of loving your neighbor while navigating the challenges that come with human relationships.
This is more than a story about survival. It is about creating a ripple effect of goodness in the world, starting with your corner of it. If you are a leader, a dreamer, or someone trying to rebuild after loss, this conversation will feed your soul.
You can learn more about Ron at ronladner.com and purchase his book Shaggys Cheeseburgers on Amazon.

When someone you love struggles with addiction, the entire family feels the weight, but what if recovery could run parallel?
On this episode of Groove with Portia, I’m joined by Lisa Katona-Smith, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and founder of Parallel Recovery. Lisa opens up about her personal journey through addiction as a mother, and how her family’s experience with ambiguous grief and emotional fatigue inspired her to create a new path toward healing.
We explore the concept of parallel recovery support, a family-centered approach to addiction recovery that empowers parents and loved ones to heal alongside the person struggling with substance use disorder. Lisa explains why the traditional recovery system often overlooks families, and how sustainable practices like boundary-setting, emotional detachment, and self-compassion are essential for long-term recovery and mental wellness.
If you’ve ever wrestled with questions like “How do I support a loved one with addiction without losing myself?” or “Can I feel hopeful again after years of grief and emotional exhaustion?”—this episode will give you the tools and inspiration to begin healing, for both your loved one and yourself.

On this episode of Groove with Portia, I welcome Gayle Petrillo, a burn survivor, speaker, and author who lived in the shadows of her scars for most of her life. Burned as a toddler, Gayle spent over 60 years covering mirrors, hiding behind clothing, and sitting on her hands to avoid being seen. For decades, she believed her scars made her invisible—until she chose to become visible.
Gayle opens up about how releasing her secret at age 68 unlocked a new chapter of self-love and advocacy. She shares the pivotal moment at a Beads of Courage fundraiser when she finally spoke aloud the words she had long buried. That night changed everything.
We explore the power of storytelling, the emotional toll of imposter syndrome, and how society’s ideals around beauty can make women feel ashamed of their truth. Gayle shares how writing her first children’s book became the doorway to healing, and how her smile became her power—braces and all.

Welcome back to Groove with Portia.Today, I sit down with Maggie Inrig, the Vice President of Innovation and Operations at Peer On Call, a digital mental wellness platform built around the power of peer connection.
We open by sharing what we’re both grateful for—me, for the gift of life after a near-death experience, and Maggie, for her health. The episode takes a thoughtful turn as we talk about grief—not just personal loss, but the hidden griefs that build up over time in high-pressure workplaces.
I open up about the third anniversary of my mother’s passing and how grief continues to be my greatest teacher. Maggie shares how Peer On Call was developed to support people in the workplace, especially those in high-stress professions like first responders and journalists. We discuss the importance of having options when it comes to mental wellness—because one size doesn’t fit all.
From anonymous peer support to educational resources, Peer On Call allows people to connect with others who’ve walked a similar path. Whether it’s watching a short video or having a conversation with a trained peer, Maggie emphasizes the power of choice and the importance of removing barriers to help.
We reflect on how traditional therapy isn’t always the answer for everyone. Sometimes, you just need someone who gets it. Someone who’s been there.
Maggie also talks about how her team is using data to help organizations understand the trends in their workforce’s mental wellness. And for those struggling with grief or burnout, she reminds us that healing can happen through the smallest moments—like a walk outside or sharing a story.
We wrap the episode with a nod to our shared grief journeys, the power of storytelling, and the importance of creating spaces where people can show up as they are.
This episode is for anyone navigating loss, burnout, or invisible weight at work. You’re not alone—and there are people and platforms ready to meet you where you are.

This week, I’m joined by Fran Pitre—a singer, author, and twin mom six times over—who opens up about a grief journey many experience but few speak about: infertility.
Fran takes us into the private, silent moments where grief grows: the tests, the waiting, the strain it puts on a marriage, and the ache of feeling betrayed by your own body. She speaks candidly about how depression, anger, and isolation showed up in the midst of her struggle to become a mother—and how she and her husband learned to give each other space, communicate with honesty, and protect their relationship through it all.
Her memoir, TWINS x3, began as a journal and became a blueprint of hope and faith. Over the years, it’s resonated with countless women navigating infertility, NICU struggles, and what it means to carry grief while keeping your heart open.
Fran also shares her creative process—writing while on three months of bedrest, remastering the book for its 10-year anniversary, and now turning that story into an audiobook. As a lifelong musician, Fran reminds us that healing comes in many forms—sometimes through music, sometimes through storytelling, and sometimes through quietly reminding someone else that they’re not alone.
This episode is for anyone who has ever carried invisible grief, questioned their faith, or felt like no one else could understand.

There’s something powerful about a woman who’s been shot—and chooses to keep her heart light.
On this episode of Groove with Portia, I sit down with Janine Powell Reid, a survivor, leader, and founder of Jones House of Refuge. Janine opens up about surviving a traumatic shooting that changed her life forever, her long road to recovery, and what it meant to fight for her independence again. But her story doesn’t stop there.
She shares how she moved through failed marriages, stigma around mental health, and the deep need to rediscover herself. Through her faith and a commitment to personal growth, Janine transformed her pain into purpose—creating a transitional home that helps single mothers rebuild their lives.
We explore what healing looks like when no one is watching, how community support becomes a lifeline, and why financial literacy and entrepreneurship matter deeply to her mission. Janine also shares her plans to expand Jones House of Refuge to support more families and children with long-term resources.
This episode is for anyone who needs a reminder that their story is still unfolding. Janine’s strength is a testament that your past doesn’t define your future—and every scar holds a lesson that can be passed on.

What happens when your life changes in an instant—and your confidence vanishes with it?
On this episode of Groove with Portia, I’m joined by Terry Healy, a speaker and upcoming author who opens up about his journey of rebuilding confidence after a disfiguring surgery at age 21. From feeling like the “elephant man” to developing unwavering faith and purpose, Terry shares the mindset and habits that helped him reclaim his life.
We also explore the power of unexpected moments—from strangers offering prayer in hospital rooms to parking lot encounters that shift perspective. Terry gives us a sneak peek into his upcoming book The Resilience Mindset, which dives deep into how adversity can strengthen individuals, teams, and leaders.
We wrap the conversation by reflecting on the importance of journaling, choosing positivity, and leading with empathy in diverse environments. This episode is a reminder that healing begins when we choose to face our pain with courage—and share our stories with the world.

Welcome back to Groove with Portia.
Today’s episode is about reclaiming power, purpose, and voice after unimaginable loss.
I’m joined by Lisa Council, a woman who has taken her grief and built a movement in honor of her sister, Linda, who was tragically murdered in a domestic violence incident over 30 years ago. For two decades, Lisa lived in a cycle of denial, anger, and survivor’s guilt—until she made a conscious decision to do grief differently.
Lisa shares how her healing began when she gave herself permission to transform the pain into purpose. From starting a nonprofit and hosting a podcast, to creating monthly community events and honoring her sister’s memory through action, Lisa has chosen to shift the narrative around grief—especially for Black women.
We talk about what it means to process loss over decades, how cultural expectations can silence our anger, and why healing is both intentional and deeply personal. Lisa also opens up about attending seven parole hearings for her sister’s murderer, and what it felt like when he was finally released this past September.
If you’ve ever questioned what justice looks like, or wondered how long it really takes to heal, this conversation is for you. Lisa reminds us that we can honor the past without staying trapped in it—and that healing isn’t about forgetting, but transforming.

Welcome back to Groove with Portia.
I’m joined by Dr. Cristi Bundukamara, known as Dr. B., who shares one of the most profound stories of pain, survival, and spiritual evolution I’ve ever witnessed. Dr. B. has endured the unimaginable—the loss of three children and her husband—and yet she still shows up in the world with purpose, compassion, and a fire to help others heal.
We talk about her “Mentally Strong Method,” born out of necessity when faith alone wasn’t enough to hold the weight of grief. Dr. B. opens up about how her spiritual beliefs have evolved, how she wrestled with anger, and why grief and trauma must be treated separately. She speaks from both lived experience and clinical expertise as a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
We also get real about the self-help industry’s anti-medication bias, the silence around spiritual conflict in therapy, and the way women often internalize pain—especially when navigating anger, depression, and the crushing expectations of faith communities.
This episode is a safe space for anyone who’s ever been told to “just pray through it,” for anyone navigating grief layered with spiritual conflict, and for those who feel like they’re barely holding it together.
If that’s you—this one’s for you.

On this episode of Groove with Portia, I’m joined by grief recovery mentor, photographer, and author Helen Fernald, whose book Love, Helen: Letters to My Mother came from years of pouring her heart onto the page. After losing her mother, father, and experiencing two miscarriages, Helen turned to writing as a way to release what couldn’t be said out loud. And through that process, she found her voice—and her healing.
We dive deep into how creativity can be a lifeline through grief. Helen shares what it was like to cry while writing, wrestle with anger, and find peace in remembering. We also talk about the pressure to hide our pain, especially as women, and the importance of making space for real emotion—without shame.
This conversation is an invitation to be honest with yourself about where you are in your grief and to trust that expression—whether through tears, writing, or silence—is powerful. Grief isn’t the enemy.
Sometimes, it’s the teacher.

What Grief Really Looks Like | Lynn Lewis on Losing Her Son to Suicide and Learning to Live Again
Welcome back to Groove with Portia. Today’s conversation is one I’ve held close for a long time.
I’m joined by Lynn Lewis, a grief educator, author, and mother who knows the depths of loss too well. In 2019, Lynn’s world changed forever when her son, Daniel, died by suicide. Since then, she’s made it her mission to break the silence around grief, mental health, and the taboo that still surrounds suicide.
We talk about what it really means to live with this kind of loss—the kind that never truly goes away, but transforms you. Lynn shared how she went from nearly drowning in sorrow to declaring she would live in honor of her son, not in shame. She gets honest about the dark moments, the nonlinear journey, and the grief bursts that still show up unexpectedly—even now.
Lynn also shares the metaphor that helped her process it all: navigating grief is like walking through a jungle—you never know when a lion (or a memory) might come charging in. But you keep walking.
We explore how crying is not weakness but a sacred release, and how important it is to give yourself permission to grieve in your own way, on your own timeline.
This episode is a safe space for anyone who’s ever been told to “move on,” anyone who’s hidden their pain behind a smile, and anyone who’s trying to make sense of life after loss. Whether you're grieving the loss of a loved one or supporting someone who is, this conversation will leave you with more compassion, more understanding, and more courage to simply be where you are.
Grief is not a linear path. But you don’t have to walk it alone.

Welcome back to Groove with Portia—and welcome to Episode 200! I never imagined this milestone would be shared with such a powerful voice for change, but the universe always aligns what’s meant to be.
In this episode, I sit down with country music artist Matt Rogers, whose new song Camouflage goes beyond entertainment—it's a lifeline. Co-written with his longtime guitarist and Army combat veteran Nick Reed, the song tackles the invisible wounds many veterans carry long after the war ends. What started as a form of therapy between two friends has become a movement to raise awareness about veteran suicide.
We get raw about the heartbreaking statistic that 22 veterans die by suicide daily—and that number climbs to 50 when factoring in substance-related deaths. Matt doesn’t hold back when sharing how frustrating it is to see veterans fall through the cracks after serving this country. And he’s not just writing songs—he’s giving back. All proceeds from Camouflage go directly to the Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation.
We also talk about what “camouflage” really means—beyond fatigues and uniforms, it’s the mask we wear to hide the pain. One lyric that hit both of us deeply: “Everybody knows soldiers aren’t allowed to cry.” That line alone says so much about the stigma around emotional expression in military culture—and the cost of staying silent.
Matt reminded me that healing isn’t just for the artist—it’s for every person who hears the message and feels seen. And when you feel powerless to make a difference? Matt’s advice: Just start climbing.
This episode is a reminder that music can be medicine, that grief can fuel change, and that sharing your voice can be the start of someone else’s survival.
Listen. Reflect. Share. Because someone in your world may be silently carrying the weight of it all.
