It took 15 ballots to elect Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican and until now the House minority leader as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. It was a historic contest with the most ballots cast since the tumultuous 1850s leading up to the Civil War. The speaker leads the house and is elected by the full membership.
