Where is Mabila (or sometimes Maubila)? There have been many searches for the site of the 1540 battle between the Spanish explorer Hernado de Soto and the Mabila Indians. Many believe it is in Clarke County but repeated searches have not found it in Clarke County or elsewhere. Now, Dr. Ashley Dumas, an archaeologist with the University of West Alabama have found evidence that may point to the site as being in Marengo County.
