Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I did a terrible job of telling you something this month. On February 8th the podcast celebrated its THIRD anniversary! Three years has gone by so fast, it's hard to believe. I appreciate each and every one of you for supporting this show.

As exciting as this anniversary is, I have to be honest - lately I'm noticing a feeling of being burned out. In the past, I would not have honored this feeling and would've kept pushing through. But as the saying goes, "when you know better, you do better" and I'm recognizing it's time to take a little break.

The podcast is not going away and in this episode I share more about the decision of taking a break. I wanted to acknowledge the break and give you the "why" behind it rather than doing what's known as a pod fade (going away without ever being heard from again).

This podcast has been an amazing outlet, allowing me to explore interests that lie outside of my 9-5. I'm excited to come back bringing the best energy I can rather than creating out of pressure that I put on myself (can you relate?!).

Thank you for supporting this show and I can't wait to be back with you again soon!

It can be an overwhelming feeling when a relationship has lost intimacy. It can be even harder to figure out how to get it back. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not as simple as having a weekly date night or scheduled sex on the calendar. We need to understand the type of intimacy we’re seeking (yes, there are different kinds of intimacy, not just sex) and be vulnerable to communicate those needs. But why does that sound so daunting?

In this episode my guest Daniela Stevens shares her insights on this vulnerable topic by helping us understand:

  • What intimacy means and the different kinds of intimacy in relationships
  • The impact of busy, fast-paced lives on intimacy in relationships
  • How conditioning and society has shaped our view of what intimacy is “supposed” to look like
  • What a sex practice is and why it might be right for your relationship

Be sure to check out the special gift Daniela shared for listeners of the Wake Up Call podcast episode here: danielastevens.com/podcast

Daniela Stevens (she/they) is a trauma- and attachment-informed certified Sex and Intimacy Coach for couples and individuals of all bodies and all expressions. She supports people to experience deep sexual connection and intimacy with themselves and their partner name by addressing the intersections of personal experience with multiple systems of oppression and by guiding them to clarify, connect, communicate, heal, and co-create the sex they want and the intimacy they desire.

I love personal development work and I'm guessing you do too (since you've found this podcast). Whether it's books, podcasts, and/or working with coaches, focusing on self-improvement can feel expansive and invite growth into your life.

But what happens when the excitement of personal development starts to fade? Your favorite podcast doesn't land anymore and you want nothing to do with yet another self-improvement book.

You know what I think this signals? You're building self-trust, which in my opinion, is the real goal of personal development work. To enter a phase of trusting yourself, your decisions, and your abilities.

In this shortie episode I talk about:

  • Maxing out on personal development work.
  • Taking a break is a great time to integrate the work you've been doing.
  • Podcasts, books, and coaches are great supportive resources NOT instruction guides on how to live your life.

Last year, the most listened to episode of the podcast was about how to calm yourself down when you are in an anxious state. This really stuck with me. It shows me how many of us are still struggling with anxiety and want to know how to feel better.

If you relate to this feeling, I want to let you know something - anxiety doesn’t have to control you.

When I was at the height of my experience with anxiety, I used to think I would never feel ok again.

In this week’s episode, I’m sharing some things I want you to know if you find yourself in this uncomfortable place.

Some things I unpack:

  • Sitting with the feelings and sensation of anxiety is uncomfortable but also your secret weapon to changing the dynamic.
  • Your body isn’t working against you by giving symptoms of anxiety. When you learn to interpret the signals, you start to see anxiety through a different lens.
  • Anxiety doesn’t “go away,” it will be with you in different seasons of life but how you relate to it makes all the difference.

I hope this episode serves as a form of encouragement to let you know what’s possible when you start working with your anxiety, rather than fearing it.

If you need support in calming yourself down if your anxiety is heightened, check out Episode 61.

It’s the new year and with that comes the chatter around goals, resolutions, and making big change in your life.

I don’t know about you, but the “new year, new you” vibe doesn’t resonate with me like it used to. In fact, I think it’s a bunch of bullshit blocking us from one of the most powerful energies for change out there: self-acceptance.

In this episode, I’m chatting with dietitian Kim Tasker, about what self-acceptance means and how it helps to expand who we are as a person, so we can stop chasing the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves.

Some things we unpack in the episode:

  • The impact of perfectionism, fear, and judgment on your goals and how it leads to a forced, rigid mindset.
  • What self-acceptance actually means (hint hint..it doesn’t mean giving up on yourself).
  • The connection between extreme goals and overcompensating for areas of your life where you feel lack.
  • How the nervous system and chronic stress influencegoal setting.

I hope this episode is a loving reminder that you don’t have to become a totally new person this year – the person you are is already enough.

Kim Tasker is an Intuitive Eating and Mindset Dietitian who is passionate about helping others build a relationship with themselves that is based in compassion, acceptance, and love. Kim’s takes a somatic approach to help women move from overwhelm to confident and clear-headed.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Liminal space is the transition time between where you were and where you’re going next. It includes emotional, mental, and physical transitions and seasons of life, and it can hold a lot of uncertainty.
  • When we’re in the liminal space, we’re naturally attracted to what feels familiar and safe. We might venture back into relationships, habits, or environments we’ve outgrown just to feel some certainty.
  • High performers tend to rush through transition periods out of anxiety or fear because they want the “achievement” of getting through it. Instead, let yourself sit in the uncertainty and take your time moving through it.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • You have to be honest with yourself when you’re in a situation where you’re miserable. It’s normal for relationships to have ups and downs, but when you start growing apart instead of together, you need to take a hard look at your relationship.
  • There’s a lot of confusion and shame that can come from getting divorced, and it’s easy to hide from the causes and then repeat that pattern in future relationships. Make sure you’re doing the work on yourself to be your freest, happiest self.
  • Sometimes leaving isn’t the answer, and instead you need to adjust some things in the relationship. Figuring out ways to infuse more joy and connection into your relationship beyond the occasional date night is crucial.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • The work culture we operate in can have a big impact on tying our exhaustion to our income. We start wearing exhaustion as a badge of honor and fear what will happen to our income if we prioritize rest and boundaries.
  • Listen to your body’s signals and don’t worry about how it aligns with the time of day. Denying yourself food when you’re hungry, sleep when you’re tired, or a bathroom break when you’ve gotta go is disconnecting yourself from your body.
  • There are some things we simply have to do, even if we don’t want to do them, like washing dishes or tedious admin tasks. But, we can reframe those actions as getting us closer to how we ultimately want to feel and spend our time.

Welcome to the 100th episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast! To celebrate, we’re premiering a new look, new intro and music, and a personal wake up call that’s been on my mind lately! In this episode, I’m sharing how I realized that two goals I’ve had on my list for forever were really just me forcing myself into a version of myself that isn’t actually true to me. Instead, I’m shifting those goals and releasing myself of the pressure to fit into those expectations.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • There’s been two areas in my life that I’ve struggled to make forward progress in, and it’s been frustrating as someone who’s an achiever and goes after what she wants. Releasing myself of these lingering goals has lifted so much weight off my shoulders.
  • I spent so much time and money on coaches and accountability partners, and it felt like none of the effort was getting me where I wanted. I started questioning if something is wrong with me, instead of questioning if these goals made sense for me anymore.
  • When we can learn to accept ourselves, we can tackle our goals and create the lives we want from a place of abundance, rather than a place of feeling like we’re lacking or aren’t enough as we are.

If you’ve ever tried to make a change in your life, but felt stuck and unsure of how to move forward, there’s probably a part of your identity that’s causing that resistance. In this episode, I’m joined by Katie LaCelle to chat about Internal Family Systems - or IFS for short - which is a therapy modality that helps us get curious about all the parts of ourselves to make lasting change and regulate our nervous systems.

Katie LaCelle is a somatic IFS practitioner who is passionate about helping people uncover their own internal wise leaders and reconnect with their deepest embodied intuition. IFS, or internal family systems, is a trauma-informed therapy modality that can help you get present, rewire your brain, and regulate your nervous system. In her spare time, Katie coaches circus and performs on the flying trapeze.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Internal Family Systems - or IFS - is a process of getting familiar with all the different aspects of your personality, getting curious about the patterns we follow and how we learned those, and what we want to do differently moving forward.
  • We all have different parts or subpersonalities of ourselves, such as “the perfectionist,” “the scientist,” that can conflict with each other. It’s important to practice “unblending” from those parts so no single one of them is running the show.
  • Some ways to identify these parts of yourself are to ask yourself: what is keeping me up at night? When do I put too much pressure on myself, and where does that come from? What makes me feel ashamed, and what’s my reaction to that feeling of shame?

After my episode with Matt Thieleman about life coaching versus therapy, I got a lot of great questions about taking those first steps to find a therapist. Therapy is such a great way to work through blocks in your life and learn healthy coping mechanisms for anything you’re struggling with, so in this episode I’m sharing the first steps you can take if you’d like to try therapy, and what to expect from those first few sessions.

Products or websites mentioned:

  • Listen to Ep. 93: What Is a Coach? Coaching vs. Therapy with Matt Thieleman
  • Psychology Today - Click the “Find a Therapist” tab and enter your location

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • It’s so important to address the things that are making you feel stuck in your life, or that are preventing you from fully enjoying your life. For me, therapy has been a great tool to help me face those things head-on.
  • Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but there are ways you can narrow down who you want to meet with. After you find some therapists you might want to work with, get on an introductory call with them. Gauge their vibe, how you feel talking to them, and get to know them a bit.
  • If you get through the first few sessions with a therapist, and it doesn’t feel right, remember there are SO many providers to choose from! Don’t abandon therapy altogether, instead find another therapist until you find the right match.

Raise your hand if you’re a member of the Recovering People Pleasers Club (my hand is in the air!). In this episode, we’re joined by Sara Bybee Fisk, a Master Certified Coach and Instructor who teaches women how to tame the rampant people pleasing, perfectionism, and codependency that is causing them so much frustration and resentment. Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • From the time we’re born, we learn that pleasing our caregivers helps us get our basic needs met, making pleasing people second nature. If you’re socialized as a female, you are taught even more expectations to please everyone around you for acceptance.
  • The hypervigilance of trying to anticipate and meet others’ needs and wants is so exhausting. If you’re a chronic people pleaser and also burnt out and anxious, you might notice some of that exhaustion going away as you release the need to people please.
  • When you feel the urge to people please, sit with that feeling of anxiousness. Take deep breaths, embrace the feeling without acting on it, and start building that muscle of sitting with discomfort.

Have you ever felt a shift in how your body feels when you’re experiencing a particular emotion? Sometimes you might experience sensations or pain in your body before you recognize that you’re feeling a particular emotion, and that’s what this episode is all about. Lisa Gilliam, a certified Emotion Code Practitioner, Holistic Nutritionist, and Nutrition Response Therapist, joins us on the podcast to teach us how to release these trapped emotions so we can feel better in our body and mind.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • You might notice that you hold emotions in different parts of your body. Maybe your shoulders feel tight and tense when you’re anxious, or you feel like you’re quick on your feet and can’t sit still when you’re happy or excited.
  • Some symptoms that you have emotions trapped in your body are a short fuse (trapped anger), total apathy (extremely guarded emotions), or other strong feelings that are holding you back from doing what you love.
  • Emotion Code is a modality founded by a chiropractor that involves moving emotions through your body to release those feelings. It can help with pain relief, getting “unstuck” from something holding you back, or working through grief.

If you’ve been listening to Wake Up Call since the beginning, you know there are a handful of intentional habits I utilize to manage my anxiety. In this episode, I’m giving a quick overview of my top three anti-anxiety habits, AKA my holy trinity, and how you can incorporate them into your own daily routine.

Products mentioned:

  • Oura Ring
  • Eight Sleep

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Limiting my caffeine intake has been huge for managing my anxiety. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it can initiate that buzzy fight or flight response without you even realizing it.
  • Alcohol intake can have so many negative effects on the body, and heightening anxiety is one of them. Then it leaves you feeling more tired the next day, causing you to reach for more caffeine. It’s a vicious cycle!
  • When it comes to sleep, focus on quality over quantity. Yes, you need your 8 or so hours a night, but if you’re tossing and turning all night, you’re not going to feel rested. Look into tools like the Oura ring to measure and track your sleep.

There are some changes coming to the Wake Up Call Podcast… and they’re all good things! This week is a casual chit chat (with a fired up moment in the middle for flavor!) about the new changes coming soon and my ultimate goals and intentions for the podcast. Thank you so much for being a listener of the show, I can’t tell you how much it means to me! If there’s a particular episode of the show that really resonated with you, I would love it if you sent me a DM on Instagram to share it with me!

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Anxiety was just the tip of the iceberg for me. My physical symptoms from anxiety were caused by everything under the surface: behaviors that weren’t serving me, perfectionism, and the need to hustle and overachieve.
  • I want this show to be a place where you hear perspectives that help shift the way you look at your anxiety and struggles. My hope is that you feel a sense of community because you are not alone in those challenges.
  • Finding out who you are, what you love, what your desires are, and what you want, is one of the most important journeys you’ll ever embark on. It’s important to be curious so you’re always discovering new things about yourself.

Joining me is Matt Thielemen, a transformational coach, visionary, speaker, advisor, and author.

  • This is Coaching: How to Transform a Client’s Performance, Life, & Business as a Master Coach & Warrior of Love

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • One way to think about the difference between therapy and coaching is processing the past vs. working towards your future. If you struggle to live a normal life due to trauma, therapy is your best bet. If your life is okay but you want more, a coach would be a great support for that!
  • Coaching is a great way to hold dedicated time and space to achieving your goals. They create a safe space to talk through what’s holding you back and how you can propel yourself forward.
  • One of the benefits of coaching is having genuine human interaction when so many of our day-to-day interactions feel very transactional. One of the reasons Matt shares for the surge in new coaches is a need for empathetic connections with others.

If you’ve ever thought “meditation is not for me, I can’t do it,” you are not alone! Even our guest and energy expert Rachel Hatteberg Walt felt that way until she developed practices that are practical, grounding, and relaxing. I know we can all use more of that in our daily routine, so in this episode, Rachel is busting some meditation myths so you can find your zen in ways that fit your unique lifestyle and preferences. After you listen to this episode, you can grab Rachel’s meditation library here.

Rachel is a comPASSIONATE and creative soul that thrives on alone time but can’t survive without her loved ones, the outdoors, and following her curiosity. She is one that gets stuff done but also stops to notice the birds in the trees (especially the two owls that live in her backyard!). She is a mom of 3, Speech-Language Pathologist, Meditation Teacher, Reiki Master, OBSESSED with Human Design, and Founder of Craftingood where she is supporting people in changing the world from the inside out.

Some key takeaways about meditation include:

  • An easy intro to meditation is simply bringing awareness to your senses when you’re doing a task. If you’re washing dishes, bring awareness to how the warm water and bubbles feel on your skin, or how the soap smells. This mindfulness can instantly calm your body and mind.
  • Keep a notepad near you or keep a running list on your notes app of all the random thoughts that you’re holding onto. Maybe it’s a to-do list item you want to remember, or anxiety you’re having about an upcoming project, capture it so you can quiet your mind.
  • When you find yourself feeling stressed and anxious, place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly. Take a deep breath in and feel which hand is moving more. You want your belly - not your chest - to be filling up with air, so focus on your breathing until you feel the hand on your belly moving in and out with each breath.

“Nothing worth having comes easily,” is a phrase we’ve all heard many times before, but does it always ring true? In this episode, I’m exploring an idea that came to me about letting things be easy. We all have natural gifts and strengths, brilliant ideas that come to us in the shower, and even great opportunities that seem to fall into our laps. I think it’s time we really lean into these and let ourselves embrace what’s easy.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • We’re raised to believe that the only way to get what you want is to work really hard. While that’s important, it’s also possible that leaning into the ease of your natural gifts and strengths can also get you what you want in life.
  • When we think everything needs to be difficult to yield results, we tend to overthink our ideas and get into a cycle of analysis paralysis.
  • Commitment and dedication are the new “working hard.” Be committed to the things that feel fun to you, the brilliant ideas that come to you, and your natural skills.

Have you ever felt upset or disappointed, then tried to talk yourself into happiness by saying “but I have so much to be grateful for?” In this episode, I’m writing you a big, shiny permission slip to stop minimizing your feelings - it’s ok to not be happy all the time! Our emotions are a powerful tool that tell us what we need in that moment, so instead of explaining them away, let’s name and validate those feelings.

Resources mentioned:

  • The Feelings Wheel

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Don’t deny or judge your feelings. You are allowed to feel however you feel in any situation. Sometimes emotions are scary or ugly, but when we allow ourselves to have those feelings, they’re temporary and pass pretty quickly.
  • The goal isn’t to be happy all the time, it’s just not realistic. You can find a middle ground or neutral state when you get more comfortable with all of the emotions, not just the extremes. Moving from angry to neutral is so much easier than moving from angry to happy.
  • There are so many feelings we could be experiencing in any given moment, not just “good” or “bad” or “happy” or “sad.”Familiarize yourself with the Feelings Wheel. Having a name for the feelings we’re experiencing allows us to embrace and express our feelings instead of wasting our energy trying to push them away.

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. If you’re a longtime listener of this show, you’re probably - like me! - a big fan of personal development content. But in this episode, I’m sharing how personal development work can be a slippery slope. Working on yourself is an admirable goal, but I’m learning that not only is it okay to sit and be happy with where you are today, it’s a necessary step to our overall growth and development.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • If you’re finding yourself bored or uninspired by personal development content, listen to what your gut is telling you. Watch a reality show, listen to a true crime podcast, or listen to music instead of educational content on your daily walk.
  • Bring some lightheartedness into your daily routines that are usually full of relentless hustling. Play and laughter are important and allow us to relax, unwind, and not take ourselves so seriously.
  • There is nothing wrong with you, and you don’t need to be fixed. Give yourself a break from the idea that we need to constantly grow and develop in order to be “better.” You are good enough just as you are.

As women, we feel an immense amount of pressure to stay forever young. If you are anything like me and considered injectables, like Botox, this episode is for you. My hope is that this conversation exposes you to information that shows you a different side of a very popular anti-aging treatment so you can make your own decisions based, in fact, not on pressure. I think so often we’re told Botox is safe, but my guest Gretch Elizabeth exposes the dark side of it with a very personal story.

Gretch is a former high school human sciences teacher, beauty educator, and has obsessively studied botulinum toxin for over 7 years. Gretch’s devotion to studying botulinum toxin is stemmed from an experience seven years ago when her sister acquired botulism from cosmetic Botox. Gretch now works full-time as a patient advocate for people who have experienced Botox injuries.

I’ve shared on the podcast before that I’ve struggled with emotional eating, and I know I’m not alone. In this episode, Stephanie Mara Fox, a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor, is sharing her expertise on how we can tune into our body’s cues to break our patterns of emotional eating while still giving ourselves comfort and safety. If you struggle with turning to food for comfort, this is the episode for you!

Stephanie Mara Fox, MA, CMBEC, CHC, CYT, is a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor with a Master’s Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy. She is the creator of Somatic Eating®, a body-oriented, sensation focused therapeutic approach to eating. She’s supported women, coaches, and wellness professionals all over the world, helping them to heal from disordered eating patterns, binge eating, emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image concerns.

Check out my anti-anxiety and meditation journal, “Bring Your Shit to Light: You deserve more than what your limiting beliefs are telling you!” on Amazon!

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • “Somatic” means relating to the body as distinct from the mind. While a lot of remedies focus on our thoughts first, somatic practices have us pay attention to sensations in our bodies to tune in to what it might be telling us.
  • If you’re stuck in a pattern of emotional eating, recognize that you’re looking for safety in a time of stress in your body. Don’t judge yourself or beat yourself up. Instead, look for other ways to give yourself that feeling of safety that isn’t food related.
  • As you’re working through healthier coping mechanisms, you might feel some grief for your old source of comfort, and that’s okay! Recognize that it did help you feel safe when you needed that, and have compassion for your inner child.

It took most of my life, but I’ve finally learned the importance and power of using my voice. My thoughts have value and so do yours. That’s why I’m excited to talk to Erin Galloway, the sweet soul who helped me bring my words to light in my new journal.

Erin’s entire career has been focused on behavior change and how small choices add up to have a big impact. Through Habitize Publishing, a self-publishing company started with her elementary-aged daughter, Erin helps to elevate the voices of those who only dreamed of writing "published author" next to their name. Erin finds joy in helping people realize they are capable of more than they think they are.

We’re celebrating two years of the Wake Up Call Podcast! Starting this podcast has been a long-time dream, and I’ll be honest, it took me a long time to start this show. Do you want to know why? Limiting beliefs. I sat on the sidelines because I was stuck in the belief that I wasn’t good enough. I watched other people do what I wanted, but I didn’t think it was possible.

In this episode, we’re digging into limiting beliefs and how you can start calling them out. Because if left unchecked, limiting beliefs will shape the way you view yourself and keep you from reaching your true potential. I don’t want that for you; it’s time to start calling out the limiting beliefs standing in the way of you creating the life you want and deserve.

In this week’s solo episode, I’m talking about relating to and managing your stress. As you know, there is no shortage of stress in our lives from work, school, kids, family, and the world. The question I want to ask you is, what are you doing with your stress?

I have a suspicion that a lot of us are muting our stress, rather than managing it. If you are muting, you spend a lot of time numbing and detaching from your body and emotions. The impact of this causes you to waste hours of your week!

Here’s what we’ll talk about to help you get those hours back:

  • How to start tangibly thinking about stress so that you can release it from your body.
  • How to evaluate when you experience a change of state and then recreate it.
  • How to experiment and find a groove of what feels good, what's realistic, and what's working.

In this week’s solo episode, I’m sharing how I changed my relationship with discomfort when I was experiencing really hard moments with my anxiety. While it’s really easy to seek out ways to numb our feelings when we’re uncomfortable (you might not even realize you’re doing it!), it’s so important to acknowledge uncomfortable feelings rather than avoid them. That might sound scary, but I will walk you through the coping process so you can peacefully work through discomfort.

Some key takeaways to change your relationship with discomfort include:

  • There are a lot of things we immediately reach for to ease discomfort: social media, food, alcohol, etc. What would happen if we allowed ourselves to sit with discomfort rather than numb out on something else?
  • Instead of looking for a distraction when you’re uncomfortable, sit with your feelings and name them. Are you feeling anxious? Is your heart suddenly racing? Are tears filling your eyes? Stating what you’re observing in your emotional and physical feelings lets you be an observer and create some separation between yourself and the event.
  • Start to practice what grounds you to disrupt your default response to comfort. Try taking some deep belly breaths, placing your feet flat on the floor, or whatever can calm you down long enough to acknowledge your feelings and then let them pass.

Are you someone who has a difficult time when it comes to forming habits? Is your inner critic telling you you’ve failed when you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted to in your day? If that’s the case, it’s not the truth! We’re all unique people which means we all have different styles of forming habits. In this episode, I had a conversation with Erin Galloway, a habit master, about creating habits, understanding your signature system, and the best approach to sustaining healthy habits in your life!

Erin Galloway’s entire career has been focused on behavior change and how small choices add up to have a big impact. Much of her work has been in supporting families, communities, and schools in building healthy environments that lead to long-term, multi-generational wellbeing.

Erin is inspired to spark curiosity in people of all ages, stages, and abilities. Through Habitize Publishing, a self-publishing company started with her elementary-aged daughter, Erin helps to elevate the voices of those who only dreamed of writing "published author" next to their name. Erin finds joy in helping people realize they are capable of more than they think they are.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Developing healthy habits is important. Think of habits in a positive sense. Habits improve our quality of life and can help with healing and serve us in a wide variety of ways.
  • We often don’t have compassion for ourselves when forming new habits. It’s important to give ourselves patience and grace. Try using the “Good, Better, Best” system. Come up with 6 habits that make up a “best” day and wind it down from there. That way, if you accomplish 2 habits in your day, it’s good. If you accomplish 4 habits, it’s better. If you accomplish all 6, it’s the best!
  • Be realistic. Everyday is not going to be perfect. Give yourself space to be human. Everyone is different so create habits that work best for you to set yourself up for a successful day!

Don’t think you’re affected by diet culture? Think again. If you’ve ever stepped on a scale and didn’t like the number or thought “carbs are bad,” then you’ve been affected by diet culture. Diet culture is not just physical but also mental, tying a disproportionately large amount of self-worth to appearance. But it's more than that… It affects our beliefs, which ultimately drive our behavior. In this episode, I chatted with Lauren Balterman about diet culture, how to unpack it, and bring about your best self.

Lauren Balterman is a Licensed Counselor, Certified Personal Trainer, certified in NLP, and holds an advanced degree in nutrition. She has been helping transform women's minds and bodies for a decade. Her mission is to guide and support women to become the greatest and most fulfilled version of themselves through mindset work, nutrition and physical fitness.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Diet culture is more than just ads for fad diets. It’s the sum of all the messaging we receive about body image, our value as it relates to food, and misinformation about food and exercise.
  • Get inquisitive. Be your own detective and start seeking your own truth. Dig deep and figure out where your behaviors stem from and what’s actually true about nutrition and exercise.
  • Health is more than physical; it’s mental and emotional, too. Your behavior stems from your deeply held beliefs, which can then be reinforced by our behaviors. We need to examine these beliefs in order to change our behavior.

So many women live their lives according to the boxes we’re supposed to fit into: buttoned up, nurturing, doting, overly generous, or agreeable. But what if there’s a part of us that doesn’t fit into those boxes? Chances are, most of the time you might not fit into the persona others expect of you, and in this episode, Sheila Anne is here to introduce us to our inner wild woman. If you’ve been wanting to live and present yourself more authentically and unapologetically, this episode is for you!

Sheila's mission is to help ambitious women thrive in body, mind, and soul. She supports clients and groups in making whole-person change by holding space for their unique experiences, offering new perspectives, and intuitively integrating healing modalities. She also hosts events and retreats! She is a Trauma-Informed Certified Coach, Whole Person Certified Coach, ICF Professional Certified Coach, and Yoga Instructor.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • People pleasing is one of the ways we suppress our inner wild woman, or our inner knowing. People pleasing is not a character flaw that we should be ashamed of, it’s a survival tactic we picked up from our very human need to be liked and to belong.
  • Getting back in touch with our inner wild woman means recognizing and communicating our needs. What does your “hell yes” feel like in your body and what does your “hell no” feel like?
  • What’s something you’re passionate about or something you love that you don’t make time for right now? Maybe you used to play a musical instrument, or you want to volunteer for a cause you believe in.

Are you curious about energy healing, chakras, and how they’re connected to our physical and emotional health? In this episode, our now three-time guest Rachel Walt is joining us to share her expertise and learnings about chakras as a Reiki healer. From which physical and emotional symptoms are tied to which chakras, to what you can do to ease each of these symptoms, this episode has everything you need to go from off-balance to energized!

Rachel Walt is a compassionate (emphasis on the passionate) and creative soul that thrives on alone time but can’t survive without her loved ones, the outdoors, following her curiosity and Indian food. She is one that gets stuff done but also stops to notice the birds in the trees (especially the two owls that live in her backyard!). She is the Founder of Craftingood where she partners with families to change the world from the inside out through coaching, energy work, & supportive products.

Some key takeaways on energy work and chakras are:

  • Energy shifts and changes as it moves through our body. Chakras are energy centers throughout the body that let us know when there are imbalances or blocks in our bodies from a physical, emotional, or spiritual perspective.
  • There are so many ways to bring balance to the various chakras, but you can get started through yoga, breathwork, and spending time in nature. Each chakra has more specific practices for bringing balance, but start small and build those rituals!
  • Learning about the chakras gives us an opportunity to listen more closely to our bodies. When we’re feeling physical or emotional symptoms, you can ask yourself: what is my body trying to tell me?

When you hear the familiar “whoosh” or “ding” of a notification on your phone from an email or Slack message, do you get a hit of dread and a sense of urgency? You are definitely not alone. If you’re struggling with a constant need to be productive and on-call all the time, this is the episode for you! Our guest, Jessica Lackey, is here to talk us through the concept of intentional seasons of work and rest in our lives so we can prioritize peace over productivity when life calls for it (which is whenever you want!).

Jessica Lackey is a Feminist Strategy and Operations Coach and Consultant for soul-centered entrepreneurs and small businesses. She combines her deep experience in strategy consulting, Fortune 500 operations leadership, and a coaching and somatics practice to radically transform you and your business. She offers group programs, 1:1 consulting, and Fractional COO services. Jessica is an ACC Certified Coach and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. • Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman

Some key takeaways from our conversation are:

  • The need and drive to be productive isn’t just personal or individual. It’s deeply embedded into our social systems that productivity is where our value comes from, and that rest doesn’t need to be a priority. It’s not just you!
  • Set boundaries around email and when you’ll be checking it. Let people know they can call you if it’s an emergency. If it appears constant, urgent communication is mandatory in your job or career, consider making a switch for your well-being.
  • So many industries are examples for us to learn about seasons of activity vs. rest. Athletes don’t train at a high level all year round. They train to prepare to compete, and then they have an off season of conditioning and rest. Our own lives can benefit from the same intentional seasons.

Some key takeaways on breathwork are:

  • Breathwork is an active healing meditation that involves intentional inhaling and exhaling. It can be used for trauma healing, energy management, and creative recovery.
  • If you have anxiety, you might notice you experience shallow breathing often, which is one of our body’s ways of avoiding certain feelings. Deep breathing brings those feelings to the surface, which is so crucial for healing.
  • Breathwork can also bring up physical reactions to your emotions, and it’s important to pay attention to any resistance to those physical reactions. You might want to cry, scream, or laugh, and any and all reactions are valid.

Are you struggling with anxious thoughts, overwhelm, and overthinking, yet from the outside you’re seen as a hard working, high achieving, go-getter? High-functioning anxiety may be what’s driving you and it’s a one-way ticket to burnout.

In this week’s episode of the Wake Up Call podcast, Tati Garcia, a licensed professional counselor and coach, is sharing the signs of high-functioning anxiety, where it comes from, and how you can start working through the symptoms for more peace and self-compassion.

Tati Garcia is a Licensed Professional Counselor and coach specializing in high-functioning anxiety and the host of the podcast Calmly Coping. Her passion lies in guiding ambitious achievers to overcome anxiety and burnout so they can feel calmer from within and stop overthinking everything. Tati has thousands of hours of experience helping clients and uses evidence-based approaches including mindfulness, self-compassion, and positive psychology to help high-achievers make improvements in their mindset, self-care, and work-life balance.

Some key learnings about high-functioning anxiety are:

  • High-functioning anxiety can present itself in a variety of ways. You might be really harsh on yourself and not allow yourself to rest, feel fear of missing out on opportunities so you never say no, and put your own needs last to put others’ needs first.
  • In school, you learn exactly what you need to do to get positive feedback and praise from your work and achievements. As adults with high-functioning anxiety, we don’t have that built-in feedback loop and chase it constantly with perfectionism and overworking.
  • Check in often with how you’re feeling. Give yourself permission to rest, recharge, and say “no” to things that are going to drain your energy. Just taking small breaks throughout the day, enjoying your coffee in silence in the morning, or going for walks are a great start.

If you find yourself rushing into action in response to an email, a social media post, or some sort of external stimuli, you might be letting fear or comparison take the driver’s seat. It’s a really easy cycle to get into, and in small doses these external factors can be good motivators. But if you find yourself in frantic reaction mode often, this episode has some tips and tools to help you pause and find more clarity so you can respond with ease.

Resources mentioned:

  • The Feelings Wheel from the Calm app

Some key takeaways from this episode are:

  • Pay attention to moments where you spring into action in response to an external stimulus (think: running to a workout class as soon as you see someone’s “perfect beach body” on Instagram).
  • Before you act, pause and get curious about the feelings and motivations behind the action you’re about to take. Check out the feelings wheel from the Calm app and see if you can pinpoint specific feelings.
  • Once you pinpoint the feeling, think about where that feeling might be coming from. What’s triggering you in this moment? Journal or meditate on it for just a few minutes and then make an empowered choice on what action you want to take next.

If you’re the first person to always jump in and help someone, even if they haven’t asked you to, and you’ve kind of built your identity around being the “fixer,” this is the episode for you. I’m sharing some recent thoughts I’ve had around setting emotional boundaries, which require us to say “no” to things that drain our emotional and mental energy and leave none for ourselves. If you’re constantly exhausted because you give everyone but yourself your precious emotional energy, this is the episode for you.

Some key takeaways on emotional boundaries:

  • Write out a list of your core values and what’s most important to you. Get super clear on the words that describe how you want to feel and show up on a regular basis. If sharing your emotional energy is going to compromise your values at a given time, you need to say “no” and set that emotional boundary.
  • Something we have to confront when setting emotional boundaries is that we don’t have full control over every situation, especially the actions of others. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but letting that go is an important boundary to set.
  • If you relate to constantly feeling depleted and exhausted because you’re constantly giving your emotional energy to others instead of to yourself, you need stronger emotional boundaries. It’s crucial for your mental well being to do so.

Do you feel content with your life, just the way it is today? If you’re not, you are definitely not alone. And if you are, you might feel strange saying so because somewhere along the line, being “content” became synonymous with “settling.” In this episode, I’m exploring what it means to constantly be striving for more rather than recognizing when we’re content, and what might be holding us back from feeling like we’re enough just as we are.

Some key takeaways on feeling more content:

  • When we allow being “content” to be synonymous with “settling,” we’re operating under the assumption that we are never enough just as we are at any point. That simply isn’t true. You are enough even if you haven’t accomplished all your goals.
  • Get quiet enough with yourself to really tune into your thoughts, what you have in your life, and your values. We spend so much time consuming and comparing that we rarely take stock of who we are and what we have long enough to feel good about it.
  • Limit or eliminate distractions that are keeping you from being in touch with your own thoughts and beliefs about what “enough” is. This might be social media, watching TV, or even certain people that cause you to doubt yourself.

Do you have a goal for your life, or your business, or your career, that feels so far away from you that it almost feels impossible to reach? Maybe you want to reach a certain revenue goal, but it feels impossible because you’ve been stuck at your current income for years. Or maybe you want to run a half marathon, but a 5K is a struggle for you right now. That big goal we’ve never reached before can feel impossible when we’re looking at the gap of disbelief. In this episode, I’m sharing how to overcome that gap so you don’t give up on yourself and your biggest dreams.

Resources mentioned:

  • Listen to Episode 56: You Can Still Experience Burnout Doing What You Love

Some key takeaways on crossing the gap of disbelief:

  • Stay focused and clear on your goal. When you reach the gap of disbelief, you might feel the urge to turn around and abandon your goal, retreating back to what’s comfortable. Don’t do it! You owe it to yourself to keep moving forward and fix your eyes on the prize.
  • Be consistent. It can be really discouraging when we’re working really hard and taking all the right actions, but we still haven’t reached the goals. Especially if you’ve been at it for years, it’s easy to want to give up. Slow and steady work can have huge rewards in the long run. Keep at it.
  • Pay attention to the negative self-talk that’s coming up for you. Instead of letting them in and agreeing with them, simply listen to the thoughts, and take them as evidence of the mental clutter you need to clean up before you move forward.

We’ve all experienced times when we’ve suddenly felt an onslaught of overwhelming and racing thoughts that feel so tangible they make you dizzy, lightheaded, and unable to breathe. In this episode, I’m sharing my toolkit of exercises that can be done wherever and whenever stress strikes you so you can calm yourself down and pull yourself back into the present moment.

Need help creating a plan to manage the stress in your daily life and routines? Send me a DM on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week 1:1 coaching program.

A few tactics for calming yourself down when you’re stressed are:

  • Focus on taking the right kinds of breaths. Our breathing can get shallow and quick when we’re anxious and overwhelmed, so focus on taking deep breaths where you can feel your belly expand as you inhale.
  • Human touch can be very powerful for calming us down. If you’re overwhelmed, place your hand on your chest and start talking to yourself with reassuring words like “it’s going to be okay,” “I’m safe,” or “you’ve got this and you can get through it.” You can say these words in your head, but hearing your own voice can really calm you down.
  • Notice the environment around you and call out what you’re seeing, feeling, hearing, and smelling. This pulls you out of your head of racing thoughts and into your environment and the present moment.

When I was at the height of my anxiety and burnout, I had a great-on-paper life, so it was really difficult to recognize that something wasn’t right. There were several signs that I was out of alignment, and in this episode I’m sharing all the signs and symptoms that might be telling you the same. If you’ve been feeling off but can’t quite put your finger on why, this is the episode for you.

If you need help creating some routines that implement things you love to do, as well as some necessary self-care, into your week, send me a DM on Instagram about my 12-week coaching program. This 1:1 program is designed to carve out one hour per week for you to get clarity on where you’re out of alignment and how to get back into it. I work with busy, overwhelmed women, so the actionable takeaways each week are tiny and attainable goals you can add into your currently hectic schedule. I can’t wait to connect with you!

Some signs you may be out of alignment are:

  • Because we live in a culture that prioritizes productivity over well-being, you may have accepted that you’ll always be in a constant state of burnout and overwhelm. Being easily irritated, fatigued, and unmotivated are all signs of burnout and they don’t have to be the norm.
  • Seeking external validation or pleasure are both signs that you’re out of alignment. If you need constant reassurance from those around you in order to feel content, or if you’re frequently numbing out with content consumption or alcohol, you may be living out of alignment with yourself.
  • If you are living for the weekends and spend your weekend avoiding any and all feelings about the upcoming week, it means you’re missing elements of things you love in your day-to-day routines.

Since I started taking on clients again, I’ve been doing a lot of reflection on what I wish I’d known when I was going through the height of my anxiety and burnout. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s really difficult to gain the perspective needed to understand how to care for yourself and change some of the behavioral patterns that are keeping you stuck. In this episode, I’m sharing all the things I wish I had understood then to hopefully help you have that perspective in this season.

Do you need some support with navigating a season of burnout and setting up habits to prevent it in the future? Send me a DM over on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week coaching program!

Some things I wish I’d know when I was at my most anxious point:

  • Your mind cannot overpower your physical symptoms when it comes to chronic stress. You can’t “think” yourself into a relaxed state, and your body is keeping score of the anxious thoughts and feelings you’re having. Rest, pull in fresh air with deep breaths, move your body, and take care of yourself during anxious moments.
  • You can’t fix people or take their problems away. If other people’s hurt or hardships are making you feel anxious or worried, it’s still not your responsibility to try to fix their pain. That person is capable of solving their problems and you depleting yourself won’t allow you to be supportive to them through their struggles.
  • Pay attention to patterns of perfectionism, people pleasing, and overall trying to fix and control everything around you. A lot of times we write these off as just being a part of our personality, but if you look a little closer you might find that these behaviors pop up when we’re going through seasons of increased anxiety.

Do you feel constantly bombarded by notifications of text messages, social media notifications, and emails? You are definitely not alone! The pressure to address things right when they happen keeps us in a constant state of urgency, which takes a huge toll on our nervous system. As high achievers, we are even more inclined to knock out that project well before the deadline, respond to emails right when they come in, or jump in to help others as soon as they ask for it. In this episode, I’m digging into steps I’ve taken to step away from urgency and prioritize peace and relaxation in my life.

Do you need some support with prioritizing your peace? Send me a DM over on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week coaching program!

Some key takeaways on ditching a constant state of urgency:

  • Our society is one of fast responses and instant gratification. When we stay in this state of urgency, we’re constantly putting our nervous system in flight or fight mode, which contributes to exhaustion and burnout.
  • When you’re having dedicated relaxation time, or time when you’re being present with yourself or loved ones, put your phone on silent or Do Not Disturb. Protect that time and prioritize which moments will be uninterrupted without constant distractions and notifications.
  • Be okay with challenging urgency culture. You don’t need to respond to texts right away, and you can mute group chats or notifications as needed to step away from this constant sense of urgency.

Have you ever sat down to finally enjoy your favorite beverage and a good book and suddenly… your mind floods with all the unfinished things on your to-do list? My high achievers know what I’m talking about! It can be so difficult to relax and rest when we’re so hyper aware of the looming tasks ahead. We often overwork ourselves so we can “actually enjoy” our break, which creates a vicious cycle of burnout and mandatory rest, AKA your body demands rest by getting sick. In this episode, I’m sharing some of the tactical steps and mindset tips I’ve used to settle down so I can be intentional about rest and relaxation.

Resources mentioned:

  • Listen to Episode 56: You Can Still Experience Burnout Doing What You Love
  • Send me a DM over on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week coaching program!

Some key takeaways on the to-do list that’s holding you back from relaxation:

  • Try to distinguish between what you think needs to get done versus what actually needs to get done. We are so conditioned to produce, execute, and accomplish that we forget there should be time in our schedule to just be.
  • Perfectionism can make us think that something needs to be done by us to be done correctly. Take a look at your to-do list and honestly ask yourself if someone else can do some of the things on that list. As long as it gets done, does it matter if it’s the most perfect execution of the task?
  • If you’re struggling with “earning” your rest, take the time to acknowledge everything you have gotten done, all that you’ve accomplished, and remind yourself that whatever end goal you’re working towards doesn’t have to be achieved for you to take time to rest.

Today’s episode is part life update, part podcast update, and mainly real talk about burnout! During my anxiety journey, I learned a lot about the signs of burnout and I made it my mission to establish habits to keep me grounded and rested. In this new and exciting season of working on some really cool projects, I found myself recognizing signs of burnout. In this episode, I’m sharing what I recognized, how I’m taking steps to protect myself from burnout, and what’s next for the podcast as a result.

Some key takeaways from today’s episode:

  • Be on the lookout for signs of burnout! Especially with everything going on in the world, pay attention to your media consumption, sleep quality, and overall energy levels. Your body will let you know if something is up so you can make adjustments accordingly.
  • You can still get burnt out doing things that you love and are passionate about! Everything you do requires energy, even the fun and exciting stuff, so make sure you’re still prioritizing self-care and rest.
  • The podcast will be moving to a bi-weekly schedule starting in March to give me some more space and time in my calendar for rest and intention! The next episode will be released on March 14th. Stay tuned for some super impactful episodes this Spring!

So many people have suffered from trauma in their lives. We often think of trauma as a huge, life-altering event, but it can be much more nuanced than that. No matter what you’ve been through - big or small - your experiences are valid. In this episode, Sheila Anne defines trauma and gives concrete examples of how it can manifest itself in our lives through behavioral patterns. If you’re an overachiever or a people pleaser, there might be some serious eye openers in this episode for you!

Sheila's mission is to help ambitious women thrive in body, mind, and soul. She supports clients and groups in making whole-person change by holding space for their unique experiences, offering new perspectives, and intuitively integrating healing modalities. She is a Trauma-Informed Certified Coach, Whole Person Certified Coach, ICF Associate Certified Coach, and Yoga Instructor.

Some key takeaways on trauma are:

  • You might think of major events or experiences when you think of “trauma,” but there are a lot more nuances to what can cause trauma. Intergenerational trauma, unmet needs when you were a child, and even life events that are usually branded as exciting changes like moving can bring trauma.
  • Sometimes our behavioral patterns can give us clues to past traumas. For example, deriving your value from being busy and always accomplishing things might come from observing someone in your life exhibit “laziness” that made them unable to find belonging.
  • It can be easy to attach your identity to these behavioral patterns over time. I called myself “The Queen of Indecision” for so long to mask my own pattern, and I’ve had to work to let go of that identity so I can get curious about my indecision and start to overcome it. Letting go of that identity allows you to work to overcome some of the impacts from trauma.

In recent years, thanks to change makers like Molly Ruggere, there’s been a huge shift in how we talk about alcohol consumption. There is so much more nuance to sobriety than someone being an alcoholic or not, and in this episode we’re discussing getting “sober curious” about your relationship with alcohol and what to do if you feel like you’re leaning on it more than you’d like in order to relax or feel more comfortable in social settings. If you’re looking to feel more empowered about your decisions around alcohol, this episode is for you!

Molly Ruggere is a Certified Life Coach, Alcohol Freedom Coach and Founder of Counterculture Club, a global alcohol-free community based in Charlotte, NC that offers private and group coaching, monthly membership and virtual and in-person events for individuals who want to build authentic relationships, socialize without drinking and counter the mainstream idea that we need alcohol to have fun, fulfilling lives. As someone who once thought alcohol was a requirement for socializing and fun, Molly’s mission is to show others that removing alcohol from your life is the opposite of boring—it opens up doors and possibilities, allowing you to embrace opportunities with clarity.

  • Molly’s IG - https://www.instagram.com/mollyruggere/
  • Counter Culture Club IG - https://www.instagram.com/counterculture_club/
  • https://countercultureclub.org/

Some key takeaways on getting sober curious:

  • If you look at alcohol as your way to unwind, or your reward for getting through the day, get curious about where those beliefs come from. It might be from observing another person (like a parent) treat alcohol as a reward. Unpacking this can help you unlearn that so you can work towards a healthier “reward” at the end of a long day.
  • You don’t have to be an “alcoholic” to explore sobriety or live a sober lifestyle. More and more people are reducing or eliminating their alcohol consumption so they can feel better and engage in social interactions without using alcohol to feel more comfortable. Whatever your reason is for cutting back is completely valid!
  • If you’re looking for some ideas to replace alcohol in your daily and weekly routines, try any form of exercise or movement for those natural feel-good chemicals and health benefits, journaling to relax and practice mindfulness, or just exploring fun and delicious non-alcoholic beverages.

The Wake Up Call Podcast is officially ONE YEAR OLD!! This past year has been such a fun experience of exploration, connecting with people through the podcast, and getting really clear on how I want to show up for you guys in 2022! Stay tuned for more info on upcoming trainings, workshops, coaching, and more!

In today’s episode, I’m reflecting on the last year of the show and sharing how some things that really helped me slow down, confront my anxiety, and take the next right steps toward overcoming the intense feelings of overwhelm. If you are currently finding yourself trapped in comparison or feeling completely stuck, this is the episode for you.

Some key takeaways on getting yourself unstuck:

  • Follow what’s currently making you feel envious of someone else’s life. What is it about their life that you feel like you’re missing in yours? Is it their organization, their consistent workout routine, or their magazine-worthy meals? How can you start working towards creating these things for yourself?
  • Trust yourself when your gut is telling you something in your life doesn’t feel right. Even if you have a “good on paper” life, it doesn’t mean you should ignore the feeling that you’re missing something. Get curious about that.
  • Making a change starts with one baby step at a time. Don’t pressure yourself to have a beautifully planned out itinerary of how you’re going to achieve the life you want. Just take one small step towards it and figure it out as you go.

As high achievers, hitting a slump where you feel uninspired, unmotivated, and unproductive can feel like a shock to our system. We have this instinct to push through it as hard as we can, or to stay in busy mode to distract ourselves, or we judge and punish ourselves for not accomplishing enough.

I am in the midst of a slump myself, and I’m learning to embrace these uncomfortable periods as a signal from my body to slow down, rest, and recharge. In this episode I’m sharing my thoughts on this current bout of feeling unmotivated and what has worked for me to begin to ease out of it.

Some key takeaways on embracing being in a slump are:

  • Reframe being in a slump or feeling uncreative and unproductive as a sign from your body that you need rest. Embrace the slow down. Ask yourself “what’s the restoration I need right now?”
  • Not all feelings are “good” or “bad.” Try to avoid labeling the feelings you’re experiencing during this slump as “bad.” It’s not helpful to judge ourselves for what we’re feeling, and it keeps us from being still and present with those feelings.
  • Do your best to maintain good habits and routines while you’re in a slump. Don’t be afraid to modify them to meet your energy levels rather than pushing yourself too hard and not being able to sustain your habits at all.

“Intuitive Eating” is a huge buzzword in the health and wellness space, but what does it actually mean? In this episode, Victoria Yates is helping us dig deep into our internal beliefs about food and the messaging that keeps us stuck in restrictive diets, obsessive eating habits, and unhealthy relationships with food. Intuitive Eating is an approach to eating that encourages mindfulness, healing your relationship with food, and ending diet mentality once and for all! If you struggle to listen to your body’s cues on food, or if you have an inner dialogue criticizing you for your food choices, you are not alone and this episode is for you.

Victoria Yates is a Registered Nurse, Whole Health Coach, & Intuitive Eating Counselor passionate about helping high-achieving women feel calm around food and confident in themselves. She teaches through her social media and her podcast, the Redefining Health Podcast, in addition to her coaching program.

Some key takeaways on intuitive eating are:

  • One of the most important steps towards intuitive eating is unpacking the current core beliefs. We pick up a lot of thoughts and beliefs around food in our lives, and we can ditch a diet mentality by addressing these head-on.
  • Another big step to healing your relationship with food is understanding there are no “good” or “bad” foods. Food is just neutral, and removing the labels of “good” vs. “bad” helps you start to distinguish between foods you really enjoy vs. foods that you don’t enjoy eating.
  • A lot of food-related issues we might have aren’t food-related at all. You might be experiencing struggles with perfectionism, comparison, and self-worth and using food as a coping mechanism for those things.

Have you ever thought “Things will slow down once this project at work is done,” or “I’ll clear up my calendar once I have a baby,” or at least heard the phrase “I’ll sleep when I’m dead?” All of these phrases imply that you’re waiting for a specific milestone to hit before you even think about taking steps to slow down and let go of some commitments you’re clinging to. We are so conditioned to be busy that we forget we don’t need a reason to slow down. In fact, slowing down now will allow us to actually enjoy those milestones when they come!

In this episode, Katie Welker is here to share how she’s been intentional about slowing down and leaving more white space on her calendar for peace. Katie is a 32-year-old newlywed, devoted dog mama and fraternal twin. After spending nearly a decade in Buffalo and Chicago, she’s currently living life out loud in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y. She has a career in corporate communications, a side business sharing her love for clean makeup and skincare, and spent nearly a decade as a high school cheerleading coach. An enthusiast for confidence, self-care and mental health, she creates a safe space for people to be their purest selves through her long standing blog, social media platforms and in person.

  • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherinecostello/
  • Side business: https://www.beautycounter.com/katiecostellowelker

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • It is okay to have space on your plate and not immediately fill that with another commitment. Slowing down is not only allowed, it’s also so important for keeping stress levels in check. It’s okay to let go of current commitments to hold space for slowing down.
  • So many of us wait for certain milestones - after a project at work wraps, when you have kids, when you retire - to slow down or to change our habits. Rather than waiting for a milestone, prioritize rest and change your habits now. It will actually allow you to enjoy the milestone when it comes.
  • People might not understand how or why you’re taking time to slow down or let go of current commitments, but you don’t need to justify your choices to them at all. There doesn’t have to be a concrete reason why you’re slowing down - you deserve that space no matter what!

The start of the new year is the perfect time to set new goals, but a lot of people set huge, unrealistic goals and then fizzle out by February feeling defeated. No more of that! In this episode, I’m sharing my practical guide for setting small, actionable goals to help you make actual progress in your life. The Wheel of Life is one of my favorite personal development and goal setting tools, and I’m showing you exactly how I use it!

  • Wheel of Life - https://medium.com/thrive-global/how-does-one-become-centered-and-balanced-bb28627a4461

3 key takeaways on this approach to goal setting:

  • Print out the Wheel of Life and evaluate your level of satisfaction in each area. Each area is open for interpretation of what it means to you, so take the time to define each one and what it means in your life.
  • Your bottom two or three lowest rated categories can become your first priority for setting small, actionable goals to help you grow or change in these areas.
  • Set a regular cadence throughout the year (i.e. every month or every quarter) to re-evaluate where you are in each category in your wheel. Notice where you’ve improved and where you might need to set some more goals.

Today I’m joined by guest host and friend of the podcast, Chelsea Capps! Chelsea and I are digging into the topic of the Great Resignation - the current trend of thousands of people quitting their jobs because they’re unhappy with their workplace in some way. If you’ve felt called to throw your desk papers in the air and dramatically exit the building, you’re not alone! In this episode, we’re discussing how to decide whether you should actually quit your job, some changes you can make at work to make your job more enjoyable, and mindset shifts we need to make to stop tying our satisfaction at work to our satisfaction with our lives as a whole.

Links mentioned:

  • Listen to Episode 17: Let Go of Hustle and Embrace Slowing Down with Chelsea Capps

  • Follow Chelsea on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thebrandingalchemist/
  • The Branding Alchemist Website - https://www.thebrandingalchemist.com/

3 things to keep in mind during the great resignation:

  • When deciding whether or not to leave your job, try to avoid making a decision that’s reactive and emotional to everything happening around you.
  • Try to pinpoint the main parts of your job you’re really unhappy with and address those head on. A courageous conversation with your manager or setting better boundaries around your work hours could be the key to reclaiming excitement for your job.
  • Realize that your job or title shouldn’t be the sole source of happiness in your life. Focus on building a life outside of work that’s fulfilling and allows you to live authentically.

Chelsea Capps is a full-time corporate marketer and the founder of The Branding Alchemist, a side hustle she launched to help solve business and marketing problems of all kinds with the power of brand strategy. The way Chelsea sees it, the process of transforming a brand is a lot like the science of alchemy: melting down the elements of your message and your vibe until all that’s left is gold. She’s also super passionate about personal development, and looks to weave her clients’ unique stories into the most authentic version of their brand identity. On this week’s episode, Rhya Pachin is here to discuss gut health. Gut health has been a hot topic as more research is showing how it is the ultimate connector to all of our body’s functions. From our energy levels to hormone imbalances, poor gut health can be attributed to a lot of overall health issues. In this episode, Rhya is unpacking what gut health is, how it affects our overall health, and what we can do to start better supporting our gut health.

Through her own family’s health journey, Rhya developed a passion for integrative and functional nutrition. Since completing her Master’s degree in human nutrition, she has acquired additional functional medicine education and training which she uses daily in practice. Rhya is passionate about using functional nutrition principles to help people get to the root cause of symptoms and resolve stubborn health issues.

Rhya owns and operates her private practice, Carolina Functional Nutrition, in the Charlotte, NC area. Her primary areas of focus include: IBS, IBD, autoimmune disease, as well as food allergies and sensitivities.

3 key takeaways about gut health:

  • Keeping your gut healthy can be the key to relieving so many health issues including mental illnesses, autoimmune disorders, obesity, and even infertility.
  • It’s important to limit antibiotic use as much as possible. While they serve their purpose in severe cases, they completely wipe out all the good bacteria in our gut that we need to support all the functions in our bodies.
  • To feed your gut, focus on eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, fiber, and probiotic supplements when needed. Reach out Rhya if you’re looking for more info on what to eat for gut health.

The holidays are a joyous time of year. Great food, spending time with loved ones, and the bright colors of holiday decorations can be so much fun! But many people feel holiday stress and even sadness - and immediately feel guilty about those feelings. In this episode, I’m sharing some thoughts that have been on my heart about how these feelings show up this time of year. If this sounds like you, I hope you find just 10 minutes to yourself this week to listen to it.

If you need tips on how to maintain good habits while traveling or entertaining family this holiday season, check out episode 21 of the podcast!

A couple key takeaways for the holiday season:

  • Your complicated feelings are valid. You are not obligated to repress your feelings in the name of “holiday spirit.”
  • It is 100% okay to make some time to be alone and recharge even if you’re with family. It’s so important to hold that space for yourself and keep the routines that make you feel great.

Today we’re talking about goal setting - but not the traditional goals you might be used to. Over the last year, I’ve changed my own approach to setting goals, and these goals have absolutely changed my life.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the big picture long-term goals that we neglect the short-term changes that can make a huge impact. In this episode, I’m explaining my new approach and how you can apply it to your 2022 goals! WARNING: Major f-bombs ahead in this episode because this topic fires me up!! Get your hearts ready!

3 key takeaways about goal setting:

  • We feel like we have to accomplish certain goals that we are hearing from external sources. Instead, look internally at your personal experience and set your goals according to that.
  • Journaling can help you dig deep and get to the root of your goals. It can be useful for pulling back layers of history that led to certain behaviors or for understanding what accomplishing a goal means to you.
  • Look for resources that can guide you through accomplishing the goals you’ve set. This is especially important for goals you might not have the background knowledge on, such as nutrition or the technical side of a new hobby. These resources can look like books, podcasts, or coaching.

In today’s episode, we are diving into a topic that has affected us all: burnout. Burnout isn’t just feeling exhausted from overworking, it’s also this sense of dread around our work. Sometimes burnout happens because we’re neglecting our own needs, but it can also come from needing external validation and trying your worth to your accomplishments and achievements. If you’re resonating with this, you are not alone! Jessica Lackey is here to tell us how to recover from burnout and how to prevent it with some mindset and boundary hacks.

Jessica Lackey is a Business Integrator that helps visionary women+ leaders build sustainable businesses. Jessica combines master coaching with 15 years of experience in corporate America, with experience consulting at McKinsey and Company and operations leadership at Nike and Electrolux Major Appliances. Jessica is an ACC Certified Coach and an Awaken Your Life Master Coach-Trainer. Jessica has an MBA from Harvard Business School, engineering degrees from Virginia Tech and Penn State, and is also a Certified Holistic Nutritionist. Jessica and her husband Philip reside with their dog in Charlotte, NC. She can be reached at https://www.jessicalackey.com/.

Resources mentioned:

  • “How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy” by Jenny Odell

Some key takeaways from this episode on burnout are:

  • The three elements of burnout are exhaustion, cynicism and detachment from work, and ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. You can feel exhausted from working on something you love and are proud of, but if you’re also feeling that cynicism and ineffectiveness, you’re probably burned out.
  • Some ways of slowing down are setting time limits on social media consumption, leaving white space in your calendar to do something relaxing, or scheduling a weekly relaxation ritual for yourself.
  • Trust yourself to allocate the right amount of effort to the right things, and let go of the rest. Not everything needs 100% of your effort, and some things might not need any of your attention at all.

Her mission is to guide and support women to become the greatest and most fulfilled version of themselves through mindset work, nutrition and physical fitness.

She believes everyone has a story which greatly affects their thoughts, beliefs, and choices. Everyone deserves to look and feel happy, confident and Lauren believes that with the right tools, support and guidance, every woman can!

Follow Lauren on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laurennicolefitness/

Lauren’s 3 tips for taking that first step towards your goal:

  • Ask for help! Whether it's a health and fitness professional or a counselor (or both!), it will help lighten the load and make the process less overwhelming.
  • Create small goals for yourself that you can achieve to start building your confidence and your belief in yourself. This confidence is going to translate not just to your health goals, but also to your work and relationships.
  • You’re the architect of your body and of your life. It can feel like a lot is out of your control, but focus on what you can control and do the work to uncover the feelings behind the habits that are holding you back.

Do you ever feel like you’re putting up a facade when you’re with a group of people? Maybe you feel everyone else has it together while you’re struggling to juggle all the things. In today’s episode, Vanessa Cornell is here to talk about holding space for your innermost thoughts to come forward, and how to have the courage to share those thoughts with others.

Vanessa Cornell is the founder of NUSHU. Through the power of true community, NUSHU holds space for curiosity and evolution for those experiencing profound personal awakening and transformation. Since her personal awakening, Vanessa has become a relentless and curious observer of the human condition, and a leading voice for true empowerment and a breaking down of the guru paradigm in the wellness space. 3 takeaways about community and discovering your truest self:

  • We put our best selves on like armor. This armor isn’t actually protecting you, it is cultivating the fear of showing your real self.
  • Whatever is present for you is what’s right for you. Do not make judgements based on other people’s thoughts and experiences.
  • Holding space for each other to just be ourselves cultivates true community. True community is a container of safety. If people feel safe, they will bring kindness and understanding to the community.

Today’s episode is about finding ways to be more present in your life. Being present is something that I have always struggled with and I wanted to share some ways that I have been working on being more present in my own life.

Links mentioned:

3 things you can do to help you be more present in your life:

  • Give yourself a runway. A plane needs space to get going before take-off and slow down after landing. We work the same way. Give yourself some time to warm up and cool down so that you don’t just go until you drop.
  • Be more aware of the type of movement you’re doing. Exercise is an important part of taking care of yourself, but sometimes we think super intense workouts are better for us when in actuality they could be causing more exhaustion and be working against you. Try adding gentler workouts, like walking and jogging, into your routine.
  • Add an element of play to your day. “Play” is creating a space to just be. Find an activity that ignites fun and joy. This could be a dance party, coloring books, getting outside, and trying new places.

Are you on a path that doesn’t align with what you want anymore? So many of us are action-takers in pursuit of our dreams, but we don’t always have grace with ourselves when that dream changes.

In today’s episode, Lauren Ansley is here to share her journey of selling her home to pursue full-time entrepreneurship as a comedian, accidentally building a business she didn’t enjoy, and now finding an exciting new job that lights her up. Lauren is a stand-up comedian, emcee, show producer, speaker, and entrepreneur with 15+ years of event planning and marketing experience. She is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Links mentioned:

3 Key takeaways from Lauren’s story:

  • Take small steps to build your self-worth in the pursuit of what you love. This might look like steadily increasing your prices, or going all in to launch something new.
  • Don’t put a strict timeline on yourself. Pursuing your passion and achieving your definition of success can take longer than you might think.
  • Passion projects do not have to become full time jobs. They can stay as a hobby or side hustle. You are not a failure if you don’t turn your passion projects into your full time job.

Kenzie Harkey is back to talk about home organization! Home organization is a trending topic, but it’s about more than aesthetics. If you’re struggling with anxiety and overwhelm, home organization can keep those feelings at bay by creating ease in the space where it matters most. Kenzie Harkey is the Founder and Organizing Expert behind Simply Dare, Charlotte's lifestyle and organizing company helping busy families simplify, organize, and style their homes. Simply Dare's goal is to transform the way you experience your space by creating custom organizing solutions for closets, pantries, home offices, garages, and kitchens, as well as moving coordination services to ease the stress of your move. 3 things to keep in mind about organizing your home:

  • Create systems in your home. Where in your house do things get cluttered the fastest? Systems create a process for keeping these areas tidy and functional.
  • Figure out your drop zone and command center. Drop zones are an area near your main entryway where you can store bags, shoes, and other things that you might need as you run out the door. Command centers are the place where you can keep the family calendar, mail, and packages. It is the go-to place for info about the household.
  • There are two approaches you can take for that first step in tackling your home organization. 1) You can focus on the spaces that stress you out the most/ have the biggest impact on your life. This can take a long time and be overwhelming. 2) Start with a small space, like a junk drawer. This is less overwhelming and can give you that quick win to boost your confidence to get you through the bigger projects.

In this week’s episode, I am doing something that scares me: a solo episode. It’s not my first solo episode on the show, but anytime it’s just my voice on the podcast, imposter syndrome and my inner critic creep in. Today I’m taking steps to overcome that inner critic by talking about big dreams and how we can get in this mindset about how little we have accomplished that we don’t realize that we are actively living our dreams out right now.

How to Become a Magnet for Your Biggest Dreams:

  • Remember: small steps are still steps. No matter the size of the dream, those small steps are the things that make your big dreams a reality.
  • When you put out negative thoughts, you attract negative thoughts. Shift your mindset away from negativity and towards attracting positive thoughts about your goals and dreams.
  • Work on being more present in your life and taking in the magic that is happening right now in your life, every single day.

Does the thought of talking about money make you break out in a cold sweat? You are not alone! Cati Winkel is here today to discuss our money stories. How can we identify these blocks - our stories - and what is the impact on our experience of abundance in our lives because of them?

Cati Winkel is a trained coach and healer, supporting her clients in transcending what keeps them blocked in the areas of self-worth, relationships, money, and fulfillment. 3 Key takeaways about money stories:

  • Money is perceived safety. We think that by having a good job and savings, we will have a safety net. Think about what it feels like to be safe and how you can create that feeling within yourself.
  • Start building trust in yourself to make the right decisions when it comes to money. You are the one that knows what is best for your life and your money.
  • Money is given the same weight as love and power in a lot of instances. Figure out how to detach the weight from money and allot it to other things in your life. Free yourself from the burden and focus on loving yourself. Loving yourself is extremely powerful.

  • Have a helpful and uplifting mantra to repeat when you feel overwhelmed.

The key to releasing emotional baggage might be in your closet. Think about it, how do you feel about the clothes in your closet? Is it filled with memories that you can't let go, or trendy pieces that you saw on Instagram, but don't really fit your style? Do you carry stories of what you think your clothes say about you? Style Coach Amy McBride joins the podcast this week to talk about this connection and tips on finding clothes that reflect your inner self. You'll come to see that this conversation runs much deeper than clothing labels.

Amy McBride is a personal stylist who helps busy women create wardrobes that empower them to confidently focus on the things they are most passionate about. Amy believes that a confident closet starts with who you are as a person and should reflect you and your life. Follow Amy on Instagram where she shares style inspiration, teaches practical tips, and to see more of her life as a busy working mom.

3 things to consider when going through your closet:

  • Does it fit me? Does it physically fit you and also fit your lifestyle? If it's a no to either, it needs to be set free!
  • Do you actually like it? Is it something that you actually like or was it just the new trendy thing that you felt obligated to get for the sake of seeming cool? If you don't like it then you won’t wear it or feel comfortable in it.
  • Letting go of clothing can be freeing, but difficult! If you have an emotional attachment to a piece of clothing, set it aside and revisit it in 6 months. You will be in a different place emotionally and able to make a more informed decision.

3 takeaways about devaluing and finding your value again:

  • For most women, devaluing is not a conscious decision. It is a taught behavior that women feel pressured into keeping up.
  • Stop and ask “what about me?” We can get so caught up in what we think we should look or be like that we can lose ourselves in the process.
  • Make time for yourself and actually show up for yourself. Creating a time or an activity for yourself gives you the space to build a firm foundation of who you are.

Nikki Steele lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband. She is an advocate for all things mental health-related, and loves working with kids of all ages! Nikki’s world flipped upside down when she unexpectedly took on the title of “Young Stroke Survivor” in her late twenties. 3 Takeaways for Nikki’s journey:

  • You never know what someone is going through. Take a step back and consider what the implications are of how you are treating people.
  • It can be a struggle to process events in your life when you don’t have people that understand what you are going through. Find a community that makes you feel seen, heard, and understood.
  • Healing doesn't end with your physical ailments. Mental healing can take much longer than you expect and is an ongoing process. Give yourself and others the space to go through that process.

Do you thrive on external validation? So many of us do, and this week Sheila Anne Murray is unpacking why we feel the need for external validation and how to find internal validation and self worth. 3 key takeaways about external vs. internal validation:

  • Stuckness happens to everyone, it can be like the flu where you don't feel good and can’t imagine ever feeling better again. To become unstuck, do a good thing for yourself that brings you the feelings that you want to encourage more of in your life.
  • We are conditioned to be outside-in learners, meaning we learn about ourselves based on what’s happening externally. Take time to be quiet and in the moment to become an inside-out learner.
  • A good place to start working on internal validation is identifying peak moments that make you feel like yourself and then identify what parts of your character came out of those moments.

In this week’s episode, my first therapist, Dr. Kristina Peck, talks about what mindfulness is, how it impacts our mental and physical health, and how we can implement mindful practices in our everyday lives. If you’re someone who suffers from racing thoughts and anxiety, this is an episode you don’t want to miss!

Dr. Peck bio - Kristina “Tina” Peck is a Charlotte, NC based psychologist in private practice. She is also licensed in New York State and part of PSYPACT (allows interstate practice of tele psychology across state bounds of participating states—currently 26). Dr. Peck provides individual Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to create change, connection and vitality in one’s life. Her approach is rounded out with large doses of compassion and humor.

Sites mentioned for finding a therapist near you:

  • Zencare - https://zencare.co/
  • Psychology Today - https://www.psychologytoday.com/us

3 Key takeaways about mindfulness are:

  • Mindfulness is the quality of awareness that we bring to ourselves. Treat your thoughts like you treat mail. You filter out which mail is meaningful mail and which mail is just junk. You can do the same with your thoughts: what is actually meaningful to you and what needs to be thrown in the junk pile?
  • Focus on the “what” not the “why.” Focusing on the “what” allows you to feel a sensation or emotion and let it pass, whereas focusing on the “why” could cause you to mentally and physically spiral.
  • Mindfulness is not a goal, it is an action. It is meeting your thoughts with curiosity and letting them pass.

This week we are talking with Mindset & Leadership Coach Carianna Lynne Hebert about what makes up comfort zones and how to break out of them. We’re also diving into “essence,” which is made up of your unique traits that help you thrive outside of your comfort zone. If you’re ready to step out of your comfort zone to pursue your biggest dreams, this is the episode for you!

Carianna Lynne Hebert is a Professional Certified Mindset and Leadership Coach, entrepreneur, teacher, and storyteller. As a coach, she supports her community of leaders and founders to discover their innate value, master their story, and be exactly who they want to be in the world. On a personal note, Carianna also loves to connect and express her creativity through travel, nature, design, writing, and photography. Her favorite place to be is at the beach with her partner Hank and dog Rylie.

  • Website: cariannalynne.co
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cariannalynne/

3 things to consider when stepping out of your comfort zone:

  • Figure out your essence. Your essence encompasses the human characteristics that make you unique. They are your superpowers, and you need to figure out how to harness them.
  • People break out of their comfort zones when they strongly desire something that requires discomfort. Identify what’s pulling you out of your comfort zone and where that is coming from. Once you have figured that out, turn to your friends that will nudge you out of your comfort zone and love you through that step.
  • You are not your history; you are your story. This is both a challenge and a victory; learn how to use it for good and celebrate it.

In today’s episode, we are continuing our conversation on energy and being your most authentic self with Dana Childs. Dana lets us in on her personal spiritual journey, coming to terms with fear, and dropping judgment to open yourself up to a better life. Make sure you listen to Part 1 of our convo here - https://anchor.fm/wakeupcall-aliciahopkins/episodes/025-Exploring-Intuitive-Energy-Healing-with-Dana-Childs---Pt--1-e149psj.

Dana Childs is an intuitive energy healer, author, and teacher. She delivers grounded spirituality with heart, humor, and unabashed truth through her talks and healing sessions delivered to the executive, individual, or couple. She leads workshops, online courses, and retreats to help others learn to access their truest selves and open their intuitive gifts. She is a favorite of Gwenyth Paltrow’s company Goop and is partnered with Four Seasons Oahu in Hawaii for exclusive guided meditations and in person retreats. Her book, co-authored with Cyndi Dale, titled Chakras, Food, & You will be released August of 2021. When not helping others on their search for personal and professional fulfillment, she can be found writing articles, researching mold, or playing and hiking with her dog, Sufi, in North Carolina. For more information, check out danachildsintuitive.com and follow her on Instagram @danachildsintuitive.

Some key takeaways on energy are:

  • Spiritual awakenings can look like a mental breakdown at times. It is like a seed breaking open to grow. We are all intuitive, we just need to take the time to tap into that intuition to have that breakthrough.
  • Drop the judgement of yourself to follow what you truly love to do. Honor that first and your loved ones will come around to it and let go of their own fears in the process.
  • Fear comes from two places: survival and loss. By letting go of the fear of loss, we open ourselves up to unknown opportunities that are ahead of us.

You’ve probably heard the terms “energy,” “chakras,” and “vibrations” get thrown around a lot lately. If you don’t consider yourself a “woo woo” person, these words might not make a lot of sense in the context of happiness and fulfillment. But in today’s episode, Dana Childs, an Intuitive Energy Healer, is sharing all things energy so we can get a better understanding of how energy impacts our emotions and overall health.

For more information, check out danachildsintuitive.com and follow her on Instagram @danachildsintuitive.

Some key takeaways on energy are:

  • Energy is intangible. It’s something we can intuitively feel, but that we can’t always explain. When you walk into a room and can tell there’s tension even though no one has said or done anything, that’s energy.
  • Self-awareness is a huge component of energy healing. Make sure you’re spending time alone with yourself to recognize and understand your feelings. If you can understand your own emotions, you can identify when you're picking up someone else’s energy and release that energy accordingly.
  • There are no such things as bad emotions. All of our emotions - including sadness, anger, and grief - give us information about what we want to leave behind and what we want more of in our lives.

Many of us have an urge to help, which often shows up in the need to step in and save the day by fixing everything. While this comes from a place of kindness and good intentions, it can actually be harmful to both the person you are trying to help and to yourself. In this episode, I’m sharing how you can show up and be supportive without doing the fixing yourself.

Here are three things to keep in mind when you feel the urge to step in and fix something:

  • Fixing can interrupt the cycle of someone’s opportunity to learn something. It can be hard to watch, but it’s so important to let the people you care about learn the lessons they’re meant to learn.
  • Your desire to fix might be more about your own discomfort with a situation than it is about the other person’s discomfort with their situation. When you feel the urge to fix things, reflect on whether you’re making the situation about yourself and your own feelings.
  • When someone comes to you with a problem, ask yourself: is this person asking for my help, or do they just need someone to vent to? Just listening to them is a way to show your support and make them feel heard, and fixing things for them can cause unintended harm.

Today’s episode is all about self-care. Our guest today, Jasmin Egner, describes self-care best in this episode when she says it’s “a hell of a lot more than a bubble bath.” Self-care is about understanding what you need and want, and communicating those things through your words and actions so you can reclaim your personal power. From ditching perfectionism to feeling truly empowered, the self-care practices we discuss in this episode will have powerful ripple effects across all aspects of your life.

Jasmin Egner is an empoweredly autistic, laser focused Life Coach with a background in the performing arts. She is also Co-Founder of Cordial Fox Limited - an ethical and inclusive Coaching and Consultancy company in the UK. Jasmin works internationally with Changemakers who are ready to ditch self-abandonment in the name of a cause, because she believes that we can achieve more good in the world when we know how to prioritise our own needs.

Connect with Jasmin:

Some key takeaways about self-care from this episode are:

  • A huge part of self-care is giving yourself agency to make your own decisions and change your mind anytime something doesn’t feel right. Don’t stay on a path that doesn’t align with your authentic self anymore.
  • When you feel uncertain, take the time to pause. Pausing is so crucial for self-care. Reflect, ask yourself why you’re feeling this way. Then you can make your decision.
  • Don’t mistake kindness as just being nice. Kindness is about doing the right thing, being considerate of others, and being the most authentic version of yourself. Kindness is not about always doing what other people want you to do.
  • A lot of what we know about boundaries and being able to make our own decisions about our lives is learned from the environment we were raised in. It’s so important to break these cycles and question the meaning we assigned to what we observed growing up.

Today’s episode is all about how to prepare for maintaining your great habits before, during, and after your vacation! Vacations are for rest and relaxation, but it’s also important to maintain your favorite habits so you can be fully present, engaged, and happy for your trip. I will show you exactly how to do this in the episode!

Please reach out to me on Instagram @aliciadhopkins and let me know what you do to prepare for vacation to be fully present! I’d love to hear from you and I’m always up for hearing different ways people make time for their favorite routines!

Some key learnings are on how prepare for maintaining your habits before, during, and after your vacation are:

  • When you're getting ready to go on vacation, decide which of your daily habits are your non-negotiables. Another way to look at this is: which habits create a positive ripple effect on your day? Recognize it might not be possible to recreate your entire morning or evening routine on vacation, but you can prioritize the habits that make the biggest impact.
  • Don’t feel guilty for prioritizing your habits and taking time for yourself on vacation, even if it means spending a little time away from friends and family you might be visiting. This is easier said than done, but I have a little pep talk in the episode for ya!
  • When you return from vacation, know it might take a few days and up to a week to get back into your normal routine, and that’s totally okay! Preparing for that re-acclimation time will help you give yourself grace as you ease back into your everyday routines.

I’ve talked extensively about how your career or job shouldn’t be your only sources of personal fulfillment or identity. But, if you work a traditional 9-5 job, you spend a lot of time at work, so you should be doing something that feels aligned to your passions and values. That’s why I invited my friend Karen Weeks to talk us through what it looks like to pivot your career so you can actually look forward to going to work!

Twenty years ago, Karen made a career change from theatre to HR and more recently to Coaching and never looked back! Her purpose is guiding individuals to get unstuck from a career that is draining them and transform their careers so they can feel the same renewed energy she did all those years ago. Karen is the Founder & Principal Coach at KDW Coaching, the host of “Getting off the Hamster Wheel” podcast, a speaker, published author, Girls in Tech NYC board member and award winning culture leader (currently leading the People team at Ordergroove). She lives in NYC with her husband and furry babies.

  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/career_changers_kdw/
  • Podcast Website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1051111

Karen’s top takeaways for a positive career pivot:

  • First: identify what’s making you feel stuck. Is it your boss? Your day-to-day tasks? It’s important to identify why you’re feeling stuck so you make the right career change, not just the next available one.
  • Remember a time when you enjoyed the job you had. What were you doing? What was different? This can help you identify what you enjoy doing for work.
  • Identify your definition of career success. This will be your North star for when you’re feeling defeated and just want to move on to something - anything! - that’s not your current job.

Do you find yourself constantly second guessing your choices, questioning yourself, and living in fear of making a “wrong” choice? For this episode, I invited our friend Rachel Walt back to the podcast to chat more about surrendering to the outcome of our decisions. If the idea of letting go of control makes you anxious, I totally get it. Rachel talks us through practical and actionable ways to make surrendering more accessible so we can have more confidence in the decisions we make - both big and small.

Rachel is the essence of positivity, creativity & authenticity. She is a wife, mom of 3 young kids & the founder of Craftingood. She has a background in holistic health coaching, community organizing, and Speech-Language Pathology. Currently, She's on a mission to empower families, to use creativity and self-compassion as their most powerful tool for raising kind humans, have fun, and change the world! You can find her on Instagram @rachelhwalt. Craftingood is one word with a shared "G". www.craftingood.com on Instagram @wearecraftingood and on Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest @craftingood.

Rachel’s top tips on surrendering to the outcome:

  • During pivotal breakthrough moments, it may be tempting to ask others for their input and perspective, but don’t forget to check in with yourself and process how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking on your own first.
  • We need to train our subconscious mind to trust our own judgement. To do this, make a list of all the great decisions you’ve made in your life. You might notice your best decision-making happened when you followed your gut.
  • When we approach decisions from a place of love and trust, we can have more confidence in our decisions and surrender to the outcome.

Today’s episode is all about the power of our subconscious. About 95% of our everyday actions and decisions are made by our subconscious mind, meaning we think we’re in control when we might actually be letting our trauma, emotions, and bad habits get in the way of our biggest desires. In this episode, Energetic Alignment Coach Cati Winkel shares insight on how our subconscious mind works so you can take steps to rewire your brain for a more fulfilling life.

Cati Winkel is a trained coach and healer, supporting her clients in transcending what keeps them blocked in the areas of self worth, relationships, money, and fulfillment. Her practice incorporates several healing modalities that override blocks at the subconscious, energetic and emotional levels. Cati is based in Overland Park, KS, is married with two girls, and her most recent guilty pleasure is watching the YouTube series Hot Ones.

Here are some key takeaways about our subconscious:

  • Our subconscious works like a database to save and filter information for when we need it later. About 95% of our everyday actions - our habits, routines, and choices - are driven by our subconscious.
  • When you start to feel out of control of your actions, or want to change a pattern of your behavior, ask yourself: “Where did I learn this behavior?” Think about experiences from childhood that could be the root cause so you can acknowledge it and begin to rewire new beliefs.
  • Your subconscious can create “conditions” that block your conscious brain from getting what you want. For example, you might say out loud “I deserve a vacation,” but your subconscious brain will say “I deserve a vacation… when I’ve worked to this point/ achieve this goal/ hit this milestone.” Those subconscious beliefs can keep you from ever actually taking that vacation!
  • Make a list of all the things you internally believe to be true. Then go through the list and unpack the things that aren’t actually true. For example “I cannot be successful until I have zero limiting beliefs,” might be something you believe but it is absolutely not true!
  • Taking action helps to anchor your subconscious mind and reinforce new thoughts and beliefs.

Today’s episode is all about taking a step back from busyness, hustle, and burnout. Much easier said than done! That’s why I invited my friend Chelsea Capps to the show to explain how she went from burning the midnight oil to prioritizing herself and setting better boundaries in work and life. If you find yourself falling back into the pre-COVID hustle after the forced slowdown of 2020, this is the episode for you!

If our conversation at all inspires you to take a look at defining your values personally or upping your brand messaging game professionally, hit her up on Instagram @thebrandingalchemist or check out her website at www.thebrandingalchemist.com.

Some ways to let go of hustle and embrace slowing down are:

  • Stop and celebrate your successes. Let today’s accomplishments be enough to celebrate in the moment before jumping right into the next endeavor.
  • Make a happiness list! This is a list of things that are easy to access and achieve that make you feel fulfilled. For example: cooking a fun new recipe, cleaning up an area of your home, or listening to your favorite podcasts (we hope Wake Up Call makes the list!).
  • When you’re in a place of overwhelm, instead of planning for where you’ll be in 5 or 10 years, focus on what’s right in front of you. Just take the next best step forward.
  • Define your values and your “why” and start infusing these findings into your daily life.

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night. Are you clear on your purpose? Or do you hear the word “purpose” and feel the pressure to find this elusive thing that’s the key to everything? I felt inspired to make this episode because I believe your purpose is not this one, singular thing, but rather a bunch of simple things that we can find follow if we open our hearts and minds to it. If you feel like you’ve lost your purpose in the midst of chaos, this is the episode for you!

3 key reminders on how to find your purpose are:

  • In order to get clear on your purpose, your first step is to eliminate all distractions and be in silence with your thoughts. We can’t have “a-ha” moments about our purpose when we’re blocking our intuition with distracting activities.
  • Raise your energetic frequency by appreciating the simple things and adding more fun and play to your life. Check out episode 14 for more inspiration on adding fun to your life.
  • Try not to make “purpose” out to be this huge single destination. Purpose is more of a moving target that guides us. If you put purpose on a pedestal, you might miss realizing the purpose that’s right in front of you.

Today’s episode is all about taking full ownership of your life. What started out as a conversation about planning turned into an incredible lesson on shifting your mindset into boss mode and prioritizing what’s most important to you in your life. Whether you’re a recovering people pleaser like me, or you’re already a bona fide boss, you do not want to miss this episode!

Danielle Jefferson is the Owner + CEO of Jefferson James Consulting. She’s a Virtual COO helping small businesses understand and optimize their operations to turn 'just getting by' into absolutely killing it. Danielle lives in Charlotte, NC with her family. Follow her on Instagram @danielle_jeffersonjames.

Some key takeaways from this episode are:

  • Before you start planning, decide what’s important to YOU in your life, not what other people think you should be focusing on. Then align your goals and tasks to those values.
  • Don’t get stuck on your plan. Give yourself permission to change course if you realize a different plan might work better.
  • If you don’t tell people what your commitments are, people will set them for you. Be vocal and firm about your priorities.

Today’s episode is all about PLAY! Somewhere in adulthood, we forget to infuse our lives with play, adventure, and fun. In today’s episode, I’m bringing on my friend Leah Milton to teach us how to add more play and adventure into our daily lives.

Leah is a coach and entrepreneur whose life philosophy surrounds building community and empowering others through adventure. She has lived and worked all over the USA and Central and South America in the hospitality industry. Some key takeaways Leah shares include:

  • Think about what you enjoyed doing as a kid and do more of that now. If you’re struggling to tap into that kid energy, and you don’t have kids at home, hope on a video call with a kid in your life and observe their energy and wonder for a bit.
  • Explore in your own backyard. Visit your local farmers market, find a new park or trail to get some movement in, and search for attractions right where you live.
  • Cook foods you never have before to try something new. Give yourself permission to veer from your usual food preferences and routines.
  • When you’re pondering a decision, ask yourself: what’s the worst that can happen? Then ask yourself: what’s the BEST that can happen?

Today’s episode is all about alignment. Regardless of your relationship with the word “alignment,” it’s all about having clarity on who you are, what you want, and what actions you want to take next. Our guest, Rachel Walt, is an alignment expert. After a struggle with postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, she started a self-exploration journey that led her to figure out what alignment means to her. If you’re feeling stuck, unsure, or out of touch with yourself, this is the episode for you!

Use code: WAKEUPCALL to get 20% off anything in the store OR go to https://craftingood.com/discount/WAKEUPCALL

Some key takeaways from this episode are:

  • Paying too much attention to external voices (social media, blogs, family opinions, etc.) can keep you from being truly aligned with yourself.
  • Sometimes we have to give ourselves permission to find ourselves again. Continually ask yourself “who the heck am I?” to stay aligned with your core values.
  • Do you have one person who is far enough from your situation, but still knows you well enough to provide some insight? Examples might be your best friend, a therapist, a coach, or a parent. We need trusted relationships to guide us back to alignment sometimes.
  • “Busy” is a numbing technique. Leave space in your schedule to give yourself time to get back in alignment with yourself.

For today’s episode, I interviewed Dr. Lisa A. Merritt, a Chiropractor, Naturopath, and founder of Weddington Chiropractic Wellness Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Merritt helps her clients by taking a holistic approach to what she calls the “triangle of health”: structural, nutrition, and emotional. If you’ve experienced a lot of aches and pains in conjunction with your anxiety, or if you’re just starting a health journey, this is the episode for you! Dr. Merritt breaks down how stress and anxiety can play a role in your structural health and wellness.

Some of Dr. Merritt’s tips include:

  • If you’re just beginning a holistic health journey, take baby steps. A good first baby step is improving your posture (Dr. Merritt gives tips on how to do this in the episode!).
  • When it comes to nutrition, focus on eating more vegetables and drinking more water. Experiment with new healthy recipes and enjoy alcohol and sugar in moderation.
  • To avoid stress from miscommunication, try using the phrase “so what I hear you saying is…” and repeat back what you understood.

Today’s episode is seriously a dream! I am interviewing one of my mentors and podcast heroes, Betsy Pake, a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and Trainer and host of The Art of Living Big Podcast. In this episode, Betsy is going to help us unpack feelings of jealousy and what they can teach us about our innermost desires. We also discuss the idea of focus, and what can happen when our focus is in the wrong place. If you struggle with jealousy and comparison, or you find yourself focusing on what you want to avoid more than what you want to attain, this is the episode for you.

Some of the key takeaways Betsy shares in the episode include:

  • To change your behavior or environment, change your identity and the way you speak about yourself first.
  • When you feel jealousy, remind yourself that it’s not a “bad” emotion to feel. It’s simply information you’re taking in.
  • Retrain your brain to stop focusing on the problem and start focusing on the possibilities for expansion and forward movement.

For today’s episode, I interviewed Sarah Baus, an entrepreneur and the host of the What Else? Podcast! 3 Key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Trusting and listening to your gut is a learned skill. There is a difference between discomfort because something is new and scary and discomfort because you know it’s just not the right choice for you. Be graceful with yourself as you differentiate the two.
  • Pay attention when you’re clinging to things that give you a stronger sense of control (i.e. tons of intense workouts or eating patterns). It’s an indicator that something is off internally, or that you feel totally out of control of other aspects of your life.
  • When you have some idea of what you want to do next, identify any knowledge gaps and start looking for books, podcasts, and mentors to fill those gaps.

In today’s episode, I’m sharing some personal news… my anxiety came back! My job is transitioning back to the office and traveling for sales, and it brought me back to one of my biggest anxiety triggers: my car. So, I thought I’d share some of the coping mechanisms I’m using to handle this old trigger, and I wanted you to know that if something triggers your anxiety even though you’re putting in the work to manage your stress, you are not alone and it does not reflect on you at all! I hope this episode helps you and resonates with you.

  • @honestlyholistic - https://www.instagram.com/honestlyholistic/

3 Key takeaways I want to highlight from this episode are:

  • When a fearful thought arises, it’s important to acknowledge it, but not “hook into” it. Focus on taking deep belly breaths and talking yourself through the moment, reminding yourself that you’re safe and thanking your body for letting you know something’s up.
  • In the mornings, leave plenty of time for self-care and getting ready, so you can eliminate the “rushed” feeling that could heighten your anxiety.
  • If you are triggered into an anxious state, give yourself grace. Your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do in response to a traumatic event or memory.

In today’s episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast, I’m chatting with Kenzie Harkey, a professional home organizer and the Founder & CEO of Simply Dare. Through Simply Dare, Kenzie helps busy and overwhelmed homeowners take control of the physical clutter in their life and build systems that keep their homes functional and beautiful. I was so curious about how home organization can affect mental health AND what our physical clutter might tell us about our mental clutter. If you struggle to get your clutter under control, this is the episode for you!

Some of Kenzie’s amazing tips and takeaways are:

  • When organizing a space, visualize what you want your space to look like. Write down three words that you want to describe how you want the space to look and feel when you’re done re-organizing it to help guide the design and organizational systems.
  • Pay attention to the items in your space that you’re holding onto because of other people’s expectations, or the expectations you’ve placed on yourself. Letting go of the expectations helps you unload those unwanted items - and those unwanted thoughts!
  • Make sure everything coming into your home has a purpose, and that you’re practicing being a more conscious consumer. Remember: bins and other organizational items that don’t have a purpose are just clutter, too!

When you’re in a place of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm, you might be asking yourself, “what do I even want anymore?” I’ve been there, and that indecisiveness didn’t just apply to big picture wants. I couldn’t make small decisions throughout the day either! If you’re in this place, you are not alone. In this episode, I’m breaking down the steps to take to gain clarity and start taking action to figure out what lights you up.

Some of the takeaways I explain in this episode are:

  • Happiness doesn’t only come from major shifts. Make tiny deposits and take tiny actions. These add up to really big changes over time.
  • Invite more play into your life (think: your favorite childhood activities) to open up more possibilities and avenues for joy in your life.
  • You must face your feelings head on in order to get clarity. Distracting yourself from your feelings only puts you further away from clarity and fulfillment.

If guilt and anxiety are holding you back from living a life you love… this is the episode for you. Some of my favorite “a-ha!” moments from this episode are:

  • The positive attributes of people who have heightened anxiety - you are big-hearted, you’re a thinker, and you care about others.
  • The powerful question Jess asks all of her clients, and what you should ask yourself to enter a more fulfilled phase of your life.
  • How important it is to find a coping mechanism for anxiety that works for YOU! Figure out what helps you and stick to that, unapologetically.

Today’s episode is definitely a vulnerable one. I’m sharing my raw, honest anxiety journey from feeling fearful of leaving my house, to starting this podcast. I’m sharing my key learnings, why anxiety ended up being such a gift, and what I wish someone had told me when I was going through it.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, therapist, or any sort of medical professional. I am simply sharing my experience and what I learned from it all.

Some key learnings I share in this episode are:

  • If your body is telling you it’s tired, don’t push through that exhaustion. Get good sleep and implement a strong night routine.
  • Learn to identify and recognize your true feelings beyond “happy” and “sad.” Check out this emotion wheel to help you: https://www.healthline.com/health/emotion-wheel
  • Be more conscious of the content you’re consuming. If you’re filling your head with content that’s mind-numbing (endless hours of Netflix) or fear-based (even five minutes of the news), try replacing that with something that might fuel your growth, like reading or listening to a podcast. (You’re off to a great start if you’re reading this!)

In this episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast, I’m introducing my four pillars of personal development, which I like to call the Core Four! I’ll be referring to these throughout my podcast episodes, and digging deeper into each pillar in future episodes. The Core Four help me stay grounded, motivated, and healthy - both physically and mentally!

My “Core Four” are:

  • Movement - Not necessarily always “exercise,” but moving your body to celebrate and nurture it in your daily routine.
  • Mindfulness - Bringing your awareness to what’s happening right before you. If you have racing thoughts, try journaling. It forces you to slow them down long enough enough to capture them!
  • Habits - These are routines ingrained in our brains that keep us productive, healthy, and sane during chaotic times!
  • Growth - To me, this means constantly learning and developing, and staying curious about the world around you.

When I was wondering which guests I’d like to have on the show, Lauren Lang was at the top of my list for the major decision and life change she made a few years ago. Lauren and I became friends several years ago when we both served on the board of a charity event. Lauren is a wife, a mom, and an entrepreneurial badass whose story shows us that you’re only one decision away from a totally different life. If you are in the process of navigating divorce and wondering what’s on the other side of it, I hope this episode makes you feel hopeful and less alone.

Here are a few key learnings from Lauren:

  • The things you are projecting on others are reflecting the things you want for yourself.
  • If you lose friends in the transition from your good-on-paper-life to your new, fulfilling life, those people were not your real friends.
  • Hold onto sunshine wherever you can find it.

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night.
