Each month, we review a work of science fiction and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing the 1979 science fiction novel “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams.
This sci-fi comedy has seen every type of adaptation from radio, to video games and even stage shows. This beloved story begins with Arthur Dent, whose terrible Thursday just became worse as the Earth is just about to be destroyed by aliens to make way for an intergalactic bypass. The scary moment is cut short when his friend, Ford Prefect transports them onto another spaceship. Ford is not of Earth but an alien sent to make updates for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Encyclopedia. Arthur embarks on a journey that will take him across the galaxy to a once forgotten planet with a crew of odd beings. And a very depressed robot!

King Charles III will be crowned this Saturday, May 6, starting 5am EST. Here's a quick rundown of facts and cool things to notice while you're watching the ceremony. Andrea has pulled her inspiration from the review in April on S. J. Bennett's Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series that has Queen Elizabeth II investigating crimes. That series is available in regular print, large print, and audiobook in NC Cardinal. While all the "British royal fever" is circulating, it's a cool thing to read while having fun, especially for readers who find the monarchy fascinating, but don't want to read a nonfiction history book. www.sjbennettbooks.com
This episode is our chance to discuss all the wider British monarchy related topics and people, without stretching the last episode any longer than it was.

Welcome to the seventh episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library. Each month, we review a new science fiction book, movie or show and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing the 2021 science fiction, South Korean Netflix film Space Sweepers directed by Jo Sung-Hee.
Space Sweepers takes an interesting look at the idea of a heavily polluted, nearly uninhabitable Earth in the near future, where those who are considered elite can live on a newly colonized Mars. We follow a ragtag team of misfits who stumble upon a discovery that changes everything.
For this episode we will talk about the movie and my review, the cast members, recommendations for other movies and books that are similar and for a bit of science, take a look at the possibility of a habitable Mars.

So I hinted that something exciting was coming, and the first part is here! Today, we’re tackling a series I’ve had my eye on for a time. It is getting good reviews, has regular print, large print, and audiobook / Audible options; it is in NC Cardinal consortium; and fits with the royal coronation and British-themed murder mysteries we’re tackling in upcoming podcast episodes. Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series by S. J. Bennett has 2 books, with the third book coming out in the United States in September 2023.

Each month, we review a new science fiction book and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing the 2006 science fiction novel “The Wave” by Walter Mosley.
In this face-paced story, we meet Errol who has been having a rough few months. He is unemployed, his ex-wife cheated on him with his friend, and he started receiving calls from an unknown caller in the middle of the night. While that last one isn’t so bad, it does seem to escalate when the caller refers to Errol by a nickname only his father would. Yet his father passed away nine years ago!
After discussing this story we will look into other authors and stories that are similar to “The Wave” and briefly take a look at symbiotic relationships and how that relates to The Wave.

Welcome to the next episode of Cozy on up in NC Cardinal! Each episode is a journey through a Cozy Mystery theme or author available in NC Cardinal public libraries. This month, we're looking at coffee cozies! Well, just like our book character Lana Lewis, who is tasked with writing a newspaper feature on coffee, I too open with a blurb about it, and a list of coffee history books in NC Cardinal. The book we're reviewing this month is Tara Lush's GROUNDS FOR MURDER, book #1 in the Coffee Lover's Mystery series. There are currently 3 books in this series, with #3 having come out in October 2022.
I loved this book, so take a listen to find out why!
Feel free to join our Goodreads group or Amazon Book Clubs to discuss and recommend books to your fellow cozy mystery lovers. We also have a Pinterest board, if you’d like to follow along there and grab a digital copy of the handout I make for each theme.
Welcome to the third episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library. Each month we review a new science fiction book and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume One is a collection of the best in science fiction stories from the years 1929-1964.
This week, we meet some of the most prolific science fiction writers in history; Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson, and Alfred Bester. We meet a murderous android who is specifically programmed not to harm, a group of explorers who land on a Mars that looks quite familiar and encounter people on the planet Lagash 4 hours before the possible end of the world.
Each week, other staff members will be bringing you more topics. Be sure to check back each Wednesday at 1pm for a new episode. Welcome to the next episode of Cozy on up in NC Cardinal! Each episode is a journey through a Cozy Mystery theme or author available in NC Cardinal. I open with some history or chatter on the topic, then I jump into the books – author’s bio, series info, character snippets to flesh out what we’re looking at (sometimes you can connect to a story if you see yourself reflected it it), favorite quote (no spoilers), book readability (does it grab your attention, have an annoying character, confusing plot holes, etc.), lead character plausibility on why involved in the investigation, and plausibility / guessability on the crime.
Feel free to join our Goodreads group or Amazon Book Clubs to discuss and recommend books to your fellow cozy mystery lovers. We also have a Pinterest board, if you’d like to follow along there and grab a digital copy of the handout I make for each theme.
This month, we're opening with a discussion of Christmas foods and their history, then I jump into reviewing two books:
Gingerdead Man (Sept 2020), book #7 in A Five-Ingredient Mystery series, by Maya Corrigan.* First few titles are available in Large Print in NC Cardinal. No audiobook. * This series is currently still being added to. * https://cozy-mystery.com/maya-corrigan.html * https://www.mayacorrigan.com/
Fruit Baskets and Holiday Caskets (Sept 2020), book #5 in A Down South Cafe Mystery series, by Gayle Leeson.* No large print or audiobook available. Last book was published in 2021, so not sure this series will continue. * https://cozy-mystery.com/gayle-leeson.html * https://www.gayleleeson.com/
Welcome to the second episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library. Each month we review a new science fiction book and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai.
In this week's story, we meet our aimless protagonist Tom Barren who lives in a futuristic world, unlike ours. Technological advancements have solved all the world's problems. It’s a utopia. Yet Tom is not satisfied. Through some twists and sad turn of events, Tom takes an extremely unprepared leap with a time machine to change the past. The changing of the past brings forth a present Tom was not expecting. This is a story about the complexities of family, of unexpected journeys and the messiness and wonder of love.
Along with talking about the book, we will take a novice look at the plausibility of time travel and the impact it’s had in fiction. I open with a discussion of the history of pumpkin, pumpkin (pie) spice, and how it has become such a big part of American baking, and has now moved beyond that into coffee and now into many other things. As with any reader, we all rotate through various genres and authors, and flip-back-and-forth to our favorites we’ve read many times, trying new authors, and testing different formats like eBooks, audiobooks, large print, and regular print. I review the book / audiobook versions of the following 3 baking-themed Thanksgiving cozy mysteries:

Hello everyone, and welcome to our special summer edition of the Yadkin County Public Library podcast!
Each week of summer learning programming, on Sunday at 1pm, we are releasing an episode to help you prepare for the upcoming week’s programming options, explaining what is available, the content, and appropriate age range. We will also end the episode explaining if anything is available in our Take and Make area, and the summer reading challenge.
This summer, the national CSLP or Collaborative Summer Learning Program theme is “Oceans of Possibilities,” so the programs aim to match the theme!
Be sure to check out not only our summer programs, but that of our sister Northwestern Regional Library members, including the other Yadkin county cities of Boonville, East Bend, and Jonesville; and nine other NWRL library branches in Surry, Stokes, and Allegheny counties.
Let’s see what our Yadkin County Public Library branch in Yadkinville has to offer for our last summer programming week, July 25 - July 29!
All programs are first come, first serve on supplies and seating, with the program-appropriate ages having priority for seating and supplies. You do not have to register or pay a fee to attend. All programs are held in the library unless otherwise noted.
The Summer Reading Challenge “Just Keep Reading” began on June 6 and continues until July 29. Each time you come to check out books, be sure to bring your reading log, so the library staff can staple your receipt (and make a duplicate for our records). If you don't turn in your log by July 29th, library staff will have to use an estimate based upon the duplicate receipts printed at each of your visits that you brought your reading log to check out books. Of course, that cannot take into account any reading you did at home using your personal books, or if you didn’t bring your reading log to the library so the staff weren’t aware and didn’t print a duplicate receipt for our records.
This is why it’s important to bring your reading log for each check-out AND to turn in your reading log by July 29th!
We hope to see you this week for one or more programs, and that you have a safe and FIN-tastic summer!
Check out all the oceans of possibilities this summer at the library! We are highlighting all summer learning programs for the week of of July 18th through July 22nd so be sure to mark your calendar for these upcoming events so you don't miss out! #SLP2022 #oceansofpossiblities #yadkincountypubliclibrary #libraryevents #whattodoatthelibrary #freesummerprograms

May is Mystery Month and May 3rd was National Paranormal Day...and May 31, Angie Fox's new Southern Ghost Hunter book #11 comes out! In honor of these topics, I’m reviewing the Southern Ghost Hunters Mystery series by Angie Fox. In rare form for me, but helpful given my commute time, I am reviewing the Amazon Audible AND print versions of all of Angie Fox's series, books 1-10.

This month is National Garden Month. I’m excited for the chance to jump into the gardening subgenre of cozy mysteries. There are so many to pick from, but we've narrowed it down to one series. The Flower Shop Mystery series by Kate Collins has the distinction of being adapted into a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries series, with Brooke Shields as Abby Knight and Brennan Elliott as the romantic interest Marco Salvare, along with Beau Bridges as Abby’s dad Jeffrey. I'm reviewing the three Hallmark movies, and books #1, 3, and 4 that match the movie titles. You can request the movies through NC Cardinal, just like the books! www.nccardinal.org/eg/opac/record/11575048.

Welcome to the next episode of Cozy on up in NC Cardinal! Each episode is a journey through a Cozy Mystery theme or author available in NC Cardinal. This episode is looking at cozy mysteries nominated for an Edgar Award.
Next month is the announcement of the Edgar Award winners. The 76th Annual Edgar® Awards will be celebrated on April 28, 2022 . Nominees for the best of the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction and television published or produced in 2021 were announced on January 19, 2022, on the celebration of the 213th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe. But while we have some time left, let’s check out a couple of the cozy mysteries that have been nominated. https://edgarawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/2022EdgarNoms.pdf
Well, reviewing these 4 was certainly a different outcome than I expected. I know understand better why Rhys Bowen’s books check out so frequently at the library, as she is a good author. But, technically, since it wasn’t a cozy mystery, but just a historical mystery, it’s out of the running for my list of winners. If it was in the running, I’d have a hard time deciding…but here's my opinion on who should win the The Simon & Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award:

After seeing so many dozens of titles (entire pie shop mysteries series, or just single titles), I had to narrow it down. Today’s criteria is highlighting an often-overlooked segment: series that have suddenly ended. So, for those of you who like reading complete series, go for it! For the rest of us, use these as a pie sample, as it were, to taste test an author and find more series to read!

Our inaugural episode covered “what is a cozy mystery?” Today, we’re looking at holiday cozies, particularly those set during Halloween. Halloween and Christmas are the two most popular holidays that a series eventually gets to, with Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, St. Patrick’s Day, and Valentine’s Day also appearing in some series. There are 66 Halloween or Autumn cozy mysteries in NC Cardinal, so I had to narrow it down. I’m reviewing cozy mysteries that have bookstores, libraries, or a book club with Halloween as the main theme or setting.
