The sun has set by the time the last round of the Tulsa Tough bicycle race has begun. The sidewalks of the city are lined with Oklahomans, straining to see the cyclists whir around the corner and down the block in a blur. Grinnellians Laura and Scott Shepherd seem to be personal friends with every single passerby. "I swear, we don't know everyone in the city," Scott promises. After a day with them, I find that hard to believe. "When it comes to Grinnell, we like to pay it forward," Laura says. "Someday, some kid will email you and you'll take care of him."
