According to the Oxford English dictionary, confidence comes from the Latin word confidere, meaning "have full trust”. The feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. 

A feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.

Simply put, it is the trust in one's ability to step up to the plate when required, no matter what the challenge is and believe that success is almost a guaranteed outcome even though that   might always be the case.
