“When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them” (Isaiah 41. 17)

These are words of comfort and reassurance, meant to give hope to a disposessed and exiled people. But as we know, poverty and hunger can only be relieved by neighbourly effort, by human conviction and love. God gives the hope to those who despair, but gives the strength and resolve to others to help feed the hungry and clothe the poor. Many of us are therefore -crucially - God’s agents. How do we live out this calling?
